Actually I find Winter easier to sing than some of LeBries lines. And if
there IS a distinction between your head voice and falsetto, well I guess
I can do with with my head voice because I think I understand what
falsetto is and I don't think I sing in it. (but without hearing it in
context I can't really say.)

to every song upto THRAK I must say this is the heaviest album I have
bought since Awake. THIS CD, ON A FIRST LISTEN, RULES. EVERYONE who likes
DT will like this album. Haunting is the only word for it.

the Crimson King is back!

Okay my interp for Mirror follows but first:

I didn't receive Ytsejam digest #777 or #778. Does anyone know why? And more
importantly, does anyone know how I can get these? If my Erotomania question
was answered, I would really like to know the answer! I still haven't
figured it out.

I posted my interp of AMBI before I read the DT FAQ. If any of you haven't
read this yet, DO! It tells you the meanings of half of all the DT songs out
there. Good stuff.
Since the FAQ didn't say anything about the meaning of The Mirror, I'll post
what I think the meaning is. Okay here goes:

The Mirror

Well, this one might seem pretty obvious to some people, but I didn't figure
out the meaning until about a month ago, after I really studied the lyrics.
The song is basically about someone who has been hurting and lying to
himself and has put a "shell" around his true identity/personality. The song
is thematically connected to Lie in that manner. In the beginning of the
song, he is talking to the attributes of Temptation and Self Control- {Why
won't you leave me alone} {Don't turn your back on me now} These opening
lines tell us this person is mentally unstable, i.e. he lacks self control.
He goes on to talk about how his "evil" personality lies and has kept his
"good" personality hidden. {Hypocrite- How could you be so cruel and expect
my faith in return? Resistance- It's not as hard as it seems when you close
the door} He's spent all his life trusting this "evil" personality and
regrets what he has become. Then the "chorus": {Why did you lie and pretend?
This has to come to an end, I'll never trust you again, Its time you made
your amends, Look in the Mirror my friend} This is him talking to his "evil"
personality, telling it to get away from him and to stop lying to him.
  {Racing the clock to please everyone, All but the one who matters the most}
He is referring to himself when he says "the one who matters the most. Then
the viewpoint switches to the view of his "evil" personality {How in the hell
could you possibly forgive me? After all the hell I put you through} And
finally the second "chorus" in the viewpoint of the "evil personality" {Why'd
I betray my friend? Lying until the end, Living life so pretend, It's time to
make my amends, I'll never hurt you again}
Finally, the "evil" personality is overcome, or so it seems. It could be
lying...

At first I thought he was referring to someone else when he says {I'll never
hurt you again}, etc. etc, but when you look at the title, it all makes
sense..

A few post ago I said the following:

> Many DT songs might have been written only to sound
>lyrically beautiful and not have a deeper meaning, but anyway..

This was said pre-DT FAQ and at that time, I doubted if some of the songs had
a deeper meaning. But upon reading the FAQ, many of the songs that I had
doubted before became clear. Now I see that each song has a story behind it,
and some are even "spell-binding novels"!!! Previously I thought DT the best
solely because of their music, but now, I realize that DT, both lyrically and
musically are indeed(IMHO) one of the greatest bands in the history of music.

George (Deebor@aol.com)

Oh yeah, how many songs are represented on the Awake cover? I see The Mirror,
6:00, Caught In A Web, and The Silent Man?(maybe?). Any thing I might have
missed?

"Take The Time" by Dream Theater

"Unbroken spirit, obscured and disquiet,
Finds clearness this trial demands.
And at the end of this day, sighs an anxious relief,
For the fortune lies still in his hands.
If there's a pensive fear, a wasted year,
A man must learn to cope.
If his obsession's real, suppression that he feels
Must turn to hope."

"Mandragola" by Niccolo Machiavelli (Act 1, Scene 1)

"There's never anything so desperate that there isn't some
way of being able to hope for it, and though it might be
weak and in vain, the longing and desire that a man has of
carrying the thing through make it seem not so."

Mike Bahr: Let me try to understand this project. At first I thought,
"Okay, this wizard is going to synthesize James' voice over Charlie's on
WDADU, and re-vamp all the instruments by acquiring the original tracks
and re-equalizing them, etc..." But then I thought, "Wait, maybe he means
a compilation of the best live performances of the songs from WDADU with
James' singing them..." Is this a somewhat closer guess?

A Change Of Season lyrics:

I just happened to have these nearby as I read the plea in the last
Ytsejam. These appeared in Ytsejam #236, and were posted by Matthew T.
Pulver:

I've...more time
for...virgin lies (eyes?)
watch the crimson sunrise
imagine what in my mind
luck is filled with the wonder
I've felt the warm wind blow
I must explore the boundaries
the...are capped with...winter snow
then I searched the message (for me?)
now I thirst so...hold (cold?)
now I sell us...
never hold...

But these days are gone now
seems like the leaves on a tree
gone away forever
lived to my cold grave
the snow has fallen
and I know where I stayed
the world of my childhood memories
live long in the sand...

That's up to 3:15 of the song, and is all that Matthew posted. If I have
time after the posting of the "Awake" musical connections, I'll take a
stab at deciphering the lyrics to ACOS myself... Again, wish me luck!!

Ok, I have a question to start a little thread here possibly.
I'm in a creative mood...
Scenario:

An extraterrestrial lands on Earth and comes to your door. After getting
past the "slight" initial shock, he/she/it looks at you and utters these
words:
"I have come 93 million light years to Earth, for I have heard
across the galaxy about the greatness of an Earthling band named Dream
Theater. I want to take back this "Dream Theater" music to my planet and
share it with my world. However, my data storage format only allows me
to take back 30 seconds of music on my ship...45 seconds maximum. You
must give me the 30-45 seconds that defines Dream Theater, so that I may
enlightened my people and convince them of DT's greatness."

So....obviously this is a nearly impossible task, for we all know of
3-4.5 hours of DT greatness, let alone 30 seconds. So what'll it be, guys
and gals? Your friend at the door is waiting....
Give him THE 40 second clip to define DT.

I'll propose the 1st answer: 12:20 - 13:00 (time as on DoE boot)
                               A Change of Seasons
(the instrumental time between James' singing)
Give it a listen and see if you agree.

Here we go...

Firstly, these songs have no other songs intertwined within them:
6:00
Caught In A Web
Innocence Faded
Voices
The Silent Man
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Space-Dye Vest

Secondly, these songs have parts of other songs in them:
Erotomania (really? no way!)
The Mirror
Lie
Scarred

Thirdly, the connections:

Erotomania:
The opening riff seems to be the "Erotomania" riff, and as far as I can
tell is not taken from any other song. At 1:14, they begin a progression
that would fit perfectly behind the lyrics from "Voices" - "Like a scream
but sort of silent..." At 3:05 they begin the progression from "The Silent
Man" chorus - "When there is reason..." This continues on until 3:43,
where they begin the chords from the guitar-break in "The Silent Man," the
part just before the acoustic solo. Then at 4:04, the progression from
"Caught In A Web," from the chorus - "Caught in a weeeeeeb..." The next
few notes, however, do not match up with "removed from the world" but
rather "spinning the lies..." After that they trail off into a variation
of the CIAW chord progression (chorus). Then there are two really cool
classical parts that somehow remind me of something from Awake, but I
can't place them... Anyway, at 5:30, the guitar starts chugging, and in
the background you can hear the keyboard playing the main "Erotomania"
riff.

The Mirror:
At 1:57 the main part from "Space-Dye Vest" is played behind power chords.
("Falling through pages...) Then they do variations of this for a while.
This is repeated at 4:31. At 5:15, the line is played again, but slower
and more like the original "Space-Dye Vest" progression.

At 2:59, the part that begins with "It's time for me to deal..." is
immediately repeated at a faster tempo at 3:21. Then it is repeated
again, though much slower, at 5:46.

Lie:
At 5:14, the progression from 2:59 of "The Mirror" is played yet again
behind Petrucci's leads.

Scarred:
Yes, at 5:30, Petrucci plays something very close to the old "Wheel Of
Fortune" theme. Other than that, I couldn't find anything from the other
songs on the album.

As I thought when I first read the FAQ, the claim that "Erotomania" is
comprised completely of other songs is false. The claim that "Erotomania"
is made up of songs from the first side of the cassette - "6:00," "Caught
In A Web," "Voices," and "The Silent Man," is also false. I couldn't find
anything in it from 6:00, which really revolves around the opening
bassline Myung throws in right after "6:00 on a Christmas morning..."
That riff is nowhere to be found in Erotomania. The other three, however,
(CIAW, Voices, Silent) are there.

"The Mirror" and "Lie" share a riff, and the "Space-Dye Vest" chords show
up here and there on the album, but other than that I didn't find much
else. Has anyone else noticed any other shared lines that I might have
missed?

Greeting to all fellow jammers,
This is my first REAL post (the first few were actually from a good
friend of mine in Delaware who asked me to forward his posting because
the JAM would not take his mail due to the fact that his email adress
includes the word ytsejam...how's that for a run-on sentence!) Anyway, I
like to say hi to him...HI ANDY, I LOVE YA MAN! Anyway, this is in
response to Gene who asked about the pay-per-view show. I actually got
my copy today and watched it twice in a row, back to back, because it
fuckin rocks! if you like a copy, Gene, email Allan at:
 box532@idirect.com

Now for a review of that video. I love it!! The quality is excellent
because its a pro-shot, very similar to the concert footage from Live In
Tokyo. Watch it on a hi-fi VCR and (if possible) a THX home-theater
system becasue the sound is also bitchin! Myung's bass has never sounded
so good (Myung actually drowns out the keyboard at one point!).
Performance of the band was killer, with two minor exceptions:

 1) Mike has a little trouble with the fast double-bass licks at the
beginning of 6:00 (its when the voice is saying "six o'clock on a
Christmas morning". But who can blame him, its a pretty fast lick!
 2) Poor James, on the last few songs, he has a little trouble singing the
higher stuff. He didn't suck by any means, because he still sang very
well (especially considering the demanding vocals on EVERY one of their
songs!) Its like he sang his heart out half-way thru the gig, but still
finished the show on his feet!

EVerything else was a complete delight to watch! They sang Happy
Birthday to John Myung and gave him a cake on stage (aw...shucks!) They
also had a moment of silence right before "The Slient Man" to honor
those that had died in the Japan earthquake. Anything else, well right
before they went on, the video showed an interview of the band (sans
Derek Shredian...sp?). The band looked bored as the interviewer rambled
on in Japanese for about 5 minutes. And one last thing...Petrucci shaved
his goatie. Damn, he looked cool with it! Anway, sorry about the length
of this posting. Here's the setlist:
1) Pull Me Under
2) 6:00
3) Take The Time (mini-jam at the end of that one)
4) Caught in a Web (w/ drum solo)
5) Lifting Shadows off a dream (guitar and keyboard solos follow)
6) The Mirror
7) Lie
8) Another Day
9) ALL of A Mind Beside Itself (Erotmania rulz!)
10) Metropolis (encore)

Thank you Allan for the tape. For those who are getting it...enjoy!

                                        SURROUNDED by alternative shit,
                                        yet unSCARRED by it all!

On the subject of covers, has anyone heard Soundgarden's cover of some
Beatles song (maybe it was a Lennon tune). Sorry I can't remember the name
of the song, I heard it on the radio one time. Anyway, it was fucking out
there! Cornell sings the melody just right but the band plays something
completely different with NO chord progression like the original has. It
pretty weird! You sorta hear the progression in the vocal melody but the
band keeps playing this weirdo one chord thing. Anyway, it was cool and
definitely risky :). If anyone knows what I'm talking about, let me know.

Somewhere on 2112, Neil credits Ayn Rand's Anthem as inspiration for the
song 2112. The song Anthem is on Fly By Night (two before 2112 and the 2nd
Rush album. Also the first Neil played on) and doesn't have any sort of
philosophical meaning I don't believe (at least not in any Randian sense
unless you count the line "Now I know they've always told you selfishness
was wrong/Yet it was for me not you I came to write this song" :). Also
(someone correct me if I'm wrong) I'm pretty sure I remember reading that
Neil wrote 2112 then realized the similarity to Rand's book _after_ he had
written it so he felt he should give credit to her as inspiration.

Oh give me a break! He holds that "learned" note for just a few beats.
Plus, he's not going for a long extended high, he's coming down and there
seems to be a bit of a retard there. He's definitely doing it on purpose
and I think to good effect because earlier in the tune he holds the vowel.
As for the falsetto, your opinion. IMO, the falsetto is another nice effect
because it gives an airy quality as he fades out.

Dave, I listened to TOWHTSTS and paid special attention to 5:26. I don't
have any idea what you're saying. I'm not noticing any real obvious chord
progression and Dominici just sings a d minor scale. I don't think the
accompaniment is weak and I'm not wondering what "Chucky D." is doing. It
sounds like you just don't like Dominici. That's cool and that could
influence why you don't like those tunes. Hey, I got that album right when
it came out and I still don't have I&W (but I love Awake and have LaTM).

More on the subject of WDADU. Is there anyway to get a transcription of the
YtseJam (the tune)? Did someone say that DT reads this list? John, I'd love
to have that bass part! Not only am I too lazy to transcribe it myself,
it's hard to hear the bass in the mix. When I saw the transcription for Lie
and Erotomania, I realized I'd missed a lot of things.

OH MAN!! Here's what you said:

"I would really love to hear them do a piece w/ a true classical structure.
Like: "Petrucci's Symphony No. 1 in F#m Op. 5" That would be most impressive."

See how I misinterpreted it?

Well WATCH IT BUDDY! :). I was ready to run to the record store. It's quite
a task to write a symphony. I don't know if Petrucci ever studied that sort
of thing but he probably doesn't have the time to write it anyway.

What Dream Theater Survey? Anyway, glad to back you. As I've said before,
I've had WDADU since it came out and I listened to it a _lot_ when I got
it. I still think it's great and they should rerelease it on CD (before my
tape wears out).

As for AOL, don't feel bad. I have an AOL account I just get this letter at
my 'net account (better mailer). AOLers takes a lot of shit on the 'net and
I have to keep defending AOL.

I personally read every post posted to YJ. =) (and proof-read,
        occasionally) <grin>

I did the same, actually. Of course, I had a college radio show,
but, that's besides the point. =) I think my last count of people I got
to buy I&W was around 25. I bought about 6 copies myself, as gifts
(b-day/xmas). One of them went to this guy's fiancee whom I met at a work
party. She was talking about what a big Yes fan she was, and also liked
early Genesis. So, after realizing she wasn't going to go out & buy them
on her own, I got her the I&W tape and AWAKE CD for x-mas.

My friend yelled at me - "Man, why'd you buy that for her! I can't stand
progressive rock!" <g>

Wow! Someone besides me owns "WATER!" I LOVE that album!

Too bad they broke up. :(

Oh, yeah, of course. I think I mentioned that...? If not <shrug>.

I think I pointed out "When You Were Mine/Reprise" because that
album really was practically all Jason B.'s doing... =)

YES! YES! I LOVE JAGERMEISTER! =)

Sorry, had to be said. =)
