Hello everyone :)
I hope not to offend any of you who may happen to be Blind Melon fans...
Brian Adams (No, not that one) posted an interview from GFTPM in jam #920.
Brian, I remember that piece very well! I think my blood pressure jumped
20 points the first time I read it! Seeing it again just raised my blood
pressure again! ...As I read it again, I couldn't help thinking.... Man,
that's pretty big talk for a band who had one hit that is remembered more
for a little girl in a bee costume than for the musical content! What a
lack of respect and humility! (I know... I'm not much better of a person
for saying this here, but...) What do you expect from a band who's lead
singer strips during a concert and urinates on the first row of fans...
(I believe that happened at a show out in the western US somewhere). If
I remember correctly, the local authorities (or was it their promoter)
convinced them to return to that venue and play a free concert.
If I were dumb enough to go to the first show, I certainly wouldn't go
to the free second show! Boy... they must love their fans, eh???
I wonder if their fan club membership includes an umbrella with the bee girl
on it????
Sorry if I offended anyone, but I had to vent!
See ya!
Craig

I thought Caught in a Web had an awful lot of guitar tracks on it. It has
only about 3 meter changes though...Scarred has a lot of space for meter
changes, but I'd say it's Erotomania, with 47-48 (counting repeats, with
the changes from 5/4 to 9/8). There's a lot there... What about the song
with the least? SDV or 6:00 (which is almost entirely in 4)

Dear DT-Freaks,
I would like to comment on various threads that recently shown up on the
list.
1. First the age etc thing: I am a student at the faculty of Pharmacy at
Utrecht University in The Netherlands. I am 24, and starting with the last
year of my studies. Ethnic background: like most Europeans varied
(Dutch, Prussian, Irish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Italian) but it really
doesn't show on the outside.
2. ACoS: I was quite unhappy with the songs that were picked from the Ronnie
Scotts gig. I would really have liked to hear the Marillion, Yes and UK
song(s) that were played, and I expected at least one or two of them on the
album, especially Starship Trooper and Easter. Now I hold nothing against
Elton John, Led Zep or Deep Purple, but that's definitely not what I'm
waiting for. I can understand a choice for Zep and Deep Purple, but Elton
John?? Maybe he (or Bernie Taupin) wrote some nice songs during the years,
but thats what they are-just nice songs. They mean nothing to me and I would
not for a moment consider buying an album of Elton John. So why did they put
them on? the most probable cause is that it's for commercial reasons, so
that people would recognise some of the songs on the EP when they have a
look at it in the shops and don't know the band. Well I don't think that
this will bring them many new fans. I think that for Europe it would be
smarter to put some names on it that make music in the same vein, i.e.
Marillion, Yes, so that people have an idea what kind of music is on the CD
that they (hopefully) end up buying.
Let's hope that the EP, though it isn't really in length an EP, is priced
like it. Any chance that the other songs of the Ronnie Scott's gig ever
gonna be released? I don't have much hope on getting my hands on a bootleg
tape (if it exists).
3. Long songs: I browsed through my music collection and this is what I came
up with:
- IQ - Last human gateway (21 min)
- Aragon - Rocking horse (21 min)
BTW Great that someone mentioned this band in it's signature!!
- Asgard - Esoteric Poem (36:54)
- Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick (42 min)
- Shadow gallery - The city of ice (17:22)
Has anybody heard the new album????
- Genesis - Supper's ready (22 min)
- Now - Converging universes (33:00)
This band has a great little female bass player with a huge six-string
bass and a very good guitarists, who did things on stage that I haven't
seen JP do (yet?)
- Van der Graaf Generator - Pioneers over C (17 min)
I'm a bit surprised no-one on this list has ever mentioned this band- They
have made complex prog (bit like King Crimson) since the late sixties. I
guess some people on this list would like them if they heard them
- Cairo - Ruins at Avalon's gate (22:35)
- Magellan - Magna Carta (16 min)
- Marillion - Grendel (17:22)
- Arcansiel - I'm still searching (22 min)
Needless to say there are a lot more long songs on this planet floating
around some CD's. If anyone wants any info on one of these bands, e-mail
me!!
4. Man in smoke?? This may sound very stupid, but when I went to the DT gig
in Nijmegen I bought an Awake cover poster and immediately when i got back
home I put it up on the wall. The next morning when I woke up I looked at
the poster from about 3-4 m and I clearly saw a figure of a standing man in
the poster. His head would be reverted from the mirror and leaning on his
right forearm, while his left forearm would be extended towards the mirror.
All these parts were made up of clouds. His belly would be the head of the
statue, and his legs the lower part of the statue. It is not a very
goodlooking man, in fact his belly (head of the statue) is rather big.
I don't know if any of this makes sense, but then I remembered that there
is supposed to be an indication to every song of the album in the cover. I never have read a good explanation
for "Innocense faded", but some time ago I noticed the line "The mirror
falls behind him" from the chorus. This could make sense, because the man
(Gone up in smoke??) reverts his head from the mirror.
I would like to hear some comments from someone on this subject.
All in all a long post, hope you finished it!!

Well Ytsejammers,
Unfortunately, it's time for me to say goodbye to this list -- at least
for a little while. I'm finally leaving the University and moving to Las
Vegas with the Air Force, thereby I'm losing my 'net access....
I've been on this list since DT'ers first talked about it on
alt.music.progressive.metal over two years ago, and I've made a lot of
great net-friends. Hell, I remember helping put together the first DT
FAQL, along with a bunch of others, when DT info was hellaciously hard to
come by. But as you know, the net always comes through when you need it!
I have to say that having been a member of the Rush list, the Yes list,
and the Marillion list, the Ytsejammers are by far some of the greatest
'netters around. It's been great, guys -- thanks.
Special thanks to guys like Mike Bahr (I'd never have those fantastic
CDs without him!), Mike Burstein, Brian Cox, Jennifer (I can't remember
your last name, Airdance!), Tim Lodge, C-Man, and others for bringing
the rare Dream Theater to the masses. It's great people like this that
I'm gonna miss...
So, as I say farewell, here's my last beg of DT:
Please, please, PLEASE release as b-sides "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and
"Easter" with Marillion's Steve Rothery and Ian Mosely, the big Yes
medley with Steve Howe, and MOST DEFINITELY Tears!
Farewell Ytsejammers! Hope to see you again soon!

I too am on the verge of writing a scathing note here about Blind Melon (who
have a new album out and vid on MTV -- only seen the beginning and it's still
Greatful Dead-ish). THEY ABSOLUTELY SUCK!! Almost no bands in the "hip" MTV
vien have members who have mastered their instruments. That's what's so
attractive about gain. You don't need to hit the right strings. Enough
overdrive will cover the super-slop, but not the slop. Anyway, my guess is
that 98 percent of the 'Jam would like to write an angry rebut to the
Melon-head comments, but since we all agree, what's the point? LATER-

YEAH! I read all 6 in the series then read the last 4 again a year later.
That was a great story! I remember seeing the movie before I read the book.
My friends thought it was the stupidest thing going. Then I read the book
and hated the movie because I thought that the movie was way off base. My
hate for the movie translated into hate for David Lynch. Then I read the
rest of the series and realised that David Lynch had actually taken stuff
from the first 3 books and put it into the movie. I later came to love
David Lynch's work in Twin Peaks (one of the best series ever!). Sorry
about no DT content but Dune is great.

I have a question about the track list for Acoustic Dreams (shown above)
which I hope that either Mike Bahr, or maybe someone else on the list,
can answer. I see that "Perfect Strangers" is listed as one of the
tracks to be included on Acoustic Dreams. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
isn't that one of the tracks from the Ronnie Scotts gig which is going to
be included on the upcoming EP? Is this the same version which is slated
for inclusion on Acoustic Dreams, is it a different version of the same
song, or am I mistaken and it is actually a completely different song?
If someone could clarify this for me I would appreciate it.

Yeah, noticed it. I also noticed the same with much of Tourniquet's
music (i.e. Impending Embolism & Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance). I just
can't say enough about this band. Drummer Ted Kirkpatrick cited as his main
influence (in addition to Neal Peart), the baroque composer Dominico
Scarlatti. Cool, eh.

did do a great job.

Ditto on what I said about The Crow, except replace "Brandon" with
"Herbert."

They didn't TOTALLY drop the "preachy" thing. They just had a
change of direction. The title "Against the Law" was a reaction to much of
the judgmentalism they were having to undergo as a result of being outspoken
Christians in a musical genre such as they were in. Also, I don't think
they were "blue," but just dropped the Yellow/Black thing and decided to
look like dudes for once (I have a "To Hell w/the Devil" poster in my room,
and I must say that they look like chicks - sorry to all you females out
there who are offended by the word "chick"). BTW, there is going to be a
Stryper tribute album coming out soon featuring such bands as Sometime
Sunday, Dig Hay Zoose, and possibly Believer :))))) doing Stryper tunes.
I'll let y'all know more when I find it out. Oh, BTW, there was a Stryper
update in a recent Heaven's Metal mag. If anyone wants it, I could maybe
copy it and send it to you.
>Oh well...at least they're (Blind Melon) gone now and DT's

Sorry to bust your bubble, but BM are still around. I heard a new
song on the radio the other day. I remember another part of that
coimmentary on DT that they made where they said something like "I bet they
have nice hair." DId anyone see BM's performance at Woodstock '94? The
singer, to quote a review in the St. Louis paper, looked like "Bjork's ugly
younger sister." Hmm.....

Cool. One of the things my now ex-girlfriend and I highly disagreed
on was music. She HATED metal/hard music (including prog) of any kind, good
or bad. She was more into stuff like Air Supply, Bette Midler, and all that
sappy romantic crud (I have a romantic side, too, just HATE sappy crud).
She also liked Chicago, which isn't too bad, but there was no hope for DT.
Like I said, she's now my ex. (no we didn't break up over music).

Just having my say on a couple of things:
1) I am 1/2 Fijian and 1/2 New Zealand European (4th generation Scottish).
2) I am adopted.
3) I appear to be the only New Zealander (sorry, person living in NZ)
mailing to the jam regularly (a big Gidday to all the Kiwi lurkers out

4) I don't like Blind Melon (and I'm sure they don't like me either). I
agree with what is being said. What is wrong with good technique? I get a
lot of people telling me that the technical thing died in the latter part
of the eighties, but DT IMHO don't sacrifice feel and good songwriting for
the sake of the technical skills they are all blessed with. I feel that
they actually did do this to an extent with WD&DU, but since then they
have matured musically with every subsequent release. I think at the end
of the day that there is absolutely nothing wrong with musical ability, as
long as the songs are not suffering as a result.

I would have thought the most baroque sounding piece was the latter part of
Erotomania where JP does his Yngwie thing with the arpeggio's.

Go ladies! My girlfriend has joined the ranks of the 'living awake'. It's
good to see some ladies who have musical appreciation for prog metal. I'm
getting sick of women who like Pantera / Metallica / Fight / Sepultura /
Megadeth / Slayer and the only DT song they like is Mirror. I appreciate

Hey all!
This is mostly in response to Dave's comment about having Iron Maiden and
Stryper in the same CD player: Heaven and Hell.
I resent that! Iron Maiden is NOT satanic! The rotting corpses on their
album covers (all of them the creation of Derek Riggs, not IM) just give
that impression sometimes. That's what turned me away from them until I
listened to them. "But what about 'Number of the Beast?'" Sorry, this
is ABOUT a satanic cult, not preaching it. It really reminds me of the
short story "Young Goodman Brown." Actually, esp. where Bruce is
concerned, IM is sort of Christian, i.e. 'Revelations' 'No Prayer for the
Dying' 'Holy Smoke', etc.
Now maybe IM was in your young, or 'hellion', music stage but they're not
satanic. I'm a Christian, and I still like 'em. A whole lot.
I'll get down from my soapbox now. Thanks for listening!
"Up the Irons!"
Glenn
For the sake of nitpickers, I know that Derek didn't draw the last cover.
Oh yeah, Stryper was OK. I just though their singer's (Sweet?) voice was
a bit too feminine. Not that I don't like feminine voices... Just on
women. You know what I mean! Sheesh, look at the time...

So, I guess a fellow jammer was wondering if any of us were adopted also?
I am.
I dont really think about it much. I have a younger brother who is adopted
also. (by the way, last I heard...his band is getting signed. It is nothing
like DT, so I wont discuss it. However, my family, friends, and I are all
excited for him!!) Anyways, It has caused me some discomfort in the far past.
I remember my brother and I talking when I was nine and he was about seven. We
did not believe that we were adopted, because we kind of looked like various
family members and we acted like each other (yeah, I know such behavior is
common between kids, but I did not realize it at the time). My brother and I
were so adamant that we were not adopted, my mom took us to the agency where
they got us. We spoke to the lady who had taken care of the paperwork. I
never found out who my biological parents were, but I do know that they were a
recently, happily married couple who simply did not have enough money to afford
a child. At least they had enough love to carry the kid to term and give it up
for adoption. Every once in a while I wonder what they are like. (I guess
that I should mention that I was about 6 mos. old when I was adopted and my
brother was about 9 mos). I especially wonder if my personality matches
theirs, or (for that matter) if I have any biological brothers and sisters!!
What if I had a twin?? (I'm sure my friend who also is on this list, AKOZAR,

Since we're all flaming them...
and if anyone cares...
I managed to purchase an original Echoplex from a store here which had a
down-payment on it by Rogers of Blind Melon.. I thought, and so did the owner of
the store think that he would not be back for it. However, as I was walking out
with it, he walked in to get it.
I laughed at him....man, was he ugly!
I still laugh about this today.
If anyone cares...

Subject: elise's long hair comments
Message-ID: <950815204830_75610000@aol.com>
Quoting:
> i find long hair on men quite disgusting, as do all of my female >friends.
just a note to those of you who can't get a date, cut the >hair.
Well, just a few comments to add to this:
1) I'm very sorry that I had begun to believe the mentality displayed above
about 3 years ago, and cut off my nearly waist long hair. (Incidentally, I
used to get compliments from strange women that I didn't know...in grocery
stores, asking me what kind of conditioner and shampoo I used, and if it was
a perm...hehe...)
After I chopped it off, the situation worsened. So, I decided to grow it
back, realizing that a woman who would (a) love me for who I WAS
INSIDE and (b) Like my long hair would come along. Sure enough, she did. I've
been dating her for nearly a year and a half. Not only is she beautiful -
*you can ask Dave Neff if you don't believe me* - she's also about to
graduate with a 3.87 from Temple university with a degree in Music Therapy,
and has made the Dean's list every single semester she was at Temple. =)
2) Women who go around judging guys by their hair length should bear one
thing in mind: You can't judge a book by it's cover. Not only is it shallow,
but, you may miss out on someone who was "Mr. Right," and wind up going out
with some jerk with short hair, a nice car, but treats his dog better. The
only guys with long hair that you REALLY have to watch out for are the ones
who let it become a huge rat's nest...and even then, you could still be
wrong. That's just as shallow as guys not going out with a woman who's "a bit
heavy."
Sexism on both sides.
And, one last thought: Are you sure it's not jealousy out of the fact that
some guys have nicer hair than some women?
Shallow people really annoy me.
-Hairball, one of those long haired guys who DOES look better with it, and is
actually quite inteeeligynt...er...er...gots smarts! <G>
p.s. Think about this one: I've been the first long haired guys most of my
ex's have ever dated...one mom had the above mentioned mentality, and
wouldn't let me go out with her daughter without a reference. (Literally!)
However, she was a mistake...but, I won't go into it...

The following appeared in Ytsejam #918:
>In the KISS "Revenge" tourbook from 1992, there is a picture of Derek
(he played keys backstage for KISS on that tour), and he very visibly has
long hair. My guess is that either a) the short hair is relatively
recent (like in the past 2 yrs or so), or b) he wore a wig while he was
touring with KISS. Neither would really be a surprise to me. And, further,
neither makes any difference whatsoever regarding his musicianship and
what he will be bringing to Dream Theater.<
The b) comment brought a smile to my face... Okay, so it's not DT related,
but it's musically related...kinda. One of the bands Keith was in was very
image oriented...so all the guys who didn't have naturally long hair had to
wear wigs. (Mind you, this was at a time when nobody in metal had short
hair, but, still, it seems silly to me!) I definitely wonder how Keith
looked as he's always had extremely short hair since I first met him...
On ethnicity... While I have a touch of Swedish, Dutch, and Scotch, I am
very German...on both sides of my family. (You would not doubt it all if I
told you what my "pre-marital" name - I'm not going to get into "the name
thing" - was. *Very* German.) Hubby is also quite German...

You bring up a good point about progressive metal and most heavy metal in general (at least the guitar solos (which are argueably the defining characteristic of heavy metal)). Heavy metal (encompassing prog.) does appropriate certain techniques of "Baroque" music mainly in the constant and motoric rhythms. The Baroque technique of sequencing is also popular. These appropriations are not limited to progressive metal but have been more commercially popularized by Eddie VH, Randy Rhoads, and Yngwie. Oh yea, way back when there was this guy named Ritchie Blackmore...

--Sorry, hit the wrong button-- Bands like DT and (to some extent Fates) expand the Baroque stuff by adding the counterpoint you mentioned. I've always thought that the emphasis on single note lines instead of the more "chordal" styles of "normal" metal was what set DT apart. 99% of Erotomania is what I'm thinking of here.
Anyway, for more ideas on this I urge you to check out a book called "Runnin' With the Devil: Power, Gender & Madness in Heavy Metal" by Robert Walser. There is a full chapter on the appropriation thing. Anyway, good observation.

Dear all,
It's been awhile since my last contribution to this page, but today I'm back. On August the first I got my copy of Subconcious. It had take a long time to get to the Netherlands, but in the end you forget the waiting when you listen to all those songs. Thanks Mike for sending me a copy.
The next thing I got was on August the fifth. It's the pre-release tape for the EP A Change Of Seasons due for release in Europe on September 15th. Besides A Change Of Seasons it contains four tracks from the Ronnie Scotts concert on January 31st, 1995. These songs are: Funeral For A Friend, Perfect Stranger, Led Zeppelin Medley and Big Medley. I think the new version of A Change Of Seasons is great, much more better than the old version of two/three years ago.
Hope you people like it as well when you hear it.

I just read a review of Blind Melon's latest album (Soup) in some guitar magazine, and many of you will be happy to know that it only got 1 1/2 stars (I assume out of 5). The reviewer said something like it died long before the 14 songs ran their course. I seriously doubt that DT would get such a review. Maybe we'll find out when ACoS comes out...

P.S. I just saw, on Conan O'Brien (underrated, IMO) where they did part of the theme song from "Friends" (I'll be there for you) as Jimi Hendrix would have done it. They also had an obscure reference to the book/movie Johnny Got His Gun (see "One," bby Metallica). This show is actually kind of funny.
