I was quietly listening to the advance tape of "ACOS" when something amazed
me. What! Vocals on the Zep medley? I was at the Ronnie Scott's show (an
incredible moment) and I am absolutely sure that James did not sing during
this medley. Why did they ad some vocals? I don't know... But it sounds
great! The DT fans will be happy to hear that and it is more interesting
than only instrumental.
Maybe they did other overdubs, but it is difficult to find. I think they
chose to give a "perfect product" instead of a "real" product. Who can blame
them for this choice? Not me... Perhaps could they release the whole show,
with no overdubs, for the die-hard fans, through the net for example.
Wait for the Japanese version that will include 3 more tracks from the
Ronnie Scott's: Red hill town (U2), Damage Inc. (Metallica) and Tears
(Rush). These 3 tracks should appear on a separate Cd in Europe. I don't
know for the States.
One last thing, for those who have some doubts: James is a great live
singer. He sang like a God during the Wake Up Summer Tour. Very very
impressive!! I never saw such great vocals.

Not unless you can go out and find the actual studio master and pull them off
yourself. =)
They're probably on tape somewhere, but, what got mixed down as the sax part
on it is obviously what Prater felt was best - considering that the album was
mixed without them there.

Aviad,
I'm continuing my defense of Myung. I will agree that he's not being forced
to solo. But maybe he is, in a way. Sometimes you're playing and you aren't
comfortable with soloing but the current soloist finishes and gives you the
look and it's your solo and you gotta do it. And maybe it sucks for
whatever reason. Myung doen't solo live. Someone asked him and he said he
didn't feel a need to. Probably he doesn't want to (or feel confident,
whatever). I remember reading an article with Anthony Jackson. He said that
if he doesn't want to solo and won't because it won't be good. Now that guy
can play (no matter how opinionated he is :), but sometimes he isn't
comfortable soloing. When I'm playing jazz, I sometimes feel like getting a
good line down is enough of a solo for me. I mean, I'm improvising every
note as we play. In a rock band, I may not be in a solo mood for what's
being played. I just might not have anything to say on the subject. I never
heard the jam with Myung's (non)solo but I wanted to throw out other
possiblities. What you say is true. But everyone isn't a soloist. I still
think that bass is a more difficult instrument on which to develop soloing
skills because you're foremost concerned with so many other things.
Guitarists, OTOH, are expected to solo right away and they work on that a
lot. Additionally, a lot of bassists can feel self-conscious about soloing.
A lot of times, the bass solo falls flat. I mean, Petrucci, Derek, then
what the hell is Myung gonna play to follow those guys? His influences are
also Irom Maiden and Rush. I don't listen to Iron Maiden but I've never
heard Geddy solo apart from embellishing a line in a song. So I may be
making excuses for him. Maybe he's a lousy soloist but I don't think being
a soloist is neccessary to be fully explore his music.

After seeing all these messages, I must assume, that the last set
of T-shirts are no longer being sold. Therefore, it is time for another
round. I would do it myself, if I had the money to make such an
investment, but I don't. All it really requires is time, money, and an
artist friend. And the money part is just a temporary investment. I'm
sure you would get it back from selling the shirts. I thought a really
cool design would be this: Plain black t-shirt, with a little burning
heart emblem on the front left. Then, on the back, the Dream Theater
symbol painted in reflective black, as on the Images and Words album.
Under the black symbol, "Ytsejam" would be printed in a logo similar to the
one on the more recent DT stuff, in red. Then on top of the symbol, a
short quote of choice taste. Then under the burning heart, in tiny
letters: "Ytsejam@arastar.com". So what do you think?
I'm not too much of a fan of Dominici's voice, so I don't listen
to WDADU very much, but just the other day, I put it on and heard "The
Killing hand". The first 1:30 is incredibly awesome. It's just so
incredibly cool! But then when the lyrics come in, it really starts to
blow. It's not even just Dominici that I have trouble with then, but
just the lyric-line in general. Oh well, C'est la guerre.

They
are identical to DT! I could tell any one of you guys this song was
written
by DT and except for the vocals you would belive it. And the vocalist
is
incredible also. He sounds alot like James, but IMO better. He has
just a
tad more crunch in his voice. If DT ever got a new singer they should
get
him (but I'm not suggesting that at all, I love James' voice). <
they are *not* identical to DT and after listening to the cd about 12
times i dont see any resemblance between the singer and james....
especially when this guy tries to hit a high note... he only trfied
once and its kinda hard to listen to. i agree that the sound is
somewhere between wdadu and i&w but they're not 'identical' and
they're very different musically and lyrically. most of the
resemblance is in the sound and the style somewhat.

I feel compelled to offer a somewhat dissenting opinion here. I have heard
scads of great reviews for these guys on the net, with no negatives at all.
So I picked up the CD with great anticipation and was quite dissapointed.
I agree that they are similar to Dream Theater in sound/style, but their
songwriting skills aren't even in the same league. There is no chance that
I would believe that one of their songs was a DT song. Another problem
is frequent descents 80's glam metal sounds. I would be more likely to
confuse them with Winger than DT.
This is not to say they are without merit. There are some very cool songs
on the album, and the guitar solos are consistently very tasty. The singer
is quite good. But I just wanted to disagree with what is seemingly the
unanmous opinion of the net, because I don't want others to be dissapointed
like I was.

Hello to all JAMMERS and happy start-of-semester :( ! Anyway, this goes
to Mike Bahr or anyone else who has heard the studio version of ACOS.
Does James sing in his clean voice or his growling voice. I mean, was it
like I&W or like AWAKE? Just curious as to where James is taking his
vocal style.

Hi,
OK, I can't wait any longer... ;-) I'm listening to ACoS now
(from Dance of Eternity) and that one section in the middle around
15:30-16:20 has once again blown me away... (The instrumental section
where the keys and guitar are flying and then Kevin has a gut wrenching
solo and everything comes back together... Well, OK, that probably
happens more than once in ACoS ;-) but this particular section grabs
me away from whatever I'm doing every single time. I love it!!).
Anyway, to those of you who have been fortunate enough to hear
a promo of the new ACoS EP already, I was wondering (hoping!) if this
section was still in there. The harmonies that the guitar and keys
create are just phenomonal and I worry that they might not sound as
good if they're changed much.... I was going to wait to hear it for
myself, but after hearing it again just now I could wait no longer...
Thanks for any feedback!
On the subject of Shadow Gallery, I agree that DT fans have
to pick up their "Carved in Stone" album -- I'm sure many will like it.
I like it quite a bit, but I'm afraid that it isn't going to last that
long for me. We'll see though.
One thing is that though they do sound somewhat similar to
DT, don't expect them to be as good going in... Don't expect too much
or you may be disappointed.
If you like Shadow Gallery, you should also pick up albums by
the other two bands on the Magna Carta label: "Magellan" and "Cairo".
They are not as similar to DT as Shadow Gallery but they both have
excellent music.
I especially love Magellan's albums -- if anyone wants to
hear a sampler of any of those Magna Carta bands (or other stuff) just
drop me some email. I could probably do them for free if I don't get
too many requests (or for tape trades). I can't afford the time to
do custom samplers for everyone, but I'll put together one or two
tapes that should give a representative sample.
BTW, I was able to find Shadow Gallery in Baltimore, MD at a
place called "Planet Music" (a huge music store). There was only one
copy, but I know they can order it (I've also seen Magellan and Cairo
at that store). The online stores have Shadow Gallery too.
The Magna Carta label is also coming out with a "Tribute to
Yes" album (not sure of the title) which will have a bunch of Yes
songs done by the Magna Carta bands and maybe a few other bands.
It is supposed to be out toward the end of September I believe.
So, let me know if you want to hear a sampler of the Magna
Carta bands and what other bands you want to hear. Send the email
directly to me.

If they added vocals, then they MUST have done some other stuff. I didn't
even realize that it was different from the RS gig, but I haven't really
listened to the Zep medley.
I'm kinda bummed that the PMU riff isn't at the end of the Big Medley. :(
There's no production credits for the advance CD. Was it Prater?

To all guitar-playing 'jammers,
Have any of you entered any guitar contests where you had to send in a
tape of your playing? The reason I ask this is I need some opinions on
what is the best attitude to take towards the contest. They want a 92
second sample displaying style, techical ability and originality.
It would be easy to shred for 90 seconds, but I was thinking of
incorporating different components into the sample. Also, do you think I
should record it in parts or do it all in one take? I'm not sure whether
to include backing tracks or just do a raw take (you know, feel versus
planned soloing).
Any input would be much appreciated!

Strangely enough, the UAGM solo always got on my nerves. I can't
stand the beginning, especially. I can't explain it, just an
emotional response. Actually, most of JP's solos don't really
do anything for me. The one in Erotomania (after the Bach part)
is one notably exception... I get chills (sartori).
