Can it be that nobody knows any stats on DT record sales? I asked
about this a couple of days ago and, among all the messages about hair length,
I have seen no reply. I would be really appreciative if anyone could
give me any statistics on DT's album sales (or any other prog band, for
    that matter). Thanks!

Ex-Vixen drummer Roxy Petrucci is _somehow_ related to DT axeman John Petrucci.

Has anyone got proof? I mean...in some strange way, the kinda look like they're
    related... cousins?

Since you said, presume, you don't know for sure. I thought that DT
sometimes improvised jams? Was this an improvised thing? I'm sure that they
had some structure to it before, but it may have been very improvised. If
that was the case, maybe what Myung had intended to play didn't come out
right. Or maybe he choked and played the lousy bit that he did.

    > And that's the main problem. Why do you think John doesn't
    > feel the need to solo or improvise or be in the center of
    > the music and present his personal music while all of the
    > great players emphasize on that?

All the great ROCK players? I don't know about that. Geddy often improvises
    in a song but not a just-Geddy-solo. I could do a solo but I don't feel the
need. Maybe he just doesn't WANT to. That's not to say that he didn't suck
on that solo. Maybe he did, but maybe he really does not want to solo.

    > I like John Myung. I think he's an outstanding player. So
    > why don't I get to hear John Myung's music instead of
    > hearing his nice riffs and personal flavors in DT songs -
    > maybe because there is no real John Myung music.

You have that wrong. That IS Myung's music. Why isn't it? Why does he have
to take a solo to express himself? Maybe he expresses himself best within
the structure of a song rather than a freeform solo. Ever hear a jazz
    bassist take a walking solo? Lot's of people don't think that's a solo. I
was assured by a very good teacher I had that it is and sometimes it's the
    best thing to play.

    > So maybe you should listen to that Jam session.

Well, I would love that. Where can I get a recording?

    > Everyone isn't a soloist - correct. So they don't solo.

I have a recording of Charlie Parker. Bird takes a solo and it's great.
Then the trumpet player solos and it's horrible. It's really bad. It's
    Miles Davis.

So Myung took a bad solo. So bad, that it actually wrecked the music. That
sounds like it was improvised because nothing on the albums wrecks the
music and that is surely composed. I really don't think it takes soloing to
express yourself. I am very satisfied playing bass. I rarely get the urge
to solo. Maybe I'm no better than Myung. I can solo. It isn't always that
good but I've taken some nice solos (if I do say so myself ;). I just don't
think that it's essential. How you gonna learn to solo if you don't do it?
If someone puts you down, you aren't likely to want to do it again.

    Hi all,
My name is Takumi Akiyama. I'm Japanese. I've been a Ytzejammer for two
weeks and enjoy your discussions very much.

    1. I have some questions. I knew DT by WDADU album and I like "Status
Seeker" very much. I went their concert in Japan three times but I've never
heard them play this song. Have they ever played the song in the US or
anywhere ? If so, are there any live recordings ? I want to know about
other songs they haven't played in Japan i. e. Light Fuse and Get Away, The
Ones Who Help to Set the Sun, Innocence Faded, Scarred, Space-Dye Vest.

    2. Following is a personal mail to a jammer whose e-mail address I don't
    know. Please ignore.
Miss Kaoru Kobayashi, I heard about you from Mr. Michael Bahr. I'm
interested in "Subconcious" CD. I'd like you to contact me if you are not
    busy.

    Message-ID: <01HUFCLL2NR68X9CKY@asu.edu>

To the jammer in 925 who was talking (typing?) about DT's "flaws" as they were
    called:

I must disagree that John Patitucci is a great BASS soloist. I had _On_the_
Corner and _Sketchbook_ for a while but they just didn't do it for me. Yeah,
it's a taste thing, but for me, JPat is a good soloist, but come on, John
play a solo that is more indicative of the bass. Since he was a guitar player
before he was a bass player, it is no surprise that his solos are usually in
the upper register (true, that is why one would buy a 6 string, but) and his
groove playing generally uneventful. If you dig him, that's cool, as I have
yet to find many who like what I do (except for DT, ofcourse). Someone I may
suggest for y'all (bass players, esp) to take a listen to is Gary Willis.
He is found on Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech albums. They are a fusion group
who sound _a_lot_ like Weather Report. He is absolutely incredible.

    So, yeah, the DT content:
I would agree that in an improvised soloing situation, many of the DT guys do
not have their stuff together (please, no flames, I am writing from a Miles
Davis/John Coltrane improvisation viewpoint), but I can't blame them. After
all, the music is so technically difficult that I'd imagine they have practiced
their licks for hours upon hours, so, when they get to play something outside
of their norm, they may go, "Wow, I can now play the most beautiful melody I
have ever played! Oh, oops, I practiced so much for the last recording session
I don't know what to do."

About the JP solo on UAGM: John sat down (well, I guess he could've been
standing, but) and wrote out the entire solo to that tune! From a musicians
point of view, it is quite difficult to write "feel" (which is a trite word
which many use to describe the way Joe Satriani plays, but I won't start
another hair debate) into a solo. I've tried it, and it just doesn't work.
This is probably because I am not the player that I would like to be and I
just have not reached that level, but, I feel (there's that word again) that
a musician shows his/her raw emotion when they improvise a solo. Otherwise,
they are simply playing the emotiont they had when they wrote the tune.
I also remember reading in GFTPM (I think) that Petrucci said that the solo
was basically just a bunch of tricks that he threw together. Anyone read that
    too?

And I must contribute a humorous thought about the hair "debate":
Okay, many said that it's what's on the inside that counts, not the outside.
Well, hair comes from inside you, so, maybe it IS what is on the outside that
counts! (And I AM (repeat, I AM) just joking about this)

Sorry about the long post, I think this is my first.

    Later Rich Rochelle

Can any person be judged so completely in a few seconds? Don't make any

Hi, I'm jumpin on this whole Myung-thread...

I don't think we can judge his solo-abilities on just one performance (which I haven't heard), which we seem to do. Ok, on Ytsejam he's mostly just blowing his load, but that's what everybody else is doing on the song. The solos there are to impress with flashiness and not much about giving your whole soul, I don't consider neither the guitar- nor the keyboard-solos that much of tasteful soloing on Ytsejam and I don't think the bass solo is any worse than those (well, if he'd had a real sound at the time we could at least make out what notes are in the arpeggios and the tapping. But it fits the song and they do impress, look at the keyboard arpeggios on the LIT video.

It's also all depending on the mood you're in, if you're not a machine-player who just bang out your runs. If you're uncomfortable you'll most likely just run through your chops, but if you're inspired you'll do much more than that. I don't consider myself a bass-soloist, not even a real bass-player ;-) but from my experience that's the way it works. When I had just played for 3 months we did the first gig with my band, small place with seated people and tea-party atmosphere. We played covers only and it all sounded horrible, we finished off with Child In Time, which we hadn't rehearsed and got off and did a 15 minute jam that was way ahead of what we were capable of, just because the mood was right and everything clicked. Suddenly everybody stopped and looked at me and I was forced to solo at my first gig ever, hardly knowing anything about soloing (or playing for that matter) but because of the atmosphere, it came off. I didn't have the time to get uncomfortable I just went with it.

If John wasn't comfortable at that time he would do a lot worse than normal, and I can understand that. You could state that you should be able to present a minimum quality at any time, but I think that good unaccompanied bass solos are beyond that. I have not heard that many bass-solos that come off extremely well, I haven't heard Victor Wooten but I'm familiar with Pastorius, Sheehan, Patitucci and so on and they don't always impress. Sheehan just does his runs, Patitucci is such a wuss (I can't get into the soft-porn jazz solos I've heard), and Pastorius, well he has done the best for my money but you can easily hear the same themes come back quite often. I'm not slagging these guys but they haven't impressed me more than Myung.

I don't need to hear a bass solo at a DT show, it would be nice but I don't need it. I don't need a 6 minute drum solo, (heck they could play TOWHTSTS instead), but if Mike does want to do it, fine! I don't even need an unaccompanied guitar solo. I'd much more like the jamming together (Back Pain Jam ;-) than unaccompanied solos. Hell, if I wanted just to hear unaccompanied solos I'd go listen to all my old Deep Purple recordings from the early 70's. They do at leats 10 minutes each on some occasions. I think that's a bit old, playing together is the thing for me!

    Well, back to the usual!

    Paul Simon

    > On which Black Sabbath song(s) did Rick Wakeman play?

*** Reply to note of 08/23/95 18:59 Bass solos: Stu Hamm...."Quahogs Anyone?". My bass player put this on tape for me (a livepiece) and it's unreal!! One of the highlights is when he steps i nto "Linus and Lucy" (or is it "Lucy and Linus?" aka "The Peanuts Theme"). You'd think there were at least two bass players out there. Cool stuff. LATER-

I saw the Flecktones in concert last year - I'm a bassist and I went specifically to see Victor. He is absolutely incredible. He is most definitely very possibly the best bassist alive today. He is in my book.

By the way, if any of you 'Jammers are into jazz (I know most of you are), check out Bela Fleck and Flecktones. They play a bluegrass/jazz fusion that's very tasty. Bela Fleck is one of the premier banjo players in the world - Victor is a bass god- and their drummer (his name is Futureman) plays an instrument called a Synthaxe Drumitar - it's a cross between a drum machine and a guitar. Ya gotta see it to believe it. These guys DEFINE the word "creativity". Their CD "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" is probably their best. "Three Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is also good - that's their first since pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy left the band. Try "Three Flew..." and "...Hippo" to get a good sampling of the 'Tones.

    Hey all jammers!

Back to Penn State after a good, long summer. Just wanted to say HELLO and fill you all in on some of my DT experiences over the last few months....

-Being that I'm a drummer, I was able to go to the Modern Drummer Festival in May where Mike played. Originally, I thought I'd just be one of the few ticket holders who just got to shake his hand. However, through hours of chatting with the staff of Modern Drummer, I was invited to the MD private dinner-banquet after the weekend show (talk about an honor!). I walked in and noticed that only one table was open to sit at.....and who was sitting there eating dinner? Yep, Mike and Marlene! So, I got to talk to them all night. What a great time!! Real nice people and great to talk music with... -In addition, I was able to see DT at the Birch Hill country club in NJ. I'm sure this show was reported on during the course of the summer, so I won't blab-on with details. Needless to say, they were THE BEST I've ever seen them!

-(sorry about the non-DT info....) I feel the need to fill you all in on a group I was introduced to over the summer. They are a group from Germany called EVERON and their CD, called "Flood," is one of the best CD's I've heard in so many years!! They are MUCH less technical than DT (some sections of 7/8 or 7/4, with real interesting riffs), but have a sound very similar to DT's. However, rather than a guitar dominant sound, they have a full, orchestrated sound by strings, keyboard, and tons of piano. Their writing is so unbelievabely melodic (reminds me of a broadway show!) and very similar to the kind of writing like "Surrounded" or "Another Day." Anyway, unfortunately, they are hard to find because it is both an import and is filed under "Melodic/Progressive Rock," in which we all know is so hard to find to begin with! Rather than rambling on, I'll leave it at that. If anyone has heard of them or wants more info, please e-mail me because I'd REALLY like to pass their word around, or even learn more about them myself. Music THIS GOOD cannot be passed up without hearing!!!!!

Good to be back on the list once again. Can't wait until the new EP!!! Later......

Well, just got my Cygnus CD (along with a bonus video) from Mike Bahr (thanks!)... Been listening to it at work (about 5 times now) and am very impressed with the quality (and I'm usually dissapointed by boots). Considering that this was recorded from the audience in the 70's (correct me if I'm wrong), I have to say that this is one of the better sounding boots that I have heard (stereo effects and all!)... Any Rush fan should definately get this, it absolutely proves that Rush kick major butt live! The setlist is as follows: 1. Anthem 2. A Passage To Bankok 3. By-Tor and the Snow Dog 4. Xanadu 5. Something For Nothing 6. The Trees 7. Cygnus 8. Hemispheres 9. Circumstances 10. A Farewell To Kings This is just over 70 minutes of live Rush (and it was recorded in Tucson no less :)... (and you get to hear Geddy get mad at the audience for pushing up against the stage ;) Now, the liner notes are another story altogether... the cover picture is cool, but who are these guys in the "tribute" band? And I thought all of those songs were Rush "originals" <big sarcastic grin>! I think Mike did a great job on this CD and is definately worth getting. +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ | Michael Kizer -- Computer Sciences Corporation (Tucson, AZ) | | mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com (preferred) -or- mkizer@indirect.com | | http://www.indirect.com/www/mkizer/index.htm | | ^--> Check here for the Dream Theater Song Book... | | "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose." -Rush (The Band!) | +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+

Hmm...I thunk I dun posted on that a while ago.... Roxanne Petrucci, the drummer of Vixen, is John Petrucci's sister. Maxine Petrucci, another sister, was also lead guitarist in a band called Madame X with Roxanne on drums.
