    'jammers,

To those who commented on John Myung's bass solos. Feel fortunate you've
    had a
chance to see them play live! I think his solo would be outstanding if you
compared it to Michael Anthony's (even with the Jack Daniels bottle!). Check
out the bassist from Vixen if you want a cool live solo (if they're still
kicking around that is) - they're an all-female band.

Also, I think John Petrucci does have his own style even though in UaGM he
showed his bag of tricks. To me he's added a large amount of new
    material to
guitar playing, namely in melodic playing. These melodies are not
    necessarily
the guitar solos, but are within the song. One way I identify him is by the
blistering chromatic passages such as in UaGM, PMU, TTT, and a short part of
Innocence Faded(end). But hey, everyone has his (her) opinion!

I don't know who said it but....I too can't believe they took the "Please
don't go" out of ACOS. I just heard the Subcon. version and MY GOD!!!! It sums
up the whole story in 6 seconds of tape!!!! Our loss,I guess.

    Hi,

I just saw some people mentioning bass solos, and don't know if this
has been mentioned, but the best bass solo I have ever seen would be
Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. As anyone who has
seen him live would agree, you just cannot believe what you are seeing.
And he makes it look absolutely effortless...he can two hand tap faster than
most guitarists, play chords and bassline at the same time, plays as tightly
as a machine, can switch between fretted, fretless and cello with ease, and
even does crowd pleasing stunts like twirling around in the strap with the bass
remaining still and taking it off and heaving it around (while still playing
it of course). Most of all, he is incredibly musical and tasteful, not just
playing scales as fast as he can, but coming up with the neatest rhythms
    and lines you'd ever hear.

He is very possibly the best bass player alive today!

copy of ACoS and the guy almost laughed :( Well some jammers are

BTW, in the intro to Scarred, JP solo sounds alot like
Satriani on the couples of last song of Flying in a blue DREAM,
    anyone agree?

Interestingly enough, those "blistering chromatic passages" are a DIRECT
influence from Steve Morse. Listen to almost anything by Morse and you'll
understand why JP names him as an influence.

I play bass. I know how hard it is to jam out a solo unaccompanied. I
really like JM's basslines (when I can hear them) and that is enough for
me. If he can't put together a decent solo in your opinion, then why
crucify him? Hell, when I was playing in bands, only one band asked me
if I wanted a solo and they didn't mind when I declined the offer. Solo's
are no where as important as holding a song together with a good, tight
bassline. I prefer to blast away under the song and cut loose here and
there every now and then. I practise a basic solo just in case it is
needed, but that is a low priority cause up to now I have never needed it.
Some of the stuff JM plays in the songs is mind blowing - way beyond my
meagre talents, but that is where he is most comfortable, and hence you
get some great chops coming out.

Oh, the hair thing. The day before the message about short hair was sent =

    Hi,

Sorry to take up Ytsejam space with this (but obviously not that sorry
since I'm doing it). I need some computer help and wondered if anyone would
mind. Please email me directly if you care to respond.

Well, I just bought a new PC. Being a Mac user, I have some questions that
I hope some people can answer. I got the PC to run Linux because I'm going
to be learning Unix soon and I want a machine at home. I'm not willing to
spend much for a PC so I got, brand new, a Leading Edge Fortive 5000. It
has a Cyrix 486DX2/66 in it. I thought (and so did the salesman) that it
was an Intel processor. I thought that the Cyrix chips were slower. Any
comments on the Cyrix chip? Esp. for Linux. Also, what about Leading Edge?
    Any comments?

Also, does anyone know of a Mac ADB to PS/2 keyboard adapter so I can use
my excellent Apple keyboard instead of the $20 job they gave me with the
    Leading Edge?

Lastly, this computer didn't come with any disks. Not even a CD with
everything on it. It's setup with every driver and everything installed.
Where can I find out what I can delete? There's about 265 meg free on the
420 meg drive. I know a lot of the applications that are installed (which
I'm gonna delete) but what about the systems software?

Thanks a ton to anyone who can help.

    Hey all you Ytsejamers!!

The Dream Theater YTSEJAM (window) stickers are on the way. The date
the stickers will be available is: 09-03-95(and ready for ship-out).

Q: What do they look like and how can I get my own?

A: They are 3x3 inches. Clear, (made for windows..ie:so you can
place one on your car window for the whole world to see) The sticker
is placed on the inside of your car. The top of the sticker has "Dream
Theater written(curved printing) with readish ink). The middle of the
sticker has the DT "symbol"(in black). On the bottom, it has "Ytsejam"
written with redish ink(sideways). I am trying to get a picture on it
on a Web page somewhere.(be patient bout that/any help out there?).
There is a very limited printing of these stickers available. Just a
note to anyone who think I am doing this for financial gain...this is
just not true. It all started when I noticed some ytsejamers on the net
mention they are having a hard time finding window stickers to promote
one of there favorite bands. I saw a need, and wanted to fill it.
#2. Since I am not printing thousand(cost are much higher) and
therfore I can not "make thousands". I am lucky if I break-even. If
management wants me to help run there merchandising/fan club...thats a
whole other ball-game.(they can call me..(GRIN).

If you whould like your own sticker(s)...then you can write to
the address below. The stickers are only $2.00 each(includes shipping/
    and handling)U.S. Currency/Check/M.O.). Orders *Out-side the U.S. add

It is apparent that you have a lot of Jazz blood in your veins. And that's
great - but the situation where the last soloist gives you the look and you
are FORCED to solo is known to me in the Jazz area. In ROCK, and in DT
actually I presume the solo segments are carefully planned and measured -
John Myung knew he was going to solo. I presume he also had some ideas
before the show. But the fact remains: his ideas, thoughts, licks and
whatever the hell he had chosen to present in the show in MILAN on the I&W
tour was a bad piece of music.

    >Myung doesn't solo live. Someone asked him and he said he
    >didn't feel a need to. Probably he doesn't want to (or feel confident,
    >whatever).

And that's the main problem. Why do you think John doesn't feel the need
to solo or improvise or be in the center of the music and present his
personal music while all of the great players emphasize on that?
I like John Myung. I think he's an outstanding player. So why don't I
get to hear John Myung's music instead of hearing his nice riffs and
personal flavors in DT songs - maybe because there is no real John
Myung music. There is just John Myung - doing bass lines for the
band Dream Theater - putting his little ideas here and there.
It's some sort of a disappointment to me - when I first heard DT
songs and John Myung I thought there was a lot behind what John Myung
does - like in all the players I knew before. But it appears I was
    wrong...

    >I remember reading an article with Anthony Jackson. He said that
    >if he doesn't want to solo and won't because it won't be good. Now that guy
    >can play (no matter how opinionated he is :)

Anthony Jackson CAN play. I can't argue with that one. And he is also
a professional player who knows what is good for the music. So he knows
when to solo and when not too. But John Myung is not like that at all -
his solo ruined the piece (which was rather nice), he's the exact opposite
of Jackson - he doesn't know what's good for the music when it comes to
    soloing.

    >I never heard the jam with Myung's (non)solo but I wanted to throw out other
    >possibilities. What you say is true. But everyone isn't a soloist. I still
    >think that bass is a more difficult instrument on which to develop soloing

So maybe you should listen to that Jam session. Everyone isn't a soloist
    - correct. So they don't solo. especially in the bass part - we do got
a lot of things in mind - we got the rythme, melody and harmony all at
once. And recently we started soloing as well. It's hard but it's good
to have that hunger to touch every part of the music.

    >I mean, Petrucci, Derek, then what the hell is Myung gonna play to
    >follow those guys?

If you're creative enough you can override everybody. Even solo monsters
like Kevin Moore John Petrucci and Derek. If you believe in yourself you
can make people say "wow" when the guitar and keys do their stuff and
when you start doing you stuff they'll say: "Wow!!".

    >His influences are
    >also Irom Maiden and Rush. I don't listen to Iron Maiden but I've never
    >heard Geddy solo apart from embellishing a line in a song. So I may be
    >making excuses for him. Maybe he's a lousy soloist but I don't think being
    >a soloist is necessary to be fully explore his music.

That's nice. So it's like when a serial killer that was mutilated as
a child cannot be blamed? Besides, John myung goes against the flow
all the time! first when he went to bass after the violin. then when
he took that six string TOBIAS, even though the music he had known
(Geddy Lee, Iron Maiden...) was a straight 4 string bass music.
So what's that? The end? Now can he rest in piece? I don't think so.
why not jump on that too?

I just got LATM this weekend and have been listening to it quite extensively.
It got me wonder about something though. What does James do with himself
during instrumental songs or long instrumental sections like Metropolis.

Does he stand there quietly, does he go off-stage for a drink, or does
    he groove to the music?

    Just wondering,

    Jeffrey

I found a place on the web that sell bootleg CDs very cheaply
(only $16.99 per CD). They had a few DT CDs, so I thought I'd let
people know about them. I have no idea how legitimate they are, but
they do have a phone number you can call.

    Hi everybody!
Well, Will mentioned the band Vixen in the last digest. A little trivia
question: How is Vixen connected to DT?

Well, my friend Aviad Hay started the debate on soloing. I'd just like to
say that I think that Portnoy's soloing is also very childish at times. I
can only think about the solos in "Wake Up" and "Lost in the Sky", but
they both demostrate my point perfectly: Mike's soloing is usualy nothing
but a mindless array of fast chops and pointless "running around the kit"
    typo things.
    Oh, well...
    Take Care everyone

I know there is the telnet "cdnow" and "cdconnection" but I don't have
telnet access! Is there a rare record web page or a ftp site?

    Any help appreciated!

--For them that's requested info on DT shirts:

This was posted a few months ago on the JAM:

DT shirts: info from JAM 883 (see also 816):
    Jason Giles: jgiles@crl.com
    WEB: www.crl.com/~jgiles/shirts.html
    ftp: ftp.crl.com/users/jg/jgiles, login: anonymous; password: <e-mail address>
This is dated 9 July 95, the post said a few shirts were still available at
    that time.

I do not know if Jason has any more shorts, or has plans to print more.
Please contact him. PS, I hope Jason doesn't flame me for this; just
trying to be helpful. But if he gets enuf requests maybe he'll print more
    shirts???

    >Question Part one: What band was Patrick Moraz in before doing keys on
    >Yes' 'Relayer' album/tour? Answer is 'Refugee'

    ------------------------------

What was the name of the band that Moraz was in BEFORE the above mentioned
    earlier band?
Answer is 'Mainhorse', this band also featured Jean Ristori, who
was also mentioned as Prof. Ristori on PM's 'i' album

In which progressive band did Moraz play AFTER Yes? Answer is 'Moody Blues'

Jon Anderson: Olias of Sunhillow (concept album)
    Steve Howe: Beginnings
Chris Squire: Fish Out of Water
    Alan White: Ramshackled
Patric Moraz: i -'a stylized letter 'i' font?': also concept album

    New Triva Question: Part Two:

In The Nice, Keith Emerson was famous for what musical piece which was
taken from which Broadway musical by which late famous composer/conductor?
Note: KE still plays this as part of his encore medley with ELP.

Which other well-known rockband (not necess. prog) also plays(played) a
piece based on the above mentioned Broadway musical? (hint the original
composer's name was included in the song credits)

What other group played a song by the same name as that of the above
mentioned piece by KE/Nice? Although this song has the same name, it was
compsed by which other contemporary artist? What is the historical
    significance of this song?

Who was the other member of The NICE (besides KE, Lee Jackson & Brian
Davison) and which band did he go to after he left The NICE? Name other
famous members of this latter band.

On which Black Sabbath song(s) did Rick Wakeman play?

I also liked the other triva questioins that were asked/answered by others.

Steve Howe played that guitar part on Queen's Innuendo? I think DT might
do a good cover of this song.

__Kitaro video was pretty good, some of it sounded alot like Pink Floyd,
but they broke it up with pledge breaks, makes for a crappier VCR tape.

--DT's top 100? have they officially recorded that many yet? well maybe
if you count all the commercial & boot versions separately....
