'IS ELP PROGRESSIVE' was asked in a recent JAM. ELP, Yes, Genesis and Pink
Floyd are the quintessential, historical archetypes of Progressive Rock.
They's the ones that really set the foundation for Progressive.

Rush & Queensrhyche would fulfill the same role in Progressive-Metal Rock.

Somebody may want to flame me on this, but I wouldn't call this an opinion,
but rather a FACT. (Others might want to add to these, but you certainly
can't leave'm out. Didn't include King Crimson, cuz, IHMO they were/are
sometimes too experimental to be easily accessed by the public; this
    doesn't mean I don't like them, I do.)

I posted this on the King's X (Gretchen) list, but I thought non-KX's might
be interested in the following as well. (sorry to waste your bandwidth if
    you're on both lists)

--In Gretchen 26, David Crossen was wondering about the KX -- Dream Theater
connection. As I've mentioned here before I found out @ KX thru the DT
YTSEJAM list. Not to flame non-DT KX listeners, I've noted a wider
diversity of musical background/preferences among DT fans (i.e., my friend
Dale, both DT/KX, has Megadeth & Phantom of the Opera on his playlist). I
know there are a fair # of DT fans also on Gretchen, or at least mention
KX. Not to overstress the role of KX's faith/beliefs in their
music/lyrics, I am quite surprised by the # of overt (& covert) Christians
and other people with a spiritual outlook, even they who profess to be
'non-religious' on YTSEJAM. I believe that this carries over to high % of
DT who also listen to KX. Also I believe this is the answer to another
recent post mentioning the commonality of three other groups often seen on
Gretchen (DT,GC (Galactic Cowboys) & Extreme)

    To Marc and others:
Maybe john myung took a bad solo. And he got chocked, and a dove that
was flying in the area pissed on his pickups. Maybe. It's a possibility.
And offcourse I accept the possibility that he just gave up soloing
because he doesn't feel the need to, or he doesn't feel comfortable
enough to express himself through soloing. And his music is reflected
through his background stuff on DT songs. Nice. A cool bassist.
The solo was bad. It made me think of John's standards - which seem
to be not so high because of that. It just seemed to me that he's the kind
of guy that would try anything. And touch everything. And even may do it
    well.

I agree with what you say. I like what he does though. Very much.
Maybe the guitar similarity and 6 string issue is just a reflection
of what he thinks on the bass. And his groovs are great, IMHO.

Thank you. That was a very nice thing of you to say.

I would have never said what I said about John on the basis of just one
solo. It's my collective view on his short licks and flavors he put on
jams - the solo on the I&W show was a summery of everything. Of everything
    that he has done.

Sorry if that upset you. or anyone else.
Oh BTW: He seem to control the solo very good - the sound seemed good
enough it's just that there was nothing to control - it was a real bad
    piece of music.

Let's finish this thread now and I'll just say:

John is a very good rythem player. Any band would love to have
such a dedicated player - and we're lucky he's in DT, it just
    makes it better.

And as Marc Raspass put it : "not everyone is a soloist", and that's
    true - john's probably not a soloist.

    Later.

    Aviad.

I kinda got an idea from Screaming in Digital (The Queensryche Digest) the
other day. Someone was asking about 'Ryche bitmaps, and since I was kinda
looking for some myself, I was wondering if any other Ytsejamers would be
interested in trading some DT (or really any other) bitmaps. If there is
some interest, I would almost be inclined to volunteer my time compiling,
copying, and distributing them. I think it would be fairly easy...send a
disk and a little postage money, and we sould all be fortunate enough to have
DT (or QR or whatever) wallpaper or screensaver modules. Let me know what
    you think, anything's possible.

On a side note...if anyone is in the Quad City area, drop me a line. If
you've seen anyone with Iowa license plates which say "Ytsejam", that was me.
     Take care!!

    ------------------------------

And one more thing...what in the heck do I do to read the rest of the 'Jam
which comes in the downloadable files? I'm still kinda learning this AOL
    thing...its not like at school!

To answer the question of some ytsejammers, John Petrucci is absolutelty not
related to Roxy Petrucci from Vixen. I asked him this question in Paris 2
years ago and that made him smile. They are not from the same family and he
    doesn't know her.

Do some of you saw Derek on stage with Alice Cooper this summer? He is
supposed to tour with him in the US...

One last thing, I went to London to see the warm up gig of Metallica at the
Astoria (August 23rd). It was a killer show, but they did not cover a DT song!!!
I think they could make an interesting version of a track like "Lie"...

    Bye now,

there you can see what the shirts look like and what the cost is, etc.

Hey all. I've been in lurker mode all summer, but you don't want to hear about
    it.

I'm inquiring as to the status of that fellow Jammer from Japan that offered to
send some of us here in the states some copies of the Japanese version of ACOS
(with the bonus tracks not found on the U.S. version) I can't remember his
name but he offered to do this a few months ago. I just want to make sure this
is still going strong. I'm sure I'm not the only jammer here who's willing to
wait a few extra weeks or whatever to get his hands on a copy of what's surely
going to be a hard-to-find copy of that release!

So, if you have a list of people you're willing to do this for, put me on there
too if you would! I can't wait! (I wish I had some spare Yen lying around,
but alas, I do not. ;)

    Thanks again...

yes, that would be cool...except instead of sending a disk via mail,
why not just send it via e-mail, or through IRC (/dcc), or set up some

i thought about doing it (after getting the Japanese Awake CD already)....
but because i got the Japanese version, i didn't get the domestic version.
so to the record company it looks like i didn't buy one, and therefore
they probably think there isn't too much interest in DT here(therefore
    no tour here).
i know that one person doesn't make a difference, but if there were more
like me, then it could be significant.
so what am i saying? wait for the domestic release...don't get an import
unless you are planning to get the domestic as well.
we wouldn't want DT to be dumped by their record label because there is
no interest (ie. lack of sales of domestic cds).

    what do others think?

i know that the urge to get bonus tracks is strong, but i'm sure they'll
come out on b-sides here anyway (EVE was a bones with Awake, and it
was later released as a b-side).

I got the job I was waiting on (finally). Its full-time temp right now,
but could go to permanent in a month. Trouble is, its close enough to
commute, but far away to a pain driving 5-days-a-week. Good: its working
with computers, setting up custom systems, mostly MS-DOS machines and my
immediate supervisor is about my age, and a former neighbor.

What this means? I'll probably get to access my Email/internet less often,
so don't panic if u Email, & its a few days for a response. My current
Email address, since its my dad's anyway, will still be good for a while.
Maybe get access at my new job; THEY have access, but that doen't
necessarilly mean that I will have access there.

This means my Trivia questions/answers will probably be given out at
greater time intervals, if you are indeed interested in them.

    Another Yes trivia question:
The original guitarist for Yes left after the second album, Who is he and
with which Prog/pop band did he record with in early 80's. (Hint: although
they recorded mostly their own songs, they did a cover of another song that
was originally partially done in German.)

Just reserved my copy of Acoustic Dreams, can't wait

of internet touch for a few days while I get my new account at my new alma
mater-NYU (<-proud). I should be back tuesday or thursday with a new
address. Incidently, since my whole family uses AOL, I can still recieve mail
here, but it won't get checked that often. TTFN!

    -Dan (Potestatem@aol.com)

PS-Not that I think any of you are up night wondering, but "Potestatem" is
    the latin word for "Power"

That would be ELP, in Karn Evil Nine (Third Impression). Awful awful
    lyrics.

And on soloing, again does an instance in the past matter? Me, I don't like unaccompanied solos but when it comes down to it, how can you blame JM for soloing when there is one class of people who insist on boring everyone--that is, drummers. Even MP's solo in LIT, while interesting the first time, is damn dull, and I'd be hard pressed to name a good drum solo.

Drum duets, on the other hand, are fantastic. B'Boom!
