I apologize to all if I gave misinformation regarding J.
Petrucci's relation to Roxy and Maxine. I read an interview a few years
ago in which J. Petrucci was asked about them, and he alluded to their
being in the same family. Perhaps this was a figment of the writer's
imagination? I was simply basing my statements on this interview. I do
know that Maxine and Roxy are most certainly related, however.
Regarding the question of whether or not guitar lessons are worth
the time and money, I would have to say that during the first couple of
years, yes, they are. My first 6 or 7 years playing guitar I took
lessons, and was instructed in many different musical styles, as well as
the personal styles of the instructors. This did a great deal in the
broadening of my playing abilities, as well as expanding my musical
tastes. After I had taken most all of the lessons that were available to
me, I simply practiced on my own. Barring a physical impairment, most
anyone can get to John Petrucci's skill level if they are willing to put
in the time and effort required. Practice sessions lasting 7 to 10 hours
can do wonders for endurance and "muscle memory", as well as sparking ideas!

Hello,
For the person who was wondering, Iluvatar's new album entitled
Childhood is due out the Second week of September. I have heard a couple
of songs from it and it makes the first album pale by comparison. For
those who are not familiar with this band, they are a prog-rock band from
Baltimore in the Yes / Genesis vein of music with several epic tracks.
Lots of old keyboards high in the mix on the new album, the guitarist
uses a lot of Hackett-style riffs on the first album, but he breaks out
into more solos on the new album, vocalist is good with a higher-end voice.
I also know the guitarist, vocalist, and keyboardest (and the
ex-drummer), so I thought I would plug them.
I started reading the reviews of the new Cygnus boot and a personal peeve
of mine is fadeouts during songs. I will try to remain calm. I have
that Chicago show and that didn't sound all that bad, the sound quality
is probably pretty good, I mean it would have to be exceptional to be
better than RnR92, which is a DAT recording. Still a big thanks to Mike
for making this stuff available, a boot is a boot, so expectations need
to be held low.
Later,
Mike

I'm a bass player and I have to vote YES on lessons. There is a common
misconception that lessons can be bad for you. There is no way that
learning more about music could ever hurt you. Take some lessons. Learn
some good technique. Get exposed to other styles and ideas. Learn some
scales and chords. All good stuff. After 2 years of private lessons, 1.5
years at Berklee, 1 year of private acoustic bass jazz lessons, 1 year of
private acoustic bass classical lessons, 2.5 years of classical music
school (ear training, piano, harmony, orchestral playing), I still like to
listen to lots of heavy rock bands. Not all are playing the most amazing
complex stuff but it's good. It's just good to listen to and no amount of
musical training will take that away if that's what you like.
I don't think you implied this with that question but it's something that I
needed to say :). Lessons are a good idea :).

Hey Jammers,
Here are my $.02. . .
Although I love to hear a great ad lib solo, I think that a written lead
(technically a solo if performed only by one player) is at least or even more
impressive than ad lib solo. The ability to play a written line and then repeat
it later in the song should not be overlooked. When I first heard DT, JP's runs
in Pull Me Under are what caught my attention. Also, I believe that playing in
sync with other musicians takes more skill than merely showing off what you can
do by yourself. Each member of DT is a great musician; however, it is their
ability to play together that sets them apart from the rest.

Being that I am an ex-keyboardist (well, still am, but VERY rusty.. :D )
I would say that whatever instrument you take up, you should take lessons.
Not only they teach you the ins and outs of the instrument itself but any
shortcuts that can help your technique. Also too, if you learn to read
music instead of just depending on tabs, you will open yourself up to
more possibilities and not find yourself crippled if a certain piece of
music you like isn't available in tab.
I have a friend that can play by ear and by tab but he always tells me that
he wished that he would have taken lessons and learned how to read music. He
tells me that eventhough he can play by ear (for the most part), he still is
at a disadvantage playing.
How long will it take me to play all of John's solo's in Erotomania?
On guitar : forever.
On keyboards : close to forever (I told you, I'm rusty. :D )
On computer : as fast as I can type in the notes. Ha, ha, ha. Do I still
count as a musician?? :D

things:

When I read this, I thought: hah! no problem... Mike's going to be making
his "When Dream and Today Unite" CD around X-mas, and a lot of people will
all the happier for it. Then I read this from Mike a few 'jams later:
>would have meant something. Don't worry, it won't affect Acoustic Dreams

Hey jammers!
Just want to comment about musicians and lesson taking. I've been a
drummer for the last 13 years of my 22-year old life. There hasn't a day
gone by that I haven't thought about studying with someone; whether it be
on drumset, or classical percussion, or whatever. You never know along the
line who will help you, or what TINY little secret you may pick up from a
teacher that could open doors to a whole new world. Now, I have an
assistantship in Penn State, which involves 75% of my time here, not
studying (class-wise), but TEACHING. Being a part of the teaching world
makes me realize just how important "learning from someone else" really is!
In addition, seeing my students accell from week to week is almost as
stimulating as seeing myself grow as a player. It's quite flaterring.
So, try to put away some foolish pride on your part if you refuse to take
lesson. You know, guys like Eddie Van Halen and others are, in fact,
"self-taught." But, keep in mind, out of 1 billion musicians out there,
there is only 1 Eddie Van Halen! Take some lessons; they WILL pay off!

That's hoping that DT will still be around in 20 years. Let's see
here...
DT's first album had part of their band name in it (DREAM). Rush's
first album had the band name in it (RUSH).
Rush had one band member leave after the first album (the drummer).
DT had one band member leave after the first album (the vocalist).
The new Rush drummer was MUCH better than the old one. The new
DT vocalist was MUCH better than the old one.
The new Rush drummer was Canadian. The new DT vocalist was Canadian.
The second DT and Rush albums had three-word titles with an
unimportant (non-capitalized) word in the middle (BY and AND).
The second albums had their first attempt at a long epic story
(By-Tor; and Metropolis).
Whoops! SOMETHING DOESN'T FIT! Rush's third album is not a very
good album, considering the quality of other Rush albums. DT's third
album is GREAT!
The third album has another epic attempt (Erotomania-Voices-Silent
Man; and the Necromancer).
The fourth album has a long mega-epic as all of side one (2112 and
ACOS).
Well, this is all I can think of. Tell me how I am doing.

Does anyone else worry for Mike Bahr's safety? After losing his

flashbacks from Sandra Bullock in "The 'Net." Not a great movie, but
pretty interesting in the context of our favourite CD maker's life.

According to the electronic list on CD Europe, the ACOS EP is given a
release date of 8/95 from Holland, and is ready to order! Do you
suppose this is just a matter of the company jumping the gun

This will usually not count as a solo - this tapping pattern that
repeats itself with an ascending chord progression is some sort
of a Bridge, or a C-part, not a solo. Than again it depends on how
you perceive the solo issue. For me (and others) a solo has contents,
melody, Progression, changes in feel, basically a story.
Never the less this little tapping segment IS spectacular! John uses
a typical Jaco Pastorius sound for tapping (most unusual) and it comes out
real good!

Hello jammers!
There is a subconscious track called Dead or Alive (Bon Jovi's) and
I was wandering if anyone can give me info regarding Where it was recorded,
when, how, who was playing, who did the solo, who are the drunken guys,
why do they sound high pitched (HELIUM??) where did you get this from,
who's singing and everything else. Whoever managed to get this one is
a master!
I've just received the bootleg WAKEUP!, and I'd have to say Derek
is very cool - his solo there is great! the heavy JAM is great also,
and the show is very good. Too bad somebody messed up with John Myung's
sound - the trebles are too high!!!
But still James Labrie has some problems there - Why does his voice
get down so often? Why doesn't he go to a professional therapist
about this? Because sometimes that guy can be so wonderful on shows -
LIVE AT THE MARQUEE, for instance, in songs like Metropolis, The Killing
Hand etc.

DREAM THEATER: "ACOUSTIC DREAMS"
Information and Update
Current to 8/30/1995
NOTE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
I found the culprit of my account's untimely death...
Hi all! This is the latest information on Acoustic Dreams, the new
LIMITED EDITION Dream Theater CD I will be producing. It will be a numbered,
hand-initialed limited print just like Subconscious was.
============================================================================
DISCLAIMER: Acoustic Dreams falls into a grey area of law as an uncopyrighted
recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production
occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA,
it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such.
This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting
nothing for this.
============================================================================
Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will
want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know
I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not
think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit
of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)
1. What is Acoustic Dreams?
2. What is the release schedule?
3. How can I get my own copy of Acoustic Dreams?
4. Orders received.
============================================================================
1. What is Acoustic Dreams?
Hi all! Allow me to introduce myself, if you aren't familiar with me
yet. I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special-edition CDs. I noticed a lot of
the mass-manufactured bootleg offerings were spiralling quite high in price
and yet offered little for the die-hard fan, and I concocted a scheme by
which I could make around minimum wage by producing CDs on my own, CDs that
would fill the demand for REAL rarities and special songs, unreleased items,
live shows, and the like.
Basically, since no CD plant will print them for me, I have to rent
studio and equipment time and do it myself. So far, it's working. :)
Fortunately, and for this I am very relieved, my CD efforts so far
have been incredibly well-received by the net community, especially the
Ytsejam mailing list. I just do what I can do and leave the rest up to God,
and I guess the Almighty isn't disappointing you folks. People from all walks
of life, all countries of the world, both sexes, all races, and all religions
have joined in on the Subconscious and Cygnus projects, and I am very happy
to have you all along for the ride. I'll keep making CDs as long as you folks
are willing to keep buying them. Thanks so _very_ much... :)
And now, it's time to get Acoustic Dreams together.
Well, this is the next CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater
Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent
Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the
form of a CD. Trust me. :) I am fervently hoping that the finished product
is well-liked. I've created the master DAT and submitted it so I can get the
glass master made.
Here's the final tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams. I know many
were hoping I'd find more stuff, but I've pretty much scraped the
barrel dry at this point. The only other things of similar sound
quality I could find were in soundboard shows that ought to be
released to CD in their entirety.
Acoustic Dreams
1. Another Day
2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream
3. Wait For Sleep
4. The Silent Man
5. Lie (boogie version)
6. Tears (Rush cover)
7. O Holy Night
Electric Extras
8. Perfect Strangers (with Bruce Dickinson on vocals)
9. 6:00 (performed in session with a much better mix)
10. Caught In A Web (another better performance)
Bonus Tracks (acoustic)
11. Voices (just a small part of it was all there was) acoustic
12. Bad (U2 cover) acoustic
I hope that once you've heard it, you will, like me, have your
breath taken away by the beauty of the acoustic tracks and the clarity and
sharpness of the electric mixes. As good as Cygnus sounded, this is easily
and by far the best sounding CD I will have ever made.
2. What is the release schedule?
Here is the current schedule of releases as I see it (all dates estimated):
NOW - Rush: Cygnus released/shipping
NOW - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" ordering begins
09/30/1995 - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" released/shipping
10/15/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" ordering begins
11/15/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" ordering begins
11/30/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" released/shipping
12/25/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" released/shipping
02/--/1996 - Rush: To be announced
04/--/1996 - Live or Type O-Negative: To be announced
06/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced
Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)
Dream Theater "In The Subconscious" - 1 piece
Also known as Subconscious #000, this original pre-mix master CD
has all the songs in their original, unrefined state, and was
sold along with the rest. Quite the collector's piece, I'd wager.
Is on a gold CD-R with test cover.
Dream Theater "Subconscious"
Released 04/03/1995 - Limited Edition - 500 copies - sold out
Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Season.
Rush "Cygnus" Alpha Test Print
Released 08/07/1995 - 5 pieces - given away to random testers
Identical to the regular release of Cygnus except has a different
cover (original white cover), has dropouts as-is (no fadeouts),
and is in a few other ways just a "test print". Only edition of
Cygnus ever to say "Rush: Cygnus" and not "Cygnus Tribute" because
I was able to make the bland black & white covers myself.
Rush "Cygnus"
Released 08/14/1995 - Unlimited Edition - still available
Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour.
Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams"
Currently in pre-ordering.
To be released 09/30/1995 - Limited Edition of 500 copies
Each copy will be hand signed/numbered in gold for authenticity.
Contains beautiful unplugged performances.
Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary"
To be released 11/30/1995 - Unlimited print
Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989,
two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for
this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it.
Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite"
To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000.
Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on
vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality.
Some of these still need quality boosts. (Light Fuse, STS...)
The following are all "Work in Progress" releases...
Rush other titles I'm considering (for any of the given shows):
Land's Edge, Storm World, Lifeforce, Arena of the Ancients...
Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard
Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set?
Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo
This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether
to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar.
Rush "Sleight of Mind" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto
This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so
who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good...
+Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo
It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you
would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many
people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when
I find an overwhelming demand for them. :)
Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo
A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many
copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than
a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is
a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a
lot of interest, and away we go! So far I've had a few positive
replies... much much more are needed though.
Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff.
Possible shows:
Osaka soundboard from late 1992
Hamburg soundboard from spring 1993
Vocalist auditions
various excellent DATs recorded in Texas
3. How can I order a copy of Acoustic Dreams?
Finally, I am going to go ahead and let the ordering begin, because
I can tell everyone's excitement level is peaking at this point. :) I will
say this in advance: I expect it to come out 9/30 or thereabouts (I'm going
to try and beat my own schedule) and that's two months away, folks. If that
dosen't bother you too much, I guess it won't bother me either. However, I'm
one of those guys who hates having things take too long. :)
I say this because Subconscious took an unbelievably long time to
turnaround due to delays in the making of it, and despite my best efforts,
Cygnus is going a bit too slow for my taste as well (though it's still within
the predicted schedule, it was a schedule I had been planning to beat). So I
am trying to jumpstart Acoustic Dreams so there's NO DAMN WAITING. :)
Here's the nitty gritty then:
RESERVATIONS. I'll take them, to save you a COPY, but not necessarily a
_specific copy_. In many cases, people who request special numbers
such as birthdays and so on will get them. But people requesting a
specific low number are going to find that they're all sold. Which
brings me to the next point:
ORDERS. The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill
in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all.
I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people
get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to
still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these
decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.
Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss this if you missed
Subconscious. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that
there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would
be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.
Blanks, materials, studio time, etc is cheaper per unit for a
production line of 1000 than for 500, which is why Cygnus was cheaper for the
Ytsejammers. Acoustic Dreams, alas, must remain $25. I was hoping to bring it
down to $21 or $20 but that wouldn't be cost effective. I think I may be able
to do that for the Public Affection CD, however.
Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for
$25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the
address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CD you're ordering (after
all, Cygnus is still in ordering) and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before,
international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient
for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a
first option, but a backup plan. :) Also, to pool opinions: would you all
want me to include a number list as orders are received?
The address and so on is me at:
Mike "Acoustic Dreamer" Bahr
3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
Chandler, AZ 85224
My home telephone number, available as a courtesy to you, is
1-602-777-0501. I am usually not home on weekends (band practice) so try
during the week, between noon and 9pm pacific time, for best results. Also,
please use discretion when handling this number, as it is, after all, my own
home phone, and I will be very confused if a stranger calls at 3:00 AM. :)
I trust you Jammers to be cool about it, as you always have in the past.
4. Orders received.
This is NOT "reservations"... it's paid-for orders. If you have a
reservation, it's still valid, trust me. :) These are just the numbers that
are filled. Also there are a handful of "saved numbers" in there.

Subject: Cygnus update (from the Rush list.)
Message-ID: <199508290843.BAA03488@bud.indirect.com>
This is actually the same update the Rush newsgroup gets. They're not
familiar with me, so rather than boring them by telling them how I make
the CDs, I just leave it to their imagination. The price for Ytsejammers
is still only $23, even though the text below says $25, which is the
price for non-Jammers.
NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: RUSH - CYGNUS
UPDATE for 8/30/1995
NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
QUICK NOTE: The first 200 CDs have already been shipped! More to come!
I am sending them via Us Postal Service book rate. This means
it can sometimes take a week or more for it to make it to you
(though people from the west coast seem to be getting theirs
in 2-3 days). I promise, I'm crankin' them out as fast as is
humanly possible!
Hi all! It's time to update y'all on the CD project. I have finally
received my shipment of the Rush CYGNUS CD, a CD with an incredible sound
board show from the mystical Hemispheres tour, on it. And I guess I will go
ahead and take orders for it... if you like, you can email a reservation
before you send your check or MO. Here's the info:

I did a pre-order project like this for the Dream Theater mailing list
a few months back and it worked out very, very well. Any of you who want a
reference or voucher for me, direct your question at any DT fan who is on
the Ytsejam list, and I'll let their judgment be the Word.
How to order:
(PLEASE ALLOW 3 to 4 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.)
-A lot of you might have forgotten about this. Since the oldest
orders in the queue that are not yet mailed are only 3 weeks
old, I'm catching up slowly but surely.
Send a cashier's check or money order (made out to me) to:
Michael Bahr
Limelight Music
3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
Chandler, AZ 85224
Note: I'm just a humble fan with a project going, not a store
or CD warehouse... the dealers and mailorder places can give
way better prices on other common boots so I don't have or
sell any of them. Limelight is what I put on my business license
so that I could pay sales tax, thus nobody would ask how I was
getting all this money to deposit and why I'd dump thousands
at a time into CD production. :)
The price is as follows:
$25 US - base
free - postage within the USA
$1 - postage in Canada
$2 - postage to anywhere else
So it would cost $25 to send it to Strawberry, Arizona... $26 to
send it to Halifax, Nova Scotia... and $27 to Saitama, Japan.
A note on quality. A lot of people ask me how does the sound compare
to A Right to Passage and Spirit of St. Louis. Well, I guess I can give you
all a rough idea. Speaking comparatively, ARTP emphasizes the booming bass
sound the most and has the muddiest guitar and vocals of the three; SOSL has
the booming bass and great vocals, but a muddy guitar, muddy drums, and too
much high-end distortion, and Cygnus has less boom (the drums still give a
mighty THUMP, but you hear the "thwap twang thwap" of Geddy's bass strings
as opposed to an indistinct booming resonance), the stereo separation is
clearer, and vocals are the clearest of the three. Vocals are really the
standout on Cygnus... it sounds like Geddy's standing in your room. So if you
want to crank up the subwoofer and crumble the walls, buy ARTP. But if you
like to be able to hear bass slap and cool effects, try Cygnus. As some
people have noted, there are some DROPOUTS that have been masked as well as
I could. They were present on the master tape, so I couldn't do much but
try to repair the gaping holes they left. I hope they won't ruin it for you.
Finally, remember that concerts back in 1978 didn't emphasize punch like
they do today, and you WILL have to crank the bass if you want this Cd to
thump-thump-boom away. It's guitar- and vocal-heavy balancewise.
Now then, back to ordering via cashier's check or MO.
Why use a cashier's check or MO? Besides the fact that they can't
bounce, they are traceable both ways. You know that if you don't eventually
get a CD or a refund, I'll be in deep shit. :) It's really the safest way to
buy, as I myself have been burned in net dealings before, I do my best to
alleviate those fears where my projects are concerned.
Apparently, this offer isn't as limited as I originally thought...
400 copies have been ordered so far. Still, this CD is bound to become
very valuable as it is a rare and much-coveted concert. Already, my first CD
offering "Dream Theater/Subconscious" is being re-sold by others for twice
what I originally sold them all for. And I'm afraid it sold out
completely... there are no more left to sell!
PLEASE! When you send the money order, TELL ME that you're ordering
the Cygnus CD. Most of you are already doing this, I just wanted to make sure
you all knew, as I am still wrapping up work on Subconscious, as well as
taking the early pre-orders for the next Dream Theater CD. Also, be sure to
include your email address. It's quite hard to get ahold of you if something
goes awry, without it. :)
If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or call me
at (602) 777-0501, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm Pacific time. I'm sorry
that I don't have an answering machine (as this is my home line, it's mainly
available to all of you as a courtesy) but if I'm there, we'll chat. I do
have classes these days so I may or may not be there. I do have work and
school like the rest of you, after all. Please understand why you may not
catch me at home the first three or four times you try. If the phone rings,
I *WILL* answer it if I'm there, and we *WILL* chat, that much I will
promise you. If you miss me entirely and want *me* to call *you*, I will
do so if you leave your number in email. Please understand that it will
probably be brief as I'm a starving student with a phone bill. :)
Thanks all!

"Was he successful?"
"I don't know..." Silk looked over the parapet. "Does bouncing count?"
