Hey Jammers..just want to talk on a few DT subjects..

Last digest somebody brought up the possibility of Metallica covering
Lie, I find two problems with this. First, there's so possible way James
Hetfield could sing it like James Labrie. Second I would be really
surprised if Kirk Hammet could play all of JP's solos..

Next, I know this subject would be dead but I've been away for a while so
I deserve a response..=) blind melon. I think a lot of the reasons why
Blind Melons arguments sound just plain stupid, is because they never
give a valid argument! Some of the quotes were, "this guitar playing is
just stupid!" or "I bet they have big poofy hair". None of this means
anything, they can't even think of a reason why THEY don't like it except
that "the guitarist has a rig that lights up with a million lights when
    he plays.."

Last, how many Jammers are musicians? There's been a lot of talk on the
guitar newsgroups lately about whether or not lessons are the way to go.
Concidering that all of DT are well educated musicians I would like to
know your opinions on this...also how long you think it will take YOU to
play all of John's solo's in Erotomania...:)

Have it, heard it, include it in my statement. The best thing about it is
    that it's fairly short.

Right now the best drum solo I can think of is Tim "Herb" Alexander's
on "Jellikit" on _Suck on This_. It's pretty neat, and more melodic.
Best of all, it's less than a minute.

Now the drum ensemble on Gentle Giant's _Playing the Fool_, that's a
    masterpiece.

Hey, if you think that's cool, have you seen/heard the drum solo (The Rhythm Method) from the CP tour or the RTB tour (which were somewhat different)? They were musical pieces unto themselves. No need for YYZ to be used as an intro for the Rhythm Method - Neil just started to play it as an entirely separate piece. Check out Rush 'n' Roulette '92 for an awesome SB copy of an entire RTB show.

This is a review of the new Rush "Cygnus" boot of the Hemispheres Tour. I received it yesterday so I've only heard it twice so far...

Overall, I'm afraid I'm disappointed; this recording was advertised to be "the best sounding rush show in existence; better than Rush n Roulette 92 and Pinkpop '78. I strongly disagree! Although this is a good recording for 1978, and the overall mixing is good due to it being a soundboard, it doesn't even come close to RnR '92! The main problem is the upper mids and highs are distorted, and therefore it can't be played loud unless you don't care about your speakers. As advertised, Geddy's bass does sound nice and does not suffer from the common rumble of most boots, but the vocals, cymbals, and most guitars are distorted. I also find the recording 'flat' and lacking punch or other forms of dynamics, probably due to the compressing of the recording. This causes the drums to be buried, except for the bass drum.

Another problem with this recording is the numerous fadeouts that exist both between songs and even in the middle of songs. Due to fadeouts, the beginning notes of The Trees and A Farewell to Kings are missing. Also, the end of Cygnus is faded out right in the middle of the climatic scream "Every Nerve is torn apaaaaaaaaaart." For some other mysterious reason, the 2nd half of Armageddon (Hemispheres) is also missing; it fades back in at the beginning of IV. Cygnus.

Therefore, if you are thinking of buying this boot, do not get it thinking it has perfect sound quality. I would rate the sound a B+/A-, where RnR'92 is an A+ and Pinkpop is an A and Electric Ladyland Studios is a B+. But DO get it if you want rare '78-'79 material on CD!!!!

I am not trying to say this boot is junk though; I just had my expectations set way too high, mostly due to the advertising of this show. I still recommend it due to it having 'most' of the two part epic Cygnus as well as Circumstances and A Farewell to Kings. The sound is still way better than Chicago 12/16/78 show (the only other show I know of that has these songs). As for the performance of the show, I think it is pretty good! Alex is experimenting a lot with different sound effects, and the acoustic guitar at the beginning of A Farewell to Kings is killer. Geddy shreds as always, but his vocals seem a bit strained at times. It's a bit too hard to hear the intricacies of what Neil is doing, so I can't comment. The only negative is between songs, Geddy seems pissed at the crowd for being packed up against the stage, and I wonder if Geddy was enjoying the show or he was worrying about the stage crashing down...

If I had to chose between this show and Pinkpop, I would be torn. An easy solution is to get both; they compliment eachother really well. It is just too bad Cygnus doesn't sound as good as Pinkpop...

    Other opinions?

    Jim

Sorry about the non-DT content, but until ACOS comes out, we won't have much to talk about. Anyone heard of a band called Iluvatar. I was wondering if anyone knows when they're comming out with a new album. Anyway, they're an awesome band that I think a lot of DT fans would like. Hello! Michael Bahr writes... > .. Speakin of Rush, does anyone notice the EXTREME parallels that > developed between Rush and DT where the first albums are concerned? > If I don't miss my mark, ACOS is DT's "2112". Here's hoping for > similar results.

That's hoping that DT will still be around in 20 years. Let's see here...

DT's first album had part of their band name in it (DREAM). Rush's first album had the band name in it (RUSH).

Rush had one band member leave after the first album (the drummer). DT had one band member leave after the first album (the vocalist).

The new Rush drummer was MUCH better than the old one. The new DT vocalist was MUCH better than the old one.

The new Rush drummer was Canadian. The new DT vocalist was Canadian.

The second DT and Rush albums had three-word titles with an unimportant (non-capitalized) word in the middle (BY and AND).

The second albums had their first attempt at a long epic story (By-Tor; and Metropolis).

Whoops! SOMETHING DOESN'T FIT! Rush's third album is not a very good album, considering the quality of other Rush albums. DT's third album is GREAT!

The third album has another epic attempt (Erotomania-Voices-Silent Man; and the Necromancer).

The fourth album has a long mega-epic as all of side one (2112 and ACOS).

Well, this is all I can think of. Tell me how I am doing.

Anyone heard of these guys? They played a show here at Atlanta's Wreck Room this past Saturday and surprise surprise, they covered "Pull Me Under." Not a bad job, although it struck me that it sounded like Charlie D. singing it (hmmm, IMAGES AND CHUCK?)

I had no idea they were scheduled (and neither did the Wreck Room; they never actually confirmed the show before driving 5 hours down), and when I saw the band name and the gobs of equipment they trucked in I said to myself "Aha.... I can make $5 easy by betting the bartender they're DT influenced." ka-ching!

They told me they'd had the name Metropolis since before I&W came out, so the coincidence is really weird. They DID get a kick out of my Ytsejam shirt, which -- also coincidentally -- I happened to be wearing that night. :)

I'll give their demo a listen and review it as soon as I can, err, take the time. <glyph of DT pun used> -- Once you're touched you stand alone | Paul W. Cashman To face the bitter fight | vanyel@crl.com Once I reached for love | <- Dream Theater And now I reach for life | "Learning to Live"

Because this is a typing mistake on their part. I ordered this and another 2CD Dream Theater title from them. When they gave a total of approx. $55.00, I was a bit confused. For 4 CDs that is cheap even for them. He then informed me of the mistake. BTW, besides the super cheap prices and low shipping, they get 'em to you QUICK. I called in my order around 2:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, and faxed my credit card info later that afternoon, and the CDs were in my mailbox on THURSDAY!! Highly recommended. Also ask if they have any other titles by DT, the list on the webpage is a bit old... -greg

I received my copy of Cygnus over the weekend and was compelled to comment on the quality of it. I'm grateful Mike took the time to give us a rare show from the 70's with some classic tracks on it, I feel, however, that the sound quality didn't live up to expectations. Cygnus' quality was compared to that of Rush 'N' Roulette '92 and Right of Passage. I strongly disagree with this comparison after hearing Mike's product. It's missing low bass (bass guitar, kick) and the highs (especially vocals) get distorted. There is also a lot of compression on the disc. I'm very disappointed with the fades both into and during the songs. Maybe I'm an anal perfectionist but I like hearing the first couple of notes of a song. Hemispheres actually fades out in the middle (while Geddy's singing, even!) losing about 1.5 - 2 minutes of the song. Granted, live recordings from the 70's, soundboard or not, can't compare to the quality of today's shows but expectations were high. Now I know Mike has many friends, I'm not trying to make enemies, rather just vocalizing a concern I feel is not completely unfounded. Get Cygnus for the novelty, not quality. Dave
