After reading all the stuff on the 'jam about this topic, I think I've
finally got it figured out, but I'm not sure. Now I have a question. In
the half-time part of Lie, there is a part where it sounds like MP is
playing sixteenth note triplets with the bass drum, the snare on 2 and 4
as usual, and then a cymbal in eighth notes. Listen to it and see what
you think. Would this be a polyrhythm?????

To all those of you who seem to have something against the discussions
related to music, or even the discussion (I wouldn't consider it arguing)
about polyrhythms, lighten up! It may not be what YOU want to read, but I
assure you there are plenty of us who find some of this stuff interesting.
If you don't want to read it, and don't want to learn something, then just
skip over the messages! Some of the stuff on this list is quite valuable,
and well worth the time spent reading it. I think the 'Jam's biggest
asset is the number of intelligent and knowledgable people that post on it.

I did know what polyrhythms were before, one can figure it out by looking
at the fact the word means "many rhythms", but there has been plenty of other
useful music-theory related stuff mentioned here ... I took a 5-6 years of
piano, and then basically gave it up (got tired of playing classical stuff,
and didn't feel like spending hours practicing). But I've been learning DT's
keyboard parts, and it helps to get a little lesson in music theory every
once in a while, now that I'm not taking any sort of training anymore.

PS - if anyone has a keyboard transcription (in MIDI format, if possible,
would be great) of the keyboard solo(s) in TTT, or even better, the whole
song, please e-mail me! I'd love to get these, I'm getting bored of playing
    Under A Glass Moon. :)

PPS - I saw Queensryche 8 days ago in Toronto, and they were spectacular. It's still sinking in. If you ever get a chance to see them, GO, you'll be
    spoiled for life! :)

Well, supposedly he messed it up a bit on the first couple of shows on the Awake tour. I wasn't into DT then (I'd only just heard of them then), so I haven't seen DT live yet. But he played it pretty much flawlessly on a video bootleg I have of the Pittsburgh 10/29/94 show. Being a keyboard player, I paid special attention to it ... of course, the sound quality isn't perfect, so I don't really know, but it sounded/looked right to me.

As for the solo on UAGM, he didn't learn it until recently, when they started doing the east coast and Europe shows (the past few months). I would assume so ... even *I* have that one down almost perfect. ;)

Well, it all depends. Most people will say that Kansas hit the apogee with the albums 'Leftoverture' and 'Point of Know Return', and I'd have to agree. (Listen to Magnum Opus on 'Leftoverture') Next would be 'Masque' or 'Song For America', as you already have 'Freaks of Nature'; all of which are excellent also. Their first and second albums (Kansas & SfA) are marked by lengthy songs which are very intricate. See, Kansas was doing what is now called 'prog-rock' back in the early 70's. It didn't get much of a market for them on radio, but built a cult following on those two albums alone. Sounds familiar to all of us DT fans...

After 'PoKR', they went for the 'hit song' and fell a few steps. With 'Freaks of Nature' they've returned to their roots :) and put out a great cd. While I agree entirely that DT has taken much influence from Kansas and notched it up a few, I'll say that Kansas has always been known for it's composition and tightness as a whole band. Take each instrument aside, they may not be the Vai's, Petrucci's, or Portnoy's, but as the sum of all their parts, they are among the best around and continue to be so.

DT's acknowledgement of Kansas as an influence is an honor, IMHO. They are a fantastic band.

    Hello fellow 'Jammers

Okay, everyone who went seems to be saying that the 8/3/95 show was one of the best sounding, and judging by the set-list (IMO) one of the more diversified (and longer) sets. Did anyone tape this stellar show? Please lemme know via e-mail or on the 'Jam if necessary. I have a bunch of Rush and a few DT and QR shows to trade. BTW, how long was the show? Looking at the set-list, I'm guessing well over 2 hours - am I correct??

I have seen the video for "Lie." As far as the look, it's pretty good. Nothing really out of the ordinary for rock videos, shots of the band playing in a warehouse (or something like that), ahots of the band standgin in a tunnel, shots of the band standing on a bridge, playing, singing, etc. The cool thing is some of the camera effects. Granted, they are standard fare, but they still look cool. Lots of quick shots (i.e. time-lapse) and some really quick zooms with sudden stops. It works for me. BTW, I taped it off the Headbangers Ball (what ever happened to...) when MP and JL were on. Not a long interview, but good nonetheless. On another note, somebody mentioned that Marillion's name is an abbreviated version of "The Silmarillion" by Tolkien. This piqued my interest, and I just so happened to find this book at a book fair for $1.00 hardback. I also picked up a couple Lord of the Rings books, among some others. I'm going back tomorrow to see if I can get some more stuff (hey, they're cheap). Anyway, just thought I'd let y'all know about my good find. Later. God bless.

Cheers to Mats Rydstrom for pointing out the differences between "Acoustic" guitar and "Classical" guitar. I didn't say anything when I saw the original post on the subject, but I think it's a very important point. JP doesn't play much on the classical, except the intro to Killing Hand, various parts of LtL, and the intro to A Vision from the Majesty days. He plays a lot on the standard acoustic restrung with nylon strings, but we know this is not true classical guitar. His technique of doubling an electric line with an acoustic was "inspired by" <ie: stolen from :P > Steve Howe of Yes, among others. I agree, this is a really great texture!

Saw echolyn for the third time tonight, and saw the third great show. They even debuted their new song! It's more aggressive than some of the other stuff--and really great! Plus, $5 to get in and $10 for a t-shirt. You can't beat that!

    True.

    > and no promoter wants to book them so thats it.

Even someone as cynical about the music business as me would have to say that this statement is flat out wrong. DT is one of those bands that has developed a VERY strong core following in a very short time. If they were only to hit major cities, they could easily sell out 2,000 - 3,000 seat venues whether they were touring behind a release or not. I'm not just blowing the DT horn because I love them - I really think it's true. Anyone else?

My call on Echolyn sounding like Level 42 was WAY off. One chorous in one song sounds EXACTLY like Level 42, the rest of the album doesn't sound anything like that. My, what a busy sound they have. I don't find the use of vocal harmonies as the lead voice very driving, but like anything, it'll take some getting used to. Hell, I didn't care for I&W when I first heard it, which only proves I have no brain.

Hey, I haven't heard much about the new Shadow Gallery here. Does anyone have it? Guys (and gals) on Usenet are beside themselves with glee.

How about the new SAGA? Concept album - Generation 13. Their Web site is cool, if you haven't checked it out: http://www.bonaire.com It's full of 16 bit sound samples, and the new album REALLY sounds like they've found their footing again. Anyone?

..for submissions for Metropolis Watch, issue 10! In case you've been a hole the past few months, too lazy to read previous postings about it, or otherwise absent, MW is the only U.S.-based Dream Theater fanzine. It has Mike Portnoy's sanction and the entire band gets copies of each issue. It's not *strictly* DT; I also cover some progressive and power metal underground bands. It generally features live/candid photos of DT, live reviews, demo reviews, news as up-to-date as I have it (for the benefit of readers who don't have online access), letters, and other assorted and sundry items.

I'm asking now if there's anyone who has anything they'd like to contribute; I would especially appreciate reviews of the shows in Providence and Hampton Bay (I think that's the place), or reviews of the EP from those of you that have gotten advance copies. Jeff Chew - I need that interview SOON - by this weekend - or I won't be able to print it. And that goes for all other submissions. I *will* be printing everything that had been sent to me for issue 9 as well.

For those of you not planning on contributing but are interested in copies, issue price is $1.25, $3.75 for a 3 month subscription in North America; anywhere that requires airmail, it's $2.00 for a single issue, $6.00 for a subscription (airmail price went up, so I had to bump up the rate a little again, unfortunately.) >After 'PoKR', they went for the 'hit song' and fell a few steps.

No, I'm sorry, this is simply not true. If you're referring to "Dust In The Wind," you should be aware of the fact that that song was THE LAST SONG that Kerry Livgren submitted to the band to get ON that album...and it almost never made it at all, had it not been for Kerry's wife hearing him practicing what he called "a finger picking exercise."

After PoKR came "Two For The Show." And following that, MONOLITH, one of their least popular albums ever - incidentally, probably one of my favorite Kansas albums.

And what Kansas was additionally known for was their "orchestrations." Literally, their music is very Orchestrated, in the manner in which an orchestral piece would be - it's just put into a rock context. For example, "No One Together." Next time you listen to it, ignore the vocals. Listen to the counter melody that runs throughout it.

I also don't know about "FoN" being a "great CD." My girlfriend bought it. The only song I've heard on it that I like, really, is the one Kerry Livgren wrote - "Cold Gray Morning." At that, it's not quite anything near his peak work. Walsh's voice sounds awful.

    Anyway...

The video was okay...it wasnt very imaginitive. It was basically them standing around or of them playing in a city setting. There were a lots of shots that look like they were taken from the hood of a car while it was driving around New York City (At least I think it was New York City). Most of these shots were sped up for the effect. There was no plot or storyline whatsoever. I know that this sounds negative but Ive never really been a fan of the DT videos ive seen, such as Take the Time, Pull Me Under, Another Day (IMO their best), and Lie. I havent seen The Silent Man, or Caught in a Web. And with the direction MTV has taken I dont think they are going to play them anytime soon. Once Headbangers Ball was cancelled that was it they will probably never play them along with a lot of other good videos.

    Hello Jammers,

I thought I would jump in on a few topics since I came back early from my vacation in Ithaca and I'm off of work today.

Drinking Age Laws ----------------- Most places in Maryland and the surrounding area are pretty anal about checking IDs for drinking, I have only been to two places that haven't (I see bands all of the time so this is a low percentage) checked IDs. As for a different age for minors, whoever said it is to pack in more guys, they are right since usually they will get a lot of guys in to see a club band and the promise of more women gets a lot of guys in who aren't drawn in for the band, siimilar to a Lady's Night but the under 21 women aren't allowed to drink. I agree that it is in bad taste to keep out guys for a show who are under 21 and let girls in, but you have to remember club owners want to make money and if they can get away with something they will try to. I know several bands who have been screwed by club owners so I tend to be of the opinion that club owners are shit-heads. (I do know a couple of exceptions) As for the higher charge for under-21 people when it comes to covers, it is a form of 3rd degree price discrimination (my economics degree coming in handy) and is legal and similar to what happens at the movies. People between 13 and 60 are charged more to go to films because in general they are willing to pay more to see a film, where under 13 and over 60 (ss discount) get a break on price to entice more of them to come to the movies. In the club, the under 21 people generally will want to see the band really badly, so they have to pay more cover (Price Discrimination (3rd degree)) for that reason and because the club owners won't make any money off of them for beer, alcohol, mixed drinks, etc.

This message got really long so I'll address the other topics later.

    Hello Jammers,

Marillion tour -------------- If anyone gets a chance to see these guys on their current Afraid of Sunlight tour check them out (they are touriing the east coast of the USA right now). I saw them in Philly and Washington DC and I was blown awayy by the musicianship and especially the antics and vocals of Steve Hogarth (lead singer/ keyboards). This man must have a theater background because he is the show, your eyes are constantly drawn to him. He jumps, screams, falls on the floor, grins with evil, looks off with vacant sorrow or feeling of love.

Prog-metal bands ---------------- I have information on many smaller prog-metal and prog-rock bands plus I will work on compilation tapes for people (e-mail me for details) I have a few running right now. If you get in touch with me to make you a tape please give me some idea what you currently enjoy musically so I can customize the tape. I am also thinking of putting together a prog-metal tape and selling it to the jammers for close to cost. I wouldn't really be making any money on the deal and these bands would get exposure. I'll post another message about that.

    Hello Jammers,

I was working on prog-metal tapes and one I made for a Jammer who was into Fate's, Rush, and Queensryche turned out really well, I didn't want to mail it to him. <grin> I was thinking that I could do a nice J-card for it and reproduce several copies to sell on Ytsejam and a.r-n-r.m.p. I'd like to get some feedback about this since several people on here are musicians and I don't like to shit on anyone's copyright, because I would be selling this, probably $5 a tape or something. I made free ones customized a while back and that had a good response but it took a lot out of me time and money-wise.

This is the set list I was considering:

Side A Band Song ------ ---- ---- 1. Tempo Tantrum The Mirror Never Lies 2. Mercury Rising Minute Man 3. Inferno Panels 4. Early Warning Wings of Steel 5. Lethal Programmed 6. Magellan Breaking These Circles 7. Black Jester Mirror's Song 8. Wicked Maraya Face In the Mirror 9. Savatage Rage

Side B Band Song ------ ---- ---- 1. Angra Carry On (w Intro) 2. Threshold Sunseeker 3. Visionary Strategy 4. Elan Firestorm 5. Auditory Imagery Speaking Your Mind 6. Ivanhoe Symbols of Time 7. Braindance Awareness 8. Shadow Gallery Deeper Than Life

Let me know any opinions you have on this project, I have seen other such projects die on newsgroups so I thought I would ask the Jammers first since you are usually cool about this stuff. Plus it is good exposure for these bands. Free promotion.

E-mail me at mbacko1@umbc.edu with any comments, I know a lot of people on here can vouch for my tape compilation and trading reliability, so I am being sincere with this.

Hellooo to all jammers! School's starting soon :( Soryy, didn't mean to bring everyone down. Anyway, I just like to put in my $.02 about Megadeth. I don't particularly care for their new album. I totally agree with Jeff Forte who said in the last post that RUST IN PEACE is definitely their best album! And to Dale R. Newberrry who posted in the last jam that Dave Mustaine doesn't fit into the ROCK STAR character. Well, that's because he's more of an asshole than any other rock star! I taped Megadeth's live debut of YOUTHANASIA on mtv's NIGHT OF THE LIVING MEGADETH program last Halloween. A direct quote from Mustaine when he introduced the song A TOUT LE MONDE: "I came real close to doing it (killing himself)...which is bad for other bands who wish they could ascend to our notority and heirarchy..."

or something like that. That seems kinda arrogant to me. And I disagree that Metallica was arrogant because James Hetfield and the boyz did it all in good fun. Mustaine seems totally serious when he shoots his shit. Final word: I think Marty Friedman should get out of Megadeth and do his own thing.

I think you guys are CRAZY that say that Youthanasia is a sell-out. I think it's one of their better efforts.

So far, so good, so what is completely idiodic!!! Into the Lungs of Hell: Set the world afire are really the only good songs on there. Jeff Young and the drummer couldn't play to save their life and the songs are poorly arranged. And DON'T get me started on "Liar"!!!

I think Youthanasia really shows how adept Mustaine is at creating catchy vocal melodies to put over very cool guitar lines. "Reckoning Day" and "Blood of Heroes" are excellent examples of this. Sometimes his verse melodies aren't all that great, but the choruses are ones that you find yourself repeating incessantly throughout the day.

For some DT content. SUXS that their done touring for Awake/ACOS!!!! Oh dammit!! Well, it is good that they'll have a full length out by next summer though!
