Umm...Considering Over Half of us are Musicians and happen to be
Seriously into this kinda stuff (Why the Hell do you think we like
DT???)...I suggest (And don't take this the wrong way...I'm, trying to
just be nice) you use the little thing in your E-mail reader called an
INBOX and delete any Messages that have a subject relating to technical
stuff! For those of you who 'Take The Time' to transcribe for our lame
ButtZ...MANY Thanks...keep up the Excellent work...cause I KNOW this is
some complex stuff...and By ALL Means...Keep It COMING!!!! The technical
stuff is what makes this Such a FUN list to be subscribed to!!!!! Take
care all...and I don't mean to Rag on ya whoever wrote this...but
seriously if we didn't have technical talk...this list would be EXTREMELY
Dead right now (DT Groupie Crap REALLY doesn't appeal to me...sorry).
Take care all!!! (Hehe HuGZ Ta Jen!!!) :)

    >three months or anything!

I wasnt surprised to hear of this policy because I had heard about some
other clubs doing it arund the Long Island area. Actually if this makes you
feel any better about you missing them, I heard they sounded horrible from a
friend who went. She said the place was overcrowded and hot. She left after
forty-five minutes and sat in the parking lot and waited for her friends to
come out. I hope someone who went to the show can tell me she was wrong.
I know DT has a habit of playing too loud so I could see them sounding
terrible. I wish i could have gone, but that damn "sexist admission policy".

On another note, does anyone out there have the lyrics to Tears...Im
dying to get them. I just bought 2112 the other day and found out that the
lyrics arent in the album. If you could either post them or send them to me
    personally Id really appreciate it.

Just so you know, I think "Live At The Whiskey" is probably Kansas's worst
album, followed immediately by "Freaks Of Nature."

Go pick up something decent by them:

Kansas, Song For America, Masque, Monolith, Leftoverture & Point of Know
    Return.

And if you want to hear a GOOD live Kansas album, go pick up "Two For The
    Show."

    >Their music is similar except DT has taken it to a higher
    >plateau and heavier and better

Uh...well, I don't honestly think you've heard enough Kansas to make that
statement. Heavier, yes. But heavier doesn't always make it better. And
besides, the one thing that Kansas did that no band did as well, you probably
didn't notice, because of the albums you heard...since Kerry Livgren, the
BRAINS of the operation, wasn't in the band post '84.

If the "special products" Kansas album you refer to is "Carry On," go check
out some of that material's original albums. You can't get "Drastic Measures"
or "Vinyl Confessions" on CD, and at the rate they're going, you probably
    never will.

Not that this'll matter to you, Mr. Daugherty, but, I spoke to Mike P. about
the Live At The Whiskey CD right after he picked it up. I told him, "Man, it
sucks." Mike says, "Don't tell me that!"

Next show (at the TLA), I ran into him again. He said, "You were right about
the LATW CD...the other one was better."

    Anyway,

           Hey all you Dreamers!

I called my local radio station today and found out something
very disturbing! I requested them to play DREAM THEATER...and the DJ
was very honest with me and told me she is not sure they even have Dream
Theater in the studio(station). They did at one time..and played DT
    quite a bit...but since "national statistics"(etc..etc..)(and marketing)
Dream Theater is not in demand as many other "new" bands or
records..etc.. They might play late night when the DJ has more
"freedom", but never hear them play during the day. What a shame...it
all comes down to TARGET MARKETING...music on demand. It ALL comes

P.S. oh..by the way..the radio station Im talking about it 98.9 The Rock
Kansas City. there phone number is:913-576-7989studio/ or
    main number:913-384-9900.

    >>And also, I've recently realized how HARD it is to make someone listen
    >>to DT. There's a certain type of personality that goes with listening to
    >>DT. 90% of all DT listeners I know fit into this personality: They are either
    >>artistic (painters, drawers, etc..), a musician, enjoys fantasy (rpg type)
    >>novels and etc, or all of the above... Your everyday football jock,
    >>metalhead, cheerleader, brainiac, type people don't appreciate it as much.
    >>That's why when a song like.."Silent Man" or "PMU" come on the radio, more
    >>people channel surf than enjoy! Just my $.02

Gotta throw my 0.02 in here...

I'm sure we'd all love to hold the opinion that James expressed above ...
i.e. NOT to hear DT on the radio and to keep the music to ourselves...but
the reality is that DT is in the music BUSINESS, and that is the key word
right there. Being a former sound engineer in the business myself, I've
seen a lot scenarios all pointing to one thing -- the all-mighty DOLLAR.
Yes, I know, hard to believe, but it's true. Record companies *honestly*
do not care how good or bad a band is, as long as it's making them money.
As soon as the band becomes a hassle, they're bye-bye.

So, do I want to hear DT on the radio? Well, it would be nice if they
had a lucrative financial income from such a vehicle (and MTV, that would
be nice) to support their longevity in this world, but one can only hope
without Radio or MTV that DT will be *lucky* emough to survive without
their support. Only a few bands, like the Grateful Dead, have managed to
    do this.

To me, if you were all FAITHFUL DT fans, you'd be calling your radio
stations and sending MTV E-mail __demanding__ DT to be played!!! To me,
spend a little less time chatting on ytsejam and more time bugging the
industry people ... that is where I think y'all could make a difference.

    Happy rails, ....

One more thing: Alot of DT songs have samples and sound clips from
movies and whatnot, especially the stuff written by Moore. Does the
band have to receive permission to do that? (note: I didn't see, for
example, A Room with a View credited on Awake...)

I just read the new Ytsejam, and there was something in there about 90%
of all DT listeners being the artistic, musicical, fantasy type. Well, I
    totally agree.
Also, I wanted to give you this input:
Have you also noticed that when it comes bands like DT or Rush, people
are either absolute fanatics or can't stand them? Take me for example, I'm
driving 300 miles to see DT in Providence! A lot of my friends just dance
around to hip hop and tell me that I'm nuts. I'm sure a lot of DT fans have
experienced this. It's like listening to these bands takes your mind and
creative abilites to a new level.
Also, I wanted to know If the members of DT or other progressive bands
lean toward this "Fantasy Dreamer" type personality. Probably. I guess that
bands like QR,DT,Rush, etc. are out there on the edge, they're the REAL
"Alternative" to the crap that gets played on the radio these days.
      Anyways, just my 2 pesos!

P.S. I just finished listening to Megadeth's new album. How do fellow
jammers consider them? I mean do they fit into ,"Progressive Metal"?

To the guy who asked about Kansas and their influence on DT and their albums:
    (Daugherty, I think?)

Yeah, no kidding about the influence of Kansas on DT. In fact, I
just listened to When Dream and Day Unite for the first time the other
night (despite having owned I&W and Awake for quite some time now), and I
could not believe how much more obvious DT's roots were on this album
than in their later ones. It was obvious that they were aiming at Rush
and Kansas quite a bit. Very interesting. I like Charlie's voice,
too-- kind of like Geddy Lee mixed with Steve Perry (minus a good deal of
    talent).
Anyway, to get off that tangent, I cannot agree with your statement
that DT has taken its Kansas prog-style "to a higher plane" or whatever
it was you said. I don't own many Kansas albums, but from what I've
heard, they possess an intensity that DT often lacks. Their music,
though complex, is not as complicated or out there as DT's, and I think it
is more powerful and moving than DT's.
As for albums, if you like Live at the Whiskey, you'll probably love
Point of Know Return and Leftoverture (these are the three Kansas albums
that I own). Most of the songs on Whiskey are from these two albums, and
it's terriffic to hear them with different instrumentation, studio
quality, and a young Steve Walsh with a clear voice. And the other
songs, well, they're fabulous--What's On My Mind, Sparks of the Tempest,
The Spider, etc. are awesome. You also get to hear Robby Steinhardt on
some songs, a treat you miss on Whiskey. The really amazing part,
though,is that these two albums, which contain music better than 99.9% of
other albums, were mad by Kansas in consecutive years! That still blows
    me away.

    Hey all,
I just had to tell you that I've finally had a success with Dream
Theater conversion. After months of trying to get my closed minded
friends in Idaho (through the mail, since I live in Colorado) to listen
to them, with no luck, I created a new DT fan.
My mother (age: 48) has been visiting me for a couple of weeks,
and I took this time (inbetween trips to the Denver Museum of Art,
etc...) to saturate her mind with DT. She loves them. After watching
the Live In Tokyo video and listening to every album and bootleg that I
own she decided she had to have them. The day before she left we went
out to our friendly local CD shop and she purchased I&W and Awake. Waa
hoo! I showed her my transcription books for the music (she's an artist,
not a musician, but I talk about music enough that she gets it) so she
could see how proficient the gods are at what they do. She loved it all.
Well, that's all I have to say for now. Be excellent to each other!
    Bracken

P.S. Does anyone have a good copy of Queensryche's final show on this
tour on audio AND/OR video? I'm VERY interested.

Yeah, I have a couple of their CDs (they are kinda hard to find)... very
interesting stuff, kind of like U2 (circa "Boy" or "War")... definately
worth checking out... don't know what happened to them though...

If you are looking for them to go along with Dream Theater's version
from the Ronnie Scott's gig then you can get a copy of the DT Song
Book (I am pretty sure the lyrics are identical with the Rush
         version).

The "Unofficial" Dream Theater Song Book is available via the
    following methods:

    FTP: www.indirect.com/www/mkizer/dt_sb10.txt

If you can't get a copy using the above methods, send me an
email and I'll send you a copy directly.

Does anyone know wether derek can do Kevin's solo on TTT (on shows) -
does he do it well enough? Also Can he do Kev's solo on Under a Glass
    Moon?

If anyone has a bootleg containing derek's solos for either of the
songs - I would be so happy to check it out - cause I don't have
    any with derek actually.

Oh about the polyrhythms - The guys with the parrot thing was very
funny. And the guy with the "We don't want that in our Jam" was qute,
but the polyrhythms are generally very interesting - they symbolizes
the spirit of progressivness or complexity - and are very compeling
    withing the songs...

    See ya all.

    POLYRHYTHM:
The simultaneous use of conflicting rhythms and accents, often as a result of
combining different meters. Simpler types, such as the use of 6/8 against
3/4, are usually called cross rhythm, while the term polyrhythm is used for
the bold rhythmic clashes often encountered in 20th-century music. Strongly
syncopated passages, such as occur in jazz, also produce a polyrhythmic
    effect.

The above passage is from the Harvard Brief Dictionary of Music.

They (discussion group) are OK in definition, but there is a lot of "phat" in
    some of their stuff. :-)

    Power to the beat!

    Live In Tokyo
     -----------

Two weeks ago now, I celebrated getting a new cd player by purchasing Live
In Tokyo (yes, I know it's a video; but when the logic, however twisted,
involves getting new DT, I don't argue.) Watching it has renewed my awe of
the band, although I now urgently _need_ to see them live.

I had never seen the videos before: am I to understand there are people
here who actually got into DT because of these vids? The edits in the songs
are _painful_, and if I hadn't known the "real" versions, I would have
written DT off as a band that couldn't make a song flow together. And, of
course, the "wolfman" in PMU - ???

Can someone tell me what the Japanese autograph-hunter is _really_ saying?
While I was laughing loudly at Kevin's translation, some friends thought he
was serious. I imagine it's just "greatest band in the world" fan babble,
but I would still like to know.

    Uncovered
     -------

I've been listening to a tape of the Ronnie Scott's gig (thanks, Mike!) and
am quite impressed. The setlist is well-chosen (okay, there's a couple
songs I would argue against, but...) It's the first I've heard Derek play,
and he sounds good. My only anxiety now about him replacing Kevin is the
samples - Kevin has a way of making them fit and become an integral part of
the song. I know some of you hated the samples, but if they disappear on
the next album, I for one will miss them.

Overall, I would have (should have?) killed to be at that show.

Yes! Another 90% I don't fit into! Unless you can categorize a 26yr old
netadmin for an HIV research group w/ an Electrical Engineering degree who
reads Dick, Ellison, Clancy, and Barker and hasn't touched his guitar in 3
years (and wasn't very good at it anyway.)

I think the only real categorization for DT fans is people who know what
they like (and don't like) when they hear it, no matter what others say.
And aren't afraid to let their friends know about it :^)

Unfortunately, radio has become a one-way medium - marketers tell you what
to listen to. (I know there are djs out there who fight this, some on this
list - I applaud you) While seeing DT hit big on the charts would be
gratifying, I am happy to support them (and drum up additional support)
enough to keep the good stuff coming. Symbiosis can be cool.

Sorry for the length, but I just spent the last two days reconfirming why I
hate Microsoft, and needed a break.

                     Tears
                        -----
                   Lyrics by Geddy Lee

    All of the seasons
    And all of the days
    All of the reasons
    Why I've felt this way
    So long
    So long

    Then lost in that feeling
    I looked in your eyes
    I noticed emotion
    And that you had cried
    For me
    I can see

    What would touch me deeper
    Tears that fall from eyes
    That only cry?
    Would it touch you deeper
Than tears that fall from eyes
    That know why?

    A lifetime of questions
    Tears on your cheek
    I tasted the answers
    And my body was weak
    For you
    The truth

    Z.

Please stop all the talk about the intro to The Mirror. The whole thing
could be phrased in a million different time signatures. It doesn't need
to be, but it you want to make up all kinds of b.s. about fictitional
time signatures in the intro to a song in a thesis or something, go right
ahead! Please stop posting your theories! It has become quite tiresome!
    Thank you! :)

Bob Holder's post about Queensryche reminded me - I saw them in Camden, NJ
on July 19 and they were awesome. I managed to get backstage for the
pre-show Meet & Greet which was even better! :) I've been backstage at
other shows before, but this was the first time the whole band showed up,
so I'm now the proud owner of a 5-autograph Promised Land CD poster
    thing-y. Hoo-ray for me. :P
Despite the fact that the room we were in was rather small and very
hectic, all the guys were really cool and went out of their way to thank
    everybody for being there.
Jason Giles, you might like to know that Michael Wilton took a good look
at my Ytsejam t-shirt and said "Cool!". Also, I met about 8 people at the
show with DT shirts, half of whom asked me where I got mine.

There was a thread a ways back about best DT moments - I have a worst DT
moment (hard to imagine!) ... I had just gotten I&W when I went to see them
at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly (I was not familiar with the band at all
    in
'93). There's a Chili's restaurant a few doors down where I went to meet my
friends, and as we were sitting there suckin' down a cold one, I happened to
notice an Asian American fellow sitting with some other guy in a booth
    nearby.
Dadgum if it wasn't Myung and LaBrie! But did I go up and talk to them?
Nooooooo! Oh, they were chatting about something and I didn't want to
interrupt and seem like a jerk ... then they left. DOOOHHH!! 8=(
Let that be a lesson to all of you - CARPE DIEM!

Hey Al Balkiewicz - how ya doin'??
