Sorry, Mike, just sorta got used to the old title......

A late chime-in on the short-lived "What Iron Maiden tune would be best
done by DT" thread---I would agree on Infinite Dreams, but only if
Charlie Dominici returned to handle the vocals....he'd handle the
    syncopated lyric delivery better

I've said it before, and as MR. Buckley (40+ shows deserves a MR :)
pointed out Only a Matter of Time might not go as well in James' vocal
style--I'd say same goes for Infinite Dreams

Also, on the matter of Subcon, I'm with Aviad--I'd love to get a dubbed
copy, if anybody out there would be so kind, e-mail me at ahtrap@umich.edu

    Hey Jammers,
Does anyone know when Dream Theater will be playing up here in
Canada? If so, what are the the closest places to Nova Scotia? I
presume they would never consider playing here in Halifax (hell we
haven't had a descent concert here since Aerosmith 2 years ago and the
Tragically Hip last winter...I AM STARVED FOR ENTERTAINMENT!...musically
that is). Anyhow, if anyone knows of any Canadian tour dates could they
please post them (or send them directly to me if you prefer). Thanks.

The following appeared in Ytsejam #906:

    >Let me preface this by saying that I love MP's drumming, but from what I
    have
heard of his solos, I think Mike really lacks in this area. Now, the solos I
have heard are not to recent. The latest is from like '93 or so. But I
don't think Mike is really a good soloist.<
    [...]
    >Now some people might like this, but as most drummers would agree, that is
not what a solo really should be(although it is a helluva lot better than
some guy behind a drumset spinning through the air). Maybe Mike has
developed as a soloist since then and if he has I hope someone will correct
me, but if not, then I am not really looking
forward to hearing anymore of his solos till he does.<

My hubby Keith drums, and, as far as he's concerned, Mike (well, tied with
Mark Zonder) is simply the best drummer in his eyes (yes, Neil Peart was
previously his drum god, but Neil was de-throned by LtL and "Metropolis"
<g>), but solos are something else entirely. Keith is quite the critical
listener when it comes to fellow drummers, believe me! :)

Coming from directly from Keith: What is a drum soloist? He says that he's
heard many drum solos, but the best drumming comes from composed pieces. He
said, to him, the "sole purpose of a drum solo is to give the drummer an
    erection." <g>

He added that what he likes best about Mike is that he's "really out there"
in his playing yet he always ends up right where he should be, timewise.

Isn't the simplest way of defining polyrhythm the superimposition of two contrasting meters <namely: duple and triple>? Someone posted the duple/triple thing in the last ytsejam and I just sat upright in my chair and said, "Yes!"

I think the vast majority of people are confusing syncopation and mixed meters with polyrhythm. The beginning of TTT could be called polyrhythmic, because the guitar and drums are constantly shifting from 4/4 to 5/4 to 6/4 to 3/4 while the bass plays in 4/4. <Well, it's not transcribed as 4/4, but it is still played in a 4/4 groove or feel.> The Mirror, on the other hand, is not polyrhythmic. This is evident in the unison parts in the instuments, and the fact that all the instrumental parts easily conform to the meter signatures chosen. The transcription in the tab book is ok, but I wouldn't have used 9/16 time in that instance.

Last Jam, somebody mentioned how the intro for TTT is Morse Code for SOS. Well, I checked it out, and it certainly sounds like it could be. Granted, this may not have been intentional, but, then again, it may have. I have a novice Ham radio license (my dad's been into it for many years - he's the expert in the family), so I do know a bit of Morse Code. Intersting... . God bless. See you in a few.

IMO, moshing is not violence. Music has never ispired violence in me, but it has inspired anger. When I hear a song about injustice (for example) I do get angry, but not violent.

Phil also wrote: "I believe that anyone who feels the need to mosh in order to hurt someone (this is anyone that moshes, except those that are just doing it cause everyone else is and they feel like bouncing around at a concert) is an idiot."

When I mosh, I do so because the music I listen to makes me want to move. I have never hurt anybody while moshing - and I am not an idiot! "I don't care if I have offended anyone on the 'jam with that statement because I know that I am right and I really don't care what anyone has to say in defense. Moshing=Unnecessary Violence."

This is a joke, right? So much for the openminded-ness of Ytsejammers! It was postings like this one that made me unsubscribe to the Live mailing list. Phil, you ought to think this one through once more. If 5 people go to a concert just to hurt others, does that make all moshers idiots? I think not!!!!

<---- Begin Included Message ----> Hey all you Dreamers!

I called my local radio station today and found out something very disturbing! I requested them to play DREAM THEATER...and the DJ was very honest with me and told me she is not sure they even have Dream Theater in the studio(station). They did at one time..and played DT quite a bit...but since "national statistics"(etc..etc..)(and marketing) Dream Theater is not in demand as many other "new" bands or records..etc.. They might play late night when the DJ has more "freedom", but never hear them play during the day. What a shame...it all comes down to TARGET MARKETING...music on demand. It ALL comes

P.S. oh..by the way..the radio station Im talking about it 98.9 The Rock Kansas City. there phone number is:913-576-7989studio/ or main number:913-384-9900. ---- End Included Message ---->

I don't know...there's something I like about not hearing DT on the radio, it makes it...well so much more meaningful. While some people are out ruining there ears with crap bands like Offspring, Green Day, and other dime a dozen bands, I know I have DT sitting in my CD player to be played. And also, I've recently realized how HARD it is to make someone listen to DT. There's a certain type of personality that goes with listening to DT. 90% of all DT listeners I know fit into this personality: They are either artistic (painters, drawers, etc..), a musician, enjoys fantasy (rpg type) novels and etc, or all of the above... Your everyday football jock, metalhead, cheerleader, brainiac, type people don't appreciate it as much. That's why when a song like.."Silent Man" or "PMU" come on the radio, more people channel surf than enjoy! Just my $.02 James (BTW 98.9 NEVER plays DT!! They played Caught in a Web ONCE! (like right before the concert at memorial hall) and PMU like a couple of years ago! Well at least they play plenty of Rush!)

A pretty interesting concept album but my least favorite of his three solo albums. "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" is my favorite. That album describes a man's dreams (and nightmares), creating a bizzare, dark atmosphere. Great stuff, though it took me a while to get into it. I'm not sure which Pink Floyd album you're referring to. The Wall has a voice at the beginning and end of the album (along with the same music) which creates a full circle (in a similar manner to James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" -- an author who Kevin Moore enjoys (ie. DT content! ;-)).

An easier way to state the time signatures for the Mirror is to think about it as follows:

    (rake) 2/2 (x2) 3/2 12/8 (x4) 2/2 (x15) 9/8 4/4 (x32) (4/4 because of the double time feel) 7/8 2/2 12/8 (first verse, etc.)

I just wanted to say that I think there is a fine line between polyrhythms and syncopations (although someone will definitely disagree with me). A polyrhythm is more than one rhythm played at the same time and a syncopation is displacing the strong beat. It would be interesting if we could get the definitive answer on it. I'm amazed at how many people think they have the definitive answer and state so. Like the intro to The Mirror or someone who said that he didn't think the bar of 2/4 and bar of 9/16 was needed (the only other choice is 17/16 which would be more confusing). I'd love to see someone say I think because it seems that the ones who don't are usually wrong.

In other news, I'm looking forward to hearing Echylon in Providence (as well as DT of course ;).

    Fellow musicians on the Jam....

Poly-rythmn theory is really simple to understand!! There is no need to be able to count or understand the L-R L-R thing. Remember " Polly want a cracker??" Well then.....

Polyrythmn is simply using 2 Parrots as drum sticks....the thinner the bird, the better. Hold them slightly on the side to avoid drumhead damage caused by beaks. Let them have plenty of water after every 10 minutes of playing. Give them potty breaks often. Store them upright when not using. Avoid cymbals altogether...that would be cruel. Always wear drummer's gloves to avoid losing your grip. Parrots do like to fly, they do NOT like to be launched.

Start out with a couple of slower songs... they need to build up tempo gradually. Avoid improvising...they don't like to "wing it". Use a regular bass drum pedal with beater. Avoid trying to do drumstick tricks...never spin, or "flip the bird", they don't like it. If you own a cat please use only conventional drumsticks....don't ask :(

I hope this finally clears things up for you people.

    Warren in Oregon

Right. The ending morse code on the album is a verse that Roger took out for fear of being sued. It was a poke at Sylvester Stallone and Rambo movies. At the live shows he used the verse, but on the KAOS album it's only in Morse Code.

I just heard some disturbing news:

My Store Manager at Musicland got off the phone with someone from East/West Records and she said that the release date For the ACoS EP won't be untill October 10 or so.

Can anyone confirm this??? I don't want to wait any longer!

Echolyn will be playing with Dream Theater, for the next show in Providence. Just thought people would like to know that. If anyone wants to get one the echolyn mailing list "The Wiblet" drop me an e-mail, and I give you the address (I'd give it to you now but I don't have it handy).

On the subject of Polyrhythms, I'd love to rip John Nguyen apart but I don't know enough about 'em. *** FUCK YA, BEEAAATCH! John ***

    Sorry about the old content but, it is my first day back to work since the 27th (you know, holidays and all) and it is happy :) and sad :( The date - Thursday, July 27/95. The place - Molson Amphitheater in Toronto. The event - QUEENSRYCHE. I ventured to this event with some friends of mine, only to meet up with fellow jammers Paul (whom was sporting his ytsejam t-shirt) and Dan. We chatted for a while (mostly during TON) about this, that and pretty well everything and then went our separate ways. I saw Queensryche at Darien Lake on July 14 so I knew what to expect right? WRONG!!!! We did not find out until the end of the show that this was the last night of their tour, glad to be there, sad to see it end. A fair amount of the show was the same, but their were some changes. I AM I seen a number of more PRESS people on stage. Promised Land had more people (most of their crew) on stage including a couple of bar fights with broken glass and the whole nine yards. The nurse was a stage hand w/wig and nurses outfit on. The entire show just seemed to have more UUUUUMPH. Their encore was two songs, the same as before, and that was it. After the show, they were throwing out guitar picks by the handful. {===========================================================================} {"Come inside, the show's about to start | "You need this, } { Guaranteed to blow your head apart | You worthless } { Rest assured you'll get your money's worth | Piece of Shit" } { The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth." | As seen on the journey to} { KARN EVIL 9, 1st Impression - Part 2, ELP | the Promised Land } {---------------------------------------------------------------------------} { See Ya, Bob "Look out for number one" - Calvin } {===========================================================================}

We weren't, but that's o.k. Has anyone here ever heard of The Icicle Works? Alternative-ish, big hit about ten years ago call Whisper to a Scream. Anyway, I was looking for something old to listen to, and I happened upon one of their albums that I have. Neil Peart used to freak over their drummer, especially given that their first album contains INSANE drumming and Chris Sharrock was only 18 when they recorded it. REALLY phenominal if you can find any of it. Not at all DT, but imagine a harder driving U2 or something like that.

And again, can anyone confirm that the EP will NOT contain EVE and To Live Forever? I'm under the impression that this is the case. Bummer.

Mike Patrick mpatrick@netusa1.net Still searching for that elusive corner of the Net where civility is all the rage and the content is substantive. Ah, screw it. Who am I kidding?
