    James LaBrie said that the "A Change Of Seasons" EP will be released on
    September 26. He also said that this is the last show for the Awake tour,
    and they will be back with a full album and tour in the summer of 96.
    Apparently, they will not be touring in support of the new EP because he
    wished everybody a "Merry Christmas" and a "Happy New Year".

    I almost didn't go to the show - that would've been a big mistake.

    I usually consider the term 'classical guitar' as another way of saying
    nylon-stringed acoustic guitar (the kind of guitar used in classical
    music) as opposed to steel (or whatever they use) stringed acoustic
    guitars, which are referred to as just acoustic guitars. (can someone
    point out the difference with the term Western Guitar?)

    With this in mind, JP uses his classical guitar on these occasions:

    * the intro to The Killing Hand (3 or more overdubs)
    * the solo in The Silent Man

    On the other hand he uses his 'normal' acoustic guitar on these:

    * the intro to Pull Me Under
    * Another Day
    * Surrounded (together w/ the electric on the major-scale melody)
    * Learning To Live, both the 'break' itself and a doubling of one of the
      electric guitar melodies.
    * the chords/rhythm guitar on The Silent Man
    * somewhere in The Mirror (the middle part)

    and I think I've also heard some acoustic guitar in one of the other
    songs on Awake. Please give more examples where you hear acoustic
    guitars!

    I think the most interesting ones are the coupling of the electric
    melody-lines on Surrounded and LTL, they create a very interesting
    effect. The somewhat distorted but even electric tone together with the
    snapping and attack of the acoustic...beautiful!

    Well, the 8/3 Providence show was one of the best I've seen DT play in a while, and probably the best they have sounded on this tour (but not my favorite set list, I liked the first Providence show on 10/20/94 better).

    Okay, two comments:

    First, speaking as a "former" musician, and and a person who knows a few popular musicians, I can say that musicians are people too, who just happen to have jobs playing music. I know, I know, you all know this, but consider that everyone likes to have their own private time (perhaps me more than others); how thrilled would you be if every time you turned around, every time you were in public, people were coming up to you asking/talking to you about your job? I'd go nuts. I know this probably won't make me the most popular guy on the 'Jam, but I applaud the gentleman who was at Chili's and just simply left J. Myung and J. LaBrie to their conversation. As much as they may enjoy what they do, everyone values anonymity at times. Second comment: regarding the "sorts that listen to DT", I just thought it was interesting how few females listen to it. Not just YTSEJAM subscribers, but everywhere. I know ONE (uno, un) female that likes DT, and even then she doesn't consider them to be highly skilled, technical musicians...she thnks they're just a rockin' kind of a band. I have yet to meet a female who has a deep appreciation for what DT has brought to the world of music (excepting the couple who are on the 'Jam, of course. Pardon me, ladies). Innyhoo, just a thought.

    Just figured something out about 5 minutes ago, this will of course be old news to most of you but I would also like to know which Rush-fans didn't know this already:

    The melody-line Alex plays at the end of 2112:Overture is in fact the main theme from 1812 by Tschaikovskij! These two 'number-named' symphonies ties together this way, or are there even more borrowed riffs?

    Sorry 'bout the redundant information but this was really a heavy thing for me and I just had to share it with someone!

    i would love to see this show...they're coming to the gorge in George, WA. but the tix (the good ones) are like $90! plus i'd have to drive 6 hours to get there, and i should be studying for exams :)

    1. The concept piece, or "mini-opera" that Townshend wrote between Tommy and Quadrophenia is called "A Quick One While He's Away" I believe, and while it was never released except split up on various albums, the new rerelease of Live at Leeds has over 2x as much music, among the extras is none other than this, as a concept piece as it was written. Uh, I think...

    2. Easy one. Brian May was pusuing a PhD in Physics, and has a Masters in the subject. Incedentally here are the potential careers of the other members of Queen: Freddie Mercury was an art student, bassist John Deacon was studying electronics, and drummer Roger Taylor was a pre-Dentistry student at the time of the formation of Queen.

    First off, I just wanted to say that I've seen a number of threads that bored me, and bugged me, etc., but I quickly realized that one merely has to put up with it. For those irritated enough at the mirror thread to say so, the only realistic reactions to your post is A. it will be ignored or B. it will be argued. So why bother? Personally the mirror thread has been of the greater interest in the last 10 jams.

    At any rate, I have just returned from Beinn Breagh, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and am catching up. . .

    It seems that Mirror could even be simplified to this: A: (following the bass)

    I have arrived to the conclusion that very few pianists would be able to pick up the entirety of Wait for Sleep, and that most of those few would have to be composers. To begin with, it is impossible to play all at one time, one must pre-record at least two harmony lines, in addition to the fact that there are usually two to three melodies going on simultaneously. For performance, I would say it probably ranks up with the advanced classical pianist teenager repertoire in terms of difficulty. I would love to try, if Kevin would deign to teach me!!

    Also, Aufersteh'n or the 'Resurrection' Symphony is pure perfection by Mahler. It is one of the few pieces that I prefer over Dream Theater, and the only piece I would sell my soul to see.

    My father takes a slight taste in DT at 51, but only because of its complexity. I'm sure of it.

    Lastly, I think the 18 or over rule is legal. In fact I think 18 is the legal age requirement for bartending.

    Hi!

    I don't agree with this age discrimination thing which is quite common here in Sweden. Often the clubs are 21+ and often there are different limits for men/women. One good thing to come out in recent years is that whenever there's a band playing the club usually set the limit to 18 instead of 21, 18 is the limit for drinking alcohol in Sweden. Still a lot of people don't get in. I remember when british band 'The Happy Mondays' played at a 21+ club here some years ago. The place was about half-full and by that time the band was very popular here. Most people simply couldn't get in. The same happened to Morbid Angel a couple of years ago. I'd wish that clubs here adapt the same policy as some clubs abroad, something around the wrist to signal that the person may not buy alcohol.

    Of course there are cases when I won't allow these rules to take effect, when DT is playing! Their two first shows here were in 20+ bars and by that time I was 18 resp 19 years old, I got through, so did my brother (he was 16), I don't know how but he managed to fool the guards.

    When we went to see Anglagard, Landberk, Anekdoten at a trendy 20+ bar some years ago we had to hassle with the guards for half an hour. They finally said: 'Ok, you don't seem to be here to pick up chicks and drink alcohol, you seem to be here for the music, hmmm....ok, get in, don't get anywhere near the bar and do NOT come back til you're 20!!!' Well, we missed the first Anglagard song but we DID get in!

    Oh, BTW, my Mum likes some rock/metal, she has to since there's always music playing at home ;-) She sings along to PMU, Silent Lucidity, old Kiss, Led Zep, Deep Purple etc. My dad's another story though :-)

    Oh, BTW BTW, I'm 21, I've been a CS student for one year but I don't know for how much longer. It really sucks right now! Maybe I should pay a little more attention to my BASS so that one day I can become a worshipped God like Myung, Geddy, Claypool.....nah, never mind :*)

    On the Megadeth topic that was mentioned recently, I happen to like their newer stuff pretty well (no, I don't really consider it prog in theleast bit). The tune on the latest album, "A Tout Le Monde" means a lot to me. It's an anti-suicide song, and really helped me get through a rough time this summer when an old friend of mine committed suicide. Also, I don't think they have "sold out." An artist changes. If Megadeth (or any other artist) continued to put out the same stuff just to cater to their old fans (or any other said group of people), that would be selling out. I think the whole "sell-out" thing is more of a matter of attitude than musical style. A good example would be Metallica. I saw their Woodstock performance, and they really came off, for me, to be extremely arrogant and totally into the "rock star" sttitude. That, for me, is selling out. Granted, a band may sound more commercial/mainstream on a particular album (i.e. King's X's Dogman - great album, BTW), but that definitely does NOT make them a sell-out. This is one of the things I totally dig about DT. They have great attitudes, and are not static, musically speaking, or any other way for that matter, and therefore, they are not boring. Each album (that I've heard - haven't heard all of WDADU yet...) is different. I think that the deal with Megadeth is that Youthanasia is simply where they're at artistically. That's all. I don't think money rules Mr. Mustaine's mind either. I don't know the guy personally, so I can't make a real judgment about his character, but he doesn't come off to me as being into the rock star thing as much as many other bands. I just saw them last night in St. Louis (were any of y'all there? Let me know), and they were the only band there really worth anything (Fear Factory, Korn, and Flotsam & Jetsam opened, and sucked).     Well saw the show in Providence. Not bad. Show number 13 for me so I've seen better ones. Change of Seasons was great. The new parts are really cool. This was the LAST show of the tour. ^The album is dead. Radio isnt playing it and no promoter wants to book them so thats it. Not even a full year of touring. James said " A change of Seasons will be out Sept 26th. And that the new album, will be out summer of 96 so....thats it.

    Oh i saw Marillion last night. Unreal show. Go see them if their in your area!!

    Hey everyone this is my first time on. I'm glad to be a part of a truly elite group of people. DT is got to be one of the greatest bands to come around. I was wondering if anyone has heard of any tour dates for Florida. Also I'm a guitar player ( I have a band in Merritt Island Florida called "Slacker". We're a very heavy groove type music band.     Yeah, the new album does suck. They changed thier style for Countdown to Extinction and I though it wasnt that great but it was listenable. The new album is just bad...I couldnt even listen to the whole thing. If you want to check out a good Megadteh albume you should check out Rust in Peace...my personal favorite.

    Hi all

    I have recently decided to try and compile a list of the various set lists that Dream Theater has played from the first Majesty gigs up to the most current pre-Season Tour shows. I would really appreciate any help.

    I have some DT shows (mostly on boot CD), and they give me an idea of the set list at various points on each tour. But being the stickler for accuracy that I am, I would like to know the set list played on most (if not all) dates from each tour.

    I also am looking for people to also make corrections where I may have made mistakes or have gotten inaccurate info. For those who would like to help me out, please e-mail me and Ill send the list to you. Thanx in advance!

    Hmmm...why should this apply more to students than anyone else? I graduated from UCD a year-and-a-half ago, but I'm not *ancient* <g> (FYI: I'll be 24 as of next month, and Keith is 26).

    Actually, while I have introduced my parents to some music I enjoy (i.e. The Gipsy Kings, Yothu Yindi), they're both more into New Age, light jazz, and world music.

    Keith plays Dream Theater for anyone he can. His supervisor at work is now a fan, as well as a co-worker. His supe is in his 30s, but the co-worker is the same age as my mom.

    Today, he intends to indoctrinate a cousin (there's a family reunion of sorts happening this weekend), 41, and her hubby, 44. She may like it...Keith played stuff like Don Dokken for her before while they cruised around in his car and talked. He's familiar with and likes Kansas and such...
