Is DT planning on booking any other showdates besides Providence?
When I call EastWest they continue to insist this is the only date
    scheduled.

A friend has checked with venues here in Atlanta and he says he could
work out a fairly sizeable guarantee for DT if they want to arrange
Southeastern dates. How much is left on the tour, and who do we
    contact about booking?

Someone asked this... Other than the breakdown in "Learning To Live", the only other song I think is the intro to "The Killing Hand" off "When Dream And Day Unite". He may have used it back in the Majesty days. Oh yeah... he uses it on the solo of "The Silent Man" off "Awake". Almost forgot...

Hey all... just wanted to tell an interesting story. Earlier this evening I was playing computer games and listening to my tape of Subconscious that someone kindly dubbed for me. I knew my tape player's batteries wouldn't hold out much longer (I've been listening to this album non-stop for three days), but I didn't know when they would go. Well, I happened to first notice it while listening to ACoS. First, James' voice just sounded ... well, a little lower than normal. Then everything was noticeably slower, probably about 3/4 speed. The overall effect was very interesting. For one thing I could actually hear each individaul note, instead of the usual racing blur. It was a trip. Every note was so clear, and you could tell how tight the harmonies were. It was pretty cool. I guess people with high-tech equipment slow songs down when they're figuring out tab and such, but this was cheap, and I was kinda bored. Fortunately, I have spare batteries, so I didn't have to go very long before listening again. BTW, it finally died at the beginning of the second verse of Oh Holy Night. Poor Charlie was sounding pretty bad by then :)

    Take care all Adam amarshal@physics.trinity.edu

    Dear jammers,

Hey, what's up? I've succeeded in converting a couple of more people! The first one was gradual. I had my guitar teacher transcribing Dream Theater songs for almost two years now. Now, he is a Dream Theater fan! Also, I told him to play some Dream Theater for some of his friends. Well, he only had the chance to play DT for one person so far. He played Metropolis for him. I think the exact words of my teacher was that "my friend was flipping out when he heard Metropolis". Cool!

    Yours, Jeff =)

    P.S. BTW, I'm 18 yrs old.

The Strand Theater is a Nightclub!!! Alcoholic beverages are sold there. Thus, the State regulates that all shows be listed as "21 and over". Some bands work out a clause which allow fans 18-20 years of age to enter the show, but are "marked" so they cannot purchase liquor. This doesn't happen for all shows, and some fans should feel lucky it's happening for DT.

You'll just have to catch them at a venue that doesn't sell liquor. Berklee Performace Center or the like is what you're looking for, unfortunately most of the dates on the AWAKE tour have been in nightclubs.

Hmmmm. Good point Jon. I never thought about it but your lucky that they even have 18 and over. Since the club sells alcohol, they could just say it's 21 and over. I've seen shows that are 19 and over too. It seems to be at the discression of the club if they let in anyone under 21. Sorry about that. --------------------- >Anyone headed to the Providence show, be sure to pick up your complimentary >programme in the lobby. Cool, Buck. What's gonna be in the program? Not that it matters because I won't find out until tomorrow after I've been to the show and got a program :).

Heh, heh, heh. Since I started this thread a few months ago, I just wanted to jump in with, what surely will not be, one last comment. I'm a musician (bassist). I've been to a couple music schools and studied privately. When I posted what I determined to be, the intro for The Mirror, it was just because I really wanted to know. It sparked quite a debate then someone had the music and posted what the book said. The book made a lot of sense and really helped me because I wouldn't have thought about it (it's notated in 12/8 which DT uses a lot and sounds very cool). So I just want to say that it's obvious some people like to talk about this stuff and some don't. If you do, then you can learn something and if you don't, skip it. There's lot's of stuff that I skip on this list but I think it's great to be able to talk about the technical stuff in DT since I have no one else to talk about it with. Now that I know what's happening, I have new ideas for song writing. When you study jazz, everyone says to transcribe solos and learn them. What's different about DT? Sorry if some of you guys aren't into it. I don't complain when there's something I'm not interested in.

    Hey fellow DT lovers,

I'm new to this list. My name is James and I'm a college student in Morthridge CA. I used to be a musician, but I wasn't very good, but I know what good music is, and Dream Theater is the best.

    I agree with Buck that:

    >To me, if you were all FAITHFUL DT fans, you'd be calling your radio >stations and sending MTV E-mail __demanding__ DT to be played!!! To me, >spend a little less time chatting on ytsejam and more time bugging the >industry people ... that is where I think y'all could make a difference.

I did a little web browsing and found these MTV addresses:

    http://mtvoddities.viacom.com/feedback.html

    feedback@mtvoddities.viacom.com

The first is a homepage with a convenient form to fill ou twhile the other is their email address. If everybody continually writes them, demanding that they play DT, maybe we'll get some action. If anybody has any other addresses to radio stations etc., post them so we can bombard them with requests for DT.

Note: I actually saw teh Lie video once on MTV at about 2:00am.

    Cheers,

    James Garrett

    hi all,

I've been a fan of DT from their WDADU times and still think they are doing a good job playing interesting music. I'm from Bangladesh (it's near India for those who don't know where it is ) and like Indian music we have a lot of complex rhythms. Those who want to explore more with poly rhythms should listen to the tabla players. you can listen to Shakti (John mclaughlin, L Shanker-violin, Zakir Hussain-tabla) awesome stuff. all kinds of odd rhythms. I know you guys are pretty open minded so give it a try ...I think you will like it.

have fun in the mean time.

    Jammers,

If you guys have Sun boxes at your sites running Solaris, pester your admins to crank up Radio Free Ethernet. What it does is allow you to take a device (tape, cd player, microphone...) and broadcast it on Ethernet. Then all you have to do is tap into that *station* and you can hear what is playing. Anywhere you go at the site. If you can get several broadcasts going, you could tap into any number of stations, just like radio. The sound quality isn't super great but tolerable. I have my cdrom player patched into my speakerbox. Its pretty cool.

Why in Hell am I telling you? Because the first CD broadcasted was AWAKE! (Look even DT content!) :D

Good point. My question is, is where does artistic expression end and money making begin? What would happen if DT started to only write songs like Another Day, Wait for Sleep or The Silent Man to try and be 'more accessible'? Although the band may become more famous and sell more records - I wonder whether half the people on the jam currently would stop listening to them.

[deleted] > >To me, if you were all FAITHFUL DT fans, you'd be calling your radio >stations and sending MTV E-mail __demanding__ DT to be played!!! To me, >spend a little less time chatting on ytsejam and more time bugging the >industry people ... that is where I think y'all could make a difference.

Another good point. I have no problems playing DT to people who I hardly know - most have had a favourable reaction. However - the radio stations down here have a very strict format - maybe only The Silent Man could get played - if that took off then we may have the same effect as when Extreme released More than Words and Hole-hearted. I know of at least three people who liked the songs but hated the album, where as I hated the songs and liked the album!

Well, I've never heard of a seperate age for males and females, although I'm not surprised. I guess its for the same reason that women don't have to pay a cover charge sometimes: to get more women into the club, thus bettering the odds for men. Sexist, yes. I'm females and I refuse to patronize places like that (most of them are 21+ clubs and I can't get in anyway, but some private parties are like that too) Recently, I went to one of those bars-that-let-you -in-if-you're-18, but got charged $2 more than a 21+ person would be. I didn't know that was legal, but according to several sources, that was common (I'm not a bar person, and most of the concerts I've seen were either Ticketmaster, festivals, or places in Wisconsin that don't care how old you are to drink, much less get in). I think that extra charges for young people is rediculous -- if basically says, "If you're too young to spend $50 on drinks, you're not welcome here." (Besides, the bounces at said bar was such a bastard anyway--told me alcohol didn't taste good until you're 21 -- CANAL STREET TAVERN in Dayton, OH if you're wondering)

So my advice would be for people who can't see DT for these silly rules: 1) Hang in there. A few more years and the age limts won't matter. 2) Move to Canada (drinking age is 19, 18 in Quebec, enforced like the US smoking age), Europe, or at least Wisconsin. 3) See DT in another venue, like I did at Summerfest (Milwaukee). $7 park admission. No service charge, drink minimum, or sexist/ageist rules (liquor laws still apply).

To anyone knowledgable of the law: What are the laws concering age/gender pricing and admittance? Are any of the above laws legal?

Oh well. Only 1 more year and two months until I don't have to worry about it anymore.

    Old Trivia Answers:

--What prog concept album has the title/artist in Morse code on the cover of the album, and in the beginning and ending bits of the CD? ; clue, this artist is a former member of a well-known Prog band, which use a similar technique at the beginning/end of one their well-known albums.

Yes, its 'Radio Chaos' by Roger Waters; The 'full-circle' ending to beginning link is on PF's 'The Wall as well.

--What well known three word phrase from the Who's Quadraphenia is lyrically and musically quoted by Fish on Marillion's 'Misplaced Childhood'? clue, the quote is NOT on lyrics insert. What is the origin of 'Marillion's' band name?

Yes, its "Rain on Me", or is it "Reign O'er Me"; now you've got me confused. Its on 'Misplaced Childhood' right at the end of 'Bitter Suite' and before 'Heart of Lothian' And, yes, Marillion, is a shortened form of 'The Silmarillion' by J.R.R. Tolkien.

--For those that keep asking "What does this have to do with DT?" Simply, I was inspired by the mention of rock trivia at the DT convention. It seems that many of you Y'Jammers like to answer my trivia questions. And even I learn something from my own questions.

-Since I have gotten some positive responses I'll try some more trivia questions, as I think of new ones that are related to current JAM threads

    New Trivia questions:

    1. Speaking of 'Quadrephenia', Pete Townsend wrote another 'rock opera' between 'Tommy' and 'Quadrephenia'. What is/was the working title of that rock opera, Although this rock opera never made it to production, some of the songs were recorded on various Who albums.

    2. On Queen, DT did do a cover of 'Bohemian Rhadsody'. Question: In what area of academic pursuit (PhD program) was Brian May involved before dropping out to stay with Queen?

No flames, just a more precise answer. 'Tears', which DT did as a cover was a part of the composition '2112' on Rush' album '2112'

What is it pollyrhythms or poliorhythms. Just to clarify, poliorhythms are rhythms with no meter or sinkopation at all; its just the drummer flailling around with his polly parrots, while the base player is over free-basing in the corner. The guirarist is shredding cabbage for cole slaw; while the keyboardist is having a new master lock made, so the vocalist won't steal his crackers and bier. (With many apologies to those who know somone who suffers from this tragic disease and its consequences--seriously)

On the Extreme albums--they are all high on my playlist, except the first one, which I don't have; is it worth getting?

This may have been mentioned here before, but it bears repeating. For those of you who still have not checked out Echolyn, there are short snips of each song on As the World at the following site:

Hey, it sold me on them in a big way.

Funny, my wife listened to them and right away said, "They sound like Level 42". And you know what? The sort of do. Only Echolyn has more shifts and changes. And speaking of mondo stud-from-hell bass players, Mark King of Level 42 is one. Just thought you should know.

    > Someone mentioned this in a previous post... Anyway... I was wondering how > many people's parents like DT... (I know this applies more to students than > anyone else... )

Well, my mom's 53 (kind of old) and she never got into rock at all although I remember her playing opera when I was little. Conversely, one of my best friends in college is [now] the same age and he loved rock, mostly classic, but I introduced him to Satch !>)> I guess it depends on how conservative your upbringing was. > Anyway, my mother likes alot of DT's songs... except for some of the faster > more metal-like songs like Lie, etc... She also likes Rush... (in fact, > when I was driving my grandmother to the doctor, I had a Rush boot in the CD > player, and she liked it...)

Never tried to get her to like DT (although now I'm inspired to try !>)> I do remember her kind of liking Rush's HYF (I made her listen to it once on the walkman). She also liked some of Neil's solos that I played for her.
