    Hello Jammers,

I'm reading about all sorts of nice bootlegs and special CD's on this list
and I would really like some of them on tape. Problem is I'm from Holland
so it would be difficult to send tapes. Another thing is I don't have
    anything to trade.

If there's someone out there who doesn't think these are problems at all
and would be willing to help me out, please mail me. Or maybe someone from
Europe is reading this, which will make posting much easier.

I sure hope to hear from anyone soon...

    Hello 'Jammers!

Some quick comments. Really quick... yawn...:

Moshing: Can be really fun. Even to DT - when you're alone at home and
listen to the record... when I want to SEE a band, and I DO want to see DT,
moshing gets on my nerves. I was very happy that the rest of the crowd at
the two DT gigs I saw this year did think so. I've NEVER seen so calm fans
before. Ok, I did, but then it was because everybody was bored to death...

    To Mike Bahr: who's S.H.?

Best and worst band member: When I listen to a band the first time, it's
often the singer who spoils the whole thing. But even when the vocals are
fine, especially bad drumming is deadly.

Hello, Michael Martin! I also know a female DT fan: my girlfriend. I made
her listen to all three albums and that was it. Favorite songs: PMU and
Wait for Sleep. When driving in her car that changes to 6:00 and
Mirror/Lie. That killer car hifi and the killer seven string sound on
Mirror are a very, very good team...

At the moment I'm trying to convert one of my friends. He didn't like
Awake, so I tried it with I&W. Haven't met him since then. We'll see.
Another friend of mine was an easier case. When I got WDADU years ago, I
told him that it was already my all time favorite, so he bought it and
loved it. A VERY easy covert, indeed...

Megadeth's new album: As shitty as the new Marillion thing. If you happen
to like the new Marillion album, listen to Season's End once again. After
that you'll also think they took the outtakes from the SE-sessions and put
them, roughly mixed, on their new CD. Anyone noticed that little comment on
the back cover? "This album was knocked out". I hope this means that this
was their last album for EMI and they did it just to get out of their
    contract.

AWAKE's dead? If you just see airplay, maybe. They didn't seem to have the
luck Extreme and Mr. Big had with their acoustic songs. What a pity. But
well... Maybe DT doesn't have the best label, but still the best fans... ;-)

I just saw Live in Japan for the first time - great! Just a couple of
    questions.

Does anyone from the jam appear in the portions where fans are being
interviewed or waiting to get in to one of the concerts?

How long have the band been playing the intro to Mirror as an intro to TtT?

Oh yeah, one more thing about the video for "Lie." Kevin isn't in it. It must have been filmed after he left, but before the new guy joined, because there's no keyboard player.

The note Jeff addressed to me earlier in the Jam was in reference to this; I was intending to publish that in issue 9, and in fact that's what I was holding on when I decided to ditch that issue altogether, and I still am holding on it for issue 10. As he stated, it was his friend who conducted the interview and is responsible for transcribing it. I haven't gotten a response from the guy, so I don't know what his story is.... unless I get it by this weekend, I won't be printing it. But with a good amount of luck, I *may* have something even more interesting than that to publish within the next couple issues... <G>

Hello to all fellow jammers! I was just wondering, all of us (okay, most of us) have given our ages, our majors, and on one occasion our biggest joy (baby baby baby :) ) I was going to inquire about everyone's ethnic background, not that it matters as far as every being plain people, but it would be nice to further discover just how diverse a listening audience and fan-following Dream Theater can garner. Anyone with me on this? I am Vietnamese.

I also asked this before, but got no response (may have something to do with changing addresses). Anyway, I was aondering if anyone has gotten ahold of a boot of the Ronnie Scotts gig? If so, is there any way you could make a copy? I would totally dig it. I like collecting good (and some not so good :) cover tunes (I'm sure these are all good) that are not necessarily easily available. Cool. God bless.

You're absolutely correct, Erik. Those are correct time signatures for The Mirror. However, I've chosen to put everything in a larger "two" feel because I don't hear a quarter-note pulse in the intro, but a half-note pulse instead. I think of the 4-note pattern (duh-duh-duh-rest) as being made-up of eighth notes, not sixteenth-notes (as your quarter-note-as-pulse system would indicate). The intro just feels (to me) as though it's in (and around) 2, not 4.

Also, by having everything in a "two" feel I maintain more of a consistent metrical (as well as visual) system. This is because of the way the 4-note pattern continues in its ryhthmic make-up throughout the song with the drums merely shifting the accents over it; the guitars never change their own "feel" and are always just "duh-duh-duh-rest". In order for your system (of sixteenth notes) to preserve this consistency, it would require a 12/16 measure in place of your 12/8 measure. I think you'd agree that 12/16 is a bit unusual (though perfectly legal...). Further, according to my system, there is no need to convert the previous note values to any other (sixteenth=eighth, etc.), because the basic unit (eighth note) never changes if everything is in a "two" feel.

The same awkwardness applies to the following measures of (your) 4/4, 2/4, and 9/16. The music in the 4/4 is clearly a half-time feel, so why notate a half-time feel in 4/4 when half-time is usually notated as 2/2? Also, the last note of the 9/16 loses much of its metrical meaning (granted, this is more of a visual, score point...) if it is represented as a sixteenth note that is to be followed by an eighth note. This would not happen if 9/8 was used in this same area of the song.

    Anyway, thanks for the post.

    Hi,

I've been away (from the computer) for a few days and wanted to comment on the Providence show. Remember that it was my first time seeing DT but it RULED!!!! IT WAS AWESOME! INCREDIBLE! I liked it :). I had heard that they play really loud so I was prepared for way too loud. They sounded great! I could hear every instrument. I did have earplugs in but everything was so clear. LaBrie sounded terrific. They played Surrounded :). ACOS hasn't changed too much. A new intro and they extended a part near the end (sorry for the detail). LaBrie did something wierd/cool with the end though hanging on one note for a few lines. It seemed like a live version thing not the way it would be in the studio. I wonder if that's how he does it on the studio version. It really created tension :). I wish that they played TTT but they played the acoustic guitar and acoustic electric bass version of Wait for Sleep. That was cool. The Mirror/Lie was awesome. It was just a great f___ing concert! One thing that I realised, since I haven't been to a concert hall concert in years, I loved seeing DT up close like I did. The Strand is a great sounding club and it was a great way to see a band. I wish DT all the success in the world but I'll be a little sad to see them in a big place where they'll really be seperated. I'm sure they'd be great no matter what though.

I ended up missing Echylon. Anybody see them? How are they? I was looking forward to hearing them but we got there just as they ended.

BTW, I did manage to meet one Jammer, Brian ? (sorry I forgot your last name, I'm lucky to have remembered your first. I'm really bad with names.) I might have met more but I didn't know what the Ytsejam shirt looked like :\.

Hah,hah, hah, hah!!!! (ROTFWL) VEry funny! It's good to hear some humour on the YtseJam! Thx for the laughs... I think I need my sleep. On that topic... someone mentioned playing (I think...) quarter notes and also triplets at the same time... I liked that explanation... One good example from the classical world: Debussy's Arabesque (in E major), a piano solo piece incorporates polyrhythms. After the intro of six/eight bars (? Already forgot, tho I played it yesterday!) the right hand plays triplets against 8ths in the left... makes a very neat sound... check it out (this arabesque is one of my fav Debussy pieces).

I have one question about Echolyn. I just saw their CD in the downtown Toronto HMV. I don't remember the title, but do ppl who have it recommend it? If this helps, I really love DT (surprise), Galactic cowboys for their groove, heaviness, and melody/harmony integration... same for King's X (more melody/harmony). Will it appeal to more technical oriented musicians/listeners? Thx for any help. (BTW: I will check out the sony site!)

DT content: WHEN!! will DT come back to Toronto???????!!!!!!

Someone mentioned how great it was that GC was now on Metal Blade Records. Well, I don't know how good that is for GC. Look at how Metal Blade has promoted Fates Warning.

To the guy doing the mixed tape:

That sounds like a great idea. I hear alot about other prog bands, but I am reluctant to go buy anything based solely on hearsay (I tried it once w/ Magellan and I was disappointed). I'd like to hear Shadow Gallery especially (is that track listed from their new one?). i would definitely be interested if you decide to do it.

Ah, sorry. Someone posted that John used a classical guitar on the intro to A Vision <from Majesty>. If you listen real closely, you'll hear the tonal response of the strings as that of a steel-string acoustic. <I know, I've transcribed it...and am listening to in now.> The sound is warm, and it fooled me, as well.

I wish DT would come through Sydney, Aus. or Winnipeg, Canada on their next tour. John Petrucci is the best player I've heard since the late Criss Oliva and Randy Rhoads...I really want to see him play live. The "Music In Progress" video wasn't enough.

Really? I thought the sound quality was one of the worst of any show EVER and the volume was WAY too excessive. I was wearing earplugs and my ears *still* hurt the next day. NO excuse for that. If that was the band's own sound-man, he should be fired immediately.

    James' voice was incredible.

When I could finally hear it towards the end of the show, he did indeed sound in good form. When I could hear Derek, he also sounded quite good (esp. since I was expecting less than good after some of the slagging he's recieved here).

Which means, your LOCAL site. Before I sent my original post out to the YJ, I cranked up SunNet Manager. It DIDN'T show ANY degradation of bandwidth. I figured that it might suck up bandwidth but it doesn't. RFE can broadcast either with IP Multicasting or UDP Broadcast packets. If you are using it with UDP packets, it only uses one port, UDP port 5002. If you are using IP Multicasting, RFE broadcasts to a specific address, 224.0.2.255. Only hosts interested will receive the data packet. The others will just reject it. RFE is confined to a local segment unless your routers are configured to forward UDP Broadcast and/or IP Multicast packets between your segments. In either case, firewalls won't pass this type of network traffic. If you couldn't follow all this technical mumbo-jumbo, it states that you cannot broadcast RFE to the Internet.

Before you shoot your mouth off, you should do your homework.

I have never heard of Internet Phone before your post. I found out that it is a little gimmick that service providers promote to get users to sign on. So, point your ramblings at them, not me. I am not flaming service providers. I am just saying that if you do not like the performance of a provider, change providers.

You listed that I am sucking down YOUR bandwidth. I don't think so, pal. Sounds like you need to stop believing everything that you read in the network column of Compute! magazine. I think that if you want to conserve bandwidth, don't post crap like your last message. And if you upgrade your 2400 modem to match USA OnRamp's (gee, your service provider...) 28.8 offerings, you might be able to FTP your nudie GIFs out of there a lot faster.

You picked on the wrong computer geek, pal.

    Johnny

Just wanted to comment on some of the other shows that people have been talking about (and was very disappointed that I discovered DT AFTER they came through Pittsburgh).

I saw Queensryche with Type-O Negative about a month ago. I have to concur with the general opinion that it was great.

Type-O has some interesting songs, my favorite is 'Christian Woman', followed by 'Black No. 1', then their interesting rendition of Seal's & Crofts' 'Summer Breeze'. The back of their album has a quote, 'Don't mistake lack of talent for genius.' I got a kick out of that when I read it. They don't lack talent so it must be a social comment.

But Queensryce was in top form. This was the third time I've seem them and they just keep getting better. There's no better value for your concert dollar either. They played for over 2 hours -- every song from Promised Land, half of them from MindCrime, and some of the best from Rage and Warning! They played the obligatory 'Silent Lucidity', 'Empire', and 'Jet City Woman', but left out my favorite from Empire 'The Thin Line'.

I saw MegaDeth 2 weeks ago and I have to disagree with the general opinion that Youthanasia sucks. But even if that's your opinion, you would enjoy the concert, because they played only 3 songs from it. Their whole set was short (In my opinion) but they were tight and together. Dave appears to be a down to earth kind of guy and I don't think he's 'sold out'. I think he's going in a different direction and attempting to appeal to a wider audience. I don't consider them progressive. A better category is 'Classic Heavy Metal'.

Korn sucks. They have too much of the inner city attitude. Don't step on my turf - I'll put a 9 in your skull. They're just mediocre musicians with big attitudes.

Flotsam and Jetsam are OK. They understand how to play a show and don't have nearly the attitude most up and coming metal bands have. They jumped in the pit after they were through and shook everyone's hands. That's what good rock and roller's should do.

I'll be seeing Marillion on Saturday (8-12). I'm looking forward to it after some of the reviews.

The all time greatest concert (according to me) would be the following:

Marillion opens for Dream Theater followed by Queensryche then Rush

After that I'd have to die because it just couldn't get any better.

When has has the poly rhythm been mentioned and what is it????!!!! Sounds cool!

Continuing New Trivia question, since I've only gotten one reply, I'll post this one a little longer:

    1. Speaking of 'Quadrephenia', Pete Townsend wrote another 'rock opera' between 'Tommy' and 'Quadrephenia'. What is/was the working title of that rock opera, Although this rock opera never made it to production, some of the songs were recorded on various Who albums.

    Old Trivia Answer:

    1. On Queen, DT did do a cover of 'Bohemian Rhadsody'. Question: In what area of academic pursuit (PhD program) was Brian May involved before dropping out to stay with Queen?

I've heard Astronomy, Physics & Astrophysics; I'll go with Astrophysics since its the answer I've encountered most often from other sources.

Something that attracted my interest was Tony Iommi's appearance with many of the bands that played Queen covers at the Freddy Mercury/AIDS benefit concert put on by Brian May. Its hard to miss BS' left-handed axeman.

Not really trivia question: Significant left-handed guitarists/bassists: Start with the obvious: Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Eric Gales, Paul McCartney, and I believe the late Kurt Cobain (?).

Are there any left-handed keyboardists? This would be of interest, since most keyboard music is right-hand-oriented, i.e. the lead, or melody, line/speed is usually written /played by the right hand, while the left hand tends to play more chords/fill-in/harmony; I know this is just a generalization, but it is what I have observed. Is there such a thing as a left-handed drummer? Vocalists? (probably tend to hold the mic more often in their left rather than right hand?) Do left-handed musicians have that special artistic giftedness that is often attributed to left-handed/right brain persons? BTW, I'm right-handed, but my sister is left-handed.

On samples & sound clips: I'm not sure about the legalities, but they (DT, etc.) probably don't have to acknowledge/pay royalties if they don't put the text down in writing. I've noticed that the lyrics for covers are often not included on the lyrics sheet for an album/CD. There may also be some restrictions based on length of quotation, as is oftened mentioned on the copyright page of many books.

The following question appeared in the most recent issue of the Gretchen (King's_X) mailing list: " What do (sic) KING'S X have in common with EXTREME, DREAM THEATER, and GALACTIC COWBOYS. I [the poster] picked those three names 'cause they are the three names that seem to appear at least once in everyone's messages....It just strikes me funny that so many people have found a common link between these bands that most people could/would never notice." I know that a number of Y'Jammer's are on Gretchen; but I still have to agree with the question/quote. All these bands are high on my play list. I would also include Rush, Queensryche and Fate's Warning in the list. WHAT is the COMMON THREAD? Excellent music and thought-provoking lyrics?

Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted, but something I thought should not be missed is that EVE has acoustic guitar in it. I don't think it picks up until about half way thru (or more), and it lays under the piano, so its not real distinct, but it's there. It sounds beautiful too. Listen to it in a good pair of headphones, and you can hear JP strumming. Anyway, I just didn't want this to go unnoticed. BTW, I'm obviously talking about the studio version.

    KAI

ps. Thank goodness they're not putting EVE and To Live Forever on the ACOS EP! That actually makes the Lie single, Silent Man single, and the 3'' CD single packaged with the Japanese release of Awake worth something.
