Hello everyone, it's Babs. Two things on my agenda today:

    1) To John Nguyen: I myself was wondering the different ethnic backgrounds of the Ytsejammers too. I work for the Multicultural Affairs office on campus and for the longest time I had wondered if we had any African American jammers. As for my ethnic background - part Sicilian (through my dad) and Scots-German (from my mom).

    2) Can anyone on the list help me w/ this? I am searching for a copy of Rolling Stone magazine dating back to either January or February '95. It has Aerosmith's Steven Tyler w/ his 19 year old daughter, Liv, on the front. The cover must be in good condition! I am willing to pay for the cost of the mag, plus shipping and handling or am willing to trade some DT stuff the magazine. Thank you.

So, my next question is -- What is this "Metropolis" magazine thing referenced in Jeff's note, and how can I get ahold of Issue #10, should the interview make it to that issue?

Is this something published in conjunction with the DT Fan Club? I wouldn't know, I'm not a member (although they cashed my check, I just never got anything for it?!).

I spoke with the Echolyn dudes at the Providence DT show -- they were out in the lobby selling t-shirts while the first band, Shadowplay, performed.

They informed me that not only do they (Echolyn) have a mailing list for fans, they informed me their CD is readily available at most record stores -- recommending Tower Records or Coconuts or the like to find it. It's on Epic Records.

We have two hard drives on our computer and we are going to be installing Windows 95 on our main drive. No DT content here... skip on if you like but,... ...I wanted to start spreading the word about a great new band I've been checking out here in Austin. As the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is home to many great acts, such as Pushmonkey, Sunflower, Ian Moore Band, etc., as well as the birthplace and home of guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughn. (One of Petrucci's influences, I believe...) Anyway, the point is, Austin's got a great new band called 'Breedlove' that is packing out the live music venues at every show. I wouldn't deem them metal, though I'd definitely say they are progressive. They sound sort of like a mix between the Black Crowes and Primus, with a little jazz thrown in for some funky sounds. They've only been playing since January together, and already have been offered a major deal for their first demo. The really cool thing about them is the guitarist - the bastard son of Jimmie Vaughn, Stevie Ray's brother. His name is Tyrone Vaughn-Fullerton, and he's the only male heir to the Vaughn legacy. (Stevie had no kids and Jimmie only has a legitimate daughter.) He's extremely talented! (Is it blood or practice, who can say?) I'm going to boot the next few shows I go to. Saturday they're playing an acoustic set at the Saxon Pub here in Austin, and next Friday a full set at the famous Steamboat on 6th. Their last show there packed the place out to the fire-limit... we had to wait outside for people to leave before we could get in. If progressive means to define a new style, I'd definitely label them a prog. band. I may upload a song or two to our web server here, if anyone's interested... I'll post the http address at that time. Sorry for the non-DT content, but since I know all of you can appreciate great musicianship, I couldn't resist spreading the word about this group... The only drummer I can think of offhand who's a lefty is Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), though, ideally, a drummer ought to be able to play leading with either hand or limb. there's a pretty cool article in Modern Drummer from two months ago I believe that addresses issues of the lefty drummer.

I am putting the finishing touches on the next version of the Dream Theater Song Book, and need a little information if possible. I need to know who should be credited for the following lyrics: From the Majesty Demos: Another Won Your Majesty A Vision Two Far Vital Star March Of The Tyrant (I have some guesses on these, but a definative answer would be great) Also who wrote the lyrics for these covers, Red Hill Mining Town by U2 on "The Joshua Tree" Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin on "Physical Graffiti" In The Dead Of Night by UK on "UK" Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas on what album Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' by Journey on what album (I think this is a Steve Perry song)... Turn It On Again by Genesis on "Duke" And on what album or single does Song For Eric appear by Tori Amos? One last question: I have also been putting the origins of the samples in the song book, but there are some I don't have: The "Six o'clock on a Christmas morning..." sample in 6:00 The samples from the Mirror, the second set of samples from Space-Dye Vest and the samples used in Don't Look Past Me. If anybody has any of this info send it to me directly, I'll let everyone know when the new version is ready... Thanks, Mike For BABS: I have that issue of Rolling Stone, which I will trade for a pint or two of Ben & Jerry's or a couple of Limes. 8^) +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ | Michael Kizer -- Computer Sciences Corporation (Tucson, AZ) | | mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com (preferred) -or- mkizer@indirect.com | | http://www.indirect.com/www/mkizer/index.htm | | ^--> Check here for the Dream Theater Song Book... | | "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose." -Rush (The Band!) | +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+

On 8/7 I went to see Marillion and what a great show it was! A few minutes before they went on I looked up and lo and behold there was Mike Portnoy. I took this opportunity to ask Mike about the Fuck in ACoS. He told me to log on and tell you all that it has been cut out. He didn't want to take it out because he wrote the lyrics but after all the complaining the band decided it would be best to change it. By the way that whole thread about it being an anti-Christian thing was all for naught. We thought the line in question said "and i don't need your mass you fuck to get me through the day" actually said "and i don't need your mercy fuck to get me through the day". Mike was not aware that we had misinterpreted the line in this way and seemed rather shocked. He also said that he had just given advance CDs of the ACoS EP to the guys in Marillion and they had given him a 2CD set called "The Making of Brave". Of course after hearing this I ran righ over to buy it because they were selling it at the show for only $25. I asked how many tracks from the R. Scotts gig would be included and he said 4 but they were long ones 1) The large medley in it's entirety, 2) The Led Zep medley 3) The Elton John medley and 4) Perfect Strangers.

I recently aquired this and IMHO the demo version of TtT is way better than the one that appeared on I&W. The key level is up throughout the song and there are other guitar parts that can now be heard that were mixed out of the released version. I think that if the song had appeared on Awake, it would have sounded like this - but with a bit more refinement.

    well, kinda :)

my friend randy garza in houston is the dude in the I&W burning heart shirt that says "incredible". we were at an autograph session at the sound warehouse in humble, tx. there was this girl with what looked like a normal home camcorder filming everyone, and said "it is for the band". they filmed me, too, but must have thought i was too much of a dork to put on there :)

mike p. actually recognized randy at the houston show last year and told everyne "hey its the video houston dude" :) then invited him on the fates tour bus with him to shoot the shit. pretty cool.

i cant believe i was at that autograph session and failed to notice the girl getting her chest signed. doh!

That's wierd. I had earplugs in too but I heard everything great. Every instrument (including LaBrie's) came through clearly and my ears were fine immediately after the show. I was expecting it too be way too loud but it was a great sound. I thought the sound man did a great job. BTW, no one mentioned that they played Eve over the PA as the lights came on after the show.

I could hear everyone all the time. Where were you standing? I was on the lower part but near the stairs as you come down and on the left side (facing the stage). Anyway, Derek was awesome too. Still has that short hair. I don't know what that's about but he's a great keyboard player. I just wish I could've seen him better. I think all the tall people should have to stand behind me :).

The only other lefty rock drummer that I can think of would be Phil Collins.

BTW, I'm half cuban. My Dad is Cuban and my Mom is 100% small town as possibly white as you can get! :-)

I believe that, at the time, they referred to this as "Puppies On Acid". I could be wrong, but has anyone heard Puppies On Acid?

It's not a theory when it's correct! Check the "Awake" songbook...it was edited by John Petrucci... Need I say more?

Thanks, in reference to someone actually agreeing with me on the time counts in "The Mirror" I see where you're coming from, also. But the times I posted feel right, to me, when I play it. So, I'll leave it at that...thanx Glenn But, like I said...check the Warner-published songbook. It WAS, after all, edited by Petrucci himself.

In a message dated 95-08-09 10:23:56 EDT, you write:

    > Since we're talking about drummers, and since people have mentioned >>their amazement at Portnoy and his rhythms, I have one question: Who is >>this Polly guy? Obviously, if he invented the Polly-rhythm that's been >>mentioned on the list so frequently, he must be a hell of a percussionist >>too. Does anyone know who he played for? Just curious. Trey Allen tallen@junix.ju.edu

Trey, Trey, Trey...(sigh)..if you had read my post a week ago you would already know that " this Polly guy?"..is not a person but a parrot, well actually a pair of parrots, preferably on the skinny side. They are used ( after very special training) as drumsticks. Hence...polly rhythms. If you need more information let me know.

no need to thank me... Warren in Oregon (thanks BABS)
