Hey, that reminds me. For any of you Mac users out there with an AV or
PowerMac, I was at MacWorld Boston and saw the new version of Logic Audio
2.5 from Emagic. It now supports direct to disk recording on a Q660AV/840AV
or PowerMac. I have Q660AV and I'll be able to get 6 tracks. Since I have
Logic already, I'll upgrade for $300. That gives me a 6 track digital
recorder for less than a 4 track. Anyway, just thought some of you may be
interested. If you wanna know more, email me.

BTW, that's cool that your prof. like DT.

Yeah, maybe, but you can still use the book as a guide. Like Brian, you can
find and correct the wrong notes. The music isn't completely wrong, more
like Guitar for the Practicing Musician - wrong notes here and there. The
thing I find most often is right notes, wrong tab! But I don't read tab so
it doesn't bother me. I think the books can be used to learn things too and
it sure saves time. Not the same as transcribing it yourself of course.

"Into the Lens." It was not originally on a Buggles album. It was originally
on Drama, and when it went to the Buggles album they took the lame chorus
and made it the title: "I Am a Camera."

    And on ethnicity:

    hey guys!

Hairball: Congrats on getting out of school... my composition and theory teacher has also been subjected to Dream Theater ( ;) ) and he has expressed liking the technicality and musicality of their writing ... his biggest complaint though was the monodynamics (ie everything is loud) ... he does have a point m but i suppose in today's world of marketing (OOPS i meant music!!) we cant expect producers to not compress music (obviously, DT's music contains inherent dynamic changes) and thus create what they perceive is best... i suppose we cant expect the guys to step over their producer on such a point (esp. if Portnoy has trouble getting the drum sound he wants like on I&W -- this compression thing is much more subtle)

    anyways,

First of all, as one of the "sound engineering types" on here, let me emphatically state that EVERYONE should wear earplugs at concerts. Period.

Even if it's something as "cheap" as cotton stuffed in your ears, or those really nice earplugs mentioned elsewhere, you should protect your hearing.

I was chatting with a friend who happens to be an audio engineer. He pulled out a binder, and showed me a photocopied letter that Kerry Livgren (ex-Kansas) had written to a magazine. In it, he said that the damage to his hearing was so extensive, he couldn't even hear well enough to mix the album he'd just released, and had to depend on the word of friends as to how it sounded. He closed the letter with a phrase that has stuck with me since the day I read it: "I wish I had listened to my dad in 1965 when he opened the garage door and said, 'Can't you turn it down?'"

Please - protect your ears, people!

And, regarding the question about "triggered drums." I know I covered this before - could someone put this in the FAQ file? =)

Drum triggers, as used on Images & Words, are simply the electronic replacement of an analog source with a digital sample.

There are a few different ways to utilize this technology. Essentially what happens is the drum's acoustic sound is recorded, and then run through a unit that replaces that acoustic sound with a sampled drum sound. The sample only "occurs" when it receives the signal to do so. The "signal" is the hit of the acoustic drum from the kit. In other words, the sample is "triggered" by the presence of an audio signal.

This is not to say that this is the only way it is done. However, to the best of my knowledge, it is the most common.

Simply put, when one uses drum triggers, an acoustic drum is being turned into an electronic drum. Mike's Kick Drum and Snare Drum were both electronically replaced with SAMPLED, ELECTRONIC DRUMS.

The other way to do it is to tape a sensor to the actual drum, and let the sample be "triggered" that way.

    Hope this helps, -Hairball

If you'd stop being so goddamn condescending and open your eyes, I never said I believed anything the tab book says. Not once in any post did I say I took "tab" books as the gospel of guitar playing. Quite the contrary...

I don't read tab, I find it to be useless and above all, cheating. I vehemently discourage my students from using it. Since I transcribed the "Awake" album, I've developed a clearer picture of DT. And yes, it was done before I got the songbook. <Much better reference than "Tab" book>

So, I'm well aware of the glaring errors found both in songbooks AND the tab posted on the net. I've transcribed WDADU, I&W and AWAKE and am currently finishing <To Live> Forever/ Moon Bubbles from the Music In Progress video.

I'm not saying what I posted is CORRECT. I've tried a few different time counts and I feel what is published in the songbook, and what I transcribed, feel THE MOST COMFORTABLE to me as a player. If another time signature feels comfortable to someone else, so be it. I'm not going to argue over something as petty and insignifigant as a bloody time signature.

So, to sum up...I don't read tab, 9 time out of 10, there is at least 2 errors in it anyway.

Enough arguing, let's get back to the heart of the matter <no pun intended>... DT discussions...

I am responding to a post that mentioned Blind Melon recently. I am in no way trying any of this flame business and in no way mean any disrespect to any of the ytsejammers who mention and/or like Blind Melon. Ok, enough of the disclaimer business.

The reference to Blind Melon was a reference to their drummer being left handed. This is a reprint of the "In The Listening Room" with Blind Melon in January, 1994's Guitar For The Practicing Musician

    "Pull Me Under" Dream Theater

CHRISTOPHER: This could be metal at any moment-I'm just warning everybody. ROGERS: Either that or it could build up into a power ballad. CHRISTOPHER: I feel like we might have to excuse ourselves here for a second. We might have to leave. ROGERS: This is one of those guitar sounds that when he hits a note, about a million lights jump up on his guitar rig. CHRISTOPHER: Any minute now there is going to be a squealy. ROGERS: Is this like Queensryche? CHRISTOPHER: If it is, let's turn it off right away because I hate that band. ROGERS: Hate it. This is the kind of music you listen to right when you start to get your pubic hairs. CHRISTOPHER: I can't even be fair to this music because I hate it so bad. I can't even sit through one song. I know I'm not being fair but I think it is complete garbage. That sort of guitar playing is just stupid. ROGERS: If I want to hear a metal band I rally like old Black Sabbath and Soundgarden; heavy bands with brains. If I were listening to an angry metal band I would be more into Rage Against The Machine or Sugar. I like the Sugar record a lot, I like Sonic Youth a lot. That's heavy, guitar based music that I listen to. CHRISTOPHER: Playing fast for the sake of fast is hideous. I hate that whole mentality of sitting around playing scales and cock-rock crap. ROGERS: I heard some squealies. I don't really like that sound either. I'm not into those guitar sounds. When I hear that stuff I get squeamish. GUITAR: THAT WAS DREAM THEATER. CHRISTOPHER: We'll remember not to buy that record. I bet they have really nice hair though....Now I'm being mean ROGERS: This is just our opinion. There's a lot of people that like Dream Theater and that's fine. They get off on it-good for them. They probably hate us, maybe they won't. CHRISTOPHER: They probably do because we sound like were playing sloppy. But that's alright, it's just a different thing. We're just coming from a different space. ROGERS: In no way do we condemn this sort of music. These people have the right to exist. CHRISTOPHER: Just keep them the hell away from us.

    END.

Now, needless to say I personally was not a Blind Melon fan but after these comments who would ever give them a chance. If anyone read the interview with JP a few months later he had nothing but nice things to say about Blind Melon...(If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all)

While everyone is discussing what songs they would like to see Dream Theater do covers for I have two Points.

    1. To everyone discussing how much they want to see Metallicas "Damage, Inc." on the EP. don't forget that there may be a lot of legal obstacles preventing them from doing so! One more justification for getting rid of all the lawyers in the country.

    2. The song that I would like to see Dream Theater do (And I know that I will get over a thousand flames for saying it) would be Strypers "Soldiers Under Command" I would love to see John Petrucci Re-Interpret the Dual Guitars on that song, with Myung and Portnoy doing the same. Hearing James Labrie sing the Harmonies that Stryper used on that song would be pretty Wild. I would love to hear that song redone.

The sound was not great, but that was not a reflection of how well the band played, it reflect on the guy in the sound booth, the acoustic quality of the club, the amplifiers, and one thing that most people dont realize is that your location is important(What the guy in the sound booth hears, may be completely different then what you hear). But I wish they would not play everything SO LOUD. They are great muscians who don't need to play that loud to be impressive. As they played PMU towards the end, they turned up the sound, and it sounded TERRIBLE.

A Change of Seasons was awesome. Didn't hear the "F" word. The intro was different, but the intro on the subcon CD was still there they just added another into in front of it. I cant wait to hear this on the EP!!!!

James Labrie Voice was OUTSTANDING. However, I wish he would SING more during concerts. He tends to scream alot, in places that he does not scream on the album.

The set list mentioned earlier I beleive was correct, but the order was wrong. But that is not important.

Derek was great!! although difficult to hear at times. I think many people here are too hard on him. He has a different style than Kevin, and hopefully this will add a new dimension to the band. I became a DT fan becuasue the Keys caught my ear, and I was very sad to see Kevin leave the band. And Dereks Solo was AWESOME!!!! Am I the only person who noticed that the Heavy Ending to the solo was none other then VanHalens "Eruption" played on Keys. When I mentioned it to the people standing around me, they also noticed it!!!

Acoustic Wait for Sleep was Awesome. Also John Petrucci played the really fast part on "Erotomania" with ease (The part after the little Bach piece).

Perfect Strangers was the first encore, and it was great. I am guessing this will be the single for the EP(Since, I know MY RADIO STATION, does not play too many 23 minute songs <G>).

P.S.: To all of you discussing the fact that Derek has short hair. Who the Hell Cares? I want to hear him play music, not sleep with him. I mean I could care less what DT looks like, as long as they produce good music. Maybe you should go buy a couple of Milli-Vanilli albums, they did not sing, but they had "Cute Hair"

    Hey -

Thanks to Tim Lodge for hookin' me up w/InstruMental I + II (which are both pretty good (esp. II w/YYZ, Farandole, and ACOS), but most especially the Majesty demos. Whew! Those things rule. It's sort of odd that one of my favorite songs of late is from an unreleased album recorded by a bunch of 18 year olds in 1986 (A Vision).

Long songs - Someone mentioned Trilogy of Knowledge by Believer - Singularity is also on the second side of the tape, but I believe that the entire album is over an hour long (if you have the cassette, take a look at how much tape is stuffed in that thing). Kurt Bachman has said it's a half hour long or so. I like ACOS because it's not divided into movements like other long songs (although I like that too) such as 2112, Close to the Edge (which I can't say anything bad about) or Trilogy of Knowledge.

Someone mentioned Veni Domine's epic effort. I'm so disappointed. I saw the album once and was going to buy it but decided to wait. Now I can't find it anywhere.
