Hello everybody,
I want to thank Andrew Garinger for posting about getting screwed by a
bootlegger. There's nothing that irritates me more than when someone promises
to give you merchandise and doesn't deliver. If you ever have that experience
when trading with me, you have my permission to publicly flame me until your
fingers fall off. People like Sue give the rest of us who do dubs for people
a bad name. This helps me too because if I ever run across her in my trading
circles, I'll know better. Plus, I'm notifying everyone I trade with that she
is a dishonest trader. Between me and the people I know around the country,
she'll have a hard time finding anyone else to rip off. Thanks again for the
warning.

I didn't want to put down Vanden Plas. I think they're great, too.
just was surprised that someone from Lyon has heard about them. I thought
they were just some sort of local rock band. BTW their Lead singer
Andy Kunz played the role of Eddie in the Rocky Horror Picture Show
in Saarbruckens Staats Theater. Didn't see it but must have been great.
Still I don't get the meaning of that sentence 'if you are just interested...
you don't listen to many bands' ?!?

Hi again everybody...
I wanted to make it perfectly clear to everyone here that I did NOT
volunteer myself to be in charge of the hypothetical petition/boycott
campaign I described on the jam a couple days ago. Sorry!
I'm glad people are psyched about the idea and it's cool to see such a
positive response on the jam and in my mailbox, but I regretfully decline
the "nomination" to be in charge of the whole project. Before you all start
calling me a wuss for getting everybody pumped up and then backing out
of it, consider the following: 1) I don't have cable (ergo, I don't see MTV
very often); and 2) I don't have usenet access. I think those 2 factors
effectively rule me out as far as organizing the project is concerned.
It would be cool to see how far we could get with this, and I really hope
someone steps forward and grabs the reigns. I'd be more than happy to
help mastermind the effort and am eager to do as much as possible to
make it work... we might not be able to bring about an all prog-rock video
network, but if we do it right I'm convinced we can at least make a statement,
raise an eyebrow, plant a seed, or maybe even set a precedent for other
"net-revolts" in the future. That's worth something, isn't it?
Hmmmm. DT content.
OK, I guess this qualifies:
Here's a cool way to kill some time and possibly meet some fellow DT-heads.
Go to a music or electronics store... find the keyboard section...
walk up to a demo setup... and start learning DT stuff. Once you master a
riff and find a decent-sounding patch, crank it up! It's exhilirating. If
the store is in a mall and really busy (like now, during the holiday season),
the salespeople won't bug you for at least half an hour :). What FUN! I've
learned riffs from a great many DT songs just by hanging out at Nobody Beats
the Wiz and banging on a cheap Casio for a while. Guess you all can tell I
don't own a keyboard and am very, very easily entertained.
Anyway, gotta run. I've been lurking on this list for 2 and a half years,
and now I talk too much. :)

I had a bad idea, apparently. I guess Trevor Rabin is really a putz and
has no business being a musician with the attitude that he has. Too bad for
him. Dream Theater would have been a good vehicle for him to use his musical
talent. But, if he has an ego, he doesn't belong ANYWHERE!!!
DT should NOT do away with keyboards. The keys are a required element
if a band wants to grow bigger. I have seen many area garage bands try to
write using just guitarists and they all start to sound like Mountain or Def
Leppard. Not that that is a bad thing, mind you. When they try to hire
keys, many bands get disappointed by the fact that if they do find a player,
he doesn't stay in the band long enough to expand their music.
Keyboard players are a rare thing in the Cleveland area. They get
cocky, that is, they say, "More money, or I leave to join a REAL band".
Assholes....
Does this sound personal? It isn't. Dream Theater should keep Derek
and continue to write more excellent songs. Long ones and short (under 5
minute) ones.
A brief touch on eMpTyV. I say, to HELL with them. Take their news,
their views, their videos and shove 'em. Just play episodes of the MAXX and
Aeon Flux. Two very good cartoons (imo).

OK, quick history lesson for people that are too closed-minded to get facts
before trashing someone....
When Trevor Rabin hooked up with Chris Squire, Alan White, and Tony Kaye,
there was no Steve Howe (No guitarist) and no Jon Anderson (No vocals)...
..Yeah, Chris can sing... somewhat... but he doesn't have lead vocal quality.
When Trevor joined, they were going to name the band _Cinema_
(See, they did want to change it)
They recorded most of 90125 with Trevor doing lead vocals. Towards the end of
the sessions, they got a visit from Jon Anderson. After some conversation,
Jon said he would like to be a part of the project and offered to do the
vocals. He did. Chris and Jon said "Well, since we're together again like
this, why don't we just call the band Yes?" Some of the original versions
of the songs from 90125 (When they were Cinema) are in the boxed set, and
they're really not too bad!
On his solo album, Trevor played guitar and did the lead vocals. He also
played some of the drum, bass and keyboard tracks. He's pretty adept.
He also wrote the string section that is the intro to 'Love Will Find a Way'.
Pretty good, huh?
If you can't stand to listen to Trevor Rabin because he doesn't write and
sound exactly like Steve Howe, that's just plain silly. If you like Steve
Howe so much, then just listen to his work. I don't think Trevor Rabin ever
had the intention of being a Steve Howe clone!
Would you want James to try and be a clone of Charlie (some of you might).
Would songs like Surrounded, Take the Time, and Wait for Sleep be the same
if he did? I think James has a very powerful voice with it's own unique
qualities. I, for one, am glad he doesn't try to be a clone. I rather
like his style.
Well, I guess I'm done ranting...
I hope I've opened some minds...
And it's OK if you don't like someone's work. Everyone is entitled to
their opinions. Just know the facts before you trash away!
Oh, by the way...

My 'puter crashed completely yesterday morning. I knew it was terminally
ill, and I was hoping it'd survive another two weeks until I went home for
Christmas, but alas, it choked out its last breath. Needless to say, I am
sans AOL account until my mother fixes it - and if it's what she thinks it
is (a fucked up motherboard), it could be a while. I'm hoping she can
salvage whatever's on the hard drive if it has to be reconstructed, because
I have a backup of ONE file, and if she can't save it, I'm going to lose
damn near a meg of stuff on my word processor alone. :(
Fortunately, a friend of mine has AOL and I will be able to check my email
through his computer periodically, but just to warn those of you that
communicate with me via AOL, you'd probably be better off writing to me here
at vwc.edu - at least until the 13th, which is the day I go home. If the
computer's not fixed by then, I will be vanishing until it is...

i have an idea for promoting DT. But first i need to get some opinions.
IF the Acoustic dreams dubbers, IF Mike Bahr, and IF the Ytsejam population
in general give their approbation, i was thinking of offering dub of AD on
other related mailling list (the extreme and King's X ml) where DT seems
to be appreciated.
I choose those two mailling list because they are friendly when compared to
the Rush and Queensryche(alt.rec-) groups.
I think we can get a couple of new DT fan with this project.

Hey, thanks for the nice friendly tone in your letter sent to our
nice, friendly list. I believe my post went something along the
lines of "I really like James singing, he's one of my favorite
singers. The only small complaint I would have is that he overdoes
the breathing and breathiness in his singing". Gee, I really
deserved to be flamed for hating LaBrie! Excuse me while I light my
propane torch ....
Any emotional quality that gets overdone becomes stale and
unemotional, or cliched. And sloppiness can be used effectively at
times, but not so frequently.

About the MTV thing:
I, personally, don't want to take the time to boycott MTV
advertisers. Maybe there's a product that I really, reallay like. I don't

What if Prog DID start getting played on MTV? Did you ever think
that maybe MTV can't play any band intamately? Especially a prog band?
They want one for a possesion, something to look at like a painting , or an
ivory box. They don't want it to think, and to live. They don't love them.
But WE love them. We want them to have their own thoughts, and ideas and
feelings, even as we have them in our CD players. It's their last chance.
Anyways, if it DID start getting played, it could get OVER played,
then millions of bands will copy it and everything will start to sound the
same, ala alternative music. That, IMH,PSO (IN my humble, possibly stupid
opinion) would suck.

I am resonding to the two recent posts, the first by Andrew
Garinger.
My name was mentioned in his post, and it does in fact appear that
I have been screwed.
I send a tape and a few $ (for extra tapes) to Sue a while back.
We exchanged e-mail messages for some time and everything seemed ok. Then
a few days ago, I tried e-mailing her again and got the message returned
saying that address had been deactivated.
I then posted to the Jam asking her to e-mail me. Then Andrew
sent me a message saying he'd been scammed by her.
I still have my doubts about whether or not I should post this, in
case it is just a misunderstanding. However, the fact that this also
happened to Andrew makes me begin to think it was a scam.
Therefore, if Susan (or whatever your name is) is out there and
you did not scam me, write me so we can work this out.
In either case, I would advise others not to trade with anyone by
that name since it appears as though it was a scam at this point.
If it was a scam, it is likely that she changed her name (as well
as her e-mail), so keep a look out for this mailing address:

Hey Clinton, I couldn't agree with you more. Berklee is much more than a
"jazz" school. It's a school that specializes in modern music production,
rock, and anything else in between. I'm a music major myself studying second
year theory and Berklee is where I plan to go. I'd like to study jazz but
still play rock, metal, classical, and blues. I also truly believe that if DT
wanted to they can pull off a full set of jazz tunes in a matter of a couple
of hours. Petrucci's solo in the "Live in Tokoyo" is amazing! It really
doesn't sound like a metal guitar player trying to play jazz. Instead, it
sounds like something in the realms of Joe Pass or the great Chet
Atkins,perhaps. I think that Berklee did a lot for them. I had the
opportunity to see them live in Hollywood at The Palace during the Awake tour
and all I can say is AMAZING!!!! Actually, words cannot even describe how
great they are. For instance, the end of "Take the Time" had a very
atmospheric improv with JP soloing with much FEEL! It was kinda of like a
David Gilmour meets Steve Vai and Steve Morse. That's just one of the little
snippets of the show. I'd like to say hello to all of the fellow Jammers. You
guys rule! I'd also like to discuss the theory aspects of DT's music just so
I can get a better understanding of how they come up with the great music. I
can also prove to all of the close minded classical people in my music theory
class that DT's music isn't just a bunch of noise. Their music is very
complex and contains the same virtuosity needed in jazz or classical. So if
there are any jammers who know a bit about DT's music, I'd like to hear from
you.

P.S. Dream Theater sounds great the way they are. They don't need another
guitarist. That would ruin their sound. James is a great singer and every DT
song is a good song.

i've been reading up on past jams, and it just occured to me that
one idea has been showing up a lot lately: many don't appreciate dt because
they don't understand it. this seems to especially be the idea with
LeBrie's vocals - people tend to not like them because they don't understand
them.
to me, this seems pretty obnoxious. one does not need to understand
music to appreciate it. i have absolutely no knowledge of how vocals "work"
musically, yet i enjoy LaBrie's voice immensely. in fact, my musical
knowledge amounts to slightly more than squat, but i still love dt. it
suddenly seems to me that many members of the jam are trying to make
themselves feel better about loving a band that essentially no one else like
by saying "Oh, well, everyone else isn't smart enough to understand." this
pisses me off.
yes, dt have endless musical skill. but the music is not an
academic pursuit! it's emotional! it's art, for god's sake, not a question
of bizzare time signatures and repeated melodies and blazing 64th notes.
you can't sit there and say dt is above the enjoyment of the musically
ignorant, because they aren't at all. i completely admire the extreme
talent the members of dt posses, but all of that skill is secondary to the
emotional impact a song has.
i think a lot of people need to ease up with the idea that dt are good
because of their ability to play rather than what their music expresses.
don't ever tell me that people don't like the way Labrie sings because "they
don't understand it." that, in short, is bullshit.
intelligent response is greatly desired.
