If you want to try Fates, get the new compilation album,
_Chasing Time_. It is a *very good* representation of where
Fates has gone, starting from an almost Maidenesque metal-
band, to where they are today---- very mature and interesting
to listen to. My only gripe is that the album _Perfect Symmetry_
is *way* underrepresented, but the CT almost maxes out as far ^
as time goes, so it's not too bad. If you can't find CT, |
go for _Parallels_ ('91?), probably their most consistant |
work (some parts of it are very subtile, though), or PS ('89)--|
which is a little rougher, but it is the first album I got,
and is considered by most Fates fans to be their best (this or
    ||s). The recent _Inside Out_ is pretty good, too. Try to
find CT, though, and you can go from there if you like it.

Fates can be slightly more mellow than DT, but Zonder is a
drummer who's up there with Portnoy, though his style is more
subtile. The twin guitar leads (esp. on ||s) are really
fantastic---- a Fates trademark. I think Fates is one of the
best bands that never hit it big, for some reason. I'd put them
    on par with Queensryche.

    Good luck,

    Zach

Hey. I've been talking with a couple of you on IRC, and I had an idea.
Those of us that live in the LI/Queens/Brooklyn area should try to get
together a few days before the Malibu show. This way, we can get to know
each other before the YtseCon and the show, and we'll probably have a
better time because of it. Interested? E-mail me privately.

hi, this is my three hundredth and fourty first post ever,
so sorry if I make any mistakes...
and I just hafta start by saying that DT RULZ!!!
    =)

On Mon, 4 Dec 1995 thus spake LESNIEBD@udmercy.edu:

    >
    > "Move over....I said Move Over!
    > Hey hey hey, clear the way!"

hmm, I'll take a wild guess here and say Queen...
just for fun I'll try to name the song...
    erm...Princes of the Universe?...
    =)

in other news, several weeks ago I got
    Enchant's 'Blueprint of the World'
..after letting it sink in for a while,
I feel obligated to recommend this disc to just about everyone here...
      a brief description:
    the drummer is Very Good;
    he appears to have the same sensibilities as does Mike Portnoy;
that is, he hits things other than his snare on beats,
    and has a variety of fills, and is simply Interesting in General;
the singer has a likeable voice,
    which is very good (altho not up to kjl's standards, of course);
    keys,bass and guitars are decent;
and the compositions are really quite good...
..probably one of my faves of this year.

for those of you to whom this means something:
Enchant would be classified as neo-prog

for those of you who need comparisons:
    I would have to say a cross between Rush and DT;
    (more accurate would be Cairo and DT;
the guitar sound/style is eerily similar to Cairo's)

    hope this interests someone,
    and good luck finding it...

hello all. this is the piece i mentioned before, it's called "voicepiece".
written by christopher hobbs in 1967. try it. have fun with it.

    david the magical kobayashi

    VOICEPIECE
Voicepiece is for any number of vocalists (not necessarily trained singers),
and lasts for any length of time. Each performer makes his own part,
following the instructions below. it may be found desiarble to amplify the
vocal noises, since it is difficult to vary the amplitude of these
predominantly quiet sounds. Any of the other sounds may be amplified.
Loudspeakers should be placed around and among the audience. The performers
should sit in the auditorium, and may move around freely during the
performance. The piece may take place in the darkness, in which case each
performer will need a small torch by which to read his part.

    DETERMINATION OF EVENTS
Open a telephone directly at randon, and begin reading at the top of the left
hand page. Read only the first four figures of each number. Each set of four
figures constitutes one event. As many sets are read will provide a programme
of actions to fill the time available for the performance. Read down the
    page, omitting no numbers.

    INTERPRETATION OF THE NUMBERS
The first of the four figures in a set refers to various types of sound
production, according to the following system-
Figure 1 indicates sining with words. The words may be in any
language, and any dialect. Use any literature from which to contain texts,
except these instructions. Do not invent your own text. The literature, and
thus the language, etc., may be changed any number of times during the course
of a performance but such changes should be made between, not during events.
Figure 2 indicates singing, without words. The note(s) may be sung to
any sound provided that the mouth is open for their production.
Figure 3 indicates humming (mouth closed).
Figure 4 indicates whistling. If you cannot wgistle use instead any
one vocal noise other than described in figures 6-8.
Figure 5 indicates speech. The remarks in figure 1 apply here also.
Very quiet speech may be interpreted as whispering, very loud speech as
    shouting (see below)
Figure 6, 7 and 8 indicate voals produced with the lips, throat and
    tongue respectively.
Figure 9, indicates a vocal noise produced by any means other than
those described above, eg. with the cheeks.
Figure 0 indicates any vocal sound not included in the above
    categories, eg. screaming.

The second of the four figures in a set refers to the duration of text.
0 is very short, 9 is very long. The other numbers represent roughly equal
gradations between these extremes. Each event may contain any number of
sounds of any duration, depending on the overall duration of the event. The
sounds may be made at any point within the event, with or without silence
    preceeding and/or succeeding the event.

The third of the four figures in a set refers to pitch and amplitude. 0
is very low/very quiet, 9 is very high/very loud. Both these charcteristics
will apply only in a general way to the event. Not all the sounds in an event
need be very high and very loud or whatever. Pitch and amplitude will apply
in different degrees to the various sounds. Its categories 1-4, pitch is the
primary consideration, and in general, amplitude will follow on from it. it
is, for examplevery difficult for an untrianed singer to produce extreme low
sounds at anything other than a very low amplitude. in categories 5-9,
amplitude is more easily varied, especially if amplification is available,
and pitch should left to take care of itself.

The fourth figure of the set refers to silence after an event. 0 is no
silence, 1 a very short pause, and so on. 9 represents a very long silence.

    Jon:

I think you have that backwards. The absence of God exists only in the
mind of non-spiritual humans. One must realize we have at least 3
areas of growth in our lives they we need to nurture.

    1. Physical - We need to eat healthy foods and excersize to support and
allow out bodies to grow and stay healthy and enjoy and active
       physical life.

    2. Mental/Emotional - We need to mature as we grow older, become less
"me" oriented. We are all preoccupied with ourselves from birth,
change my diaper feed me etc..) We need to learn mental disipline
and consideration of others needs. We go the schools of higher
learning so we can become viable contributers to society and become
gainfully employed. During the process we hopefully learn that
Love is life and hate is death. Learning to Live, have you heard
       that song? :)

    3. Spiritual - This is an area a lot of people overlook. We by nature
are spritual beings and have a need (though some of us suppress it),
to understand life beyond the natural. The natural being what we
can hear, see, smell, feel, and taste. The easy thing for us to do
is to ignore the signs that there is a God, but if you look and not
to hard they are very obvious. The signs of the existance of God is
beyond the scope of my commentary. Even one of our favorite bands
writes about the existance of God. You may say you are an atheist
but I KNOW deep down in your soul (unless you're not human) that you
know there is a higher power. In WFS "God give me the power...."
and there are other references that John P. makes as well. If we
don't nurture our spiritual person we will be spiritually dead.
Just as if we don't take care of our bodies we will die physically.
I could write much more on this note but I don't want to loose
       readership and I hope I haven't already.

I was once an atheist, but obviously that's changed. I've spent a
lot of time pondering the existance of God and to turn my head to
what life has shown me in regard to the living God would be
utter foolishness. I'll be glad to mail you my testimony if your
interested (I'm still working on it for other jammers who are
interested. I posted this to the jam because I don't want it to be
       seen by your eyes only.

For those of you who may think I'm preaching - I'm not, I'm teaching
       PLEASE make the distinction.

       God Bless You All,

       Michael C.

P.S. Jon do you celebrate Christmas or acknowledge Easter?

                                  INTRODUCTION
Okay...I haven't died for those of you who wondered, I have just been VERY
VERY VERY busy w/ the YtseCon, finals, papers (of which you will see more on
this subject later), my quartet and work. I apologize for not updating you
    sooner!

Another reason I haven't updated you sooner is that nothing new has really
happened. We are totally waiting on DT's answer. I am about tired of
waiting for them though and think that I may try to go through management
after all. So if you have any names and numbers of people to contact,
    please send them to me!

    ============================================================================
    ========
                                    YtseCon II Update
    ============================================================================
    ========

    So far:

We have about 65 people who say they want to attend the YtseCon II
tentatively scheduled for Dec 28th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Rockville
Center Holiday Inn in Rockville, NY (about 15 mins from Malibu) at a cost of
about $5-$15 depending largely on the number of people attending and several
    other things listed below.

                            --------YtseCon II options-----------
    (options 1 and 2)
The Hotel's banquet room can either be rented by us for around $300 (I think
I can get it a little cheaper cause they mis-quoted me the first time!) or
it can be USED for free with a per person charge of about $7.50 a head
including coffee/hot chocolate and pastries ect. We could also go for more
of a finger food thing w/ fruit, cookies, cheese/crackers, sodas ect for
like $15 a head. I know this seems very expensive, but its the going rate
and wont be found for cheaper anywhere.

If your thinking that we can just rent the room and bring in food they wont
allow it. So I guess we'll have to get dinner before or run through a drive
through on the way to the show @ about 7:10.

    (option 3)
I really want to get some T-shirts made for the YtseCon. They would be
fairly similar to the ones that Jason Giles did. I was planning to use
white ink on a shirt color of the purchasers choice with some writing of
YtseCon II (date, place, "Internet mailing list", "ytsejam@arastar.com" ect)
on the pocket and a big (correctly proportioned) Majesty symbol on the
back...right below the words (the way they write them) "Dream Theater".
These would be great to give to DT! The price for these ----AT 36 OR MORE
ORDERS----- is about $7 a peice. Not a bad price at all! But remember,
the more orders, the cheaper they are! So everyone who have freinds going,
ask them about their shirt orders also! Ohhhh, and don't worry about the
shirts being bad quality! I promise you will be just as happy w/ them as
Jason Giles' shirts (though these may not have the glow in the dark ink).

                         ----------------PROBLEMS-----------------
    1)
Okay...I'm gonna lay it all out for you...I am not going to invest $125 into
a most likely, non refundable banquet room if there is a chance that DT may
not be able to attend the Con. There would be no reason for us to have it
there if they weren't coming. We could jkust as easy hold it at a
resteraunt or something. So as of now I'm just going to wait on DT for
booking the room. But it needs to be done very soon... I am afraid that it
might get booked and this Holiday Inn is the only hotel close enough w/
    enough prestige for DT.

    2)
I need to know what you guys think about all the options...

Option 1) Rent room for $300. Eat dinner before or after YtseCon.
Option 2) Pay $7.50 per person including coffee/hot chocolate and assorted
pastries w/ no charge for the room itself.
Option 3) Have T-shirts made @ roughly $7 (Must be more than 36 orders) on any
               color shirt you choose.
Option 4) (My preference) Have the YtseCon price include the room + a shirt!
That way, the shirts would be about $6 and everyone could wear it
    to the
               show that night!

    3)
Is there any kind of copy writing laws that make it illegal to make shirts
like I described above? Normally I wouldn't care since I'm not making
profit off them, but since DT will see them and even get one, I don't know
if I should worry????? Help anyone????

            ----------------------LOW DOWN SCOOP!!----------------------------

We're waiting on DT to answer, but in the mean time, mail me about your
opinions on problem #3 (the options) and any other comments you have.
                                     ALSO
the following is the current list I have for the YtseCon II. If you ARE NOT
on that list and will be attending, -OR- if you are on the list and WILL
NOT be attending, mail me and let me know! --- I expect to be getting alot
    of mail!!!

well, i just had an idea. doesnt happen too often so pay attention.
at the three december shows, i will be DAT taping. "so fucking what?"
well, that means that i also have an extra analog tape deck that will
not be used. i might even be able to swing an extra DAT or two and some
nice mics. so if anyone of you that will be there wants to tape the
show you can borrow my surplus equipment and have at it. you can keep
the tape of course. i just figured some of you might want to see what
it is like to tape a show before buying the equipment, to see if you
like it. either way i will bring as much crap as i can, and we can
set people up in every corner of the places with tape rolling :)

the goal of taping shows is to make the music available to as many
people as possible at the best quality as possible at the least
cost, and i figured this woulld be a good way for one or two of you to
get a master tape of the shows instead of a higher gen copy later.
and best of all it is totally free (you gotta buy the blank tape, though,
i am not that generous) :)

I am sick and tired of it!

Months ago I mailed a message to the list to the list to the effect that I
would really like to get some kind of song-by-song description of what
interesting stuff is happening at which times in the song. And of late people
have been mentioning quintuples and sextuplets and I guess I have a hunch
what they are but I'd like to know *where* they are happening! I'd like to
know what is happening musically in all those songs, and from which CD song
time to which time. That would also make for an instant answer to an
interesting question such as "what is happening at x'xx" in 'Bombay
Vindaloo'" and stuff like that (which I think are really intelligent
questions). I am not talking tabs here, though it would perhaps be neat to
have directions for the appropriate tab files within the descriptions).
For a while I thought Ben and some other guys were undertaking this project
(and had started on "6:00"), but apparently not.
I think it should be an invaluable project for people on a mailing list for
as technically and musically brilliant a band such as Dream Theater.

Last but not least I'd like to tell you that Ytsejam is the only mailing
list that I am still not unsubscribing from after weeks of such intense
output. The Rush mailing list was 30 Kb per day and that was simply too long
for me. Ytsejam, however, is different. And I think it's people like Ben and
    Bafu that do it.

I don't know if this will be a thread or something, but I'm hereby supplying
my Top 10 of 1995. Not as a "my fave 10 albums of 1994", but as a list of
stuff I would want the whole world to check out.
If, on account of this Top 10, any of you feel I should check out a certain
album of a lesser known band, please feel free to suggest something!

    1. My Dying Bride - "The Angel and the Dark River" (MFN)
The best doom metal outfit that exists. Excellent album with moody
    compositions and great violin stuff.
    2. Orphanage - "Oblivion" (Displeased / DSFA)
Triple-voiced (grunt/female/normal) death metal. Dutch. Excellent.
    3. Septic Flesh - "Esoptron" (Holy Records)
Progressive melodic emotional doom metal from Greece. Wonderful. The only
thing that keeps it down a tad is the standard death metal kind of
    production.
    4. Dream Theater - "A Change of Seasons" (EP) (Warner)
Need I really say anything about this?
    5. Yngwie Malmsteen - "Magnum Opus" (MFN / Pony Canyon)
Great heavy stuff, only one ballad, and really good songs. As good as
"Seventh Sign", which was the best album since "Trilogy".
    6. Tristitia - "One with Darkness" (Holy Records)
Unique death metal vocals, with instrumental songs in-between. Slow and
    loud. Good stuff.
    7. Celestial Season - "Solar Lovers" (Displeased)
Grunts with two violins and keys, and really heavy doom stuff. Effing A!
    8. The Gathering - "Mandylion" (Century Media)
Really melodic, used to be doom metal but now only have female vocals,
    hauntingly eerie. Dutch band. Good!
    9. Nightfall - "Athenian Echoes" (Holy Records)
Straight-in-the-face war metal from Greece. Quite prog, too, I guess.
    Aggressive and technically quite good.
    10. Paradise Lost - "Draconian Times" (MFN)
Not a surprising album but quite good. Those who liked "Icon" will like
this, although perhaps not at the first listen.

Special Spinal Tap runner-up (because there are only 10 in 10, and really
there ought to be 11) is "The Silent Enigma" by Anathema.

A definite potential thread: Fave song to be played at your funeral? Mine is
definitely "One" by Metallica (the unedited version, not the single version),
or "Fade to Black" (also by Metallica) if they can't find "One" :-)

     To Michael C.:

This is something I've wanted to write for so, so long, for a few months
actually. I am getting so god damn tired of all your condescending remarks
about people who use lightly (in your opinion) the word of god or whatever.
Take a break man, you irrirate hell out of me even by your inane "God bless,"
at the end of your every message. I don't believe in god or any god for that
matter, and I have valid reasons for that. I wish you would just see that
people who are not devote christians and all that have a complete different
use of words. I use "christ" and "heavens" sometimes but they have no
religious meaning whatsoever. It sounds silly to say "buddha, that music
    sucks". It's idiomatic.
I wish very much for you to shut up completely in god-related matters.
You're like a jack-in-the-box, popping up to defend christian morale and
everything even *loosely* attached to it at the *slightest provocation*.
Don't you realise that you're predictable and boring? Gee, man, if only your
signature was at the beginning of your messages I'd know what to skip right
    away.
I think the bible is just a badly written fantasy fiction novel, but I
realise that there are people who see more in it. I respect that. You always
go on about the fact that we ought to respect your opinions and beliefs, and
we do. But why don't you respect ours? Who are you to say how we should
behave in religious or non-religious matters? Who are you to say that, should
any of us say "God sucks", that person is wrong? Why do you think people who
say rather un-religious things have any need to hear what you think of it?
Religion is, like music, a matter of taste. Some people watch eMpTyV, some
don't. Some people wear flares, some don't. Some people are religious, some
aren't. Lighten up, dude. Live and let live. All those messages you're
sending actually didn't stick to me for DT content but merely for religious
stuff. This is not the Godjam or anything. If you're right about all this I
will fry in hell. If I am right, however, you will have lived your life a
self-righteous silly person. Most likely, we are both wrong and I will fry
in hell *and* you will actually turn out to have lived your life a silly
    person.
Then again, who am *I* to say this? After all, your opinion is as valid as
mine. Just keep your opinion in non-DT related matters *off* the flipping
Digest! I can assure you I will keep my non-religious opinions off the digest
in the future, too. Surely, not a soul is interested in it.
It's just that I was almost getting angry because of all that self-righteous
condescendence. I had to write this and shoot my load.

(currently listening: Orphaned Land's "Sahara", excellent prog death metal -
I guess - from Israel, with Arab scales aplenty and beautiful compositions)

    Hi there Ytsejammers,

I subscribed to ytsejam a few weeks ago and this is the first time
I'm sending a mail. I don't have to tell you what my favourite band
is and it's certainly not Blind Melon ;) so I won't bother you with
    that.

During those few weeks I've been reading a lot about DT and other
Prog-Metal bands in this mailing list but I haven't seen anything
about Psychotic Waltz and Abstrakt Algebra. OK, Abstrakt Algebra
isn't a very big band, YET, but they sound really great. They are
    from Sweden, I think.

If you don't know them, CHECK THEM OUT!!!
If you DO, please, let me know what you of them.

    About Psychotic Waltz:
I can't believe that there isn't anyone who doesn't know them!
Do you all hate their music? I love them, so let me know what you
    think, OK?

Furthermore I would like to know if someone can help me to find a
dubsite for the Acoustic Dreams and Subconscious CD's. Unfortunately
I subscribed too late to be able to get a copy of these CD's.
I would prefer a dubsite in Europe (The Netherlands would be even
    better!)

How can I get hold of the Kevin Moore Demos (also in Europe)?

    Please help me out here

Danny 'Dutch dude' van Lent (currently studying in Manchester, UK)

P.S. I hope you all don't disapprove of my way of mailing (I'm new,
you know). If you DO, let me know personally and I'll change the
way of mailing. I wanna be a GOOD mailer ;)

Oh kewlie ! I just found out that a friend of mine has the
whole production (well almost) of King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd
            etc, etc...
Someone talked about that similarities engine here and I decided
to give it a spin. (It's at www.webcom.com/se). On the top ten
there was something like 6 Fates Warning albums =). And I knocked
them abit awhile ago! I just gotta get one for x-mas.
Add it all together 'n I'm gonna have busy holidays =)
