A million people are probably responiding to who played keyboards, but
since I'm such a Van Halen fanatic (Dream Theater is #2 on my list), I felt
obligated to answer. Eddie played keyboards during the 5150 tour, which
Live Without a Net is from. I'm not sure about the OU812 tour, but for the
rest of the tours after that the Keyboard parts were played through a
sequencer. So other than the old two guitar songs (ie, One Way to Rock,
Finish What You Started, ect...) Eddie took care of all the guitar on the
Balance tour......as well he should considering he's the greatest rock
guitar player to ever roam the Earth!

Right on. Although I dig wierd stuff (harmonic, melodic and rhythmic), it
still has to feel right. I'm working on a song now that has a bit that's 2
    bars of 7/4 then a bar of 4/4 then 11/16 (7/4 minus one 16th note or 27/16
but that seemed stupid to notate that way). It just turns out that the riff
needed to end on D on one of the next bar so I dropped a 16th. Not even
noticable. Odd times are cool but they should still feel good. DT is great
    at that, I think.

Just wanted to quickly apologize to the guy who made a comment about the
"breathiness" of James' vocals. Sorry man, didn't mean to jump down your
throat about it, I think I was a little low on caffeine at the time.
(This was immediately after I had just complained that some people on the
    list are too uptight. oops)

Here's an idea for a new thread (maybe)...
OK, let's imagine for a moment that the next DT album produces a REALLY
big single. They get lots of airplay on commercial radio and MTV, the album
goes platinum, and their listening audience expands tremendously, to the point
where they're able to do their first arena tour.

What do you imagine their stage show looking like? How might Dream Theater
go about making their live show "bigger-than-life" visually? Hmmm. It's
something to think about. I envision the backdrop consisting of a gigantic
Majesty logo, with huge video screens on either side... on the screens, they
could show little film clips (like Queensryche, Floyd, etc) and they could
have camera people zooming in on John, John, Mike and Derek during solos and
instrumental breaks like in the video for "Take the Time". The things they
could do with smoke, lighting, etc. to accent the music would be incredible.
Of course, during Mike's solo, his drum kit could rise off the platform and
start spinning upside down, then James could pick up a laser cannon and blow
the head off a 12-foot-tall walking corpse, then a miniature replica of
Stonehenge could come down from above, yeah, and then these dwarves could
come out on stage and start dancing around, yeah, yeah, that would *rule*!!!
Yeah, then John P. could set his guitar on fire and smash it, Derek could
start spitting blood into the audience, and John Myung.... Sorry, got a
    little carried away. :)

But seriously, folks, what do ya think?

Sammy does play on "Love Walks In" and "Why Can't This Be Love", but I
remembered that he also plays on "I Can't Drive 55", too.

OK, DT content: Do any of the keys players on the 'jam know what synths
Kevin Moore used on the LiT video and presumably I&W and Awake? He covers
over the logos on the back of the synths with gaffer tape, so I can't
    tell.

I was just thinking, since a lot of people are talking about adding another
guitarist to the band, wouldn't it be cool if Ty Tabor from King's X played
with them? I wouldn't want that to happen because I love King's X but he
would be a good compliment to John. They could probably trade lead with
each other. I'd love to hear DT do a King's X cover like Black Flag or
Don't Care or Willow(or is it Pillow, I always forget that, sorry if I got
it wrong), or maybe Mission. It would be hard though because of all the
harmonies KX does. Why don't any of the DT guys sing back-up? Ok, later
    jammers.

With all the recent talk of Berklee School of music (or whatever it is
called), I couldn't help but comment on it. I remember a while back some
people talking about the band Helmet and the overall view I percieved was
that most people didn't really like them. Well I am pretty sure that lead
guitarist, vocalist Page Hamilton is a graduate of Berklee, and happened
to study jazz there. I have no idea if the riffs he plays are jazzy
since I know not a thing about music theory.

Just thought I would share this little piece of information with
    everyone.

    Hey Jammers,

Sorry for the caps in the title, but worthless, conniving people like her really get to me. As for the mixup between names....it was "GMSKING@AOL.COM" not "GHSROCKER". He is a good friend of mine and also had the sam
e problems with her, if not worse.

He sent her a copy (from his original recording) of a Mike Portnoy drum clinic on LI as well as other DT bootlegs. She claimed to have really old Queensryche, Watchtower, some great King Diamond stuff, and even Crimso
n Glory (which I have tracked down by now anyway, but thats not the point). Luckily, he only sent out half the shipment and waited for her to send hers.
After weeks, he finally e-mailed her and she had the NERVE to tell him that he was annoying and to stop harassing her!!!! He e-mailed her again (always keeping a courteous tone I might add) asking why she was so evas
ive and she writes all this stuff that if even tries to show up at her doorstep, her husband will break his legs. He was like, "What the hell is this shit!?!?!?!?"
Now that I have seen other people get burned by her, it just angers me even more that people like this are given free access to everyone's honesty. I honestly feel like calling up information for her phone number and
having some fun at 3 in the morning claiming to be the "Official Bootleg Police" or something. Man..it just BURNS ME UP!!!!!!

Anyhow....whoever posted this about considering legal action...e-mail "GMSKing@aol.com" ......he's my friend who got burned by her and will definitely have some choice words about her!
Also.....DO NOT TRADE WITH JOHN HALE!!!He lies like there is no
tomorrow!!!!! And that list about all the "bad traders" sounds GREAT!!!
How about everyone posting more names..(like that guy Anish Batia or
    something????
    )
Ohh well, I guess I vented my anger pretty good. Off to get ready
    for finals week.
       Trade responsibly everyone!!

    cheers,
      Carlo

    FUN FACTS:

A new WDATU/Limited Edition CDs update will be rearing its ugly head Wednesday or Thursday. I try to put them together on a weekly basis so as to keep people well-informed. The orders for WDATU are comin' in MIGHTY fast, and I'm glad I'll be doing a run of 1000 to make sure there are enough for all. I can pretty much guarantee it will sell out. Thanks to EVERYONE who has been a part of these things. If there were nobody who was interested in my CD creations, it wouldn't work out too well. :)

On a similar note, since WDATU is already ordered, the label will say "Majesty" like Acoustic Dreams did. I am planning on doing the Antiquities liners MYSELF however, with my new color laser printer and scanner, so it should say "Dream Theater" and have correct liner notes. The CD itself will remain anonymized. I will experiment in this manner with Antiquities, and if you like the old covers better (qualitywise... a printing plant can do far better than a poor old printer) then I'll switch back.. but I am thinking it will still be high enough quality.

Also, someone asked if they can offer AD dubs to people on other mailing lists. The answer is an unconditional Yes. Once a CD I offer sells out, there's no more chance for people to get the special original CDs, and yet the music itself can live on through trading and copying. I authorize anyone and everyone to trade as they wish with the contents of Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams. I suppose selling it is OK too, but don't get carried away. I'm not the sort of guy who would pursue someone who was selling copies. But the rest of the net community might not think too highly of it, and I'm a believer in capitalism where the public votes with their wallets. :)

Finally, I was pretty impressed with that comeback win by the Dolphins today... they're one of those teams that ya just gotta like, even if you're in another city, UNLESS your favourite team is one of their division rivals. :) Miami, and in the same manner, San Francisco, Carolina, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Seattle are all very fun teams to watch. I can't put my finger on why, but it's true. And that's even considering they all usually beat the Arizona Cardinals, the team I hope one day will taste at least a LITTLE success. Hey, I live here. They're the hometown team. How can ya blame me. :) Oh yeah, the SUNS rule! (except that this season, they sorta suck. I'll cheer for 'em anyway.)

Thanks everyone and now back to your reguarly scheduled Jam.

Mike Bahr, durnik@indirect.com Oh yes, I tried to get on IRC #ytsejam, but I kept getting kicked off and couldn't figure out why. Sort of rude if you ask me.

While Big Generator might not give you some good Yes music, Union may hold something for you since in addition to the 80s Yes lineup, Howe, Bill Bruford, (spell checker please) and Rick Wakeman also did work on that album. In addition, you may want to check out the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman Howe CD and the Evening of Yes Music Plus double CD. The last gives some great versions of And You and I, Heart of the Sunrise, Roundabout, Close to the Edge and Long distance Runaround. Overplayed Yes, I know, but they sound Great.

Well, I am not totally sure what synthesizers Kevin used on the LIt video, I didn't see it yet. But why in hell would you cover the logos on your gear. That's like hiding your guitar so that nobody knows what it is. Come on.

HAA! You saw them in France? Yes, I know, they're touring there. I know them personally because their practice-room is next to ours and they're friends of me and my band SUPERIOR. Nice to hear some news about them here on the jam. :-)

Hi everyone, this is my first time writing so if I say anything wrong, I am already sorry! Kyle, I have some answers for you. I am a music major and have a lot of focus in all of the areas you are asking about. You can breathe while singing. It is a technique known as circular breathing. It involves inhaling through the nose while exhaling (or singing depending on if you are singing or playing an instrument) through the mouth. If anyone cares to try it it will immediately become evident that it is extremely difficult. I have been playing for over fifteen years (not long in the general scheme of things for a musician) but I have only met one person who can do it. I have been to many of the better schools in the country (I am at one now!) and have found that very few people are even taught how to do it because it is nearly impossible. I have been taught but well, I can't say a lot for it! I also need to disagree with you on a point that was made. From my experience, both emotion and technical ability are very important. HOWEVER, there is a time and place for everything. Many amateurs (myself included) will often try to be emotional during difficult technical runs. Unfortunately, this results in a loss of the technical power. Often, if someone tries to do both when one happens to be particularly hard, they both lose out. Of course, there is a matter of how much talent each person has. A very experienced player can often times incorporate both into one thing while an amateur can not be strong when using both. Thus, there has to be a relationship between the two but there are times and places when one or the other need to prevail to be the most effective. I think that LaBrie has found a happy medium, so to speak, between the elements. In my biased opinion, he is absolutely amazing. I realize there is a lot of people behind the scenes who make major contributions to his sound but his talent is unreal. As is the rest of the group! They are very popular most of the places I go because I am dealing with musicians. I agree with the comment someone made in the last mailing (I am sorry I don't remember who it was) about appreciating DT's music. While anyone can (and all should!) part of the appeal is the depth. There is so much going on. There is so much for the ear to hear and the understanding of the talent that lies behind it all is just amazing. Whether you know what is going on or not it is clear that they don't bother with anything that wouldn't test their abilities and thus they grow with every new thing they do and learn from all the old. Okay, I realize this is long and I apologize for it but hey, once I get going about DT it is hard to stop. Kyle, I hope this gave you some answers. Anyone else have any comments?

    devon townshend?!?!?! uggghh!!

at best, i would have to say that he has his moments. i don't know why he gets so much praise, and it would be inane to even think he would make a fine dt voice replacement. i mean, although i personally don't think that james is the weak link of the band (they all have fucked up- oh well!), and i think it's fine if one of you thinks so, but if you're talking replacements, devon townshend?? come ON!!! you might as well hire courtney love to sing on the next yes album, or weiland to sing with elp. no way does he fit or would he even sound remotely good. i'm glad that this is just a mere discussion, because if dt ever hypothetically joined dt, that's the day i put my music instruments and call it a life.

i don't want to sound so strong about this- i don't even really care, but some of the extremities being hurled around are scaring me.

re: trevor rabin. this is to NO ONE IN PARTICULAR, SO RELAX! am i one of the few who actually LIKES trevor rabin (no, that deosn't mean i think he should be in dt, either!). i mean it's obvious that the yes from 71-74 (yes album-close to the edge) is the best one. fine! but let's face it- that will never occur again (although i like "union", that doesn't count). there is some great stuff on talk, and what i've heard on the box set (i don't have 90125). sure it sounds different, but i think it's quite impressive. it just surprises that i hear all these remarks like "trevor sucks", and "trevor's songwriting sucks" when it appears to be the most logical thing for yes to do, with all the changes in lineup. and although the songwriting may be more pop-oriented, there are some bizarre sounds on the recordings that aren't pop-oriented. i still consider that "pushing the envelope."

let's stick with personnel changes and related stuff. someone tell why a band like pink floyd who's added/subtrated members a LOT in the last 3 albums can STILL be incredible (although gilmour is the main songwriter, i can imagine that the rest of his "band" has MUST have SOME input in the recordings), and yet elp, who have played with each other a good 25 years (excluding the era with powell and berry) record an album like "in the hot seat"? i got sick to my stomach when i heard that album. sick sick sick. alas.

i think i have now approached a time where i feel i am ready to listen to more "modern progressive" rock, such as fates warning, and galactic cowboys. i would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help me and suggest some "essential albums" to listen to (including fates and the cowboys). i must admit that i am starting with bad conceptions of this genre of prog- screamers hitting a above high c, shredders, billy sheehans, and over busy drummers. however, i want to erase that, and i hope i can get help from someone.

see ya. ct is right around the corner. matt (siriois), please send me info as well as to where people are meeting before that show. thanks.

What is it about christians that makes them feel that EVERY time someone says something about religion that they have to make a comment about it? I've been on this list for a few months now. I have seen opinions that don't agree with mine; but I don't feel the need to comment on every opinion that differs from mine. But when someone says something connected to religion, the Christians on this list go on forever about God or Jesus Christ. I'm not anti-religious or anti-christian. I just feel that there's a time and a place for that kind of discussion. Please settle down on the God talk so I don't feel the need to start quoting Allistaire Crowley or Mercyful Fate.

For those of you that have ordered videos of the Japan PPV show, I'm sending them out Monday morning. This list is of people I have received money from and am sending out tapes for. If you sent money out to me and are not on this list, your request is probably still in the mail.

Thanks for your orders. Let me know what you thought of the tape.

It's time to say a few words about #ytsejam. It's a lot easier to have a fun, casual conversation in #ytsejam about DT, the weather or anything else that strikes our fancy (yea, even Christian content in DT songs or how religious John P. really is) when users and bots (like YtSeJaM) aren't mucking around with channel operator privileges, banning people, kicking them off the channel, etc.

Last night an argument erupted between Ben L. and Eric (Nuggetman) Moegling. Both had legitimate gripes:

Ben is too quick to play around on IRC with op privileges (inviting people from other channels in just to kick them off and laugh about it is an 8-yr. old's prank, not a 13-yr. old's).

The bot in #ytsejam, handled by Eric M., is too quick to kick people and ban them, and has an annoying habit of kicking people off when they're waiting for others to show up in the channel. For an example of a well-handled and well-programmed IRC 'bot, see RushServ in #p/g!.

All this let's-play-god-in-our-own-sandbox crap might be fun, but some of us would really like to chat. Remember? Internet Relay Chat? It's not Internet Relay Abuse. If we all can remember that, and stay cool, we'll have a happier time.

    --Paul experienced IRC'er, and 'retired' (!?) #p/g!'er.

Incidentally, Ben really doesn't owe ME an apology.... I've seen far worse on IRC from adults, really.

I had some queries about a Rubber Stamp of the Dream Theater logo used when I s-mail people, or when Neil sends Images and Words. These are made by Helen Hill who makes a lot of stamps and stationery for Queen fans. She made the DT logo stamps specially for me. If anyone would like one this is what I suggest: The cost would be 7 dollars including postage, that is made up from 3.50 UK pounds for the stamp and 1 pound for the postage. If you are interested then please e-mail me with your smail address. I will mail you my address. I will order the stamp for you from Helen and send her your address. So Helen would send it direct to you. You would then send ME the 7 dollars in US dollar bills. Patricia
