Wonderful of course. So glad I have two more to look forward to.
Joe played most of the new album and all the old favourites
(brilliantly of course), new songs came over heavier than the
album. Great Stu Hamm country music solo (from RFA), good light
show, but who's watching that with Joe to see ? It snowed all
the way home (130 miles) but that did not matter. Patricia

How to kill the time while we wait for the new album ...

It looks like religious discussion is going to be the way we do it. Gosh,
this list lately makes me regret that I am such a devout atheist. It's
just not so satisfying preaching the joys of atheism to jesus-freaks.
I mean preaching self-thought against preaching a god--it's just not
    parallel enough, you see.

However, I am in the process of developing a Satanism by using the Bible
(by saying that Satan is what God is not). One day I will have written
a religious text which I will be able to quote at you, shout out in
    university parks, etc etc.

However, here's the real question for your evangelical Christians out
there: how would you feel if I started beating you over the head telling
you to follow Satan (I say follow not 'worship' notice). It'd make the
list pretty damn annoying for you, wouldn't it?

Now I won't do that because I have too much kindness for the non-evangelical
jammers out there. Now I know that this post violates that a little. I'm
a hypocrite. But you know what they say about "I know I'll never be like
you" ("I wouldn't be too sure").

But, just to create a rallying cry, let me state this for those who feel
as annoyed as me: Satanism is about rebellion, right? Well the Bringer
of Light is not going to enforce any sort of cheesy obedience such as
faith. He's in this for humans. So you don't have to believe.

You just gotta be pissed. It's not divine gluttony here, it's a war. If
you're pissed, give me a "HAIL SATAN."

    Hale-Bafuckin-luja.

(I wanna be remembered for something, for dog's sake. And going around
chanting SQUAAAH-WAAAAH ain't going to do it for me...it's been done.)

This is my first post ever after almost a year of lurking. This will
also probably be my last, because I am unsubscribing (Nothing personal
guys. The jam is great and I got a lot out of it, but I must move on).
I just wanted to take this opportunity to throw my two cents on the
    table.

There is a lot of bitching and moaning about what should be allowed
to be discussed on the jam. Some say that since this THE Dream Theater
forum, content should be restricted to DT only. Bull! This is a list
of DT fans, by DT fans, and for DT fans... including what interests
them. It is because of this list that I found out, and sought out
bands such as Savatage, Fates Warning, ...ect. People enjoyed them,
and shared their opinion on the jam so that other people could enjoy.
    Outstanding!!

There are also those who say that God should not be discussed. Why
not? What are you afraid of? If you don't believe, you don't believe.
No problem. If there are those of us who believe that there is some
aspect of God and Religion in some of the lyrics, then who are you to
demand that we cannot discuss this. Join the discussion and explain to
us why you believe we are wrong. I'll let you in on a secret: the
harder you bash us, the louder we proclaim our Faith.

One last thought: Never forget that the main focus is that we all
love and enjoy Dream Theater. With all our differences, we still have
that in common. Let's get along with each other.

Feel free to e-mail me since I won't see any response on the jam.

    Tom

    RELIGION:

It's getting really tiresome to read the debate on god so I thought I'd
step in and make the list even more of a bore. I hope that didn't make sense.

Preachy christians on the list, think about this: I've seen stated that
you are offended by atheists denying god. Ok. I'm just as offended when
christians tell me about their god being supreme, ruling all of us, our
fates. That god loves all and that we should all love him, he's created
us all etc. Before I'm knee-deep in shit (already?) let me just tell you
that I'm very offended by this dogmatic view. I'm the ONLY one
responsible for my past, present and future. Not really maybe, as I'm a
product of the society and people around me, but ultimately my fate is
solely in my own hands. If I fuck up (on any level) it's MY fault. If
religion is used as a way to escape responsibility of ones future, to
    hell with it.

Not being a christian is my own choice, no one told me what to do and
what not to. From all my experiences and all I have learned I've chosen
the atheist way. For myself i deny god. For anyone else, I respect their
way of looking at the world around them and their belief or trust in god.
Just don't force your belief onto me. Don't even bother. I refuse/resist.

    AD LINER NOTES:

I received my copy of AD two weeks ago and I must say I'm impressed. The sound quality of most of the tracks is superb. Very well done Mike!!! My fave trax is probably LSOAD, Tears and LIE, what a cool jam. Though it sounds like an instructional on 'how to swing' so I don't really know what I think about the idea of DT delving more into the jazz, funk side of things. That takes something very special, on the level of LIE however, that's just fine as a change.

My question is, exactly when, where and possibly why where the different songs recorded. Could you Mike, or someone with knowledge, assemble some liner notes. Where the recordings were done etc, just like the nice ones for Subcon sent to the jam. Not to bring the actual liner notes down but I need more details. I guess it's sort of an anal thing.

    --

    VIDEOS:

I think the DT videos is a real interesting topic that I'd like to discuss.

It's pretty general knowledge that Pull Me Under was recorded very cheap, and that the band use to laugh about the process, and wonder why it has got so much airplay when the later ones haven't.

Since DT is a 'perfect' type band, no wonder they want their products to be perfect. Ok, maybe I'm on a soap box here. Well, my favourite video is PMU because of the fact that it is RAW. It fits the song, no matter if the wolfman seem a little out of place. The rawness and blurry shots carry the feel and spirit of it all. DT made a very HEAVY impression on me when I first saw it back in 92.

The same way: the TTT video fits the cleaner, more up-feel of that song but falls short because of its' relatively cheesy look. The studio-setting looks a bit outdated. Another Day is way to much of a power-ballad to go down well on eMpTyV, but they guys seem to have thought that it had the biggest potential. This, to me, is strange. I like the song, but that's because I'm a DT fan - I'm quite biased, in 93 when it was released, people were more tired than ever of the 80's sounds and looks. You can't deny it - AD has got a bit of 80's look.

Lie is a fairly good video IMO, the setting, lighting and tempo of it fits the song well and it went down well here in europe, quite well at least. The song itself though was just a little bit too weak to really break them big. TSM is the next best IMO, it's a more simple feel to it with a little storyline that captures the song while not being overly posey. If I got to choose, Mike should direct their first video for the next album and make it very different. Don't care at all for traditional stuff like posing and playing. Either do a free artsy-fartsy video with (almost) no band playing in it, or make a studio-type-video from the actual recordings, maybe with some live clips in it. Spoonman and Fell On Black Days both from Soundgarden are good examples of these type of videos. If the right song is chosen, does NOT have to be an obvious choice since people nowadays can swallow other stuff if it's just packeted the right way, they could break on MTV. Here in europe they're always grante time on HBB, but maybe they could also get some airtime on The End and on more rock-oriented programs in the US.

I don't really know what my point is with this ramble, I just wanted to get some discussion going on the subject of videos.

    Later...

    /Mats

and BTW: will Al Bal.... send the damn tapes to our fellow jammers so that we can save those disclaimer lines for useless ramblings like this.

In this time of Christmas, its time to remember the good in others. A fellow Y'Jammer was willing to try to help me out with some 'difficult' to obtain DT recordings. Even tho he was unable to find what I was looking for, he did direct me to a good source. The following is a snip from my reply to him. I think it applies to most other Y'Jammers as well:

.. will do...sorry I couldnt help you more...

    Jon

I think it was pretty cool that you were willing to help out a fellow Y'Jammer. From what I read on the JAM, we are mostly decent, honest people, willing to go the extra mile/kilometer (PC?) to help eachother in whatever way we can. Many Y'Jammers have tried to post the our common characteristics; this is another one that should be added to the list.

    --Randall L. Braun

Christmas trivia question: I just heard ELP's remix (on Works Vol. II) of Greg Lake's 'Father Christmas' single. From which classical opus is one of the major themes used in FC derived?

I think it is also appropriate that DT's cover of 'O Holy Night' receive much airplay this Season. Since OHN is public domain, DJ's should be free to play it without worrying about any ASCAP/BMI royalty charges (Please, don't flame me if I'm wrong on OHN, but I'm willing to be corrected).

For those of you who are looking for the Shadow Gallery CD "Carved in Stone" or any of the other Magna Carta label CDs, you can find them all online at EMusic or CDWorld:

EMusic -- http://emusic.com (has the cheapest prices for those CDs). CDWorld -- http://www.cdworld.com/cdworld.html

Just search for the label: Magna Carta to get the list of all the Magna Carta bands (can't do this at EMusic, just CDWorld). Or search for a specific band. They seem to have pretty decent prices on other CDs too, though you may want to try other stores too. You can use the Bargain Finder to search all of the various online CD stores for the best buy on a CD. Get to it at:

    http://bf.cstar.ac.com/bf/

CDWorld and EMusic seemed to consistently have the best prices when searching via the Bargain Finder. It looks like CD Connection has the cheapest prices for those CDs if you order more than 3 or 4. You can get to CD Connection and the other online music stores from my music page:

    Hello Baron,

In the consideration of a lyrical piece, or in large, any artistic expression, there are really only two relevant discussions.

The first is what the author meant to say or express when he/she created the piece. Many artists have deliberate intentions for much of their work. In fact, many songs, paintings, books, etc. are specific endorsements of an idea or cause. Others are perhaps introspective works, or simply stories. However, the artist usually has some reason for creating whatever it is they create. Regardless of the motivation, unless he/she tells us, we can only speculate as to what was intended.

The second grows out of what is called the "New Criticism," which begins with the statement that what the author meant is of no consequence to the audience, because once an artist releases the art to the world he/she makes that world co-creator. The only really significant question becomes, "What does it mean to me?" Each creation is redefined by the audience that experiences it. True, many will experience a piece in a similar way. But the power of art remains in each response, regardless of how disparate they may be, because of the separate experience each audience brings to that work.

Thus, while one interprets a Dream Theater lyric as an expression of religious frustration, another reads it as moment of epiphany wherein personal witness of divinity occurs. I personally, have heard diametrically opposed interpretations of the same words in a DT song.

I suggest that this part of the strength in Dream Theater's music, that it supports a variety of personal reaction.

So, perhaps we should share our feelings about the music, rather than categorically impose our response on others.

    Peter

Ok, I'm really getting tired of all this religion stuff. You're all wrong. Doesn't everybody know that Chaos is God of All and Nothing, then you've got his children Paladine(he's the good one), Takhasis(she's nasty), and Gilean(he's just in the middle). Those are you're gods! There's a bunch of others like Reorx and Chemosh but I won't go into all of them. I doubt anyone understands what I'm saying. You had to read the book I read. Please don't take this seriously, I'm not trying to piss anyone off. I'm not being serious here so don't rip me apart after you read this. Arrivaderci. ---KL "We have no food! We have no jobs! Great post Ben.....which begs the question...how do you know what Bafu's ass looks like?? I know you were using available keyboard characters...but...it looks pretty close to the real thing to me....hmmmmmmmm....I think I can see _your_ lip marks. :-)

DT shows in December...I am STILL trying to find someone to pay my airfare so I can go too...let me know...Oh yeah, I will need tickets too...and a place to stay(NO CATS) ...and food for the weekend. Don't worry about your cost... I will fly coach if necessary. That's the kind of nice guy I am. :)

Karri K. Kiuiluoma...the <G> means "_G_oing to send Warren money for airfare"...and FYI means something else like "HAIRBALL gets into the show free and he is a real asshole" ( HE knows the real meaning to this message.) OK,OK, <G> mean 'grin', and FYI means 'for your information'.

BTW (by the way)..when Dream Theater played in Portland last November 29th, 1994, they didn't do the tennis ball thing, I wish they would have.....LaBrie comes out with a fucking catcher's mask on, he grabbed baseballs out of a bucket and started throwing them at the audience!!!...(this is during Mike P's drum solo). The only problem was that the stupid DT crew forgot to hand out baseball mitts, or even let us know what was going on. At the end of Mike's solo I had a slight concussion...the girl next to me had her nose broken...shit girls can't catch anyway!! Let me conclude by saying that a lot of 'hush money' was passed around that night just so _you guys_ wouldn't know. LaBrie was so arrogant that he didn't even let the paramedics use the PA system to coordinate rescue efforts.

    TREVOR RABBIN has testicular cancer...

I think Jeremy Haynes had a sex change operation and is now Sue Moscardini. That would explain why he..she..it... dropped out of sight for a while. A sex change is very traumatic, ask Hairball, so that is probably why Jeremy-Sue couldn't get it together and return the trades.

Mike Bahr....since you are going to do the liner notes on WDATU...how much $$ would it take to have ME playing guitar. (How much did Hairball pay??) I have some McDonald's Monopoly game pieces I could part with......

Chris Crowder," Burger King Empoyee of the Month"...the last thing we need on the Jam in another fucking idiot bragging about his life's achievements..change your sig!!<G>

Christopher Caminitti...although your comment about Bafu's ass still lingers...your other comment about Blue Murder and Sykes....it would be GREAT to see them get together for a song or two. When DT was is Portland(see above) John Petrucci told me that James LaBrie was going to do some back up vocals on Blue Murder's next album. I don't know if it happened/will happen etc. Can't wait for the next album, though.

I just picked up a copy of the "Milan 1993" 2CD boot. The sound on this is excellent! I definitely woulkd recommend it to anyone thinking of buying CD bootlegs, second only to Mike's stuff.:) It's over 110 minutes of great sound. Here's the tracklist:

Metropolis Pt. I (9:23) Afterlife (7:46) Under a Glass Moon (7:38) My personal favorite! Wait for Sleep (3:02) Surrounded (6:01) The YtseJam (10:15) Yes! Instrumental/Take the Time (12:48) ----- To Live Forever/Instrumental (12:18) Another Day (5:19) Only a Matter of Time (8:25) Pull Me Under (8:49) Instrumental (5:00) Learning to Live (13:32)

All of them have James on vocals. I got mine for $45 and I was told that this boot would soon go out of print in order to produce something more recent from Awake or ACOS. If you see it, get it! I haven't figured out what the Instrumentals are yet, but I imagine that they're nothing new.

You guitar people suck. Why? Because you guys get all the videos. I wonder if anybody has ever produced a keyboard/piano video? I've never heard of one. If anybody has heard of one and can recommend some to me then do it. And I don't mean the introduction to Piano. I mean something more intermediate to advanced.
