Well, I think I'm finally gonna do it. Portnoy kills me so much and I was
listening to Rush recently and Neil kills me too. I'm gonna take some drum
lessons!! So, I wanted to ask you YtseDrummers for some advice. I'm a bass
player and I like it that way but I'm working with a friend on a recording
project and we have to write the drums ourselves (via the ever popular drum
machine). That's just for demos of course. When we go into the studio,
we'll have a real band. So I thought that learning to play some drums would
give me a better understanding of drums and help me write better parts.
Plus, it'll probaby help my bass playing a lot. I have no intentions of
becoming a drummer or playing drums in a band. I don't even want to buy a
whole kit. I'm wondering what I can get away with (or without) and still
learn to play somewhat. Remember, it's much more to be able to drum out a
part I hear in my head, understand drums better, know what the heck Portnoy
is doing, and read drum notation. Thanks a lot.

I'm making the DT association here because Portnoy is the real reason that
I'm even considering any drum lessons but it might be more appropriate to
reply in email. I don't know.

Hi all. I was looking through a local music store's "music"
magazine (Request, put out by Sam Goody, et al), and noticed an
organization selling "authentic concert t-shirts." They had
pictures of ~100 t-shirt fronts, with another 200 or so listed.
One of the listed shirts was DT Mirror. Does anyone know what
this might look like? The shirts were $15.95 ea. I'd just
like to know what to expect if I do order one. Thanks in advance,

Hey, I live in Iowa as well... where in Iowa are you? I'm in Bettendorf.

This is cool to meet another DT fan from Iowa... I met one on the YTSEJAM

Okay, Listen up EVERYONE! About 2-1/2 weeks ago, after many previous
conversations with him about it, I received a call from Don Douglas, DT's
manager, saying that DT had a band meeting and they could definatally come
to the YtseCon but only for an hour and that he was working on getting more
time. They had already moved their sound check some for them to be able to
be there that long but he would see what he could do...

At this point we started collecting money and making reservations for
shirts, stickers and a banquet hall to have the Con in.

Well I called Don back last Monday to confirm everything (Obligations were
already made for shirts, stickers and the hall.) then Don says to me that I
am sorry if I "gave you the impression" DT could come to the Con the last
time we talked. "Actually I still haven't spoken to all of them" about it
and "still have one more member to contact", then I'll know for sure.

-GAVE ME THE IMPRESSION?!?!?!?!?!- He told me they could come!!!

He said that them only being there for an hour was "tentative" but if
anything, it would be longer. "I'll call you tomorrow", he then said. Well
I didn't hear from him the next day, or the next, so I called him. Well he
still didn't know and said to call back the next day (Thursday) around
5:30pm. So I did and he was on the other line w/ someone and said he'd call
me as soon as he got off. Well I waited until 6:15 and he never called, so
I called him again and he had left for the day. So when I walk in from work
today (Friday) at about 4:30 the phone rings...(wow he actually called me
back this time...) He said that unfortunately, none of DT will be able to be
at the YtseCon. Due to "other obligations" and things of that nature. "On
concert days, the band is really busy and it is a bad time to have things
like this." He said that "they had another band meeting last night and
rather than try to make the fans happy", they decided they would not have
time and would have to attend other events. He said they had interviews and
picture shoots and things of that nature. Basically he just apologized and
    said goodbye.

    The Problem at hand:
    1) You guys are going to be pissed...
I feel terribly bad about this, but its not my fault and I don't
want anyone to be mad at me. I simply relayed messages from DT to you guys
and did no altering, even slightly, of what was said. I then took those
messages and orghanized a, what would have been, very successful event
    around them.

    2) The whole money issue:
This is for me the biggest problem of all. I am pissed probably
more than any of you, but I guess we must deal w/ it. I told him how many
people were coming (70-80) and that the entire jam (2000 fans) would be very
disappointed. He apologized again and would try to have them stop by for a
few, but could by no means promise anything. Now - the problem lies in the
situation that could arise from people not attending now, and people wanting
their money back. I know that I can't expect everyone to still come to the
Con but if they don't, I will be SERIOUSLY in the hole...

As of now, I am $200 short. If everyone comes who says they were coming, I
will be about $30-$60 ahead. This will just cover the costs of the MANY
MANY phone calls I made to NY (from Florida & during the weekday) and the
many other ones I made to all of you. I also put a lot of hours and
planning into this, including several days of leaving work early to get the
shirts ready on time. I wasn't planning on making much if any money on this
event, but I wouldn't mind getting paid at least minimum wage for it.
Anyway, like I was saying, if you guys who said your going to come, end up
not showing...I am totally screwed...That will put me like $250-$300 buck in
the hole!!! I can't afford that at all!!! That CANNOT happen!! So I urge
everyone to PLEASE still attend the YtseCon II. You will still get a DT
shirt and sticker but DT will probably not be there. I will have 6-8 extra
shirts (I was planning on giving them to DT and management) so they will be
sold with a sticker for $8. Stickers will be $1.00 and entrance will still
be $10 at the door for no shirt or $15 for a shirt and sticker. I promise
these costs are not for my profit. As I stated before, I am likely to be in
debt after all of this. So I beg of you please everyone still come to the
YtseCon II and help me out.

I did my best with everything and somehow it still failed...I deeply
apologize but need you all to remember that it wasn't my fault and in the
end, I am the one who will probably end up being hurt the most by it... So
if you will, please help me out... :(

Come on, everyone... he did more than was asked of him, and we
all wanted to get together before the show regardless, so let's all show
up on the off chance DT *might* make it there, ok? I'll talk to Mike
Portnoy in person ASAP and see if I can get him to show, and to bring one
    or all of the others.

    Hello, World Jammers.

Japanese release of ACOS had a lottery ticket for unreleased live CD.
As probably all of others who bought it did, I also sent it.
That was three months ago, so I had forgotten it.

A few days ago I got an envelope from East West Japan. Since recently
I'm beginning to apply for a job, at first I thought that was guide
    about that company.

But it wasn't that. It included a single CD!

The CD includes only one song, recorded live at ronnie scott's jazz club
London, England, January 31, 1995, named "Tears."
Yes, that's one originally recorded by rush.

Probably you jammers know that song, because Subconscious includes
same tune. Two songs are from quite same show except one I got from
EWJ is better recording than one in Subconscious, especially I can
listen clearly about Key and Bass and the former has James's some MC
    before the tune.

It wasn't new for me. But of course I'm glad to get it.
It is Chiristmas Present from DT ? :)

See you and I wish you have a happy new year.

    Question.

Why has DT written so many cool songs that they've never put on the
albums? Don't Look Past Me is a great song IMO, and even though the
cheese factor is perhaps slightly higher in some parts than the other
songs on WDADU, I don't see why they didn't take songs like that,
Bombay Vindaloo, or TLF (or ACOS for that matter), and put them on
WDADU or I&W. It doesn't make sense to me. I'd love to hear Don't
Look Past Me with James doing the vocals. But it seems like they've
totally forgotten some of their coolest material ... it just seems
everything DT do is awesome, and I Don't see how they can pick and
    choose like that.

    Anyway.

    Ummm... so?

I just wanna meet all these wackos that I talk to online all the time. :)

But seriously, wasn't the original idea just to meet everyone? It's gonna be fun with or without the band. I really think it would be ridiculous for anyone not to show up just because DT themselves won't be there. We are going to see them in concert right afterwards anyway.

Also, I just want to say a big thanks to Trey for getting all this together. WIth or wothout DT it's gonna kick ass.

    See ya there!!!!!!!

To anyone I am trading with: I sent private e-mail to most of you, but to those who I didn't, now that the jam is back, I don't have to worry about it. I will be going on a vacation to Long Island and am leaving on Saturday. If you have sent a package after Wednesday, be prepared to wait. I have said I will not do any more dubs after today (Friday), but if I recieve any mail tomorrow, I might get around to it. I sent Mikko's out today, I'm almost done with Rick's (sorry-probably can't get it to you until after New Year's), and the only one who has worked out a trade with me for Ytse-Con was Ben. Other than that, I don't have any other tapes in my possesion. BTW, If you want to send me e-mail, If its OK with him, (John?) I may possibly be using a friend's computer to pick up my e-mail mid-week, but I doubt it. So anyway, I'll be away until january 2nd, and will resume the trading, so don't worry-I haven't blown you off or anything. Sorry, I won't be doing any other trades at Ytse-Con because by the time this gets posted, I'll be long gone. So, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Feastful Kwanza (sp.?), Happy Boxing Day, or whatever the hell you celebrate, and Happy New Year. later--------------Brian

Hello all. I'll try to be as brief and information-dense as possible with this post, since I won't get many more before I leave.

A new WDATU/CD update should be posted very soon, probably tomorrow. It has been cut down a LOT because the new format of the Jam is set to conserve bandwidth, and as such it will only contain ordering info, orders received, and current CDs info. The release schedule and other explanatory stuff is no longer a part of that... I will post it periodically to keep people up to date, on its own.

IT WILL BE THE LAST UPDATE UNTIL JANUARY 6th AT THE SOONEST.

The reason being, I am going to New York next week for the four shows, and then the week after, I *might* squeeze an update out on New Years Day, but I might not have a chance to, before I have to make a trip to Atlanta and back (family emergency). I just want to let you all know in advance that WDATU is still late in arrival (a fact for which I am changing printing companies yet again, to "Mike Bahr Printing") but I will be shipping the CDs with all possible speed. I intend to get as darn many of them given out as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Other important things for you to know. Antiquities has a master reel completed and will be submitted for processing/glass master the day I return from Atlanta. The other CDs are still in the works... Scott Hansen and I are hard at work on a good cover for the Rush CP tour disc. I'm running tape for the other things too.

It looks like I might not get to all your mails in time before I leave. A busy finals week has my current mailbox exceeding 200, and I'm diggin' through them as fast as I can. I intend to get to at least half of those today, but then I can't do ANY until 1/1/96 at soonest. And, naturally, mailboxes go LIFO in the order, so if you send me mail anytime recently, and you don't hear back from me, I swear to God I don't mean to blow it off or ignore you; I will answer it as soon as possible, I PROMISE. I answer every piece of mail I get (assuming no timing issues come up) and I just want to make that known to everyone.

Finally, I wish all of you and everyone you know and care about, a safe, happy, peaceful holiday season, and I hope your 1995 ends as incredibly as mine will (at Dream Theater's final concert!!).

    Take care, everyone!!

    Just a crazy thought...

What do you think would happen if you played a DT song backwards? Would everything be in 4/4 and A major? Would we derive the answer to the religion topic? Would we know JP's real name (I happen to think that 'Petrucci' is a little to coincidental...)? Would 6:00 on a Christmas morning suddenly be 12:00 on Easter? Would it sound like Rush? Or would it sound like shit? I think this warrants serious attention because you never know with these guys.

    Later, Glenn
