    Jammers!
It's 2AM and I just saw Dream Theater for the first time! I could sit
here and tell you how great they were, but all of you who were there
already know that and it would make the people who wern't able to go feel
bad, so I won't. I just want to say one thing- They did SCARRED!
This was definitly a great show and I'm sorry I didn't get to hook up
with any of the other ytsejammers, exept for the two guys from Pittsburg
I met. Sorry I already forgot your names!
It was pretty crazy, but If anyone cares I am 6 feet tall with long
black hair and was standing just right of centerstage and about three to
    five rows of people back.
What a great way to end the year! Good Night!

well, instead of waiting for 2 hours to get in, just one tonight. yipee!!!!

sorry i missed the ytsecon. i also missed the chance to meet mike bahr or
heather- i guess it wasn't meant to be. alas. but i met trey, digital man,
    and some other jammers.

and i met bafu vai. oh what fun that was.

to all the jammers i have met in the past few days, it was cool (albeit
short). hope you guys got backstage or got something really cool. it was
excellent to see jp wearing a ytsejam shirt tonight.

anyways, to those keeping score, hear's what happened.

the set: mirror/lie, ttt, blues jam-lsoad, scarred, acos, ad, medley (rover,
something i still don't know what it is, damage inc., in the flesh, heart of
the sunrise [again! yes!]), voices, electric silent man, pull me under.
    encore- wfs, perfect strangers.

all in all a great show again. lasted about 2 hours, 10 minutes.

is this officially the first time they've played "scarred" in the us? someone
please fill me in on that.

i would have to say that the ct show was better than tonight's, but not by
much at all. it would have blown it away if they had played their entire set,
but since they did, they would get the edge on that tonight.

but both nights were amazing!!!! glad i was there for history.

hope to hear the same for the remaining 2 shows.

this time, i brought my earplugs. i can still hear. yipee. see ya.

david, the blessed by bafu and magical kobayashi

I've been asked to forward the following to the mailing list:

    scarcity.

As a personal friend of hers for many years, I felt I had to respond to
this message, as it paints a completely inaccurate picture of Krys who
has perhaps given more of herself and her time to Prog Music and the
Prog Community then any other individual I've ever met.

This is just trash. You've just shown us what kind of a creep and a
jerk you are. You have no idea if Krys lied (she didn't), and certainly
no basis what-so-ever to call her compulsive. As for pathetic, it's
obvious to me here as to which of the two of you is pathetic.

    >>I'm off the soapbox. Trade with Krys Fuell at your own risk. Don't

I just got back from the Malibu show. F***ing ruled!!!! I somehow managed
to get aftershow party passes (thanks Ralph) and I got to speak to the band.
Basically, this is what I got from the members:
James: He's pissed at some people on the jam. He says that he reads it
when he gets the chance and that he reads people "James-bashing". Let's
all try to be a little nicer to James in the future, so as not to hurt his
    ego, I mean, feelings. :)
John M.: DT has so far written one song for the next album. He told me the
working title, but I forgot it (big smack upside the head). I'll try to
remember it and post it when I do (it was a one-word title). I asked about
the style, and he said it is more instrumental-based, and is remeniscent of
Learning to Live. He also mentioned that he finished recording his
instructional video (with the rest of the band costarring). Bad news to
most of us is that it will only be released in Japan (with translation) and
was meant for mainly the Asian markets (hey, isn't that biased?).Oh, well.
John P.: This will come as a pleasant surprise to fellow ACOS transcribers
(Brandon). John was very, very, very, very cool about taking a look at
a sample that I brought him. The one I showed him was from DOW (12:18-13:01)
and he actually corrected me on the part from 12:42-12:45. He originally
had trouble reading just TAB (said he needed the music up top). Now, I
don't know whether he reads the music notation onlyand phrases himself (which
would explain his thorough understanding of his fretboard) or whether he
needs it for the rhythms mainly (like the rest of us lowly humans). But he
was able to adjust and give me some pointers. He gave me an address where
I could send the finished product, so everyone should rest asured that it
    will be pretty accurate.
I didn't really get to chat with MP or DS much. I did, however, meet Trey
Allen, Mike Bahr, and a bunch of other jammers (what's up). Anyway, I won't
post details about the show until after they are over, so as not to ruin
anyone's experience (except the fact that they had cool ACOS shirts on sale).
    Anyway, I'm beat (4:00 a.m.). Can't wait 'til tomorrow's show. Later.
    -Its
P.S. Chris Merlo--could you E-mail me privately about the cover band thing.

Wow! Man, this has been an absolutely great day! I hardly know where to
begin, so I guess I'll go in time order.

    Ytsecon II
It sucked that the band couldn't make it, but boy, did we have a good
time. I finally got to put faces and voices to a bunch of e-mail
addresses. Bafu and Mike Bahr are even cooler than I anticipated. Trey
is a logistical genius, and a swell guy to boot. Skadz and Brian Wherry
are great guys, and are driving my sorry ass to NJ tomorrow (um, later
today :) for the Birch Hill show. The Chews rock. Bigman is, well,
big. Golly, who else? Um, Pellaz, Andy Keegan (the boarding-house guy
of the decade), Wisha, and a whole bunch of others that I can't remember
because I'm really tired. :) But it was a lot of fun and well worth it.

    Food
It's going to be said anyway, I'm sure. The Roy Rogers that we were
supposed to eat at has, within the past month, shut down! Doh! D-Man
had to think of a Plan B quick! Fortunately, some of the guys scouted
the area out earlier in the day and found a McD's for us. :)

    The Show
Huh? What? Sorry, I'm very deaf. But it was well worth it. As
promised, I had my face close to JM's. Actually, I was in Derek's face.
You got it - front row, my elbows on the railing. At one point, MP
yelled to everyone to make some noise. I yelled back at him, and he
yelled right at me! Coolness! JP seemed to smile at me a couple of
times. I guess my face told him that he sounded good. James slapped my
hand. JM was, well... he played great. :) And I think I actually caught
    a half-smile!

    The Songs
They played Scarred!!! For the first time ever, and I was there! How
cool is that? Everything sounded great. I'm sure someone else will post
a set list. I forget who was next to me (Remind me!), but I know the two
of us yelled "Please Don't Go!" Myung blew my fucking mind, and I'm
going to start practicing a lot! I was kinda upset that there was no
drum solo, but hey, what can you do? Lifting Shadows has a great new
intro thingie. All in all, only one thing to say: DT rocks.

See you all at the Birch Hill, and possibly in CT as well!!

    -Chris

    Hello people,
I'm back on the list after being off for a couple of months, so I
don't know what's up on the discussions lately. There's this new and
upcoming German band called Superior which has released their debut, Behind.
Their sounds are pretty cool. Sort of like a cross between Helloween and
DT. There is a remarkable resemblence in the drumming technique used by
their drummer and Mike Portnoy. Here's a snip of mail between me and the
    guitarist Bernd Basmer

    >Like who are your band's major influences in music style?
Oh well, there are so many influences. Ok, naturally DT is one,
others are Queensryche, Metallica, and even some film-music
is included in our music. Our keyboarder is merely influenced by
some jazzier kind of music and so, many things come together
in the band. Here's a snip of mail between me and the guitarist Bernd Basmer
    >You know, the drummer really sounds like Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater.
Wow! He'll be proud if I tell it to him! :-)

    >And your's is the 1st German band I've heard to have so much keyboards in
    >your music. Cool man.
Well, there are some others though, but the most "big" ones are without
keyboard, that's true. I think the keyboards allow a bigger range of
music you can include in the songwriting.
    ******************************************************************************
    Anybody heard of them?
If not and you're interested in checking them out, echo yourselves and I'll
put up the URL of their page in the list. There're 3 wav sample files for
listens. I believe a Net search will obtain the address too.

You know, I could go on saying a million and one things on how incredible the show was.....and I guess I will.....the problem is/was that there seemed to be a lotta bad karma last night....

OK here it is: (Malibu Show, Dec 28th)

    Good Stuff:

    1) The band was so tight, that Im concerned that they may have trouble with their bowel movements...... 2) The Medley- stuff like Heart Of The Sunrise and In The Flesh 3) ACOS and Scared Kick unbelievable butt!!!!! The Band was at its tightest during these two songs.... 4) The Fact that there wasnt an Solos.....I want to hear music, not someone Musically Jerking Off...(even though Portnoy could rub one out better than anyone in the world!) 5) Labrie was dead on!!!!! As my friend said, "He IS 2 Huge lungs, thats it!" 6) Myung actually moved out to the crowd!!!!! (can you believe that one!!!????) 7) Petrucci shaved his gotee...he looks alot better, but it looks hes bringing a beard back...Portnoy shaved his beard into a really cool Zappa stash!!!

    Bad Stuff:

    1) Like at the Conn. show the night before, everyone was forced to wait outside for at least 1 hr. I was fortunate enough to find Digital Man and some others at the front of the line... But I can only imagine the disgust of the people at the rear.... 2) The amount of people they actually let in....Did anyone in Malibu give a single fuck about fire codes....(Not that its any different at any concert!) You see...I was up in front by where Derek was....and as soon as the band started...I felt shifting like you wouldnt believe... before you knew it, Dickheads of all sizes and shapes started pits and began to chimb up top and do some crowd riding...Now, there is a point where thats fun...I can understand....but when it gets out of hand...thats a different story.... 3) The Jerkoffs moshing and crowd surfing!- I hated this aspect twice!!!!! This is FUCKING DREAM THEATER!!!! Not Pantera!!! I still cant understand why these baldheaded, flannel wearing, Nirvana-slurping, alternative praying deuchebags have to come to this show and procede to make it look like a bush concert. I wanted to watch Dream Theater, I was just more fortunate than others to be right up front, WHY did I have o be subject to that!!!! If it were an Anthrax or Pantera Show I would understand......This I dont...I couldnt help thinking that during the Medly when DT was doing Damage Inc., when these little fucks were slamming, that they should get a nice bullet in the skull and then I had to laugh it off when Heart Of The Sunrise came, that they stood there dumbfounded.....Im glad they dont have the musical understanding to listen to Yes, thats one of the many things I have that these fuckfaces dont! 4) The still consistent bitching by people about Derek, I bumped into so many people complaining about Derek BEFORE and after he got on stage....Come on give it a rest......Kevin Moore left the group...hes gone...HE LEFT...so Fuck him! The band is got to go on for the better of the band...so find someone who will do the job....and I dont think any rice crispy critic has earned the right to say whether Derek is the right man! But I think Dream Theater has earned that right.....so they decided and Im here to support the choice!

So In a nut shell....The Band was great, the Music and Set list kicked Butt........It was the assholes that ran the club and some of the fans(I use that term very loosely!)

    Till... Mojoman

I'm going to keep this message brief because I'm dead tired from the Dream Theater concert last night. I first of all have to thank Trey Allen again. The Ytsecon that he organized was successful. Eventhough the band didn't show, we got to see everyone from the jam. The showing for the Ytsecon seemed very successful. I know I had a good time at the Ytsecon. Then, after the Ytsecon we surpose to of gone of a Roy Rogers, but when ytsejammers checked to see how to get there they saw the darn place closed down. So, I think they went to McDonalds. At that time, I went with Thrak to another Roy's. Anyway, when we got to Malibu, we only had to stand outside on a line in the freezing cold weather for 90 minutes. Not bad considering it was around 25 degrees out and the wind chill at -1000. That part had to be the worst. Finally, the show started around 9:30 when I guess I'll call it a duet preformed. I can't remember their names. But that didn't matter because those 2 guys rocked. The 2 member group consisted of a keyboardest and a drummer. I was shocked when I heard these guys. Both of them had execeptional talent and produce an awesome sound. They were by far the best opening band that I've ever seen. Then, Dream Theater finally came on around 11PM. I can't recall that much from the show because I was getting killed. It was a fucking madhouse at Malibu. The only things that really stuck in my head from this show was that Dream Theater of course was amazing. But what else would we think. They actually played Scarred. IT was real cool that they played that. They also may of played a few pieces of instrumentals that's going to be on their next album. But don't hold me accountable, if they don't have it on the next one. My favorite song at the concert would have to be the Electric version of the Silent Man. Man, if that song is released on the next album, they would be foolish not to release it as a single. Besides that, I don't remember much because like I said I was getting killed. AT one point or should I say at many points, I thought I was going to drop dead. There was times when I actually couldn't breathe. I had to hold on to peole around me for dear life. If I didn't hold on to them, I would of surely fainted from exhaustion. It's not too easy to breathe when there are 10 smelly, sweaty, crazy guys all in the same square foot. But all in all, I had a great time. Especially, when I got kicked in the head and when a body surfer just happened to fall right on me. I did somehow survive that concert with only a servere case of dehydration and 2 bruises on my face. All yeah, one last thing I remember about the concert. They actually didn't play the songs that got any radio play from Awake. They didn't play Caught in a Web or Lie. After the concert, we all tried (as of the ytsejammers) to meet the band backstage. Unfortunately, we couldn't get in. But I think Mike Bahr was in there. It really sucked how all the damn security staff throw us out of there, even though another guy in security told us that we'll be able to meet the band. But what can we do. We did try our best to meet the band. We didn't do it, but I'm sure everyone that went to the show at Malibu had a great time. I once again want to thank Trey Allen for organizing the Ytse-Con. And we gotta thank the people that housed out of towners. The only person that I know of that housed others besides me was Andrew Keegan, but I'm sure there were others. If I thought, I was tired before I wrote this, imagine how I feel now. The post only went about a page longer than I thought it would go. Anyway, I hope everyone had a good time at this show and did or will have good times at future DT shows.

I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

I'll speak to you guys on IRC.

i don't want to be seen as a war criminal for posting about the concerts. i mean, there are some people who just may want to know what went down! i don't know if i dig the "spoiler" title, but hey.....that's just my lowlife opinion, i suppose...

Well, It's Friday and I'm psyched about DT tomorrow night. I can't believe they did Heart of the Sunrise. I hope they do it again. And Damage Inc.! It's gonna be a great show. I'll be wearing my Ytsejam T-shirt if anyone wants to say, "hi." I'd sure like to meet anyone who goes. It'll be nice to put a face to the names :).

    'jammers,

Thanks to a few days off during the X-mas holidays I managed to learn the few crazy parts during the instrumental portion of Metropolis (long scalar portion and other long section that goes on and on). If anyone would like to talk about those sections and how I attacked them, feel free to e-mail me privately. My appreciation has reached a new level!

Hi- I (a guitarist) and my drummer friend seek a bassist, vocalist, and keyboardist to complete a progressive metal lineup. We have already written quite a bit of material. Admittedly I am biased, but I think it is quite good - our stuff is very much in the Dream Theater vein, but a little bit darker (at times sort of Queensryche-ish, and at other times tending more towards jazz). Our music is very complex harmonically and rhythmically. We have our own digital studio and are currently recording a demo CD. We wish very much to start playing live gigs, but we need a complete lineup to do so. So if you are in or near San Diego (UCSD area, to be exact), and have excellent rhythm, technical competence, and a dedication to the idea of playing complex yet intense and emotional prog metal, then please let me know! Females or males welcome for any position. For the record, we are ages 23 and 25 and are both computer programmers by day. I can be reached at:

    Thanks very much.

Everybody keeps talking about "A change of seasons". I don't know anything about that DT-release, and I very much doubt, that my local record store does. I would be very happy if somebody could "take the time" to send me some info on ACOS, so that I will know more about it when I go seaching for it. (Tracklist, company...and so on)

    Thanks!

I love it too. Heavy guitar, excellent composition, good vocals (amazing how many bands have "screamers" instead of "singers", Superior's singer is excellent!) - it has stayed in my CD changer since the day I got it. Kudos to Bernd and his band!
