    Hi 'jammers,

I just returned from the Queensryche concert in Hamburg/Germany. Guess who
we met right after the show, standing in the p.a.-box? Right: Mike! :-)

He said James also is around but we couldn't spot him. Anyway, my friend
got a nice autograph on the back of his jacket (including DT-logo) and I
let Mike sign my QR-ticket. Great, really great :-)

Looking forward to see DT on monday 27th in Bremen/Germany (my hometown).

    Bye,

     Olf

John M.'s bass sound: it's definately improved since WDADU. definately a severe case of And Justice for All... syndrom plus an overall bad mix. I&W it improved. at least the lines are easier to hear when run at high speed making them easier to figure out. it's still drowned in the mix tho. Awake presents us with the best recording/mix of John's bass sound. the entire album has much more ballz than either of the first ones. John's still hidden in the mix tho. i think John P.'s sound got a lot heavy from I&W to Awake. this may also be drowning out Myung. damn, if it weren't for the sub freques, us bass players end up w/ guitar-tone and thus never be heard.

What if everyone in DT had to switch roles? Well, I guess I'd just have to go and kill myself! But seriously, I think that might be kind of cool. I think they're all musically talented enough to be able to switch and still be a great band! It would be a little disconcerting to hear Myung singing, or know that it was LaBrie on the bass. Wouldn't it be neat if DT tried this on a single or something? Just some thoughts triggered by that post :).

Hello Jammers, I am a guitar player who loves Dream Theater as well as Rush. I have been in many agrguments with people trying to decide if Portnoy is better than Peart. Even though Portnoy was influenced by Peart, I believe that Portnoy has taken drum playing to new heights with his melodic type beats. It would be nice to get some input from some drummers as well as others to see who they think is better of the two. Even though I think Portnoy has an edge on Peart, this message is in no way meant to put down Neal Peart. Some responses would be appreciated. Thanks. -Scott Snyderman sas220@psu.edu

    Quoting Doc:

    >Overall, WDADU was horribly mixed anyways since it was Mr. Low Budget >production. Do you know how much studio time is at Kajem? Very expensive.

I'll bet you WDADU cost them more than I&W.

Not only that, but, Prater works VERY cheaply.

    > But on I&W and Awake, the bass tracks ARE compressed, but only for the > bass track, as with digital mastering you don't need to compress the > overall signal because of the incredible dynamic range and > headroom (+100db), Well, ya know, if you wanna get technical here, the bass on WDADU WERE compressed - just not enough. And compressing the overall mix is something a producer will decide to do (and some do) regardless of the amount of headroom. Radio stations, as you know, usually run multiple expanders/limiters/compressors on their signals, which usually alter the sound of what is being played on the air. In other words, what the producer/engineer is attempting to do is to reduce the effect of those compressors/limiters/expanders on the actual mix.

Has nothing to do with "headroom." You still have to run that mix at an SPL of 0db (maybe +3, if you're sadistic). As my audio mentor, Jim Gallagher (the man's worked with stevie wonder, for god's sake) said, "You can only put a gallon into a gallon. No more, no less."

    > same goes for the drums, each track is compress seperately and then > mixed down into the final mix.

Yes, thank you. I know that. =)

Except when you don't have enough tracks or compression units to do that with ;)

Why is everyone so interested in seeing Scarred performed live? Just because it isn't, because its long, or is there something really amazing there that I'm just not catching?

I do like the song now. I'm getting a little more used to WDADU now, it was definitely worth the $22 it cost me (but I found it at Musicland!).

Another Question: What's this business with Kevin Moore and some girl someone has been talking about (something about SDV). If his situation is like the one described in SDV, I feel his pain. I thought he was married, though, because I read in GW in an interview Petrucci said everyone in the band was married except Mike, but that may have been after Kevin left.

First of all, thank you to those that answered my intern question. I've been given a lot to think about. Now, on to the stuff:

    1) I'm all for a YTSE con. I live in LA, so that's where I'll be over the summer, if that's when it's going to happen. If it is going to to take place over the remainder of the school year, I might be able to make it down to Boston. Also, in regards to a cover band playing at the con, if it happens in LA I'll volunteer my services. I can play "Surrounded," "Another Day," and "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream," note-for-note (I play drums) and can get through "Erotomania" without emabarressing myself too badly. I also know of an *incredible* bass player from the LA area on this list (hi Dave).

    2) Someone mentioned the band Tyketto. These guys are GREAT!!! But be warned, they are a hard rock band (gasp). They have two albums out, the first is pretty much straight ahead catchy hard rock, the second one has a blusier feel to it but still retains it catchiness. Anyone who likes this genre of music will love these guys, no doubt about it. I do.

    3) Somone also mentioned the band TNT. Well, color me impressed. I thought that these guys were pretty obscure. I have Tell No Tales and Realized Fantasies, with the latter, IMO, being the superior effort. I usually like only a couple of songs on these albums, but they've got pretty good chops. -That's all for now, thanks for reading.

Huh? Please explain, as I love to know technical stuff about how they make CDs, etc. So please explain what compressing is, and why its done, and how, and what effect it has on us, and why we're talking about it in the context of Dream Theater. And since you seem to know a lot about producing, why can't we hear John Myung?

If there are in fact many people who are wanting a compliation tape with lots of prog on it, I might be willing to make one up, along with a listeners guide that will give some basic info about the bands and some witty comments I have about them. :) I would concentrate more on older prog of course, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, but would add some newer material of course. Any comments/suggestions/flames? :)

Just to clear things up people, this sample is NOT made by Queensryche. It was released on a sample CD to be used for commertials, TV shows, and movies. It is public domain and has nothing to do with QR except that it is on Mindcrime.

This and the fact that when AOL opened up the newbie flood gates, all of their messages they posted were being duplicated 10 fold. So, one post of "Can you see this" turned into 10. Bad programming on the part of AOL. I think they actually HIRED newbies to write the software. They then hired newbies to come in and think of a bug that the newbie software writers could employ in their program that would totally PISS EVERYONE off.

That has to be how it went, I can't think of any other way AOL could screw up as they did.

A con in western New York would be MOST excellent, or at least on my end - I'm from Rochester and will be attending college in Binghamton in the fall (I'm supposed to be there NOW - but I'm not. <G>)

Anyone else on the board from that general area - or southeastern Virginia, where I am at the moment? I know NO DT fans around here, and I saw probably two people that I knew at a concert in July 1993 in Rochester (of course, when you're in the front row, you generally don't get to see the other people around you!). The only person I've met into DT was Mike Nash, the drummer for Wicked Maraya - in fact, he said he grew up with some of the guys. (I would assume this would be Kev and the Johns, since he's from Long Island)

    endless rambling...

Let light surround you! Jaime the Dragon
