    Shit...
I know Waters played bass for PF, but he was also the person who
wrote the keys for pretty much all of their songs, I believe. So, I
know he could really put out some really good songs as long as he
didn't play lead (I'm not sure if he could rip like Kev). I've heard
his solo work is VERY good. Many good reviews about it. I hope that
    clears this up...

Well, I know that there are a decent number of us here from the get

there are more in Boston... I would definatly be up for a get

Damn... well, at least we know that it won't take as long as it did
for them to find James... Hopefully we'll be able to hear some of his

    Hello everyone,

Just want to introduce myself. My name's Brian and I'm here at Penn State. I just subscribed last week so I'm pretty new to all of this. I'll keep this short, I'm interested in picking up an Ytsejam T-shirt. I was informed (thanks Babs) that Jason Giles is the man with the T's. So if your out there Jason, please send me some info, thanks. Later, Brian

    Regarding a DT cover band:

I'd be into it, totally. However, there's a few problems:

    1) I only have a 4 string bass, a 6 string guitar, and a crappy keyboard. 2) I live in Philly.

    Other Items:

Whoever asked about interning, the guy who I know who interns for Elektra (which includes East/West) said "The best place to look is in the back of CMJ (College Music Journal), and the best way to get into it is to get involved with your college station."

    'nuff said.

Anyway, hope ya'll have a good one & you all call your Senators (you should have two, ya know...) and tell them how you feel about S314, "The Communications Decency Act of 1995," as posted in the last Ytsejam Digest.

    Take it light, cyas!

Hey folks! This is your I believe only pakistani subscriber to the JAM. Well, ive been playing drums for about 10 years or so, and hell, after playing rush, I thought naw, nobody's going to take Neil's place, musically, sonically, or creatively.....WHOA!!!!!!!! was I friggin' wrong there... Mike Portnoy is now THE MAN! to be reckoned with...Anyways my point in all of this concerns this YTSEJAM convention everyone keeps talking about...BTW I hope it does materialize...Id also like to see if us (grammar?) musicians on the list who attend this dream convention would like to put on some shows or two....WHAT DYALL' THINK ABOUT THAT? HHMMMM?

I think it would be incredible....to see the influences of all our fav bands come together on stage for everybody to see....

Iv erecently been playing Surrounded, Under a Glass Moon, PMU, Another Day, and TTT off of I&W and Innocence Faded, Erotomania (i LOVE these two songs...) and Voices (unbelievable emotion in this song, whew!) and was wondering if there are guitarists, bassists and keyboardists who can play these as well....

    OH and vocals too.

Great list everybody, keep it turned all the way UP!!!

I have been viewing my recent bootlegs of FW and DT and noticed a few things... Those of you who plan to tape future shows on VIDEO TAPE mainly, please use mainly HYPER-CARDIOD mics or SHOTGUNS to cut out all the crowd noise, and I assure you, it will sound better!

A little tip: Sony mics aren't all they're cracked up to be.

    Hey fellow Y-jammers,

This is my first post, but I have been on the list since last October or so.

I have a few questions for any of you who can answer:

    1) I know that the front cover of Awake has symbols from each of the different songs. I know some of them, but there are a few that I have no clue on. I'm sure it's just that I am to blind to see them so I need help figuring them out. The ones I don't know are:

    Erotomania Voices Lie

There are some I think I know, but would still like to hear some input! They are:

LSOAD (Something to do with the color in the mirror compared to the black/gray color of the rest of picture?) Scarred (The land in the picture is barron?) Space-Dye Vest (Anything to do with the picture of Jupiter and stars?)

    2) I have just seen a few people talking about this on the list, but I will ask it to see if I can get any others to answer this question. (This can also be something to get the thought jucies going on other songs. Yes, this can be a new topic.) What do people feel is the meaning behind Space-Dye Vest? I know Kevin wrote it, and he has a major Christian background. Did this have any bering on the lyrics? Now with people mentioning his past relationship--Discuss!

    3) Finally, I am looking to increase my DT selection, but I go to school in a small town with no music store. I have tried to look at home for anything, but have come up with nothing. I am looking for any type of boots, singles... ANYTHING. What I would like to know is: 1) Where can I find more DT things (this can include imports and what not)? 2) What the cost is? 3) How good are they? I am looking to pick up the singles (older and newer), but I don't know where to find them. I live in the suburbs of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Does any one have any suggestions on where I could look?

Thanks for any and all info!!

    Hairball SAID:

<<<< John's bass sound was probably taken from a combination of a Direct Signal and miking his amp. How can I assume this? At every Dream Theater show I go to, I seem to wind up in front of his amp. =) It's a very thin, bright tone, but, considering the fact that he uses a 6 string bass, I can understand why.Any more bass in that thing would probably cause a speaker to pop out. That low B string's frequency tends to be so low that many stereo systems can't handle it, and apparently, most engineers don't know how to deal with it. (COMPRESS, COMPRESS, COMPRESS!) >>>>

Overall, WDADU was horribly mixed anyways since it was Mr. Low Budget production. But on I&W and Awake, the bass tracks ARE compressed, but only for the bass track, as with digital mastering you don't need to compress the overall signal because of the incredible dynamic range and headroom (+100db), same goes for the drums, each track is compress seperately and then mixed down into the final mix.

How about just a real big PROG FEST... like Lollapaloozer except for progressive rock. we could have the following line-up:

Queensryche, Rush, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Yes, Marillion

and tons of other bands to make like a two day fest that happens maybe like 4 times a year in different places.

Actually, that's NOT a majority since it's less than half of the total number. Plurality (although it sounds stupid) is the word you're looking for.

This is my first post here (as if you all care). But I really enjoy reading the Ytse. I've been a fan since I first heard Status Seeker, when it came out. I did a metal radio show at Univ. Wis.-Platteville. I've got the single for it. (just the naked guy's armpit on the CD) Now I do a metal show in Madison, WI at WORT. I always manage to play a DT song every week on my show. Usually one of the heavier ones. Thanks to AOL (I'm not one of those internet morons) I can read the DT message boards and get the YtseJam. I have learned which boots to buy. I've got 4 boots and all of the "regular" releases. Sorry for self-indulging. I posted something about a Letterman appearance in AOL. I had a dream that DT played on Letterman the same night as Megadeth. I don't know what they played. But wouldn't Paul Schaffer sound good with DT?

    Thanks all

OK, so I made a mistake :) A plurality are at edu sites (at this moment, anyway).

Hello, all! I have several questions, both relating to Dream Theater, and not. I know that you guys and gals are good at having all the answers. <g>

First the Dream Theater related question... I'm interested in aquiring the date and venue/locale of the following concert albums (things in my possession currently, or soon to be!):

"Lost in the Sky" "Lords of Sound" "Live at the Marquee" "Kick Into a Dream" "Dance of Eternity"

----- I know it's been mentioned here before, but would someone kindly provide me with the address for "Screaming in Digital," the Queensryche mailing list?

----- Anyone hear of the band Tyketto? This was suggested to me, but I don't know anything about them, what their genre of music is...

----- Since some of you guys and gals were so good with the out-of-print Marillion and Pretty Maids, what about the band Fifth Angel? I have in my possession the self-titled album and "Time Will Tell." Is there anything else? How could I go about obtaining it?

    ----- TIA Jen

    Hi Bryan,

Just to let you know, BMG lists Dream Theater's "Awake" as their SOPHOMORE effort meaning that they would have Images And Words as their debut album. So the point of this trivial bit of info is that there is still a debut album out there for you to grab!

I always thought that this came from the t.v. show "Grudge Match", where people get to kick the shit out of each other over stupid quarrels....

    Who knows....

    Wake UP!!!

How is everyone? Onto the topics at hand

Providers --------- Well guess what, those of us with .edu accounts do pay for our access through too methods, tuition and taxes (gotta love them) true, if the costs were direct instead of indirect I would use my account more sparingly. Second, there are some quality .aol users and there are some lousy ones. Same with any domain, the only time I got flamed was by someone on a .com who flamed me for having a stupid last name. This by no means says that people with .com backgrounds are all like this, the topic should be dropped.

Ytse Cons --------- I agree that we should go regional. I would travel pretty much anywhere along the east coast of the USA to get to the con so count me in if there is one out here. I think the cover band idea is good plus we could have people playing stuff from their live collections, memorabilia (I don't know what this would consist of), and just general discussion. I'd be interested in seeing anyone's idea for content of the Cons.

PROG-METAL Compilation tape --------------------------- I decided that I would put together a Prog-Rock-Metal compilation tape from my collect together for the first 10 people who respond to my message. These will be customized to your tastes and will be on a 90min high bias TDK tape with liner and info on how to get the actual CDs if you are interested in hearing more. E-mail me at mbacko1@umbc.edu and put COMPILATION TAPE in the subject and I will mail you my information form that has all of my prog albums listed. Mind you this will not cost you anything but the time to fill out the message I send you. I will post to the digest when I have enough requests.

My motivations are simply to help out the bands I love by promoting them and keeping them around to make more albums and hopefully giving the listener something he or she can enjoy, plus expose them to new aspects of music.

    Later,

    Mike

I'd certainly help to organize a get-together somewhere in the Southeast if there's any interest. I'm in Atlanta, GA, which is pretty easy to get to from most of the Southeast. I was thinking of combining it with the bimonthly record show that's held here -- not that there's always DT stuff there, but it's a good start to a weekend of DT-shopping and gabbing. :)

To the newcomer who asked if DT is worth seeing live: I flew from here up to Detroit Michigan to see DT during the first part of the Awake tour. It cost me a bit over $300 including airfare, but I was determined to see them early in the tour and I'd missed the I&W tour.

It was worth every penny! My only regret was that my local guide wanted to bug out before the band came out to meet'n'greet, and I missed meeting them.
