Yeah, this show sucked. I had just seen them the week before at the Vic in
Chicago (probably the best venue on Earth). You weren't the only one who
was hot. Mike nearly passed out and the band skipped LtL because of it.
Absolutely the most inexcusable thing ever - the temp that is, not Mike. It
must have been 110F in there.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

Neil Peart is a legendary drummer, because of the fact that he started a
lot of the modern progressive rock drummer, but as masters go, there must
be those that carry on his legacy, and some may be technically better than
Peart. I would say that Portnoy and Zonders have taken progressive rock
drumming to new heights, while Portnoy has progressed more in the rock
direction of drumming, Zonders has progressed more towards the jazz aspect
of drumming as his style is more in the vein of Weckl and Vinny Caluita.

Comparing skills of musicians is an interesting but often failed task
since it is mostly subjective observation.

As we have seen in the past, everyone is quick to flame someone or to say something sucks. Not to many people just come out a say that something is cool unless the subject has already been flamed--it's most always in defense (I hope this makes sense). I would just like to say, before it possibly gets flamed, that all of this technical talk about John's bass and shit is cool. It sounds a lot better to back up with facts than opinion, however, opinion also plays a crucial part. It is just rocks to know that people on this list are intelegent. Sorry if this sounds maudlin, but I feel it should be said even though I know this will be flamed in the future!

Thanks for listening,

Nypsie

Here it is!!! The long awaited...........

SUBCONSCIOUS CD ORDERING INFO

Updated 2/27/95

BIG NEWS on the Subconscious CD!

First, a quick review of what Subconscious is: it's a privately financed (meaning I'm paying for everything and I hope I don't lose my shirt doing this) VERY VERY special limited edition CD of some of Dream Theater's early unreleased demos and later unreleased special songs. Since it's technically a bootleg, I've already busted my wallet getting a CD burner, but now it looks like I'll also have the use of some pro pressing equipment on the side. I've put together all the costs and come up with a price that allows me to just _barely_ make up for cost, and pay myself about half of minimum wage for doing the project. Mostly I'm doing it for the FANS. This will only be available to Ytsejam, and to Ytsejam ONLY. It will easily be the rarest of the rare, a must-have for any Dream Theater fan. Since it's not authorized material, it's cool to trade this stuff on tape, but as many of you know, it's illegal to sell it publicly in the US. Thus, I'm _not_ going to sell it publicly, and as such, I have to do all the CD burning myself, on my own equipment. That's why I couldn't sell it for $18-$20 like Kiss The Stone and Metal Crash CDs go for.

The included tracks will be A Change of Season, the 20 minute epic, To Live Forever (acoustic version), O Holy Night, Don't Look Past Me (to the sun), that funny Wanted Dead or Alive cover with Rich Kern & John Petrucci, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight, Mission: Impossible, the demo for Learning to Live (then called Creep With Tonality), Eve live with lyric samples, Moon Bubbles, and possibly one or two more titles if I can fit them.

NOW, on to the ordering news of the day.....

I got in touch with a local company that will be loaning me some pressing equipment, so I will be able to press the CDs way way faster, and they also got me a good deal on blanks, so the price of CDs will be going down. Their price on jewel boxes was great too, so I went and emptied my bank account and put the whole order in TODAY!

This means I will be able to get dozens of orders out within DAYS of my getting my 500 blanks and 500 jewel boxes, and they are also giving me use of a paint die so that I can put multicolor print on the CDs for all of you. The down side is that I won't get my stuff until around 3/31.

The price is down to $25.00, since I got a break on blanks, I'm passing it along to all of you. I'm paying shipping. Also, due to a clerical error on my part, I found out I have _400_ and not _500_ discs reserved, so there are 100 DISCS STILL AVAILABLE!!!

Here's what I want to do, then: I will take reservations for the remaining 100 copies, and then I will fill the orders in the order they are received, starting on the day I get my boxes of blanks + jewels. I am going to be really poor for a month, but that will be fine until the CDs start shipping to each of you.

Ordering can begin RIGHT AWAY!! I will be including information on how to order in this very mail post.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking: Why order now when I'll have to wait four weeks to get my CD?

Well, you don't have to. I am not a ripoff artist and I don't want anyone doing anything they're uncomfortable with. However! I will endeavor to provide enough security with the purchase so that you WILL be comfortable ordering before the CDs are in, because I will be sending out CDs in the order that I receive the orders by mail! Gotta be fair after all! So you can wait if you want... those of you with reservations won't have to worry about anything at all. But you'll get your disc sooner, and I think that with the sort of special edition thing like this, you will want a low numbered copy! (remember folks these are numbered and initialed!)

Here's how to order:

1. Please use a money order. It's simply the best way, and they cost twenty to forty cents. Make it out to me for $25.00 per disc that you want (limit 5 to a person) and I am paying the shipping cost. Each CD will be mailed in a cushioned mailer so it won't get damaged. Please make out the money order to me, Michael Bahr, not to Feel The Rush or anything like that, since this is really just my own personal endeavor.

I accepted checks for the Rush Video Montage, but a few bounced, and I was left holding the bag. I've put too much money into this, and can't afford to be stuck with bad checks, even though I trust 99% of you Ytsejam members. Plus, best of all, a money order can be traced by you, traced by me, and you know for a _fact_ that you will either get a CD, a refund, or I will get thrown in the slammer! :)

2. International customers, I know international money orders are expensive. If there is another way you wish to pay (wire, transfer, or other) let me know and if I can do it, we'll do it.

3. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. By now, you know why. :) I will be literally sending out discs the DAY I get my order of blanks, so nobody will or should have to wait more than 6 weeks. If it turns out that it WILL last more than 6 weeks, I will contact you directly, or you may contact me, so that I can either discount the CD or give you a free concert on tape.

4. My new apartment complex won't hold enough mail for all the mail I will be getting from the list, and also I figured you guys and girls wanted to send money to a more permanent address, so I will be using my parents' (aka my permanent) address for the orders. I am 21, so don't let the word 'parents' scare you into thinking I'm some sort of kid. Also, I am in touch with my parents on a daily basis, so I will be getting the mail immediately, and they can reach me just about 24 hours a day.

If you happen to live in the Phoenix area feel free to page me at 602-232-6647. Besides all the CD stuff, I'm always up for lunch 'n' trading with local Jammers.

Send to: Michael Bahr 3383 W. Monterey St. Chandler, AZ 85226

That's a real address, folks, not a PO box, so you _know_ I'm not going to jump the border tomorrow. :) I'm putting it all on the line so you will all be comfortable enough with the project to make it a success. If you are still having doubts, let me know via email, and I will give you my home phone (don't want to post it publicly) and I will take the modem offline so you can actually raise me on it. :)

5. Send in your order: . Your NAME . The ADDRESS for me to SEND your CD(s) to . The money order, made out for $25, $50, $75, whatever . your EMAIL address, in case I need to contact you (emerg.)

. (OPTIONAL) your home phone.

I won't require home phone because I want you to all feel safe that I am not selling mailing lists. :) If you _do_ include it, I will use it in case of emergency (maybe the mailman spills coffee on your order and I can't read your address or something).

Again, 4-6 weeks for delivery... and if I can get anything faster than that, I will. I've already requested a breakup of the order into two packs of 250 CDs + 250 jewels, but they said 500 is the minimum blanks they can even sell.. so... heck, it brought the price down, so it's worth it. If they get here faster, I send out the CDs right away.

I am at garion@indirect.com and will remain there until the end of time, so please mail me if you are confused, need information, are angry, sad, lonely, maybe even a little whimsical, and need to get in touch with me. Thank you ALL for showing such solidarity that a 21-year-old college student emptied his bank account to order tons of plastic! :) You are truly, one and all, ladies and gentlemen, the best fans Dream Theater could hope for.

Take care! Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com Your friendly discog editor, and, until recently, FAQ guy.

Howdy fellow DT fans. I'm a lurker who finally decided to post. Does anyone know when, if ever DT is going to be in Missouri? I usually find out about good concerts three weeks after the fact.

My thoughts on Portney vs. Peart: It's difficult to say who is really the best of the two. As far as variety of material produced, Peart beats out Portney. Double Bass goes to Portney, but I think Neil actually plays harder. Of course, I could be wrong since I haven't seen DT yet and I've seen RUSH three times. But, if you compare the live videos, Neil *appears* to be hitting harder. Maybe we could hire a physics prof to find out...

Burning For Buddy absolutely rocks! Even if you don't dig big band you should check it out.

Please, please, PLEASE sign me on to whatever list is out there for a copy of that covers gig...I absolutely MUST have this!! E-mail me and we can work out the specifics. This is the kind of show of which I've dreamed ever since I first discovered DT--a link to the greats of days past forged by the greats of the future. In paying tribute to their progressive rock influences, DT pay tribute to themselves as well, acknowledging their own grasp on the prog rock torch. Sorry to be so manic with my very first post to the list. I've actually been lurking about for some time. Thanks for creating such a great list--I've learned a lot and enjoyed reading everyone's comments a great deal.

Nyquist is basically the SPL (sound pressure level) that is required of a frequency before your ear actually hears it... to put it in layman's term...

Tool "Undertow" - great sound. D'Amour has an excellent bass sound (and yes, he uses a pick :P ). the drums dont interfere w/ the bass and the guitar doesn't over power anything except itself. overall, an awesome mix, IMO.

He is not the only progrock drummer who influenced a lot of people... there is Bill Bruford, who perhaps influenced Zonder more, as their styles are more alike than Pearts (or Portnoys.)

While Carl Palmer is probably one of the best power drummers (now THIS guy IS all over the place) I've heard he sometimes gets so caught up in playing, he drags the tempo sometimes... anyone attest to this?

Anyway, didn't Portnoy say Alan White was his drum-god on the LiT vid?

It seems they all have different opinions (wow, who would have though?)

I think I know where you can find the LSoaD on the cover. If you look in the bottom left hand corner, it looks like it is folded. Therefore, the album-cover is the shadow and the bit underneath is the dream.

Just thought some of you might like to ponder that.

Hello ytsejam's, it's BABS. Here is our daily convention update:

I placed a call to DT's manager, left a message for him to return my call. I explained to the person on the phone that I was coordinating a Ytse convention. Then I explained to him what the ytsejam was. He then went on to say "is this some kind of internet party or something?" I found that to be kind of funny, but I maintained a professional attitude and way of speaking with him. All you ytse's who are Catholic do a bead for me that this guy calls me back! See ya. -BABS

This album does have an awesome mix, I think. It used to sound good until someone who rides my bus stepped on the damn thing. I used to remember it sounding good. BTW, I also use a pick when I play bass, I think it brings out more of the plunk in it rather than the wump. Besides, it's much easier to play faster that way. (Dave Ellefson of Megadeth uses a pick also). I think Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction has a rad mix to it also. But that's just my opinion.... ChucK

I don't have to, I don't like him. (Not much, anyway, Geddy's the star attraction of Rush!)

yeah whatever.

ok, well I had an actual argument over "Who is the better drummer?"

I was arguing my way for Portnoy.

This moron claimed that DAVE GROHL from Nirvana was better than Portnoy.

WHAT!? (When he was on the cover of Modern Drummer, the only thing good that they could say about him was that "sometimes louder simply means better.")

The sad thing is, he thinks that he won the debate. You are trying to tell me that Smells Like Teen Spirit is better than Metropolis? Hello??

Your friend,

Erik

P.S. Remember when the bassist knocked himself out at the Empty-V Awards?

True, true, anyone who writes about this stuff always starts out with I think, or I would say...

Anyway, I did rip on Zonders, but it is true that as a jazzier drummer, he is alot better than Portnoy. It's just that I'm not that fond of his style of drumming. Sorry for flaming him (I just like his style about as much as I like Neil Peart's) ^^^^ ChucK P.S. I don't have to spell it right, Dream Theatre bugs me though.

I am sorta under the impression that the statue on the cover of Awake is meant to represent the character in AMBI... I also sorta got that imporession from the DT Interactive thing...

I thought it was kinda fun. Walked outta there like we had all just taken a shower together. A really hot shower... Anyway, I was just glad for the chance to even see Dream Theater live and be up front as close as I was, it was like no other concert I had been to. So, I don't complain about the heat at all... I joke about it. I'm not going to complain when it comes to seeing Dream Theater live. I'll go thru just about anything for that chance.

I've never heard Carl drag the tempo, at least, if he did, I never realized it. His new work on Asia's "Aqua" shows that he's still one of the best drummers around. I really like the way he can work some of the best drum parts and fills into the songs that you'd least expect them to be...
