        In a new guitar magazine (new to me) called Guitar One, there's
    an article about JP's first ever gig. It cracked me up imagining the
    thing as I read it. He talks about how all of the kids in his
    hometown were atarting up bands, so the took his first guitar (he
    said it was plastic) to Kevin's (Moore) house to jam. His forst gig
    ended up being at a church he broke his g string and fell off of the
    stage, (or something to that effect). He said that he's fallen off of
    the stage at other shows (he said he just did recently because the
    stage just dropped off.) Heh, heh.

        Could you imagine being at one of their concerts and seeing him
    going all out on his guitar, not paying attention, and falling into
    the crowd. That'd be something to laugh about (as long as he didn't
    get hurt). BTW, it's on the second to the last page, if you want to
    look for it. It's got the same header as regular guitar mag's and
    practically all of the 12 transcriptions in it suck. (Smells like
    Teen Spirit is the first one, who needs tabs for that?)

        I just recently bought Rush's "2112" and wasn't impressed. It
    wasn't at all what I expected, I guess. Sorry, don't flame me, I
    really do like Moving Pictures, and all of this really old prog stuff
    is hard for me to get into. (I mean, 2112 was made before I was
    born). I really like some old stuff like the Eagles, Creedance, and
    Pink Floyd, but it can really tank a new genereation guy like me up
    on that weird keyboard shit right at the begining. (Maybe it's cause
    I was anticipating listening to King's X is why I didn't like it as
    much). I'll listen to it more later. Side 2, perhaps... (I changed
    it before Tears to listen to King's X)

        Out of the Silent Planet kicks butt, however, I love it! I think
    it's one of their better releases, not as good a GGtN, of course.

        Ahh... I finally got a hold of Asia, "Aqua" and I highly
    recommend it to you all. Unfortunatly, Whetton's off the list on
    this one, but I didn't even realize it until I read the album cover.
    Their new singer sounds just like him. Also the bass is a different
    style that Whetton's, too, and that kinduv sux. But as an added
    bonus, you get to hear Steve Howe on rhythmn (and some lead) guitars.
    He also plays the mandolin on a couple of tracks. Geoff Downes and
    Carl Palmer are still the respective keyboardist and drummer :)
    It's not really progressive, but if you like Asia, it's one of their
    best (except for Asia, "Asia"). The blend of music, background
    vocals, excellent drums and keys, and guitar melodies makes this one
    awesome album to listen to. My total anti-pussy music friend even
    liked it! (That's what he calls Adult oriented rock, pussy music)

    I have an idea about Lie. Considering the relationship between Mirror
    and Lie, I get "the mirror lie". And so it does, as the old guy (looks
    like a statue, i.e. he's the silent man as you say yourself) looks in
    the mirror and sees a young man. That gotta be a lie, right?

    Blech! Sunset through the inversion, smog, etc. of a large metropolitan area. Why don't I get a nice case of lung and skin cancer while I'm at it! Seriously, Sunrise over the Sawtooth mountain range presiding over a nice green field and fresh mountain air (depending upon which part of the state yer from) is the best! Also nice is when the sky turns a nice red color and you can see the moon waxing across the other end of the sky with the beautiful shades of twilight proceeding it. And then those damn Dominos Pizza Buffalos always fly over it and shit on it all! Fuckin' buffalos... Every time I reach for my camera, too...

    yeah, on top of playing lots of incredible stuff, he triggers keyboard parts, the synth bass in outside looking in, and stuff like that. he also uses some drum triggers because he doesn't want a ridiculously huge kit like portnoy's. he doesn't have any sdrum roll triggerrs or anything, its just as if he had another drum. besides, doesn't peart use midi stuff?

    Yeah, I have "I Predict A Clone." Deliverance's sound since _Stay Of Execution_ has been a more Queensryche-ish style. Check out "Renew" off of the _Learn_ album. The beginning dialogue sounds almost exactly as the beginning dialogue on Queensryche's "Electric Requim" off of the _Operation:Mindcrime_ album.

    When I first subscribed, some five-six months ago, there was something about why and what Ytsjam was. I am not positive, but on the album is it written as Yts Jam (two words)? However, I suppose that the name of the list can't have a space.

    What was said was that the name for the the list was even more "obscure." The name of the band, before they were Dream Theater, was Majesty. They had to change their name because there was another band under the name Majesty (am I right?). So this is how they got the name for the song and for the mailing list. In fact, correct me if I am wrong, and I probably am, but aren't there old demos that DT realeased under the name Ytsejam?

    I hope that I haven't made to many errors in giving information, but I do believe that the mailing list title is given because of their old name.

    Now, about the front cover of Awake. I am pleased with the responses. Just one question: What is the deal with the city in the background? It has to mean something. As for the landscape, it looks to me to be sand dunes or something. Comments. Can this be Scarred? I know that the statue is the Slient Man symbol. How about LSOAD? I feel that it has something to do with the black and gray color feel in the picture compared to the bright color in the mirror. What do people think? Anyway, whatever; just keep the comments coming!

    Thanks also to those who have sent things to me on how and where to get more DT things--this will help to add to my already four CD collection. I really appreciate it!!!!

    Sorry again for anything that I may have mentioned wrong about the Majesty/Ytsejam thing. Corrections are welcome!

    There has been much dicussion about John's bass and how poorly its been mixed. I am wondering how they got it screwed up on 3 CDs in a row!

    I have countless albums from the 70's that have much better bass mixing. Why can't, with all our better technology now, can't they get John's mix right? I mean, listen to Chris Squire's sound on Close to the Edge by Yes.... it has, not only some of the best bass playing I've ever heard, but such as GREAT sound. Its thick, rich, full, large. It can be not only heard, but felt. It has "bass" of "bass" and it also has the tinnyness of "bass." Imagine, for those who haven't heard Squire, Geddy's sound much larger and fuller, and LOUDER, and there you have it. In my opinion its the best bass sound I've ever heard. And this album was made in 1972! Much, much better in my opinion than John's sound.

    And its just not THIS album. Its many others, Rush's albums, ELPs, King Crimson, Genesis, they ALL have incredibly thick bass lines.

    So, why? :)

    Actuallym if the frequencies are below your hearing range, which most of Myungs bass output is, you won't actually "hear" it any better at any volume, you'll maybe FEEL it more since it's very subsonic and resonates, but unless you had good subwoofers you won't feel or hear a damn thing...

    Hey folks! Its your pakistani percussionist here again...well, if I were to put these two guys together and comment on who's better id have to say Neil.

    Ive seen Rush about 9 times and EVERY single time I am absolutely amazed at the Power and Precision Neil has on the kit. From a bar on his KAT pad, flying around to hit a 1" trigger on his right to kicking snare triggers with his feet...Its amazing.

    Ive only seen (emphasize seen, not heard or experienced) a DT concert on video (LiT) and what Mike does is amazing but its actually not as difficult as some would like to believe...Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the double bass fills and the delicate splashes and now hes incorporated many triggers on his set...its very refreshing to see this...especially when all we hear on the F****** radio is, well you know what im talking about...

    Ive just picked up a boot of Rush from their RTB tour and from the looks of it NEIL DESTROYS HIS KIT! He hits his drums so friggin hard im surprised it lasts a whole tour...Mike doesn't hit as hard, but that doesnt mean he can't.

    Both drummers are powerful, yet delicate at times...Mike with LSoaD and on Another Day, and Neil with as someone mentioned before Tears, Tai Shan, Available Light, etc....

    I would like to, however, see these two guys duke it out on stage :) Mike's a boxer right ? :)

    Really, you shouldn't think that 2112 is all old prog has to offer. In fact, I like most old prog more than 2112. I really liked 2112 when I got it, but its worn on me. Still good though.

    Old prog is a very hard to define thing... but the more mainstream (if you can really call it that) groups are Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Kansas. Other more obscure bands are ones such as Gentle Giant. Gentle Giant in particular has some of the best, and possibly most complicated prog out there. I only have one of their albums so far, but I am really getting into. There are about 5 guys in the band all each play many different instruments. I'll list all the insturments they play on this CD. (Its 34 minutes, kinda short, but definetly worth the 10 bucks I paid. They take that 34 minutes and make it seem like 60. A really good album.) Anyway, here are the insturments:

    Kerry Minnear: All keyboards, vibraphone, percussion, cello, Moog, lead and backing vocals

    Raymond Shulman: Bass violin, guitar, percussion, vocals

    Gary Green: Guitars, percussion

    Derek Shulman: Lead vocals, alto saxophone

    Philip Shulman: Saxophones, trumpet, mellophone, lead and backing vocals

    John Weathers: Drums, percussion, xylophone (the xylophone has a really cool solo.)

    Geeze, everyone except Philip Shulman plays percussion! Either way, these guys are really great prog, and are definetly recommended. I have Octopus, and have heard that they have better albums. This one is great as it is, so some of their other CDs must be better, which would be hard.

Also, if you have preferences, please tell me and I'll try and tailor to your current likings (meaning that I will not only put some songs that you should like, but also band's songs that you MIGHT not think of getting because you've heard its bad, when in fact, its not. :))

    Also, if someone would like me to, I will post a list of the bands I have and will dub so you can decide whether you'd like me to make up a tape and of what bands.

    Hello there all.

    Just one simple question, and I'm not sure if it's really been covered. I was just wondering if anyone knew where all the samples on the "Awake" disc come from. And on the "Live Images" boot there is a weird intro to "Pull Me Under" that also has some samples. I'm curious to know if these samples are perhaps from movies that influenced that guys, or if maybe the samples are from some other medium. (But it distinctly sounds like a TV is coming on during one of the samples in "Space-Dye Vest."

    Hope someone out there feels like doing some research.
