Sorry for the lame subject, but I didn't know how to word it!

I was on a flight from West Palm Beach to Newark the other day, listening
to Awake on my portable CD player (you can even hear Kevin depressing the
pedals on Space Dye Vest, it's that clear (well, not on a plane, it
isn't)), and had the cd case on the tray table. This guy across the
aisle from me says, "Oh, are you listening to Dream Theater?" I was a
bit taken aback, since most people have no clue who they are. "Yes," I
reply. As it turns out, he is friends with Rob Simon, DT's ex-manager.

We discussed the group for a while. This guy wasn't a fan, and hadn't
even ever heard them, though Rob had given him a Cd to listen to. He did
know stuff about DT through Rob, though, such as Kevin's departure from
the group, Portnoy's wedding in Long Island (which Rob had attended).
This guy said that they had auditioned a son of one of the members of
ELP--any truth to that? He said that Rob told him they are going to be
huge, and I was glad that I'm not the only one. Apparently, Rob Simon
left DT to become the head of Worldwide Music, which I have no clue
about. I made the obligatory Ytsejam mention, and told him that we
manage to somehow find out just about everything about the group (how the
hell does Jason Hartman have all those boots, anyway-one of the great
    mysteries of the world!)

Well, I know this is pretty worthless on the whole, but I thought it was
kind of random and cool, and my. . . BRUSH... WITH...DT. . . (sort of, in
    a very roundabout, well, whatever).

    Later,
    Dario

P.S. 6:00 is too a cool song! (And my dad can beat up your dad, to boot!)

out here in boston i've only been able to find (and this after a lot
of looking) the cd single for lie. while it's pretty awesome, i'm
wondering, isn't there one for caught in a web around somewhere? if
    so, what's on it?

Also, is the song "forever" i see listed on boots (i forget which one,
it was a 2-disc affair though) the same song as "to live forever"?

thirdly, a few places have had a version of the japanese import of
awake WITHOUT "eve" listed on the back and for cheaper. i would assume
that eve is in fact not on it.. is this the correct assumption?

Could you give a set list of the awake tour for Denver, Colorado and the RPM Warehouse?

I don't seem to have a lot of money at this moment, so can we just settle for a few tapes? Audio tapes, I mean? Lost in the Sky Denver Colorado -the Piitsburgh tape for now. Short on money. But, I'd still like those tapes. It'll probably be about four tapes, right? So, let's go with this: Tape 1: LitS/LitS tape 2: LitS(cont'd, if needed)/ LitS (cont'd if needed), or start the Denver, Colorado show tape 3:Denver, Colorado show (cont'd)/Denver, Colorado show (cont 'd if needed). I think I remember you saying that it would be $10 for LitS, and an additional $4 for the extra tape, because you're going to start recording the Denver, Colorado show on the same tape as LitS. So, I guess the total comes to $14. Right?

I'm surprised to hear that LaBrie likes Tori, though I knew of Kevin's love for her work. In fact, I had the impression that LaBrie wasn't impressed with Kev's taste in music when he chose to depart from DT... maybe I'm wrong there - got the wrong impression somehow. Anyway, I expect you'll find many DT fans also like Tori's work. Just ask Jenn :) I do, even though I'm not usually one to enjoy female vocalists -her raw emotion compels one to listen.

So far, the 2 that I have listed are cdnow.com and gemm.com. Both have direct support for http connections. The others that I know of that I know of are ranjit@netcom.com, compactdiscs@delphi.com, ktsonline@aol.com, and I know of cdconnection.com and cdeurope.com. I just have to add them to the list once I look over how to make the connections (mailto, ftp, telnet, etc) Anyway, are there others that any of you know of?

    The question was asked:

Are there some Ytsejammers that are also Tori fans ?

    (of course that is Amos, not Spelling) ;-}

My answer is - HELL YES!! Tori is an amazing musician. She has mostly a female audience, due to her themes of surviving male abuse and alot of other pro-feminine focuses, but men are among her fans - and count me in. I think you'll find most Dream Theater fans probably have a varied range of tastes. The original poster found it odd that someone would like both TA and DT. I don't find this odd at all. There are bands I listen that others of you might scoff at, and maybe vice versa. But I guess it proves that DT is a musical band that attracts all kinds of music fans, and not just your stereotypical "metal-head" - actually the stereotypical metalheads I have run into dislike DT anyway. Just a tidbit - I'm trying to prove my theory that "alternative" is a bullshit label. Anything that is an alternative to FM formatted radio bullshit is the real alternative. From Dream Theater to Phish - if the Top 40 mentality hasn't set in, it's a true alternative to me. So call your favorite local "alternative station and request Dream Theater!!

So far it seems that many ytsejammers have pretty diverse tastes, so I have a question: what about classical music? Do some of you listen to it and have any favorite composers or pieces? I'd be interested to try out some new styles and make my tape collection more complete. I like complex, intense and sometimes dark music. Does anyone have suggestions? It would be interes- ting to see what ytsejammers listen to, apart from Dream Theater. Also, just a thought: what if DT had a full symphonic orchestra at their disposition? Not just like the "A Classic Case" series, where an orchestra interprets some of the band's greatest hits: here the band would actually write the songs with the orchestra in mind, and perform along with it. They could also throw in some non-traditional instruments if they feel like it. What would a whole electric violin section sound like? I don't expect such a thing to happen (not anytime soon, anyway) but the speculation is interes- ting. Now where did I put the damn .sig file?

    DT and Tori Amos:

I haven't heard much of Tori's work, but I have been rather impressed with what I have. In particular a number of covers she did (Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit she makes this wretched thing listenable; also Led Zeppelin's Thank You, already a beautiful song as it was, she did quite a bit of justice to).

Tori isn't progressive, but then, some things don't need to be. Must be the keyboardist in me that's so forgiving ;)

A little off-topic, there was a post recently to NFTE (the Yes newsletter) that Tori and Jon Anderson had gotten together in Memphis and done a few songs. Though the location would make me more willing to believe JoHn Anderson (a solo country artist) was the one involved, one can dream :)

i don't remember saying anything about tori on yj, but i do love her. i have noticed quite a few prog rock and prog metal fans that like her, too. there was a big discussion on a.m.progressive about whether she should or should not be called progressive. personally i don't care how her music is labelled. it touches me deeply and she is obviously extremely talented both as a musician and a lyricist. i think the main thing she has in common with dream theater as well as other bands (king's x, queensryche, hell, even voivod) is that she combines evocative emotional statements and excellent musicianship in music that is new and fresh sounding, without fitting into traditional molds. when i listen to her, or dream theater, i can let the music take me to the place that the musicians were in when they wrote the songs, and experience the same emotions. to me, this is the mark of truly excellent writers and performers.

tori might not be for everyone on this list, but i highly recommend giving her a listen or two .

she only has two albums (forgetting the first metal one):

    little earthquakes under the pink

there are also an insane amount (55 i think at last count) of cd bootlegs, and at least that amount of import and promo singles. she must have recorded or performed at least 100 different songs. she likes to change her setlist around drastically every night, throwing in covers from everyone from prince to bad company to john lennon to jimi hendrix.

there is a tori mailing list. it is called really deep thoughts, and can be subscribed to my sending mail to rdt-request@something... email me for the address. i don't remember it.

    Hi there everybody!

I just got my copy of "Dream Theater - Instrumental". They got it in an ordinary record-store here in munich (germany) for about 25 $ :-)

I think it's really a fine piece of work, even if the sound is not perfect. There's lots of noise and the drums (especially the hi-hats) seem to have no pressure... but what the h... Songs like "The ones who help to set the sun" and the two pieces Petrucci has done for "guitar player"-mag are absolut fantastic.

We had great laughs about the bandphoto on the cover-inside. Kevin Moore and John Petrucci must have spent their whole money at the barbershop these times (1987).

All in all it's worth every cent - go get it for your collection.

Paganini is a fave of mine, although Holst's "The Planets" is another in my collection. Another cool thing that I recently got was the Yanni:Live at the Acropolis (an Xmas gift for Mom) which really impressed me, and an album by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet, both of which wouldn't really be considered classical per se, but are quite good (the drum solo on Yanni's album is amazing!)
