Do any of you guys get the official fanzine "Images and Words"? #5 is due in
February. I've been getting it since #1, and it seems pretty cool. I got
some stuff printed in #2 :-)
It has exclusive interviews with the band, and stuff from Mike Portnoy's
personal archives, etc. It's alright for 1.50 (uk pounds).
The address is mentioned in the Awake packaging, if you look hard.
I haven't seen the poster version supplied with the Lie 12" - what's it like?

I could't imagine I could meet an enthusiast of George Winston in this
list! Because I've thought G.W. and DT are playing quite different music.
But as he mentioned interesting analysis between G.W. and DT, I'm
going to linsten to G.W.'s album carefully tonight.
P.S. I like G.W.'s all album, but my fovorite is December,
especially the canon of P.(sp?)

It doesn't seem my post on Friday got to the group, so I'll try again (if anyone
got the original one please let me know, I'm retying this one):
One of the most fantastic pieces of the 20th century is Stravinsky's Rite
of Spring. Very rhythmic and hard-hitting, it was so unusual that on it's
premiere night sometime in the 1910's or 20's it started a riot in the audience.
Now it's considered one of the great orchestral masterpieces, it never fails
to give me goosebumps when I hear a great performance of this.
I'll also recommend Holst- Planets, which started the whole sci-fi movie style
of music (as someone mentioned earlier about John Williams). Each "planet"
conveys a different type of emotion or feeling, from dark and sinister to mellow and
surreal.
Orff- Carmina Burana, this is a powerful choral work, which you might recognize
from it's opening piece O Fortuna (its been in several movies).
Beethoven's 9th- My favorite symphony. Try the Karajan 1977 performance, which
is the most amazing I've heard so far. The most incredible thing is that Beethoven
composed the whole thing after he had lost his hearing!
Messiaen- Turangalila Symphony-
70+ minutes long, written around the middle of this century. Has a part
for one of the early electronic instruments, the Ondes Martentot, which adds
a unique surreal quality to the music. Very dramatic and somewhat eerie.
Also, there is a symphonic progressive rock group called Anglagard, who just came
out with the best prog ablum of the 90's- EPILOG. This music is just fantastic,
they have a mature and well-developed sound, including mellotrons, flute, cello,
guitars, analog synths, bass and extended percussion. They take somewhat of a
classical approach to composition, and the music is hauntingly dark and beautiful.
No prog rock listener should die before hearing this!

In fact, I like many bands, from progmetal (DT, QRyche, Cynic, Death,
Voivod, Toxik) to progrock (Marillion, Anglagard, Anekdoten) to 70s prog
(PFM, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes) to fusion (Return to Forever, Corea,
Michael Manring, Focus) to flamenco (Strunz and Farah, Paco de Lucia)
to jazz (Bela Fleck, Bolling, Bobby McFerrin) to rock (Pearl Jam,
Alice in Chains, Faith No More) to "alternative" (The Cure, 10000 Maniacs,
Sarah McLachlan). I even like some straight classical, though not enough
to listen to regularly, and country, though only mixed with jazz
(like Colonel Bruce Hampton and the ARU).
We progressive types, we like a lot of good music.

Aaaaaaaargh!!
If the UK tour dates that have been flying around on this list are correct, it
means Dream Theater will be playing here (Glasgow) on the same night as
Megadeth (15th March) . . . so much of DT's potential audience will be at
another show!
I will be at the DT show, but all of my friends, who would have also gone to DT,will now be going to Megadeth :-(

Hmmm...well my fave is Paganini. In particular if played on classical guitar.
Someone on ytsejam informed me of a cd which i bought as soon as i could go
down to the cd store. It is Elliot Fisk playing Paganini's 24 Caprices.
This cd is amazing! It's 79 minutes of pure blistering, complex guitar playing.
Some of my other faves are J.S. Bach, and Chopin.
I also love Flamenco guitarists like Paco de Lucia, or Paco de Pena.
Any other DT fans who love flamenco/spanish guitar music ?

I have always liked to see what other peoples favorite bands, I also tend to
notice that DT fans are so much more diversified as far as musical tastes.
Someone said a few days ago that one of the bands they liked was Pretty
Maids! I didn't think anyone else had ever heard of them? Are they still
together? What was there last CD?
Anyways here's my different list:

Not quite normal but....
I also saw someone write that most 'Metal Heads' don't like DT. I think the
reason is because of the keyboards. Most musicians who like HR or HMetal like
DT cause they can respect their musical capabilities, but as far as the
mainstream goes, I think it's the keyboards. Most metalheads hate Keyboards,
including myself, but the fact that KM and the new guy play the board like a
guitar and really do have talent, I respect it and Have actually grown to
like it.
I got into DT through my brother who copied WDADU when he first got it. I
hated it because of the keyboards, (being a metalhead and all), but when IAW
came out, my brother again got me the CD and I loved it. Probably alot to do
with James, I still to this day dislike the first singer. Anyway that's my
story.

Well, in the summer at the Shad Valley program at Carleton
University, I borrowed a Tori Amos tape from one of the program
assistants. I REALLY enjoyed the tape.
At that time, I didn't have any DT stuff but I definitely knew
of them because "Pull me Under" was playing and Petrucci was
all over guitar magazines. Now that I have copies of WDADU
(from my library!!!) and I&W and I went out and bought Awake
(and I want to buy WDADU and I&W) I am just awed at their
music and talent. I didn't think about the connection DT and Tori
have until it was mentioned here, but when I think of it, there are
really some connections especially their ability to mix emotion. I
can say for sure that her stuff is a really good listen. It appeals to my
musical tastes, anyways, and I'm definitely not surprised that a lot
of Ytsejammers and DT fans like her.
Here's a little background on me: I've trained in classical piano to Grade
10 RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music). I enjoy the greats (Bach,
Beethoven, Mozart...) and also Debussy, Tchaikovsky and various works.
I'm quite fascinated in Baroque music especially Bach's Preludes and Fugues.
I like symphony work as well as piano (Chopin!!). I'd recommend operas
from Berlioz, Puccini, and the "Valkeries" from Wagner. I've heard some
guitar work and violin work especially Paganinni (as someone else has
mentioned him.) Some of Petrucci's work/runs remind me of classical
music and for some reason Malmsteen!!
I just believe in having varied musical tastes: I am big esp. in
Progressive metal, but I also listen to pop sometimes, classical,
"party" rock (Van Halen), alternative and even dance once in a blue
moon. What _really_ impress me are musicians that are able to express
themselves both lyrically and musically. I think some fine examples
are DT, Tori Amos, Queensryche, Rush, King's X, and Galactic Cowboys
to mention a few.

Hi, I have a question. How many of you know of Asians/Orientals in

Is it THAT rare to find anyone of Asian descent in this
biz? When DT first came out I noticed John Myung was Chinese (or is
he Korean?) but he didn't get all the publicity-Petrucci did. But NOW
he is a couple of guitar and bass magazines and wow! his technique,
style, and musicianship is excellent!
If you're wondering... I am a Chinese and a guitar player...

One thing that I refuse to do with regard to my CD collection is classify

Hell, how could I resist a chance to ramble about tunes I dig? (By the
way, I am worse than a Jehovah's Witness when it comes to proselytizing
about Dream Theater--I push it on everyone (I even bought Awake for my
girlfriend for Christmas!))
Well, I dig: Rush, King Crimson (mandatory albums--Discipline, Larks'
Tongues in Aspic, Red), Cynic, Slayer, Carcass, Death, Marillion, Thought
Industry, Fates Warning, Pantera, Megadeth (up to Rust in Peace),
Metallica, Yes, Testament, and, of course, the King, Elvis Presley.
As for classical, I would recommend Pictures at an Exhibition by
Mussorgsky (the godfather of heavy metal!)--it's really cool, with many
"heavy" passages. For fans of guitar shredding, pick up Paganini's 24
Caprices. Bach's Goldberg Variations is enjoyable (any fellow nerdy
folks out there read "Godel Escher Bach" by Hofstadter--this piece is
discussed at length). Of course, the Fantasia soundtrack is a good
"greatest hits" collection, including Tocatta and Fugue, Night on Bald
Mountain, and an abridged Rite of Spring, all of which are musts for any
metal fan. By the way, if you ever though John Williams was original,
listen to Rite of Spring (among other pieces he has ripped off (though
enjoyably) wholesale).
Here's my .02 cents!
