Also, just a thought: what if DT had a full symphonic orchestra at their
disposition? Not just like the "A Classic Case" series, where an orchestra
interprets some of the band's greatest hits: here the band would actually
write the songs with the orchestra in mind, and perform along with it. They
could also throw in some non-traditional instruments if they feel like it.

    Yes. that would be nice
Deep Purple ( or John Lord ,their keybordist actually) did this way back in
the early 70-ties, and I think that record is very good. Somehow odd while
it is a sort of struggle between the band and the conducter(orchestra).
I do believe DT has the same capacity, at least I *know* they hade while
    Moore where in.
    bye for now.

There are a lot of them. Japan, reportedly, is the second largest music
market in the world, so there are many Japanese bands. But most of them
have not gained popularity in the rest of the world. Many of them are
good--there are a number of interesting progressive rock bands there.

    In-Reply-To: <9501101134.AA07879@anthor.arastar.com> Graham,

Good news! The band will DEFINITELY be playing the Forum in London on 15th March (I got my ticket today) so you can go ahead and enjoy Megadeth after all!

God I'm so excited! I had to miss DT last time around and I've been wetting myself ever since waiting for them to tour again. March couldn't get much better, first Queensryche on the 10th (at the Royal Albert Hall no less, cool or what!), then DT on 15th!!!! The icing on the cake now would be to get hold of a ticket for the secret gig - anyone heard anything yet?

    Cheers,

    Mark

    TO ALL SHIRT/BOXER ORDERERS:

OK, this is really getting ridiculous, I know. Please bear with me (don't throw stones just yet!). The reason for the delay is that the shirt company lost ALL my artwork in December and are just now finding the stuff to print. So, they should all be done soon, and I will ship when i receive them. Thank you for your patience (actually, Dream Theater shirts are already shipped, so everyone should have theirs as of now--except sweatshirts which are shipping tomorrow).

Boxers are another story. At first I was told that I could get cotton boxers in solid colors. This was not the case, and now I can only get red plaid or green plaid flannel boxers. So, IF you ordered boxers of the cotton type, please resend me an order for the flannel, in red or green plaid, or a message requesting your money back, and i will gladly refund it (people affected: Selee, Darmstedter, Loux, Karlsson(2 pairs), Moegling, Balkiewicz, Phillips(2 pairs), Mansfield,Yee and Cackowski). I apologize profusely, as I hate delays and changes as much as you.

Now you might be thinking, change companies man, their a bunch of screwups. Unfortunately it's not that easy-- they give me the best prices so I can do this at a reasonable price. other companies would charge me about $2 more a shirt, so i think the wait is worth it, at least it is in a larger picture. Thanks for being so patient though, you're all troopers!

Laters all, believe me when i say I'd like to get the shirts to you as soon as I can, and I will! Take care,

    Hi,

I saw some of your recommendations to Eric and I thought I'd reply...

    > My favourite classical CDs are... > >Vivaldi - The Four Seasons >Beethoven's 5th >Beethoven's 9th > I agree wholeheartedly! The above are three of my favorites. If you like those, I'd recommend giving Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony a listen. It's one of my very favorites, in the vein of Beethoven (though not quite as complex). Some other powerful symphonies are Mahler's 1st, Gorecki's 3rd (slow but builds a powerful atmosphere) and Dvorak's 9th (New World) symphony (another of my favorites). Those are all fantastic and well worth trying if you like classical music. Of the ones I mentioned, I'd say try Tchaikovsky or Dvorak first.

    > >George Winston (solo piano) Autumn >George Winston (solo piano) Winter into Spring, December, Forest > I'll definitely have to try out Winston. I've not heard of him before.

    > >Star Wars Original Score with John Williams and the Boston Pops > This 2-CD set is another mandatory one... it's Star Wars! And >it's the _whole thing_. Play this one in your car and during the space >battle themes you'll SWEAR a tie fighter is going to jump out in front of >you at any moment! :) > I got the 4CD box set with all three movie soundtracks plus a CD of extra outtakes and stuff. It's wonderful. The opening of the main theme still sends chills down my spine. :-)

    >Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves original soundtrack > The best movie soundtrack since Star Wars and Indiana Jones. >Truly thrilling themes and strong, heavy bass drive this soundtrack. It's >the perfect background music for playing Dungeons 'n Dragons. > Sounds cool. I was wondering if this was a good soundtrack. I've found a number of soundtracks that have interesting and powerful music. I like to listen to them while I work.

Batman original soundtrack This is the classical one, NOT the one by Prince. I really love the main theme and the moody atmosphere is kept up throughout the entire disk. It's very consistent and well written. The Batman Returns soundtrack is good, but not quite as good as the first one, I don't think. I've found I like Danny Elfman's soundtracks so far (he did both Batman soundtracks). Has anyone else heard any of his other soundtracks?

Henry V soundtrack This one is full of majestic, powerful themes that are not easily forgotten but don't get boring either. The music during the battle scenes is very dark and intense -- wonderful stuff! :-)

What the hell! Here's some of my favorite musical things or people.

Yes, Marillion, DT, Mike Oldfield, All About Eve, Crimson, Camel, Genesis, Gabriel, Hackett, Fish, The Church, Marty Willson-Piper, any Morricone soundtrack, Roger Waters.

It seems that Dream Theater is as heavy as I stray, although I do dig the new Savatage CD. And King's X is frequently in my player.

What's cool about Dream Theater is that they collect fans of many different genres of music.

Since everybody's doing it, so will I! Here are groups I especially like:

Queensryche, DT, Rush, Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Sarah MClachlan, FW, Galactic Cowboys, King's X, Harem Scarem (a Toronto band that has a WICKEd guitarist), Eric Johnston, Steve Vai, Malmsteen, some Pearl Jam, Metallica, Phil Collins, Amy Grant, Petra (a Christian band), Phil Keagy (a Christian guitarist-before king's x, Gerry Gaskill and Doug Pinnick played in his band!!! Very good stuff BTW), Alice in Chains, Ozzy, Living Colour, Tori Amos, Saigon Kick.

Also some bands with good stuff: Scatterbrain (c'mon, anyone??), Primus, Soundgarden, Megadeth, Kingsbane (another local Toronto act very much like FW), NIN, tool, Def Leppard (yes, I know...)... Mr. Big, (yawn) to mention a few.

Hey classical music is great too: Canon in D (Pachobel), "Claire du Lune" (Debussy) + more debussy, symphonies, etc, etc. too much to go on!!

One thing that Bunts/Andrew mentioned: MEAT magazine. If any of you fellow YTsejammers come up to the "great white north" check it out. It's a real cool magazine, with humble beginnings. They're about 4/5 years old, and their #1 issue had James Labrie (in Winter Rose at that time).

One last thing: I've heard some bits about Dixie Dregs (Steve Morse). Where can I get more info on them?

Well, with all this discussion about musical preferences and the diversity of DT fans, I thought this might be a good opportunity to ask for some suggestions to expand my collection.

Coming from a relatively isolated little town in the mountains of PA, I really didn't have any cool stations or music stores to provoke my interest in anything other than mainstream hard rock/ metal (i.e., AC/DC, Metallica, Motley Crue, Kiss, Van Halen)

Once I graduated college and moved on, I really began to discover other music, the most notable and rewarding being Dream Theater. Other non-mainstream bands I've checked out include Dig, Flotsam and Jetsam, For Love not Lisa, I Mother Earth, Love on Ice, Mind Bomb, Prong, Rage Against the Machine, Sugartooth, and Tool. I've also started listening to Jane's Addiction, which is definitely my favorite of the bunch. I guess folks probably classify this stuff as college rock or something, I dunno...

Anyways, I have absolutely *no* classical, jazz, fusion, Tori Amos, or any of the others that have been discussed here. The limits of my collection would be Eric Johnson, the Beatles, and the Doors on one end and Pantera, Nine Inch Nails, and Testament at the other end. Sorry for the length...but any suggestions are very welcome via e-mail !!!

    thanks in advance...

It's been great seeing everyone's lists of the music they like. It's nice to know that most DT fans are very open-minded and listen to all kinds of different music. Personally, my favourite bands are:

    1. Smashing Pumpkins 2. Pantera 3. Nine Inch Nails 4. Dream Theater

I listen to many other bands besides these (my CD collection totals about 150 and is growing rapidly), but those four are head and shoulders above the rest.

Wow. And I thought I was the only one who listened to them. The only band I know of that does Mozart on guitars.

As for my musical roots in the prog genre.. the first one I listened to was Queensryche - first Empire, and then was blown away by Mindcrime. PL is pretty cool - my faves are I am I and Disconnected. I actually got into DT from the radio - Pull Me Under never struck me, but the first time I heard the first 1:30 of Under a Glass Moon, I had to have it. The rest (a total of 6 CDs out of my 60 or so...) is history.

Other prog stuff I listen to is Cynic... just recently picked up some Dixie Dregs (Full Circle) and was very impressed... is their earlier stuff of similar/better quality? Also recently picked up a Marillion CD (6 of one....) and did not really care for it - is that CD indicative of or distanced from the rest of their stuff - it seemed too light for my tastes. Been meaning to pick up some Fates soon, as well....

I also listen to a decent amount of non-prog stuff - T-Ride, the aforementioned Scatterbrain, Tori Amos (where this thread started from...), They Might Be Giants, some Smashing Pumpkins, lots of Satch, I Mother Earth, Belly, NIN, Phish, Jane's Addiction, the Animaniacs CD :), and I'm eagerly awaiting Kev's solo project... Basically I'm scattered all over the hard rock/metal/weird genre.

I like some classical, but it really depends on the piece, and I'll admit I don't have much exposure. I like some of William's stuff (Star Wars), and have a personal liking for Wagner's (I think) Ride of the Valykries. Someone mentioned Elfman's work for the Batman movies - that was also nice. (On a decidedly non-classical note, I've been listening to the Natural Born Killers soundtrack lately - kinda weird, but cool, aside from the annoying rap tracks) From what I've heard, I'll probably give 'The Planets' a listen, as soon as I can find a copy.

On a world music notes, one of the people that I've converted :) has only one other major music interest - Gipsy Kings.

Absolutely. He is an amazing writer. He did the score for Nightmare Before Christmas. Not only that, but he SINGS the LEAD (a very big part). What can't this guy do? I've got to get those Batman albums. NOT PRINCE'S!

These discussion about musical tastes of the Ystejam readers is fascinating! Perhaps we're more open to varied musical styles than many, I don't really know. Although I'm definitely not a classical music fan, my tastes certainly vary from DT (I&W is amongst my favourite albums EVER, which also includes QR's Mindcrime unsurprisingly enough) right through the likes of Tori Amos and Kate Bush to ... Nancy Griffith - Country/Folk music!!!

Music that has been created and crafted rather than generated and regurgitated pumped out pap. MM-mmmm-MMMMMMMM d8-)

What is this talking about DT and FW doing an european tour together?

Could there be a heaven afterall ?

Woah...... If this is the case, it is bloody well exellent. Is it the same thing that was going on in the U.S, with FW doing 40 min and DT the full show ?

Hell, why not let'em both play 2 hours, I'm sure not one fan would mind coming home 2 hours later than planned. ( or 10 for that matter )
