For all of you that dislike it, skip this post, because it is not
really much to do with DT.

Now to the point : Magellan

        The questions are as follows.
I have The Hour of Restoration and love it ! Now, how will you
compare their newer stuff to this ?
Have they got a drummer on the other album(s) ?
Altough the drum programming is absolutely fantastic (the best I
have heard with a drum machine), it still lacks something. A bit
static perhaps, and a bit dry .

And over to something completely different. All of you should check
out Kansas pre '79. This is real prog, and you can see where DT have
    gotten alot of their inspiration.

Well, Prog on. See you !

    Greetings,

I find that I am quite pleased to see the great diversity in
my fellow Ytsejammer's musical tastes. It seems that those
of us with an open mind can enjoy just about anything.

I've pretty well just been lurking since the beginning of the
list, but I thought I'd like to put in MY .02 for a change *heh*

This is a reasonably comprehensive list of the music styles that
I contain in my collection. This is not, however, representative
of all the styles that I listen to. I find it easier to list
the styles as opposed to simply the names of bands...

Classical (all periods, especially Baroque and 20th Century)

    Electronic Ambient
    New Age Thrash Metal
    Trance Power Metal
    Dub Grindcore
    Funk Death Metal
    Rock Industrial
    Classic Rock Industrial Metal
    Progressive Rock Hardcore Rap
    Progressive Metal Broadway
    Traditional Jazz Country (some!!!)
Jazz Fusion World Music (you name it!)
Free Form Jazz Improvisation Classical East Indian
    Experimental Folk
    Classical Guitar Vocal

As far as the original post regarding Classical music goes, I suggest
seeking out some of the more "outside" sounding composers. One might
try Berlioz, Stravinsky, and of course Paganini!

For the very adventurous among you, give the 20th century composer
_Alfred Schnittke_ a try. Schnittke is an *amazing* Soviet composer who
has experimented with Polystylisms, Atonal, Tonal, and Serial techniques
-- sometimes all in one composition.

Be warned. Schnittke's music is very complex, and quite challenging to
appreciate, but for Dream Theater fans the step towards this level is
    probably not too difficult.

Calm down, guys! :) There's still a month to go before I begin production. I want to cut the order time as close to production as possible, to avoid long delays (anyone remember the Rush Video Montage? Well, I learned my lesson). I can assure you that if all 231 Jammers ask for an unreleased-stuff CD, I would be able to find a way to run that many copies...

I *WILL* be posting to Ytsejam (where else would I post?) when it's time to begin the fun! More news to come as it happens...

Well, after merely lurking for a couple of months (first-year of law school will do that to you!) I have decided to post my $0.02 on some things.

    1) I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of you about the format of this digest (re: non-DT content). Up until a couple of years ago, my prog knowledge/experience was limited to Rush and Queensryche. It was only when a friend steered me to DT, and later to this digest, that my horizons really expanded. Now, I am happy to say that my prog collection is rapidly expanding, and I have many, many CDs "on deck" because of the recommendations of fellow Ytsejammers. So, I am all for posting w/ non-DT content, especially when DT itself is sort of in down-time.

    2) As for the new limited DT boot that is being made, if the person who is in charge is reading this, PLEASE reserve me a copy (what are student loans for, eh?). Since I live in an apparently boot-free zone (the Bay Area--anyone care to correct me?), I would love to own a copy of this.

    3) Someone asked for a review of the Elan CD, "Firestorm." Well, I ordered the CD, and was VERY pleased. To me, it sounds most of all like Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures-era Rush. The guitar is especially Lifeson-esque (this from a non-musician, so bear with me). The vocals, melodies, and time-changes are all very, um, "catchy," making this a very, very listenable prog album, in the vein of IAW or Awake (as opposed to some prog, like Watchtower's "Control and Resistance which, while good, I don't find very "catchy"--no flames intended). Bottom-line, this is a great CD, a steal at $10, and I highly recommmmend it.

Thanks for listening to me ramble...

    Hey Steve,

Yes, I know this is a week old but I didn't think that anyone had responded about the fan club. I seem to think that if you give them the time they can get you whatever you want.

I had ordered the Images and Words "Flaming Heart" Shirt quit a long time ago, maybe the end of April last year. I kept checking the mail everyday and was about to give up on it, but then, all of a sudden, last November I finally received my order and I was TOTALLY ecstatic!!! It is exactly what I wanted, too. The button came with it, also.

I seem to believe that if you, the orderer, do everything correctly with the money and put the right address on the envelope, then you will eventually get everything you ordered. You just have to give them a little more time than usual to recieve a package.

I was wondering where my money went to also, for the first 2 months. Then, I thought I would be patient and not worry about expecting it everyday. But, I always kept track of when it was sent and when my check was cashed so I would know if something wasn't right. Their problem is that where they get the merchandise from, is not expedient in processing the orders. This is where the problem lays. They have to order too much stock to keep up with the demand.

So, just to lend an encouraging hand, it will get there, just give it time.

I don't know 'bout that... Wouldn't Images & Words have sounded just as good if it had been recorded by Motley Crue? <gd&r>

I agree with Ken - try to get a CD of an inspired performance. I bought some really cheap ($2.60) classic CDs as a learning experience. And you know what? I got what I paid for. They are as interesting as wallpaper. At least they can point to things I want to get good recordings of...

As a different (and more off topic <g>) example, I have at least a half dozen versions of Greensleeves (the "Stairway to Heaven" for the harp) by various harpists. A couple "suck big purple rocks with a peppermint flavored straw". A few are O.K. But one or two... aaahhh! (mmmmm...) <g> (But then, I'm not as allergic as most harp players...)

Greetings all - More news and views from the UK...

Good grief, you're away for four weeks and all of a sudden you get 500 unread mail messages. What a nightmare... I reckon I've just about gone through them all and digested the news, so here goes.

Great news on the UK tour dates. I'll definately be at the Rock City date and probably the Forum too. Anyone else going? How about getting together before hand for pizza or something? Get back to me guys and gals...

Not such great news about the private concert. This sort of thing really pisses me off. The people like you and me who would really appreciate this kind of event have to try and be lucky with competitions, while people in the music industry who've probably never heard of DT get to go and meet them. I guess this'll teach me for not joining the fan club, but I've heard so many bad things about it, can you blame me? I'll have to hunt down a copy of last weeks Kerrang! and see if something happens.

Good news about the Kevin Moore demo tapes. Whose the lucky guy in England with the recording equipment? :) I sure do envy you for getting a first generation copy, but my measily system would just be so inappropriate, it doesn't bare thinking about. I'm definately on for a copy. Cheers for all your work Jen.

I'm not sure if this ever came up, but the single of "The Silent Man" will be released in the UK to coincide with their tour here. As always, I'll buy a copy as soon as it comes out and tell you all about it.

Seeing as everyone's talking about their musical background.... Mine's mainly classical, seeing as I've been playing classical music on the piano since I was 7. I still play mostly Mozart, Rachmaninov(sp?), Beethoven and Ireland, but these days manage to find time for some Gershwin, Brubeck and Moore as well (some bits of SDV are a bit of a pain in the neck though). My original intorduction to Rock and Metal came through Gothy bands like early Cult, The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, The Cure, The Nephillim, All About Eve, Dead Can Dance...that sort of thing. I was well into Clannad in those days as well. I guess I still am. Tori Amos is a definate must IMO, and it was good to see someone mention T-Ride. Fire it up!!!:)

If anyone has any information on appearances DT are making in the UK to do signings and the like, can they please, please, please, please mail me about it. I imagine they must be doing something like that.

    That's all folks,

    Matt.

I've seen some footage of the damage on tv already, what a >terrible quake! My thoughts and prayers go out to you all! > >Take care, > >Jennifer ><air dance@aol.com> Thanks so much, Jen! I came back from Osaka right now (It took 13 hours from Osaka to my apartment!). I'm so tired, but I can say : DT IS ALL RIGHT! DT was in Osaka then, but the hotel they stayed was a little far from the epicenter (The earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, and in Osaka, it registered an intensity of 4 on the Japanese scale. In Kobe, it registered 6-7). I saw DT members were all safe, and surprised at the earthquake. Also, I know 3 Ytsejammer (T.Okuda, N.Shioda, and me) went to Osaka show, but we are all safe. I know about 15 Japanese Ytsejammer and almost of them are living in Tokyo area... IF there are any 'jammer living in Kobe/Osaka area (I checked the review of YJam, but I couldn't find any though), I really wish their safe...! BTW, DT canceled the show on 17th. At first, they were going to do the show but the promoter canceled the show (All of the members were so disapponted...). Traffic was held up and near Sankei-Hall, I saw many crack on the walls and windows of buildings. Over 2000 people were killed in the earthquake, and still around 1000 people are missing. I can't believe my eyes... DT flew to Fukuoka today, and the Fukuoka show will be done. I'll report the show on 16th in Osaka later. Thanks again to Jen, Mr.Higuchi, Kazuki, Atsushi, Mr.Nagai, Mr.Shimamura, Mr.Shioda, Noriko, and all people worried about us. Kaoru Kobayashi <gch06672@niftyserve.or.jp>

DT looking unhappy on stage? I disagree, at least at the concert I saw in Baltimore this Nov. they were very happy to be there. Mike always had a evil grin on, James and John P both smiled at me and my friends several times, and even Derek grinned a couple times. Myung? Well, he just kind of stood there and played some kickass bass with no expression whatsoever. :)
