    Message-ID: <199501170725.AAA20263@bud.indirect.com>

Okay everyone, great news about the Dream Theater CD's!!

The burner is HERE, so a few more specifics are available. I've
messed with it for the greater part of an afternoon, making test master
discs and getting to know the unit. Would you believe you have to have a
1 gig hard drive to even mess with it!! Good thing I had planned ahead,
or else we'd be dead in the water.

The actual availability of the discs is going to begin right on
time, mid to late February. The reason for this is that my process of
moving is... eh... moving right along, and it will provide for the burner
to be at my own residence full time. I will have limited access to it
because of full time work plus full time school, but it's there.

I will only be making one "type" of disc available at a time, and
in limited runs, due to the logistics of making the discs. I have decided
to conserve on cost of printed liners and just include basic liners plus
a jewel box, you guys with laser printers can add good liners if you
really want them. Cost will be $27.50 per disc for all Ytsejam members,
and I cannot go any lower without losing money. Those of you who buy boot
CDs know that this is $2.50-$5 below the average cost, generally
speaking. (Please, don't email me telling me about what "great deals" you
have gotten on boot CDs that are cheaper... it dosen't affect my cost for
the discs and furthermore, I don't care.)

Since good copies of Light Fuse and Set the Sun have not yet come
about, When Dream and James Unite will be delayed until a bit later on. I
think the first disc will be the "Subconscious" disc, of all unreleased
material, running as close to a full 74 minutes as I can run it.

I know a lot of people know how to "finance" large disc deals,
but since we're not dealing in quantities of 1000 here, it's just not
happening right now. These will be *very* collectable discs, since each
production run will only be 100 copies, and if I do re-issue a disc, it
will have a different packaging and CD appearance to differentiate it.
It's not a planned thing, the collector's item factor, just a consequence
of the manner in which I will be burning the discs.

Final disclaimer: I don't advocate bootlegging. It's against the
law in some countries and not in others. This is a private effort for the
use of hthe Ytsejam fan club only and not a release to the general
public. No royalties or pocket-lining will be taking place.

Oh yeah, and I'll be driving to Luxembourg to burn each disc! :)

I appreciate the interest of all you awesome Ytsejammers in this
project, and I hope the CD you will own as a result of it lives up to
your expectations. After all, since this is a fan effort, there will be
no mislabeling or superfluous editing of the material we value so much.

            More to come later!

Another band with at least asian ancestors was "Death Angel".
Check out the "ACT III" album, but beware (imo) of their other stuff.
And of course "The Organization" that's Death Angel after their split
with singer Mark Osegueda. They did one outstanding album in 1993
    which is self-titled.

Hope that helps - jerry :--)

It was said a few people died at the moment I saw news on TV
this morning. And now I knew that 686 people died(3 in Osaka, others
in Kobe area including Awajishima-island), and the status of over 500
    people remains unknown.

Actually they have several albums out, including the ones you
mention. I know they did one called 'Red, Hot and Heavy' or something
before Future World, but maybe it just got released in Europe or
Scandinavia. After the ones you mention they have released at least
two albums, one called 'Jump the Gun', the other I dont know.
Sorry that this information is lacking, but I never really cared about
this band, the primary reason I know anything is that they are danish.
Lets talk Mercyful Fate or King Diamond instead, that would make me
    talking!!! :)

What you describe here sounds like something off their recent release 'Mosquito'. Their earlier stuff is much different. I have all three albums and I think Mosquito is, well, not a dissappointment, bearing in mind that I read your warning before I bought it, but some of the songs really suck (pardon my french). It does have good songs on it, but I prefer the old stuff.

DT tour today was cancelled. That means DT members are safe. Also Kaoru and others are safe according to the messages on Niftyserve.

I've been seeing lots of recommendations for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition... I'd like to recommend a recording, by Riccardo Muti and the Philidelphia Orchestra on the EMI label. Not only is it a great performance but the CD also includes one of the most brutal performances of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring I've ever heard!

Good way to get two masterpieces with the price of one CD! I'd also recommend buying the score to Rite of Spring if you can follow music, if you really want to get a sense how amazing Stravinsky was. Dover publishes it for only $10 or so, and the classical music section at a Tower Records should have it.

As far as recommended recordings of other pieces mentioned here:

Herbert Von Karajan's 1977 Beethoven 9th is very powerful and intense.

Kleiber's Beethoven 5th is considered by many to be the definative recording.

Levine, Boult, Judd and Dutoit have great performaces of Holst's Planets. Boult actually conducted the premiere in 1918, and recorded it for the last time in 1979 when he was 90! He sure knows the piece well, and it shows- very memorable and moving performance.

Anyways maybe you could care less who performs a piece and just buy the cheapest one (which is understandable) but I just though I'd share this info in case someone is interested! I find that listening to various great performances really increases my enjoyment of a piece.

OK, if we're going to have a poll, I'd like to offer my suggestions before it starts. Awhile ago there was a Rush poll that worked really really well, and it went like this:

    - All songs were listed from each album - You were asked to rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10 ** it's important here to note that the songs should be rated in relation to each other, and not normal radio crap. Otherwise we'd get 231 people labelling every Dream Theater song as a 10 :-)

This way, each song gets a shot at being the best one. I'm sure there's lots of ppl on the list that don't have WDADU, and would never know how great a tune Only A Matter of Time is. Get my point?

Anyways, we could also (as was suggested) do a rating for favourite lyrics, favourite song for each instrument (ie: which song do you think James sang the best etc etc...), and so forth.

I am willing to do this thing, and I'm open to suggestions.

    Anyone?

A couple of things to say today :)

Surrounded . . . my all-time favourite song, by any band, ESPECIALLY live. I'm disappointed that DT have dropped it from the set list on this tour.

Previous concerts . . . both times I have seen DT previously, James LaBrie has looked so unhappy. He stood there scowling, like the music he was performing or the fans who had paid to see him didn't really matter to him . . he was just performing because he was obliged to. I know that DT are not Pantera, and I'm not expecting them to jump about the stage and look energetic and enthusiastic, but would it really hurt so much for the band to smile occasionally, just to let us know that they are not all terminally depressed, and they do actually appreciate our support? (Mike P. being the exception) There is nothing more depressing than going to see a band who look as if they are all in a bad mood. When the Awake tour comes to the UK, I want Dream Theater to look, and feel, HAPPY!!! :) :) :)

So, I guess by your standards, Parallels is one of the better Fates Warning albums? Unfortunately I've been ignoring most of the Fates Warning talk these days because I don't have a lot of money to be getting into a totally new band. I'm not familiar with all of the above bands, but I do know that many of the ones you listed are very hard to find in stores. There are a few excellent sources for prog and prog-metal that you can try (which I will list below). I know they at least have the following bands (who have been mentioned in Ytsejam digests recently):

Anglagard Anekdoten Asgard Black Jester Cairo Enchant Magellan Shadow Gallery etc...

BTW, all of the bands listed above are worth trying for prog fans. My favorites of those listed are probably Magellan, Anglagard and Anekdoten. I've had very good luck finding prog albums (like the above) at "Of Sound Mind" in Baltimore, MD. That store specializes in hard-to-find progressive music. They will accept mail-order calls too. (410) 529-7082 If you call, you'll most likely talk with Chris Lamka (the owner) -- he's very friendly and will help you find what you want. You can also send email to ranjit@netcom.com or LASERCD@aol.com and tell them which albums you want. I've had good luck with both of those people too and I trust them (though Ranjit tends to be slow in responding since it is only a side business for him). If you need more pointers to find the CDs, let me know.

Jumping on the King Crimson thread....I sent in for the "free" Vroom poster (It actually costs 2 bucks for p&h...almost free) and you can also get an autographed Vroom for 20 bucks. They also sell a Larks T-shirt for a mere 14 dollars. Vintage artifact from one of the finest prog albums ever. No one has a peep about Starless and the Bible Black. You haven't heard Crimson until your ears have graced the sounds of "The Great Deceiver." Cigarettes, Ice Cream and Figurines of the Virgin Mary! I think every DT fan should own some Kansas stuff. The Boxed Set that they put out last year has everything you need by them. (The Best of Cd has a horrible song selection) If that's too expensive for your wallet try either Point of Know Return or Leftoverture.

Anyone have any tour da tes for DT's return to the states yet? They must be booking dates right now ******************************************************************************** * "Ravage, plunder, see no wonder, rape, kill and tear asunder... * Chop the forest, plow it under..." I think I've grown to like "Impending Ascension" a bit better. BTW, "Impending Ascension" has been released domestically and I even saw an empty slot for it in a local, 'normal', record store. :-) Hopefully, they'll continue to get more distribution domestically. They are supposed to have a new album out this year, though I'm not sure when. Magellan has never toured, yet. When I spoke with Wayne Gardner at ProgFest, he said that they would like to, but they're not sure when they will. I don't know if they really have the support to do it yet. I'd love to see them live too!

I hope I'm not out-of-line for posting this, but I know there are guitar players on this list, and who might appreciate the chance to own a guitar model that JP finds so enjoyable.

I'm trying to sell my favorite axe to finance some other stuff, so please find a good home for this. Since JP plays these models, maybe HE would be interested :-) Anyway...

    For sale:

Ibanez USA Custom guitar basswood body (I think) "Wizard" thin maple neck bound rosewood 24 fret fingerboard sharktooth fret markers reverse headstock (rare!) 5 position pickup switch 1 volume, 1 tone knob H-S-H pickup configuration: Neck pickup: DiMarzio DP-150 "Double Whammy" medium-output humbucker Middle pickup: Ibanez IBZ USA C1 single-coil Bridge pickup: DiMarzio DP-102 "X2N" humbucker high-output humbucker (this pickup screams!) Low-profile Floyd-Rose whammy. All-black hardware.

Excellent condition. A few very minor dings to back of neck by previous owner. Does not affect playability, and I don't even feel them while playing. Small discoloration of finish on neck where the headstock nears the nut, when previous owner used a hanging guitar stand with rubber tubing.

I really want to get a Dream Theater poster. I was just wondering if there is a DT full-fledged poster that actually exists. If so, please tell me how to get it. Thanks.

I don't like buying albums I haven't heard before, at least without a good amount of reviews that I trust. Anyone out there hear this, other than a band member, and would like to give us a review?

Kevin Moore "KebMo'" A first album on the resurrected and venerable Okeh label? Not a bad start. Seems like he vacillates a little bit between wanting to be a Taj Mahal for the 90s ["Come on in my kitchen"] and a sensitive singer songwriter guy ["Victim of comfort"], but darned if I was disappointed when the disc was over, and a little ticked that it was so *short.* Moore plays a mean [if reverent] country blues. *** Now if I didn't know any better... Well, I talked with Round Table Entertainment (DT's management co.) and they said that the band and crew were in Osaka at the time of the quake. They had performed there the previous night and were scheduled to do a second show the night of the quake. Obviously, that was canceled.

Everone was at the hotel, apparently, but nobody was injured, only "a little shaken up."

This was the only cancelled show and everything else remains on schedule...

Hope our fellow 'jammers are okay...

If you're new to classical, I suggest you to with these recommendations and *don't* go for the cheapest versions. Some cheap versions are bargains (because of performance) but most suck. We're talking 200 hp suction here. The difference between a good performance (and recording) and a bad one can be the difference between whether you like the track or not.

To put this into DT terms, imagine the first thing that you ever heard by DT was a bootleg that someone made with a walkman which was having speed probs which had a tinny microphone. You get all of these highs, no bass, and part way through the concert someone threw up on the walkman. Sometimes you can actually pick out guitar parts, but it sounds like someone was playing the guitar out in a field with the volume low.

Let's say you're not impressed. A couple months later, a friend (who is ranting about the band) lends you I&W and Awake. Wow! This is great! It doesn't sound *anything* like that bootleg!!

Classical can be like that. Some recordings are mono recordings from the 50's (and earlier!). Some of the recordings are cheesy. Others are incredible. The conductor, orchestra, and recording technique make a big difference.

And for those who don't understand what difference the orchestra would make: which would you buy? A cover album of early Maiden being covered by DT or the same album being performed by Tiffany and Clint Black? :)
