There is another (older) album of Pretty Maids.
A friend of mine showed it to me a long time ago. As far as I remember it
is titled "Red, Hot and Heavy" and the first track is at least as powerful
as "Future World" (reminds me of a starting jet-engine every time I
listen to it :-) ).
Furthermore there is a well-known intro on it: the beginning of the
"Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff (da daa da daaaaa .... rrummms! [German
pronounciation] :-) -> this piece of classic music you can listen to in
every third tv commercial).
Early stuff of them and sold out long before, I think.
Apart from this I have another question: Can anybody pass me some
information of the bands "Psychotic Waltz" and "Lethal" ?
I've got this two albums "Everything Is Nothing" (?) and "Programmed" and
wonder, if there is some more music of them or rather if they still exist.
THX in advance.
MiWo
P.S.: Sorry for my poor English

Now to comment about it. It does remind me a lot of Dream Theater,
however it remindes me more of early Fates Warning, especially the
singer. It seems the singer also writes the lyrics, playes both
accoustical and electric guitars (both going on at the same time) and
bass. I think this would be extermely difficult to pull off live :) so I
wonder what they'll do touring. The drumming definetly reminds me of
Zimmerman from Fates and the singer remindes me of a mix between Arch and
Tate. This guy can go low AND high, however he sounds better (in my
opinion) in the lower octaves. I'm sure he'll get better as the band
matures. Anyway, about the music itself, it has all that he described and
more. From what I can tell, it is not like most heavy metal out there, it
is written in primarily major keys. It has an upbeat, nice feel to it
(without being commertial.) The interplay between the two guitars is
great also. No keys, except on a few pieces (which weren't credited with
someone playing them) so I'm guessing the guy who plays all instruments
except drums played them but felt that they were too of a small part that
he left them out. So in this sense they are more like like Queensryche
or Fates Warning. But unlike QR and FW they don't have many catch
phrases. I haven't really looked at the lyrics much so I can't
comment on them. Bad news, its only 40 minutes, the longest song
being 10 minutes with 6 songs total. Oh well, it was free. :)
Oh yeah, the guitar playing seems very classically influenced, and is
very fast in some places.
Anyway for fans of early FW, DEFINETLY get this CD. (I happen to like the
only early FW I've heard, Awaken The Guardian.)

Yeah, it also has a really cool cover. (Which was what made me buy it.) I
saw all the FW albums, didn't know anything about any of them, so I just
picked out the one with the coolest cover. It has turned out to be one of
my favorite albums, and I still think the cover is one of the neatest
covers out there.

Been away from the list for awhile and it's good to be back. Just thought
I'd provide some more exposure on the favorite bands thread. Since I come
to DT basically from the prog side, most of my influences are prog and
jazz/fusion. The stuff I'm carrying to work with me (is this a good way
to gauge current habits or not?) is Dream Theater, Rush, Queensryche,
King Crimson & Sylvian/Fripp, Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, Shadow Gallery,
and Magellan (I'm listening to this right now.) Other stuff left at home
includes Beatles, Allman Bros, Doors, Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra,
Blood,Sweat & Tears, SRV, Allan Holdsworth, Yes, Andres Wollenwieder,
Pink Floyd, Captain Beyond (70's Prog-Metal, great stuff), Flash, ELP,
Tull, CSN(&Y), Santana, Hendrix, Zappa, Return to Forever, Uriah Heep.
One of the things I'm curious about is other people's favorite live
performances that they might have seen. The top five (that I can actually
remember) would be:
1) King Crimson - Tampa '74
2) Dream Theater - Denver '94
3) Zappa/Mahavishnu - Cincinnati '72
4) SRV/Jeff Beck - Denver '91
5) Flash/Captain Beyond - Dayton '72
One of the DT exposures I had while I was missing the list came as a real
surprise. I was attending a musical/theatrical performance at a local high
school with my daughter. The show was a bunch of comedy skits and musical
numbers loosely woven together. One reoccuring theme was an old man telling
stories to his grandson. After an intermission, The grandpa is dozing in
his armchair and the kid is rocking with headphones. The old man rips the
the phones out and 3 of the performers crank out a great cover of YTSEJAM!!
It was great looking around seeing reactions in the audience! Needless to
say, this was the highlight of the show for me.
That's it for now. If anyone has any theories on why John thinks that Guy
Smiley is the best Muppet representation, I'd sure like to here them.

Very good choices on today's influences, ytsejammers! (i.e. Rush, DT, FW,
QR, King's x, Galactic Cowboys, Marillion, etc.........
A couple more progressive suggestions: For one, I think one of the most
important influential progressive bands that should be included in every
one's list is Kansas. Forget the usual three songs (Carry on..., Point of
Know Return...., Dust.....). Listen to ALL of their stuff, and then a
little light bulb flashes and you realize, "Oh, so this is where the DT
boys get there ideas!"
Also, for you Galactic Cowboy and King's X fans, another group (which I
have seen mentioned on the digest once or twice before) that you all would
dig is Atomic Opera. Very cool stuff! A perfect cross between the
composing of King's X and the Cowboys combined. Not AS GREAT songs, but
still good stuff.
Classical: DO NOT forget Mussourgsky's "Pictures at an Exibition!"
Possibly one of the greatest concept (album) pieces ever created! Others I
support are, of course, Beethoven's Syphonies, "Turangalila Symphony" by
Messiaen, "Carmina Burana" by Orff, and others......
One more thing: I particularly LOVE the sound track to "The Natural." So
damn emotional. Oh, also, even know this movie sucked the big one, another
really great soundtrack is the soundtrack to "The Rocketeer." It was
composed by the guy who wrote that 80's hit song "I love LA." Oh what's
his name.....Randy......Oh, I forget now. You get the point.
Enjoy!!

You folks are great. :)
I checked my mail this morning to find twenty people offering to be dub sites
from all over the world already! :) At least it looks like we're not going
to have any problems finding volunteers! ;)
So far, I think I've heard from every country on YJ (that I know of) except
Japan and France (c'mon guys! hint, hint ;), but once I do, then we'll be
ready to get the ball rolling!
I'll be e-mailing all of the dubbers who have already written to me
expressing their interest in the project this weekend with further
information. Please be patient with me, this may take awhile because that's
a lot of mail to answer! :)
I'll keep you posted! :)
Thanks for your help,

Fessed up??? Fessed up??? Ahhh not really....I am doing you a *FAVOR* by

"fessing" up (which btw was in reply to your FIRST and ONLY e-mail, so

did hear publically yesterday) that I got bogged down with the
holidays/finals and WAY too many trades etc. etc....I wouldn't really call
this fessing up...
I have had successful trades with many people on this list (Mike Burstin,
Steve Gorny, Jason Hartman, PJ Holloway, The Clairovoyant, Mike Backof and
others) and hope to continue to do so more in the future....
Anyway, I've taken up enuff bandwith with this, but I felt my credibility
was being challenged, I pride myself on being a good trader and hope others
think so too...

Ok, I saw Dream Theater back in something like July of 93 when they
hit the State Theater in Detroit. I love attending concerts in venues
of that size. During the show, they played something that they said
might be showing up on a future album of theirs, and to be honest, from
what I remember it really sounded like the erotomania/voices part of
a mind besides itself. Anybody know if they really did play this some
back then? I can't think of anything else on Awake that it would have
been, but it could also have been something that hasn't made the album
either. BTW, in the unlikely event that anyone managed to record that
show listens to this, I'd love to hear from you.

Well, I don't live there but I visit occaisionally since my parents
are out there. If it's the radio station that I'm thinking of (and it
probably is, there was only one radio station in Denver that actually
played decent music from what I remember), it changed formats. It
became either a light rock or a top 40 type, not sure off the top of
my head. Last time I was out there (March '94) was the last month
before they switched, and they kept advertising it as if it was a good
thing. Guess they decided they couldn't survive in a market where 90
percent of the stations are country.

Greetings, 'jammers! Since I am relatively new to this lister<have been a lurker since Nov.>I thought I'd take this opp. to introduce myself<briefly>and list my musical likes/influences.
Lyrically, I'm partial to Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy<esp. OaMoT and ACoS>but it's the music that matters. Here's my list of faves:
A Mind Beside Itself<esp. Voices>
Only a Matter of Time
A Change Of Seasons
Learning to Live
The Mirror/Lie
As far as non-DT goes it's mostly metal/prog like Queensryche, Fates Warning, Yngwie, Cynic, Pantera, Metallica, and occaisionally Yes<non-Rabin>. I am alsoa big fan of both Rush and Joe Jackson. I like Tori Amos, but I'd rather hear just her and the piano, w/o all that stuff in the background, y'know? I like Mozart,Bartok, and Berlioz. The other genre that takes up most of the air between my headphones is-dare I say it?-showtunes. Yes LOTS of showtunes. Les Miserables or Jesus Christ Superstar is good to cut your teeth on. Phantom of the Opera<like most of Lloyd Webber's stuff>is good, but can get a bit silly. If you like these, check out Stephen Sondheim's Sweeny Todd,if you dare, as well as Sondheim's other works. He is a MASTER.
Next time you're at Tower Rec., pick up The Chance's 6 song EP. You wont be disappointed.
Sorry so long. See ya.

I'd have to include my biggest entry in this list..."Surrounded." I know
a lot of people on the YJam don't care much for this song, but I still
think it is DT at their most brilliant. There are so many layers to this
song that I still hear something new in it every time. I understand that
many have written it off as just another AOR ballad, but I think that's a
mistake. It still gets to me every time.

I've got one :)
It's a "Best of" album. If you'd like more info, email me personally, since
I don't think this would be of general interest to the list :-/

As long as I'm thinking of it, Loudness was a band that was big in Japan and made all<?> their records there, but I don't think they <or at least not all of them> were Japanese by nationality. My reasoning for this is that Ynwie's current singer, Mike Vescera <Italian?>, was formerly in Loudness until he got the gig w/ Yngwie. If I'm wrong let me know.
Just a tidbit. Sorry for the non-DT content.

As an import I believe... great band huh? (In fact I'm listening to Impending Ascension right now.) For anyone who doesn't know about these guys, they're a lot like DT, however more keyboard dominant. And one of the best things about this band is that you can pick it up at a local Best Buy or Blockbuster Music store... :)
Now I'd like to turn subjects about something that has been on my mind for the past few days, since we are all talking about other bands that we all like. I'm surprised to see that there are few people in here who listed King Crimson in their list of great bands. I find this odd because DT reminds me so much of KC, especially the 73-74 line up with Robert Fripp, David Cross, John Wetton, and Bill Bruford.
There are a LOT of similarities to the two bands.
For those who don't know much about King Crimson, they are arguably the first heavy metal band. They're also the first art rock (progressive) BAND. (There were a few people before them, such as Zappa, but he wasn't really a band.)
They remind me a lot of DT because I just bought their 4CD set from the 73-74 era of KC that is all live. This is an incredible set, as it has almost 300 minutes of live stuff, and about 1/3 of this is IMRPOVISED stuff. Now we all know that DT likes to improvise sometimes. However KC takes it to extremes, they always play a song differenltly than they played it have before. (No two reditions of the song sound the same.) And they have incredible sonic power (like DT) live its really unbelieveable. They can jam on for 10 minutes and it never gets old or wanders. Plus, their studio work is some of the best I've ever heard. Erotomaina reminds me a lot of Larks' Tongues in Aspic era KC. Only in these songs can you hear weird time sigs such as 17/16. :)
I'm surprised that DT has never mentioned KC as an influence because these two bands are so much a like its not funny when you think about it.
So, who here likes KC?
And for those who have never heard KC, I'm not sure which album you should go with. I started with Larks Tongues, but honestly its not a starter album (because, like I said, its 40 minutes of Erotomaina. :)) A lot of people recommend In the Court of the Crimson King as a starter album the problem is that it is much different than Larks because it has a totally differently lineup than that album (Court features saxes, flutes, lots of mellotron, whereas Larks features violin, viola, and more guitar, plus features a different singer and bass player.) A lot of people recommend Red for a starter album because its just guitar, bass, and drums and is really heavy metal. Or I guess you could try for the early 80s version of the band, which is totally different than the other two versions and pick up Discipline, a good album with some really funky beats. I guess it all depends on what kind of music you like, however with KC its hard to go wrong.

Hi! I just came back from the DT first show in Japan. Set list was as follows (It's almost same as US shows): Pull Me Under 6:00 Take The Time Caught in a Web Lifting Shadows Off a Dream Improvised Jam The Mirror Lie Another Day A Mind Beside Itself <encore> Metropolis part - 1 James was in bad condition - He caught a bad cold. And he couldn't sing high-tone parts. But Lifting Shadows and The Silent Man were very impressive. I really hope James will get well early... Also I hope DT will play some songs from WDADU. I'm very glad that Derek could play the solo part of Another Day! It was not cheezy.:) In the end of AD, he didn't copy Kev's phrase. He played his solo, and it was good solo, I think. I'm going to send my list for trade to all people who wrote to me about it. Now I'm trying to record Japanese shows, and I will add them on my list. So, please wait until the end of Japan tour. By the way, before today's show, some Japanese Ytsejammer got together. It was very exciting! Today I'll go to Osaka. I'm going to report Osaka shows, too. Bye for now, talk to you later! *********************************************************************** * " As I awaken from the longest night. I am concerned about the many jammers who are posting about their favorite types of music. I think it would be more practical just to write about the bands/composers you like, because it seems to me that a lot of people's lists are so long that they're not posting their favorite bands, but any band that they've ever heard any music by and even *remotely* liked. It's one thing to have eclectic tastes, but to force all the jammers to sift through pages upon pages of your "favorites," not to mention using up valuable list space is getting a bit ridiculous. Learn to summarize.

I've got about 250 CDsanand a wide variety of tastes, so here goes a relatively short list. Alice In Chains, Van Halen, KISS, Green Day, Gin Blossoms, Anthrax, Prince, Steven Sondheim, Pop Will Eat Itself, Pearl Jam, Junkyard, Crash Test Dummies, Danny Elfman, Stone Temple Pilots, Extreme, Bob Dylan, Phish, Yes, Rush, Sheryl Crow, Candlebox, Mrrisey, Live, Helmet, Living Colour, White Zombie, Vai...oh yeah, and Dream Theatre. Those are just a few of my favorites, but I like just about anything that has any kind of musical or entertainment merit. By the way, I also have all of Scatterbrain's albums, though I don't count them among my favorites, and I also really like T-Ride's album (did they ever put out another?) And I hilyly reccomend the Planet's to whoever was thinking about it. Nice thread, very interesting. Later, SLAY
