Pull Me Under and Surrounded were the songs that got me hooked. And

That just means we like a lot of different bands. We are very open minded
here. So we talk about a lot of DT related bands. I agree with Doc when
there is no new DT info to report lets talk about something else instead.

I'll mention Space Dye Vest, but I got a somewhat different reaction. The
first time I heard it was the night I got the album, around 2AM or so,
after a really long shitty day, I wanted to kill myself after hearing
that song. It was so beautiful, in a strange sort of way......

A few of those CDs you mentioned you'd probably only find at progressive
rock/import dealers. There are two online dealers I've dealt with and been
happy with:
ranjit@netcom.com
lasercd@aol.com
Ask for a catalog....and don't forget Anglagard if you are looking for
new prog to liten to (best of the 90s in my opinion).
Since Divine Regale is from the same town I live in (Dover, N.H.) their CD
was easy to find :) but I think you can get it directly from the band, email
Chris at parallels@aol.com.

Hi-
I have heard a lot of talking about Psychotic Waltz and I have to
speak up on what I know (I may have posted this already a long time ago):
I live in San Diego, and I heard they were a good prog metal band. I went
to see them, and they were not progressive by any definition I have heard,
especially my own. They were good, but very straightforward. My friend
talked to the drummer and the drummer said that their first two albums
were progressive but "you can't sell a million albums with a million
time signature changes," so the new album was "less masturbatory." Yes
these are direct quotes. I guess they were only playing new stuff live.
So if you are into the prog thing like me, avoid the latest album (and
all subsequent albums, judging from this guy's attitude). Personally,
I think playing the same riff over and over and singing the same lines
over and over or playing a 3 minute minor pentatonic solo over the same
three chords is a lot more "masturbatory" than actually trying to be
creative, but I won't get started talking about that lest I rant and
rave and overload everybody's mail servers.

Hey all.
I just picked up FW's Parallels last week and I have a couple of comments.
First, does Queensryche know about this album, and what does their lawyer
have to say about it? :) I'm mostly kidding of course, but the sound is
very similar. The only other albums I have are No Exit and Guardian, and
Parallels is a huge turn-around. I do think that the vocals are much
better, being more in his range. Very nice.
Second, I was looking through the obligatory "Thanks to..." section,
looking for Dream Theater of course (which they spelled Dream Theatre --
<gasp!>) when I came upon something unexpected. From Gibson U.S.A. they
thanked Dave Timmons. "Wait!" I thought. "I know that guy!"
He went to my high school, albiet a few years before me. His younger
sister (who is now a neural surgeon) was my baby sitter, his dad
graduated with my mom and is also our mailman, his grandparents drove my
school bus and tought me in Sunday school when I was little, his
grandparents also live across the street from my sister, and his grandmother
and mine are best friends.
Did I mention that I knew this guy?
I knew he was working for Gibson, but I didn't know what he was doing
there exactly. Geez, whatta job, eh?
Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with everyone. By the way, does
this mean I'm famous? Nah, didn't think so.
By the way again, you wouldn't be able to read about this stuff on other
'less-friendly' newsgroups due to strict policies....
Toodles!
Glenn
P.S. Best Buy (I actually found WDADU there for $16.99 labeled as
'classic rock' and 'Import') and Circuit City both spell DT as
'...Theatre' on their plastic CD seperators. The fools.

Hey, man, I like Dream Theater when I want to listen, but when I want to
dance, man, I'm "Stayin' Alive" and going to the "YMCA!" :)
Actually, a friend and I had an entire school (not our school; we were at a
prom) talking about us when we discoed to music that was not disco. It was
pretty cool. Moshing isn't for me! :)
BTW: I recently got Impending Ascention by Magellan and am quite
impressed. It supposively is going to be or has been released in the
United States. I think fans of Dream Theater (esp. Images and Words and
When Dream and Day Unite) or Fates Warning would love it.
Also BTW: Does anyone know if Magellan plans to perform anywhere? I'm in
Pasadena and would love to see a show....

Scott Bell wrote of not enough DT info on this mailing list. I
think there is plenty of info here. Maybe the solution to this problem
would be to set up a telnet site. At a telnet site, people could "chat"
back and forth about DT. Maybe even some of the guys from the band could
make guest appearances. It's just something to think about.
P.S. hey drummer dude!!!

hi ytsejammers...
been awhile since i posted but i had a three week break without email and
im trying to catch up on ytsejam digests...only 11 more to go!
there are several things i want to respond to:
AWAKE vs I&W:
the albums are two different styles for which i am very grateful...i hope
DT always keeps changing as long as they stay out of the Top 40 mentality of
"music". i love both albums and cant decide...AWAKE is defintely a sort of
morbid album which i listened to a lot last quarter because that was the sort
of music i needed...i love I&W because of the positive messages i get out of it
..plus, the music of both albums is the best ive heard...i like the
"heaviness" of the new album because im also a metallica fan but i think the
distortion sounds that both John P and Kevin use are more interesting than
Metallica...(Note: i play keyboards, any keyboard players out there looking for
cool distortion sounds...check out a Korg O1/W....best ive heard...i can tell
you how to get the most out it too...) OH YEAH...i listen to Awake often in
different orders than the cd comes...i really like Mirror right after Space-Dye
Vest and A Mind Beside Itself last...Wait for Sleep right after Surrounded is
pretty cool too...
IME:
they suck....'nough said.
oh yeah...that parody of PMU...it ruled, thanks for posting it...and Tori amos
..she's ok...dont listen too her that much...
CLASSICAL:
now we come to the topic i really want to tak about...i have listened to
classical music for loger than anything else and i still think its about the
best stuff ever written from a standpoint of musical form, etc... i hear a lot
of classical influence in bands like DT and RUSH which is why i like them so
much. for instance: Erotomania, that one guitar riff is straight out of Bach
and then John repeats it several times at descending pitches (a very classical
technique called sequence)... my music tastes in general are pretty diverse and
my taste in classical is the same... generally, my favorite composer is JS
Bach who IMHO is a god. my music theory teacher said the other day he was
talking with his colleagues and one of them said "you can find bad mozart, and
a lot of bad beethoven, and tons of bad schubert, but you just really dont find
any Bach that is written poorly..." i have to agree with this...in general,
i think that most Baroque music (1600-1750) is well written. for all you guys
out there whose tastes lie in the dark, complex, and morbid areas, like the
person who started this thread, then check out the following:
Bach Organ Music: this stuff kicks a**...very heavy...very complex...
often sublime though. this is my absolute favorite music,
i recommend finding copies (yes multiple copies of the same
pieces) of the Passacaglia in Cm, Fantasy and Fugue in Gm,
the ever-popular Toccata and Fugue in Dm, the "dorian" Toccata
and Fugue, Toccata Adagio and Fugue in C, and the "cathedral"
Prelude and Fugue in Em. These pieces are the biggies. Best
all around organist for playing these works is MIchael Murray
on albums like "Bach at Methuen" and "The organ at St John the
Divine in NYC". Ask for it at your local cd store. Other
good Bach interpreters are Virgil Fox (albums Heavy Organ I and
II), Marie Claire Alain, and Simon Preston.
Other organ music: the organ literature is chock full of absolutely
heavy works that will overload your senses. Try things like
the Symphonies of Widor and Vierne (Michael Murray rocks
on "Vierne Symphonies at St Ouen"). Also, Buxtehude wrote
similar music to Bach. Mendelsshon organ music is hard to
find but definitely the best stuff he ever wrote. The
Saint-Seans Symphony No 3 is a piece for organ and orchestra
and very energetic...look for the version recorded at Liverpool
Cathedral. Franck is another really dark organ composer...
again Michael Murray has the best recording ive heard.
Symphonic works: for all you headbangers, try stuff like Pictures at
an Exhibition (great organ version also by Jean Guillou or
check out the prog-rock interpretation by ELP), Brahms
Symphonies 1-4, the 1812 Ouverture (Telarc version), the
Willaim Tell Ouverture, etc, etc...
Dark stuff: check out Gorecki's 3rd symphonie and his other stuff,
i also like a composer named Part (two dots over the 'a')
if you like dissonance, try Stravinsky and the like...
light stuff: a lot of good classical music is pretty light too...
the over-played Pachelbel's Canon in D (oh yeah, one of my pet
peeves...Pachelbel wrote much other perfectly good music like
his organ works, it just NEVER gets played)...try some of the
"early music" stuff like renaissance madrigals or dances, lots
of it uses really ancient instruments...gregorian chant is nice
...mozart is good but it all sounds the same...i could go on
for ever...
the moral: try lots of different music, go to your public library,
they have tons of this stuff and you can listen for free
then buy what you like...you can write me if you'd like
more info ...and more opinions ;)
NOTE TO THE PERSON WHO LIKES THE ORCHESTRAL VERSION OF TOCCATA AND FUGUE IN DM:
that being the version on Fantasia...this transcription is really
dissappointing and doesnt begin to do justice to the original organ piece...
try getting this cd: THE DEDICATORY RECITAL on THE GRAND CALVARY ORGAN...
this is the 13th largest organ in the world with 11500 pipes and the low D
pedal points in the Toccata rumble at 19 and 9 Hz with enormous intensity...
bottom line: a bunch of string basses dont even compare!! check it out...
these opinions are all my own and not meant to ire anyone...
NOTE: the Web home pages is a new feature on our server and i talked the
SYs manager into implementing it...so this is a sales pitch for people to use
this feature so it doesnt go away...my page is still undergoing major
renovation so bear with me...thanks
"show me kindness, beauty, and truth...im learning to live."

Also, if you have a quoted reply like I have (from William Wright) in this

Then nobody has any idea what your responding to. That's pretty irritating.
I'm sure he means well and I appreciate the time and effort he puts into

I'd rather have a format like Ytsejam and live with the negative things: the
flames, the people who have huge quoted replies and the topics that
I don't have any interest in (like seeing 10 million lists of everybody's
favorite bands). These things are no big deal and are worth the fact that
people get to say exactly what's on their minds.

Just to smooth the edges on the Pretty Maids info:
_Red, Hot and Heavy_ has 6 members in the band - 2 guitars and
keyboards. Talk about having your cake and eating it. (I picked this
up on CD in Germany, btw, if anyone wants a quality dub)
_Future World_ is the name of the CD with the songs JennieBear listed.
_Lethal Heroes_ was released as _Jump the Gun_ in Europe.
_In Santa's Claw's_ was a Cristmas EP with some live stuff, and a new
metal Merry Christmas/Jingle Bells medley - pretty fun - great for metal
DJs around winter holidays.
_Sin-Decade_ did not have a keyboard player :-(
I believe _Stripped_ is an acoustic EP with Thin Lizzy covers.

composers.
I want to make sure those of you who enjoy the incorporation of
classical music in today's rock/metal are aware of a free ~monthly

As far as favorite classical pieces - one I'd love to hear done by our
favorite metal bands is Presto Agitato - the 3rd movement from
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. This is quite different than the
beautiful 1st movement most are familiar with. This one is blazing
fast, and I'd love to hear what a virtuoso guitarist would do with it.

You seem to know a lot of classical music and music in general, so how
would you say that Dream Theater, in terms of composition, compares to
classical works of Beethoven or Bach? From the little I know, Beethoven
tends to have made his symphonies (and maybe other works of his) a little
thin in terms of arrangment of voices. I am wondering if this is true
with other classical composers and/or Dream Theater themselves. (I really
can't hear what they're talking about, however I think I understand what
they're saying. ex. They leave certain instruments open, out in the blue,
when they should have backing by other parts/instruments, and sometimes
the bass to treble ratio is all messed up. Understand?)

Why not just have a designated channel on IRC? Gotta admit that the price
is right.

Hi, there,
I'm in Tokyo area, so I don't know much.
> I just heard about the big quake over in Japan and I was wondering if all our > YJammers there are ok?? It just hit Osaka area which exactly DT played yesterday night, and will play today. DT might stay in Osaka now, but I did not hear any hotels are crushed, so they may be safe. Trains are stopped in Kobe, Osaka and Nara area. Though some start running, I hear. DT might flight to their next live at Fukuoka.
I know some of YJammers(Okuda and Kaoru) were/are in Osaka now, hope they are safe too.
Our Osaka office is almost closed, because most of employees cannot come to the office now. The telephone lines are busy by too many phone calls right now.

>>>is it possible to post a list of all Demo-distibutors ti ytsejam, so that we can check out the nearest place to get it??????<<<
Yes! As soon as we have all the dubbing branches of the tape tree organized, I will post a comprehensive list of the e-mail addresses of all of the dub sites, broken down by state/country so that you will know the appropriate dubber to mail in your area for a copy. Don't worry, I will let everyone on YJ know when we are ready to begin! At the moment, I'm just waiting for the three new demos to get here via snail mail (today was a national holiday, so no mail, plus the weather has been slowing mail service down a bit too), so that I know for certain what all of the song titles/lengths are, then I will be sending out instructions to all of the dub sites of how to obtain their copy of the demos. Everything's coming together, just be patient for a little while longer! :) As soon as we're ready to go, you'll be the first to know!
Take care,
