I'm probably going to get eaten alive by everyone else on this list for
recommending this, but I would start with my personal favorite, "Awaken
the Guardian". I've been a big FW fan ever since this one came out, and
I still think it's the best. It doesn't have quite that "progressive"
sound that everyone looks for, but the songwriting is simply
unbelievable. I don't know how they managed to construct such complex
but listenable songs. It also contains the only heavy metal song that
has ever made me cry - "Guardian".
My .02...

Don't give up on Marillion just yet. Most of their greatest work was not
released as singles. If you have it in your heart (and wallet) to try
one more Marillion album, try Misplaced Childhood. It's a masterpiece
from beginning to end.

Which Pretty Maids tape do you have? (or could you name a few songs?) They did about 5 CDs until now: 1984 - Red, hot and heavy (very good, but a little oldfashioned metal) 1987 - Future world (Imho their best release - check the titeltrack) 1990 - Jump the gun (o.k. - but a little bit boring...) 1992 - Sin-decade (quite good - heavy stuff that sticks to your ears) sometimes between 1991 and 1993 they did some "unplugged" stuff, like everybody did that time. First only released in Japan as an EP an later for Europe a longplayer called "Stripped" - not my stuff.
The good news: There's a new Pretty Maids album to be released at the 19th of january in germany. Titel: "Scream", produced by Flemming Rasmussen!!!
I don't know if it will be available in the US, but I can write a few lines as soon as I heard it!
So long - hope that helps - sorry for the non-DT content - jerry :--)

Holy shit (pardon my French) yes! These guys are who inspired me to buy my first guitar. I still cite them as my most major influence in in my 'fomative' guitar years. For anyone who has the new album (Bust A Nut) have you noticed that at about 3:45 in the 3rd Track (Shine Away) there is a suspiciously lifted riff from the Yetse Jam? (I *think* its yetse Jam... I don't want to go wake up my roomates to find out for sure) Wonder if it was accidental, or if Tesla are fans of DT...
My faves also include (warning, cringe factor for non butt-rock lovers!): Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Great White, Bad English, Whitesnake, Gorky Park, Skid Row, Dio, Ozzy and Damn Yankees (what can I say, Im a product of the early to mid 80's metal scene!). As far as non butt-rock: Tracy Chapman is a huge influence, U2, 10,000 Maniacs, James Taylor, Underworld, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yaz(oo), Tom Petty, R.E.M., Fates Warning, Queensryche, Spin Doctors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rush, Santana, Simon and Garfunkel, Pet Shop Boys, the police, Enigma, Heart, GnR, Enno Morricone (has done some incredible soundtracks: The Mission- for example) Led Zepplin, Indigo Girls, Amy Grant, Enya, The Clash, Clapton, Phil Collins, Alice in Chains, Peter gabriel, Bananarama, Bonnie Raitt, Duran Duran Candlebox, and Genisis (newer stuff, actually, I find better). Hows *that* for an eclectic little collection of music, eh?! :) Also, I *love* to discuss music, and will gladly wax poetic (and have conversations) with anyone who will write to me about any of these bands (or others). I love music, its what keeps me alive!

Just because everyone is asking about PRETTY MAIDS:
as far as I recall, they earned quite some respect in the german scene.
The put out some self titled album somewhere long ago, then a disc called "red, hot and heavy" which is allready nice and has been released on nice price CD by CBS and then of course the mega-cool "Future World" record. Highly Recommended. There after followed more succes and "Lethal heroes" which was ok but not a classic-killer like Future World, especially as they then did some ballads and a record called "stripped" or something like that with acustic versions....Next was I think "Sin Decade" which again featured many quite interesting tracks. And I have here an ad saying that the new pretty maids will be available from the 19.1.95 in Germany, called "scream" and the cover looks like it could be a killer again.... Produced by Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica) which I never heard before...
By the way: Loudness were quite interessting as far as i recall - and there was also a japanese hard rock band called "voy voy" or sumthing like that with a western singer (uk or usa) which appeared also to be worth giving them quite a chance.....

Oooh. I have to agree with that last comment. "Guardian" made me cry, too. And I have to say that I enjoy _Awaken the Guardian_ more than any other FW album. It was the first one I heard from them.
Other songs that have made me cry:
Helloween - "Keeper of the Seven Keys" Queensryche - "Silent Lucidity" (first time I heard it) Blue Oyster Cult - "Blue Oyster Cult" and of course Dream Theater - "Wait for Sleep / Learning to Live"

In March/April 1993 I visited Denver for a conference and whenever I was in my hotel room I listened to the radio. I found a station there that continuously played metal and DT was played quite often (several songs from I&W). I forget the name of the station but I'm sure the people in the area of Denver know what I'm talking about. Is the station still there and has it played anything from Awake?

Ummm...maybe this won't add much but what the heck, here's my list of favourite music except for Dream Theater: (somewhat sorted)
Queensryche - Rush - King Crimson - Dnglagerd - Pink Floyd - Deep Purple - Led Zeppelin - Black Sabbath - Kiss - Judas Priest - Rainbow - Whitesnake - Mountain - Robert Plant - Metallica - Megadeth - Slayer - Death - Cynic - Cathedral - The Beatles - Janis Joplin - Sly & Family Stone - Stevie Wonder - Soundgarden - Pearl Jam - Mind Funk - Eleven - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Faith No More - Ozzy Osbourne - Jimi Hendrix - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Robert Johnson - Cream - Tori Amos - David Baerwald - Simon & Garfunkel - Chris Isaak - A.Badalamenti - E.Morricone - Bill Frisell - Jaco Pastorius - Charlie Mingus - Brecker Brothers - Parker/Gillespie - Ornette Coleman - Pat Metheny - Miles Davies - Wagner - Tjaijkovskij - Grieg - Sibelius - Stravinsky - Beethoven - Paganini - Bach.....let's see.....oh yeah.....Motvrhead - I Mother Earth - Frank Zappa - Voivod - Syd Barrett - Sheryl Crow - Extreme - Mother Love Bone
and some more, when you really think about what music you like it's not very easy to put together a list, but that's something for you.
There are some odd ones like the great jazz-guitarrist Bill Frisell and David Baerwald who does...well..cool music. I probably forgot shitloads of Heavy Metal stuff...Yngwie Malmsteen...there's one...but it was some time ago I listened to all that.

Sorry about the following non-DT content, but...
I am a long-time Dream Theater fan -- and a musician -- my band, _ELAN_, has
just released it's first CD, "Firestorm." From the promo copies I sent out,
the response has been incredibly favorable across the board, and a lot of
respondents have compared us to DT -- thus some suggested I post here -- it
seems we all thought that there would be some people here who would like to
know we exist. :)
On our CD, you will hear multi-octave singing, advanced guitar work, up-front
and complicated bass playing, wicked time changes, and very precise and
creative drumming holding it all together -- and the lyrics ain't bad either!
:)
Seriously though, we have been compared to "Rush, where they should have gone
after Moving Pictures," and "Queensryche","Fates Warning," and, of course,
"Dream Theater" -- all very good compliments to be sure.
If you would like more info, e-mail
or to order a full-length CD, send $10 to:

Thanks for putting up with me -- and helping to keep the progressive spirit
alive!

I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong. I had assumed that Leviathan was a European band because they are on Rock the Nation. As far as their sound, I'll stand by my original comment. They are a bit hard to define, actually. At times they sound very strongly like old Fates Warning, Metal Church, Crimson Glory, and even 'Warning' era Queensryche. There are keyboards in the band--but no _lead_ keyboards. Because of the bass playing and some of the rhythms, I classified them with DT.
Great band in any case.

If memory serves me correctly, Kirk Hammet (sp?) of Metallica is Filapino (or at least partially). This makes him Asian by some people's definition.

The fan club is currently (was recently?) in the process of redoing a bunch of stuff because most of the promo stuff that they made has Kevin on it and the band's management wants it replaced with stuff that does not have Kevin on it.
So they're around, just very behind.
