Sup guys and gals. Just wanted to thank everybody for the warm
responses on my letter (I wrote about the Fates Warning Problem that appears
I'm not the only one afflicted with).
I've got another question for all the Long-Timers (anyone read
Insomina???) here.
Does anyone know how DT will go about writing songs?? I mean, they
seem just a little too complex to just get everyone together for a lazy
afternoon of jamming and then end up with A Mind Beside Itself.
Do they all write stuff at home, then pass it around on tapes,
and then get together for arranging later on??
Anyone who's asked them personally I especially encourage to respond.
It seems like this would be a FAQ, but it wasn't on there.

DREAM THEATER SURVIVES KANSAI REGION EARTHQUAKE
As the sun came up on Tuesday morning, EastWest recording artists Dream
Theater were in Osaka's Nonkai South Tower Hotel when an earthquake measuring
7.2 on the Richter scale rocked the Kansai region of Japan.
The following is a statement from the band's drummer, Mike Portnoy:
"...Dream Theater had played our first of two shows in Osaka and spent the
night at Hard Rock Cafe after donating a platinum disc and an autographed
drum head. After heading back to the hotel to retire for the evening, the
earthquake hit at 5:46am.
It was absolutely the most frightening experience of my entire life. My room
was shaking so violently, I thought a bomb had gone off. It felt like it
lasted for a good 30 seconds and I couldn't even balance myself to get out of
bed. I was certain I was going to die.
After it stopped, the band and crew ran into the hallway in complete panic
and confusion-the scariest part of it was being stuck on the 27th floor with
the lights blown out as the hotel continued to rock back and forth for about
5 minutes.
We continued to feel aftershocks throughout the day and had to cancel our
second show.
It is a horrible tragedy for the people of Japan and our hearts go out to
them being that we went through the experience as well."

Since I'm new, I dont know if this has ever been fought over before, but here goes:
I'm curious as to what all you 'jammers think is the most*difficult* DT song out there. I'm a singer, and as far as I'm concerned the hardest songs to sing are TTT, Surrounded, LtL, LFaGA, and Status Seeker, in that order. This is because <in my voice> singing th song reqires many shifts from chest to head register and back over the course of only about 8 measures. I would be interested in hearing what other singers/instrumentalists/non-musicians think of this query. Am I using that word correctly?

There's inconsistencies among the information concerning this new bootleg. For
the last week or so, any mention has claimed that this boot was from Oct. 28 at
the Manhattan Center in NY. The year was never even mentioned, let alone any
songs being mentioned except metropolis and Another Day, so I thought this was
another Images and Tour show. Now Kaoru says its from Oct. 29, 1995. I'm glad
to hear it's an Awake show, but it couldn't have been from Oct. 28 or 29, since
these shows were in Baltimore and Pittsburgh respectively. Kaoru, does James
say "New York" on the recording? If so, someone reiterate when they played at
the Manhattan Center. Both Baltimore and Pittsburgh shows included Set the Sun
but not Innocence Faded, so the location could be messed up also. I'm just
curious to whether we can figure this out. I was at the Pittsburgh show, and
Putrucci's acoustic didn't work for Silent Man, so they stopped the song and
started it over with him playing his electric. This is distinctive of
Pittsburgh, so if this isn't on the recording, then it's not from Oct. 29.

ps. Just got my European LIE single with TLF on it. I really like the studio
version of TLF with the harmony vocals and new vocal melody near the end. I
still hate the radio edit of LIE. It just sucks without the Mirror and the
outro solo. Saw the single with the TTT demo on it at a record fair yesterday,
but didn't have $10 left when I got to it. My bootlist is growing
exponentially, so anyone interested in taking another look at it for trading
purposes, e-mail me. Thanks ALF for the single, direct from Italy.

i mean, there's some talk about how great it is with a covers-gig, but
i'm surprised that there's not more...i think it's the fucking coolest
thing of the year and i would be glad to sell my whole family to see that
gig...ok, not my whole family...ok, well maybe not my family...but still i
think i would appreciate to see that show more than a normal dt show,
don't flame me about this. (i have seen dt twice and will of course go
to every regular dt show that i'm able to) but, you enlish guys, make
sure to record the show, even though mike said that dt will record it,
you'll never know how much or even if it will be released. record the show!
on to another subject: i want to get into fates warning, i did try, but i
have failed. a friend of mine lent me his copy of parallells and i
didn't find it very interesting. i know that it takes about 10 listens
to really appreciate such music and i only listened to it about three
times, but with all music i think there'll have to be something that
grabs you from the first second. i found the album, not bad at all, but
quite boring, already feeling the flames.... when i first heard pmu i was
knocked to the floor, i recorded the video from tv and watched it several
times every day for about a week until i finally found the album i&w. still
dt requires more than just one listen but something hit me and grabbed
me hard when i first heard dt, and that did not happen with fw.
maybe i started with the wrong fw-album. i found songs like 'eye to eye'
quite cheezy but i understand that the progressive qualitys are more
subtle with fw's music. which album should i start with if i like hard,
progressive and sometimes crazy music, which fw album is their essence,
their masterpiece? i will see fw when they open for dt in feb. and maybe
then i will discover the greatness of fw, i sincerely hope so. any help
is needed. answer via email if you think that this subject has already
been dealt with here too much.

OK, unless someone else jumps up and demands that they want to do, it
looks like I'm running the Dream Theater Poll.
I have a rough draft ready, and here's what it contains so far:
- song rankings (only material from WDADU, I&W and Awake) from 0 to 10
- lyric rankings (same format)
- general question, 'What intrument do you play (if any)?'
Yeah, ok, it looks short. But it's going to give me enough work as it
is, so why complicate things? :-)
I don't think we should include any unreleased stuff (ACOS, TLF etc..)
because not everyone has access to it. (WDADU is rare enough)
Album rankings will be calculated from the song rankings
I can't really think of anything else to put on the poll. If anyone has
any suggestions, MAIL ME NOW!!! As I'm really anxious to get this thing
underway! I want to post the poll as soon as possible, but I will wait
until Monday (Jan 30th) to give everyone a fair chance to offer
suggestions.

Hi fellow jammers out there.
Being a Dream Theater fan for a couple of years (yep, I also got
WDADU, if you still remember that thread;) and several other prog
bands, my attention has been brought to the music of Rush. I know that
most of you like Rush, so I find this the best place to ask for
recommendations. I currently have Fly by Night on vinyl and Permanent
waves on CD. Of the two I like PW best. It's hard to find old Rush, so
I'll probable by any of their albums as they become available, but
could you give me some pointers to which Rush albums should be
considered essential?

I have said this repeatedly in the past, and since there are new people here all the time, I'll say it again. I DON'T GET FATES. I mean, DT, Rush, QR all blow me away - so what the hell is my problem? (This is where someone will say something quick like 'because you have shit in your ears') Paralles puts me to sleep. Remember, these guys have been around for a pretty long time - if DT is already bigger than they ever will be, maybe there is a good reason for it.

I appreciate your advice about music styles. I agree that I haven't been exposed to much jazz and therefore don't appreciate it. But what I'm looking for right now is sort of a stepping stone into the world of jazz. Up until now I've liked guitar or solo instrument compositions, and usually those that are technically difficult. When I listened to John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, etc it struck me as a lot of orchestration at times and no individuality of instruments, or free-style jazz at times with everyone playing at once. Since I'm not experienced in that style I'd like to slowly delve into it. For example, Chick Corea was fairly mainstream in my opinion. I don't mean to say jazz is bad since I appreciate the music knowledge those musicians have.
I've been hearing Al DiMeola's Kiss My Axe is good.

Howdy fellow 'Jammers. sorry for the lack o' DT content but...
..with all this talk about Fates Warning, i felt i had to post. i was first introduced to FW 3 years ago, and i hated it. but a band i was in played several covers from No Exit, Perfect Symmetry, and Parallels so i was put on a strict listening diet of FW and Queensryche -- i din't like QR at the time either; what was wrong w/ me???. i grew to appreciate FW for the seemingly simplicity of their songs as a whole but also for the complexity of each intrument's part. what i realize now is that i hadn't been *listening* to the songs, i had only heard them. most ppl don't *listen* to music. yes, they hear to melody and the singing but they do not understand exactly what is going on or the complexity/simplicity of the individual parts and then putting those pieces together.
FW is what i call musician's music. i usually put DT into this group, tho DT is easier for the normal, everyday person to hear. i'm not saying that DT is easy to play or understand; i'm just saying that DT appeals more towards non-musician types than FW.
FW is an amazing group, but not for every listener.

I totally agree with you about David Holsinger being someone that you should listen to. I guess I am biased though because I was in the Cadets Of Bergen County and played two pieces by Holsinger, "To Tame the Perilous Skies", and "In the Spring When Kings go off to War". Pretty cool, eh? I played snare in the drumline.
I definitely reccommend Holdinger to any Dream Theater fan, if you want to dwelve in to the realm of orchestral music!!

Well, I'm 32. (The upside of this is that I was listening to Rush by the time farewell to kings came out... <g>) No need for a cane, though - I'll settle for a young, nubile nurse... ;->

I can't get into his albums either, but I loved him live. (Though that was years ago - see the paragraph above. <g>) He was the first guitarist I'd ever seen using serious coputer equipment on stage - spent part of each song trying to figure which part was the guitar. (Wasn't it Pat Metheny that Rod Stewart was referring to when he said, "He sounds better tuning up than I do _playing_."?)

I got a little damage from the rain - though no _flooding_ thank goodness. (For there to be flooding at my house, the flood control channel behind the backyard (a 100 yard concrete riverbed) would have to overflow. And that would be *bad*...) Nothing major, but just enough that I've had to put off buying a couple of DT boots I was considering... :-\

Hey, do you think you could send me what you've done with Ytsejam MOD? I used to program songs on the C64 (oh so many years ago) and have had some success with MODs. Just not a lot of inclination to work with them. Perhaps I could do something with it.

I am rather new to this list so I hope this is done right. I am pretty sure that these lyrics are correct, but I would appreciate any corrections anyone has. I also included lyrics for the ending of the song as it is on the Live In Tokoyo video, which with the solo (Moon Bubbles?) is my favorite version of a DT song.

Greetings all, more news and views from the UK...
Raw magazine, in it's competition blurb regarding the Ronnie Scott's secret(?) gig, mentioned that DT would be covering songs by Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Metallica and Marillion. I think they were the only names they mentioned. Both me and my girlfriend have entered the competition to win two tickets to the show, and the deadline's tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out soon enough just how far my luck can hold:) I really, really hope I can go. I just can't begin to imagine how awesome one of the old Yes songs would be, played by Howe, Wakeman and DT...
Cheers to the guy who posted about GFTPM transcribing all the TTT solos. I'll see if I can find it anywhere. If I can't, would you mind photocopying and sending them to me? I'd really appreciate it and would cover your costs, of course.

I am also lucky enough to have the WDADU poster. It's very cool, and like Jen's it's not for sale!! I've been listening to DT since 89 when I read a review for the album in a magazine. A local store had the poster( they were not going to hang it up because no one knew who they were so I grabed it!!) Just wanted to let you know that it's out their...hunt it down so you too can have a huge hairy armpit on your wall!!!!
