Well, I am 29, but I've only been a jammer for a few months, but a DT fan
for a lot longer. It might be interesting to get an idea the age of DT
    fans.

everyone starts with parallels and is dissappointed... so was i. i got
perfect symmetry in a tape trade because i wanted to hear what kevin
did on it and i was amazed by the whole thing... then i got it and no
exit, then the first 2, then parallels, which grew on me quickly
(although i had hated it for a year or so) then inside out and i'm an
addict now. if you get parallels and wanna give them another try, dont
get rid of it because most likely it'll grow on you eventually, if you
dont get the idea in your head that that's the extent of what they do

    hello,

awhile back , one of our fellow ytsejammers posted about orchestrated DT and
proposed an idea about electric violins being used...i dont know how this would
sound but it started me thinking...the only song i know of that uses an
electric violin is "Losing It" by RUSH off of their album _Signals_. Does
anyone else know of any other prog music that uses electric violin(s)??
thanks...id be really interested to know...

A MOD stands for Music Modules. It's a format for computer music first used
on the Amiga line of computers, but then used on PCs and MACs as well. It
uses sound samples that you can get anywhere, or make your own.

I've gotta agree with you on TTT...James really squeezed 'em for most
of the tune. I love to use it as a workout when I'm tired of the
keyboard. Obviously, different singers will have different strengths
and weaknesses, so we certainly won't all agree on the hardest tune,
passage, wail, whatever, and some of us will find it easier to sing with
Dominici than LaBrie or vice versa. Personally, the new album is somewhat
of a disappointment in that respect (and others, but I don't want to get
into it). I don't think James is as comfortable with the new singing style
as he was on IAW, and the performance just isn't as intense. (I _do_ think
it came across much better live). Anyway, I'm interested to hear what
songs a drummer will pick as the toughest to perform.

First thing first, if anyone has complete lyrics of 'To Live Forever',
it would fantastic if I could get them. Send them to my address, if you would,
thank you kindly. And to BABS, I believe that before The Mirror was The
Mirror, it was just a little intro to Take the Time, I believe they called it
Puppies On Acid, or something like that. It's wierd that you mentioned that,
because I was just watching the Tokyo Video, and was wondering why they called
it that. If anyone knows why, or wants to coorect me if I'm wrong, take your
    stab.

I didn't contact you earlier about being a dub site, but I would like to
volunteer to do so if you are still looking for support. I have high quality
cassette recorders and a DAT depending on what kind of first generation master
you were going to be providing. I could start going as soon as I get the

Hi! So you were in that show with Perilous Skies, huh? Very
impressive! I'm the drum captain in the marching band at the U of D and
was very impressed by that show. Saw a video of it. You must know Eric
Heisler, hmm? I think he plays/played 1st bass? He lives in my dorm,
I've had a couple classes with him. Do you think there's a connection
between drum corps and Dream Theater? maybe.

The Manhattan Center date is October 28 1994

A way to verify if the CD is from Manhattan Center is to listen to the
end of Take The Time. Dereks's piano goes out and he uses an organ sound
     instead.

I'll give what I consider the best albums to get from the
    different Rush "Eras":

from the 70's- (I'd include FBN instead of HS, but since
you already have it... By-Tor and the SD
                    rocks!)

    1. 2112 ('76) (a must have for any metal fan)
    2. Hemispheres ('78) (for La Villa Strangiato- perhaps
                          the best instrumental ever written)

    early 80's-

*1. Moving Pictures ('81) (considered by most to be their
                              best album *ever*)*
    2. Power Windows ('85) (since you already have Permanent Waves,
the next best might be this album,
although it might not be hardcore
                                enough for you)

    post PW 80's -90's

    1. Hold Your Fire ('87) (I hold this and MP to be the
best Rush albums ever- the album
that got me intro'd me to Rush
back then *this album* marks the
end of a "Rush Era" - to paraphrase
Geddy- and if you have all the albums,
                             you'll know what he means)

    2. Counterparts ('93) (their most recent effort, and their best
since HYF, some good, heavy stuff here)

if you like jazz, you *might* like -

    1. Presto ('89) (probably their most unique and
                             interesting album although *I*
wouldn't put in it my top 5)

if you just want a sampling:

*1.2-CD set "Chronicles" ('90) (has at least 2 songs from
*every* album up to HYF and
1 song from Presto, a good
                                    sampler to start from)*

    2. Exit Stage Left ('81) (this is a live album which has a lot
of excellent stuff *plus* a killer
drum solo *and* Xanadu (*no one* was
doing stuff like Xanadu back then-
definitely a top 5 of all time song),
from A Farewell to Kings ('77) which
I didn't include in the list above.)

    3. A Show of Hands ('89) (better live album that has
mostly new stuff with some stuff
from albums I didn't include above
                                  and this is *excellent* sounding,
probably one of the best live arena-
recorded albums ever put out by
                              anyone.)

    bootlegs-

    1. Rush 'n Roulette '92 (probably the best Rush boot
2-CD out there *this is a soundboard*
from a Rush show with, IMO, the
best setlist of any Rush show
                             ever. *killer encore*)

I might've missed some dates because I haven't really listened
to Rush for about 9 months (since the last tour) because I've
been busy listening to Metallica, Dream Theater and now
Queensryche (geared or are gearing up for the respective tours)

(The two asterisked albums and the two live albums are the ones
    I most strongly suggest.)

    Anyway, have fun!

    Zach

It's me again ladies and gentledudes. I'd just like to put in my
    49.3 cents.

            1) Got a suggestion for the DT poll. Since a lot of people on
the list are college or older, how about a place for
career or major? I'm sorta curious about what every body
else does to pay for their DT habits.

            2) I've got the GFTPM transcriptions to TTT and also Eroto,
CIAW, and Lie. Just send me your address and I'll
photocopy them for you and send them.

            3) MANDATORY Rush CD's (in my opinion and in order):
                    Hemispheres
                    A Farewell to Kings
                    Permanent Waves
                    Moving Pictures
                    Signals
                    Power Windows

                    Counterparts

            4) Jennifer, how in the world could we as jammer's convince you

I was at the 10/28/94 show in NY, and according to the t-shirt, the 27th
was baltimore and 29th was Pittsburgh. hope this straightens everything out.

    >>>There's inconsistencies among the information concerning this new bootleg.
     For
the last week or so, any mention has claimed that this boot was from Oct. 28
    at
the Manhattan Center in NY. The year was never even mentioned, let alone any
songs being mentioned except metropolis and Another Day, so I thought this
    was
another Images and Tour show. Now Kaoru says its from Oct. 29, 1995. I'm
    glad
to hear it's an Awake show, but it couldn't have been from Oct. 28 or 29,
    since
these shows were in Baltimore and Pittsburgh respectively. Kaoru, does James
say "New York" on the recording? If so, someone reiterate when they played
    at
the Manhattan Center. Both Baltimore and Pittsburgh shows included Set the
    Sun
but not Innocence Faded, so the location could be messed up also. I'm just
curious to whether we can figure this out. I was at the Pittsburgh show, and
Putrucci's acoustic didn't work for Silent Man, so they stopped the song and
started it over with him playing his electric. This is distinctive of
Pittsburgh, so if this isn't on the recording, then it's not from Oct. 29.<<<

The date is October 28th, 1994 at the Manhattan Center in New York City in
    the
state of New York in the United States. Yes, it was the AWAKE tour. No,
Dream Theater was NOT in Baltimore on October 28th, 1994. Unless the show I
saw on October 28th, 1994 in the Manhattan Center was a mirage or a dream,
Dream Theater was DEFINITELY in the MANHATTAN CENTER ON OCTOBER 28TH, 1994.
That is what it says on my CD box for "Kick into a Dream." If you have an
Awake tour shirt, look at the dates. They were in New York, NY on October
    28th, 1994. I repeat, the AWAKE TOUR.

I would recommend that you search for "Moving Pictures" (1981) and
"2112" (1976); these are my personal Rush favorites. "2112" in particular
is a disc I never tire of listening to--IMHO it is a richly-detailed
concept album. DT furthers my amazement in creating new musical concepts
that affect me even more than Rush...

From the standpoint of Fates' song structure, they are a band that
illustrates the fact that sometimes less seems like more and can be more
aurally exciting than a section of flailing 16th notes. A particular
passage on one instrument may seem simply constructed on one hand, but
when listened to in the context of the whole band it takes on new depth.

Being a guitarist, I see this too. FW did not appeal to me as much
until several years ago when I actually began to realize how outright
difficult it was to achieve what they and some other bands I admire are
able to accomplish. IMHO Yngwie Malmsteen is also music for musicians.
The complexity involved in the techniques he uses often works against
him--in the way that this turns off many potential listeners. Personally,
I see no reason to frown on someone who can pick as fast and craft such
neo-classical melodies for the mere reason that I may never be able to
scratch at his pedestal. It is the same way with DT for me. For those
who are guitarists, sweep picking arpeggios isn't exactly an easy
task--and I concentrated years on my own practicing it.

    > FW is an amazing group, but not for every listener.

I thoroughly agree with you there.

    > What is a mod?

A .MOD is sort of a cross between a MIDI sequence (.MID) and a digital
sample (.WAV or .VOC). I believe they originated on the Amiga. Anyway,
it's basically a bunch of list (or sequence) or commands which say "play
this note at this time on this instrument". That's pretty much what a MIDI
file is, too, but the difference is that a .MOD also contains the samples
for all the instruments that it needs. The player program takes the sample
and transposes it to whatever note it needs and plays that. This means
that a .MOD should sound pretty much the same no matter what device you
play it on - as opposed to a MIDI file which sounds radically different
depending on what device it's played on (e.g. a Roland Sound Canvas vs. an
Adlib card in a PC. - think how different Petrucci would sound on a $10
plastic guitar...) It also means that you can put in vocal samples.

    Did that make sense?

Although I doubt that many people on this list will have heard the track,
there is a song on Amy Grant's CD "Lead Me On" called "Wait for the
Healing" that has an AMAZING progressive rock sound and a violin break a la

Buy Moving Pictures. Ad infinitum... :)

Most people will agree it's the greatest album ever made. It will
open you up to Rush like nothing else could... it hooked every Rush fan I
    know, every single one! :)

Heck, the album's triple platinum WITHOUT counting copies and
used CDs and the like, so millions of fans can't be wrong! :) (actually,
isn't Snoop Doggy Dogg's album platinum too? I guess millions of people
CAN be wrong. Terribly, horribly wrong.) But not about Moving Pictures! hehe

    > I'll probable by any of their albums as they become available, but
    > could you give me some pointers to which Rush albums should be

After Moving Pictures, pick up A Farewell to Kings, Presto,
Counterparts, and 2112. These will give you a very good sampler of
several different "phases" of Rush, and those albums seem to erupt with
an energy and rawness that is so quintessentially Rush that you will have
that much better of a time with more refined, more laid back albums
later, such as Hold Your Fire, Grace Under Pressure, et al.

The song itself A Farewell to Kings is very highly representative
of Rush, as is Xanadu, Closer to the Heart, The Pass, 2112, Something for
Nothing, Animate, Cold Fire, and Presto itself. All of these can be found
on those four "next thing to get" albums above. :)

    > Thanks in advance.

On the contrary... thank YOU for joining in with the growing
number of people who have been opened up to Rush! One day we WILL be
heard... now that Elektra owns Atlantic (parent of Rush's Anthem) maybe
they will get promoted worth something... Rush has been on the radio
nonstop locally, including a lot of newer stuff.
