Eric Jobson did some electric violin work while with Roxy Music.
Jan Michael Jarre has some :)
    Mark Woods does electric violin
The Great Kat does electric guitar as if it were violin (she was a violist)

I'm beginning to think that I'm the only Californian ytsejammer who *is* suffering from flooding--both at work *and* at home :-/

One wall of my office has drips running down it. One wall of my living room has water burbling underneath it (it crashed arastar.com once) I've moved the computer to the other side of the room, so it should be more "flood resistant" now :)

If the server goes down, it may be because of the local storms taking out the power (this happened once too). I'm hoping that everything continues running smoothly :)

I ordered 5 from Tower Records back around when Awake came out and they never showed up. I finally had to order them from another local store in order to get them. So I wouldn't bet on Tower being able to get them :-/

    Fellow acolytes:

From glancing at the people who attended the DT/FW show in Hollywood, I'd say that they appeal to everyone teen-aged to some folks over 40!

Recently I went to buy a new car and was hailed by a car saleseman who said "Dream Theater... great show! Better than two years ago," in response to my "Awake" t-shirt.

As for myself--I'm 19 and have been listening to DT ever since just before "Images & Words" was released.

    Best,

    Perry M. Grayson

This is a message for all of the dub sites!

I think I need to clarify something about the dubbing FAQ I sent out and I thought this would be the quickest way to get the message to all of you w/o e-mailing everyone all over again. ;)

When I said that you should use either TDK SA-Xs or Maxell XLIISs (or better) for dubbing purposes, I meant that that's the kind of tape you should send to _me_ to put your copy of the demos on, NOT the kind of tapes you should insist on to make your trades or future dubs for others with. You're welcome to use _whatever tapes you like_ when you make copies for other people, but I thought it was important to make sure that the first generation copy _you_ were getting from _me_ was on a really good quality tape. You can use normal bias tapes to trade with other people if you like, I don't care, but I think some YJammers might just shoot you for that though. ;)

Hope I cleared that up! If not, give me a yell. :)

Mike - This is the single most ridiculous statement I've *EVER* read on Ytsejam...Your "theory" quite simply holds no water....Using your little formula then one could assume: Since (Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, Kiss, Aerosmith [etc., insert your favorite "sell-out" here]) have "all been around a pretty long time" and "are already "bigger" than DT will ever be" then "maybe there is a good reason for it" - uhh nah....Record Sales + Popularity does not necesarily equal "GOOD"/Interesting/Challenging Music and the reverse is true as well: "GOOD"/Interesting/Challenging Music does not necesarily equal Record Sales & Popularity - Unfortunately!! If this WERE the case then a band like Watchtower or DT or Fates would be #1 right now and not Boyz II Men or whoever......

There is a guy named Eddie Jobson in prog circles who plays an electric violin (he is also a keyboard player). He played on the Jethro Tull album "A" and was part of the supergroup U.K. (him, John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia), Bill Bruford (Yes, KC) and Allan Holdsworth). He has some some stuff but I've never heard it.

Someone told me that they ordered tickets for the DT concert in Salt Lake. I have a few questions regarding this, if anyone can answer for me...

    1. When are they scheduled for Salt Lake City? 2. Are backstage passes still available and if so, how may I get two? 3. Someone I know said he got a couple of passes and that DT is scheduled to meet Queensryche there. Now, if that is true, that would not only double my interest in going to the concert, but I would be forced to kill for the passes...|] Is this true?

I'd really appreciate this info... Sincerely, Chuck Reis (Ibanez)

I think that one of the major reasons that FW doesn't have as much exposure as a DT and QR is the fact that they are on a smaller label (Metal Blades), and they haven't gotten as much support from their label than the other bands. In fact, before this past album, there were many rumors that the band was going to split because of the lack of exposure they were getting, whether because of their music (which is doubtful) or because of their label.

I have to reccomend Hemispheres. Moving Pictures is indeed a great album but for me it is second to Hemispheres. THIS is the album that hooked me to RUSH. It's got everything: the classic Rush sound, La Villa (the greatest Rush nnstrumental), The Trees (Another all-time classic Rush-song), Circumstances (a great example of a straight-out Rush rock-song) and Hemispheres - the greatest concept piece ever written, lots of great keyboards, great solos, incredible lyrics, high concepts, tight time-changes, and as far as I'm concerned, Geddy's voice in it's greatest form. So, there's by 2 bucks. SLAY

As far as the most difficult drum parts of Mike Portnoy to play, it's tough to say. What I have noticed is that on WDADU he is all over the place. The drums are out of control, and probably the most difficult of the three studio albums. As he matures and seems to play more *within himself*, as on IAW, he compliments the other musicians better and blends in. Awake is just an extension off IAW in terms of this blending in with the band. Besides the difficulty of WDADU, I'd throw in Metropolis as the most difficult for me to figure out since then. It continues to baffle me and I still have a hard time keeping up with it with mere "air drumming." I must say that most of his drum parts are extremely difficult, especially when you consider the length of most DT songs and how he always is switching up his beats, etc. He doesn't seem to *repeat* himself like many drummers today. __________________________________________________________ | Andrew Joseph Feyder | "You know, life moves pretty | | Gustavus Adolphus College | fast. Does anyone have the new Silent Man CD and 12 inch singles yet? I saw them for sale in the latest Goldmine. What songs are on them besides the title cut? Hopefully the band gave us more unreleased goodies. Want electric violin? Buy any Kansas album except Drastic Measures, Power, and In The Spirit of Things....those don't have any. Kansas will have a KILLER new album out in March or April. I've heard their new stuff and it takes Prog rock to the inth degree....with lots of violin. We'll NEVER see another DT video on MTV now that the Ball has been axed and Riki's out of a job. I hated that show anyway, but it was the only way to see FW and DT videos.

Oops, I butched. Baltimore was on the 27th, huh? I forgot about the Manhattan Center. Anyway, does anyone who has this bootleg want to trade?

I know I'm not the oldest, I am 27, and I think DT is the best group to come around since Rush. I feel that being a Director of Finance for a school district makes me a unique DT fan. You know it's a very conservative job and all. Is there anybody else out there with this type of job?

I can't get anybody I know to like DT. They just won't give it a chance because of the 'heavy metal' type of sound. I am a person who likes to share my music with everyone around me and I listen to quite a variety of music. I've been a member of ytsejam for about a year now, and this is my only method of sharing this music. All I have to do is read everybody elses posts.

My other favorite bands are: (In no particular order)

Rush Enya Elton John Genesis Guns & Roses (okay so shoot me, I like their music) Eric Johnson Satriani Kansas Robert Palmer (a very talented artist once you get past addicted to love) Pink Floyd Paul Simon Yanni

Anthony <AKOZAR@UOFT02.UTOLEDO.EDU> asked about electric violins.

Try Jean-Luc Ponty - he's a jazz violinist who has played with Frank Zappa among others. Albums to try:

No Relative Time - I think it's his latest - many odd rhythms from Africa (played on violin)

Cosmic Messenger - I don't know if it's his best but it's seems to have been pretty popular...

Civilized Evil - Just a personal favorite of mine...

Also several Shadowfax albums have electic violin. Try the albums on the Windham Hill label first - they lost thier founding guitarist after that and I think they turned too new-age-y (and newage rhymes with sewage...). If you like prog rock and DT, I think the best choice for a first try would be Watercourse Way - this would definitely be a "desert island" album for me.

Sorry for the non-DT content, but...

I was just wondering if there are any Extreme fans on this list. I know their new album is coming out any day now, and I was wondering if anyone has heard any of it. I am a huge fan of theirs, mostly because of guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who is my second-favourite guitarist (right behind JP). Any information/reviews on their new album would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Well, Eric, I might be wrong, but I THINK that it is called Moon Bubbles. Gee, these titles REALLY fit the songs. Well, with the volume swells with the peddle, I guess it kinda WOULD fit- Alex

Hi Jammers, So far the two oldest Ytsejam subscribers are Michael Lee Starr and Paul Alvarez - both are 42. If anybody can beat that, ante up.

I've gotten some interesting email from folks since I posted my original "age" question the other day. The limiting factor here is net access, not age. There are plenty of DT fans that are over 40. Those of you who have been to concerts can attest to this. Also, the reason so many 'Jammers are college students is really because so many college students have net access. Anyway, it looks like DT has a long prosperous future ahead.

As far as Rush goes, get Chronicles. Most of their good stuff is on it. Counterparts is also excellent. IMHO, it's their best since Exit Stage Left.

Also try Skyclad, as they have a violinist as part of the band.
