Hate to beat a dead horse, but when I read this I almost burst out
laughing. And anyone who's heard No Exit knows why.

I'd also say that for Parallels, I'd recommend turning the volume way
up, to get more of the live feel of the album. It's a brilliantly
produced CD but it never blew me away until I heard it live. Powerful
as anything I'd ever heard. The CD just doesn't do it justice. Not sure
why. But playing it loud might help make up for that.

BTW, did anyone else see Fates on the first leg of the tour, before
they were opening for Dream Theater, when they closed with Guardian?
    Wasn't that awesome?

I think I'm going to stop talking about Fates now. Been rambling a bit.
    my apologies.

Another good band with a violin is the Dixie Dregs. I would highly recommend
the live CD, "Bring 'Em Back Alive."

As for Kansas...new studio album? What's the deal? When are "Audiovisions,"
"Vinyl Confessions," and "Drastic Measures" going to be issued on CD?

When is Dream Theater due back in the States? They did not play Philadelphia
on the Awake tour and I was disappointed to not see them. I caught the
Images and Words tour twice and am very anxious to hear the new stuff live
and well as the new keyboard player (sorry, forgot his name).

Are all the CD singles from "Awake" imports? I have not seen any yet so I
assume they are. I'll have to go down to the shitty independent record store
    nearby and check.

    Esteemed Ytsejam members:

One of you folks was wondering about what John Arch was singing in this
song from "Awaken the Guardian"--so, here are the lyrics:

    "Valley of the Dolls"

(Written by Jim Matheos & John Arch)

Bedroom mirrors do tell who's the fairest of them all
    Limelight silhouette transparent attic walls
    Dancing shadows cascade paper dolls
Wailing ghost guitars send in the clowns

Painted plastic faces stealing mommy's makeup
Masque the false gods with mannikin smiles
Prima donnas play upon their pedestal of fame
Unborn girls false facade illegitimate child
    I won't play your game

Blasphemous black bible bias you betray bigotry
Slay the hydra pretty fair maidens spread leprosy
Hungry children feed from hype of perpetural egos
    I slay the hydra, burn the talisman;
    holocaust

Run with the pack illegitimate child, the unborn wench at war.
    Tears him inside
She became a bride in wedlock to a whore.
Shatter the dream the tangerine dream
Bow to kings not queens. Back where you reign
Rule your domain--Valley of the Dolls!

Bow to kings of yesterday they have given
you wings to fly away, what have the
    phantom queens but deceived you
Army of shadows climbing silvery mountains
Lining molten and [the album notes that this line says "ask kiss my",
though I think this should read "ask to kiss my ass", which is doubled by
    studio effects on the album]
Camouflage the battle scars with oxy ten and maybelline
Cloning the heros in hype magazine
Pirates of the underground lightening twice the speed of sound.
    You will prevail.

(1st guitar solo Frank Aresti, 2nd guitar solo Jim Matheos)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope that helped to give you an idea of what John Arch is singing on
    "Awaken the Guardian".

    Morgana awaits you!

You don't need a back stage pass to meet a band. Just hang around after the
concert and you'll be able to meet the band. If you show up early, you can
sometimes catch the band before the concert, too.

I've met (and chatted with) Dream Theater, Marillion, and the Pixies (Kim
    Deal!) this way.

Alternatively, you can go back to the discussion when the album first came out where this was transcribed =) Personally, I feel a little more of the context is required...

    > samples from SDV really from "Room With a View?" I've seen some people > on the DT alt file who vehemently argue that they are from "Boxing > Helena," which has the same actor and supposedly a very similiar line.

The lines are pretty darn close to the book. I guess I can compare against the movie to verify 100% that they're from A Room With a View, but I think that Airdance mentioned that Kevin said that they were from there, so that seems to be pretty good evidence in favor of ARWaV.

Tchokola is from 1991. Its Ok but a bit too rythmic for me. I freely admit that i dont care much for the world music craze that sometimes lands people in Africa. Its not that theyre not amazing musicians, but..it gets kinda old to me after awhile...

Should probably point out that they lost their keyboardist (David Lewis) too. Got me there. I only got Too Far to Whisper after their concert here in 86. That was the first time id heard them...

Shadowdance, yes..thats the one that I DONT have and that i MUST get sometime. Not sure of the remakes, though I DO have Watercourse Way. I guess it just evokes a differnt mood in me than the subsequent albums...

Yes, theres the hard edge there, WITH violin, and yet the ability to have the softer songs (China Blue, Ritual) that cover the softer side of our interests. BTW, wasnt the self-titled the first for WH?

    > Beyond (Beneath, Between, Behind? <g>) the Wailing Wall is a song that > sticks out in my memory... Have you checked out their "Retrospective" > album on Windham Hill? (If so, is there anything interesting on it, or is > it all stuff from other releases?)

I saw it and heard it, but I believe it was all stuff from other releases But ABOVE the Wailing Wall is one of their BEST (along with Brown Rice/ The Orangutan Gang (Strikes Back)/Brown Rice/New Electric India/Too Far to Whisper...shall I go on?.....:)

    > BTW, it's cool finding someone else on the list who's into Ponty and > Shadowfax. Now I just need to find a Michael Hedges fan (other than TomT

Sure, glad to share THESE interests with EVERYONE out there, as I tend to think that JP especially has listened to these guys. You cant incorporate Within You Without you in a (To Live) Forever and NOT have heard them, eh?

Anyone have ANY idea of when the US tour list will be set?

    Thanks, Andrew

Hi all, I haven't posted for a while because the first time that I did, I included the whole ytsejam mialer (and got a bunch of well deserved flames). Doubley embarrasing since I'm a software engineer. Anyway, I guess it just goes to show that people should't drink and net. This time I mailed it to myself first to make sure that there were no mishaps.

    Jason Writes:

    > > Secondly, Fates Warning is a fine, fine band, and if you don't like them, > you just haven't heard the right albums! I agree. I picked up No Exit about 6 months ago and did not like it very much. In fact, the only reason that I bought it was that I heard it compared favorably with DT. Now, after listening to it more (In fact, I'm listening to it as I wirte this) It has become one of my favorite CDs. By the way, if you are having trouble getting into FW, I recommend listenting to them through head phones an just LISTENING. The way to get into FW is *NOT* by treating them as backgroung music. Pick some time when you are not doing anything. Lie down on your bed and put the phones on and enjoy.

    > p.s. As for the violin playing, I agree whole-heartedly with another > ytsejammer who suggested Kansas. EVERYONE one this list should be > listening to early Kansas as a MAJOR influence, not only on us, as > listeners, but on our favorite group as well, Dream Theater.

Ditto! I remember when I first bought Point of Know Retrun. Yes, It was a new album then (I'm funckin old). Every song on the Album (We called CD's Albums back then) was Awesome. I remeber listening to that album and feeling HUNGRY for more stuff like it. I looked at UK, Yes, ELP, Rush and others but never found an Album that was as complete (till this day) as that one. BTW, If the album is called Point of *No* Return, no flames please. I left my records and most of my CD's in the States and it's been so long that I've forgotten the name.

Finally, I remember hearing a band called "The Strawbs" a long time ago. I think Rick Wakeman (sp) played with them. They had an incredible song called "Where is This Dream of Your Youth" (something like that). Anyone ever hear of it.

Remember that? Around Oct. 4 we were getting like 3-4 digests a day with at least 1000 lines each! Huh.

Add me to the list! I'm an electrical engineering BS, systems & controls engineering MS, who presently designs control algorithms for co-gen industrial gas turbines (i.e., jet engines that generate electricity instead of thrust). And, yes, Kansas's "Leftoverture," Yes's "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge," and Rush's "2112" and "Farewell to Kings" saved me from near certain Disco Damnation.

    > 3) I think the B- tuning on the CIAW script is cool, man!! Try > making up new riffs with it. (Mind you, if you've got > a floating tremelo, jam something under it, or you'll > spend hours trying to tune your axe)

The B tuning may be cool for guitars, since 99.99% of them have 6 strings or pairs of strings. However, for us bass players, that tuning is a hand stretching torture exercise! I heard that almost half of the new basses sold are 5 and 6 string basses (I have one of each), so publishing CIAW in "BEADG" tuning would not alienate too many people. In fact, I don't think there are any notes high enough so that they couldn't publish it in "BEAD" tuning, as they do for Metallica songs. I'm not meaning to whine--I did backflips when I saw CIAW listed on the cover-- but I don't think even John Myung could play the ultra-cool middle selection the way that they scripted it.

    > 7) I give!! I'm going to buy Perfect Symmetry this weekend. > I figure if all the FW guys are going to spend that much > effort helping out their fellow jammers, they MUST know > something I don't.

As one of the old fogeys (I'm 31) on the list, I'm still an early FW fan. Having seen the "Spectre Within" and "Awaken The Guardian" tours with John Arch, the intensity, energy, and musical expertise of those shows could not be equalled until, well, I was introduced to DT on I&W. I love the singing ability and passion of Ray Alder (I seen all those shows, too), but the excitement is gone. It would be like DT releasing Metropolis, CIAW, 6:00, Lie, PMU, etc., exclusively, and then only releasing songs like Another Day, Silent Man, etc. All of it good, but IMHO it doesn't get the blood pumping.

P.S. I've acquired the phone numbers of a couple members of Lethal. (No, I won't post them!) If they'll ever answer the phone, I may have an update.

Disclaimer: No one else is my company has a clue to who Dream Theater is (they think it's a virtual reality game), therefore my opinions could never be considered theirs.

Well, in Extreme's defense, I'd have to argue that when I saw them on that same tour, they were opening for Bon Jovi. They didn't have enough time to play all their songs; they probably combined them into medleys to please a broader audience. I don't recall them having time for seven solos either. When compared with my other Extreme live recordings, I think the show I saw was pretty consistent. Sounds like your town got a special treat!

I was wondering what you guys thought was the worst Dream Theater song. I know all their songs are good, but which ones do you think are the least good?

    On another note...

Everytime I hear "Innocence Faded" around 3:10 (you know, when James starts out, "Beginnings get complicated...") it reminds me of Jefferson Starship. James just reminds me of the lead singer of Jefferson Starship in that short section of the song. What do you guys think of this?

My netsister asked me to try recording portions of "Little Earthquakes so she could practice singing. Personally, I think the transcriptions made available for the music SUCKED (but then it almost always does for piano :( ).

Thus far I've only done Precious Things. I'd prefer to hear the album before I went forward with the rest ;)

I recently got the soundtrack to "Higher Learning", and it has two Tori Amos songs, "Butterfly" and an excellent interpretation of REM's "Losing My Religion". Even though I only got the soundtrack for the Rage Against The Machine track, I was really impressed by Tori Amos' works on there. I was thinking of getting one of her albums after listening to her first, and I was lucky enough to find these two tracks on this soundtrack. Needless to say, I think I will be getting one of her albums in the very near future (maybe even an hour from now! :) Any suggestions?

    Hi guys!

If looking for pure DT-content skip this next segment!

Just got Control And Resistance by Watchtower (1989) after reading it's praise here and on related newsgroups, and I'm not regretting buying it or anything but as I sit here listening (yes, it's one of those great Macs with a CD-player) I stand (or sit) confused.

    ------------------------------

Yuck!!! Your opinion probably differs from mine but I found the vocals horrible. I can stand most guys, even Charlie Donniwuzzie and the growlers of bands like Death and Cynic. I must say that I would much have preferred the album to be all instrumental, so you could better hear the great playing, most jazz don't need vocals so why should this? I mean, if we can stand constant time-changes and other features of prog-rock, we won't really need vocals just to make the music more listenable (at least some bands think along these lines).

Someone who's singing in the same way is probably Chris Collins (although he reminds me more of Geoff Tate) but he's still somewhat similar but does it way better. The Watchtower vocals sounds like they dragged the guitarrist or even drummer out to sing just for the sake of it, and if that were to be the case then there's at least some excuse. If you're going to have vocals you could at least try to do some SONGS, not just yell over an instrumental background. I'm saying that the songs would do great as just instrumentals with some melody lines here and there but when you're having vocals no matter what kind of music style we're talking (rock, jazz, classical) there ought to be good songs. I'll get the other album (from 1984) and then see what I think, and I do hope that when they go about recording their next album they bring some real singer in instead of this guy.

Although I must forgive them, this album was recorded in 1989 and as we all know the 80's spawned a lot of horrible things such as hairspray-pop-metal (did anyone catch european HBB two weeks ago?) and yelling in and out of key, just to be cool. (No clue why that's supposed to be cool!)

So when it comes to ranking, on a scale between 0 and 10 with 10 as the best and 0 as total crap, I'll give the album 6 as a whole. It would probably has gotten about 9 if the vocals were better or non-existing.

    Overall.......................6 (9) if not used to prog.music....4 (8) Musicianship..................9 Production....................5

Ok, I'll recommend this album to you guys who can stand not-very-good singing but on the other hand appreciates superb musicianship and over-the-top complexity. I'm getting No Exit by FW next week after recommendations from some of you, thanks a lot for that, and I hope that I'll get into that. I will hopefully get really into Watchtower as well if I can only find a way to sope with the vocals.

    DT-CONTENT...DT-CONTENT...DT-CONTENT...DT-CONTENT...DT-CONTENT...DT-CONTENT

I have only seen the Lie-single here in europe, is Caught In A Web out yet here or in the US? And further, what's up with the single and video for Silent Man? Anyone?

Sorry for the lack of DT-content in this mail but I think that it's important for all you who are about to get into all progressive music you can lay your hands on to know that Watchtower is VERY demanding to listen to. Not at all impossible but demanding, esp the vocals. Listen before you buy it!

    Take care!

Howz it goin'? 1st posting ever, btw. I would think that people who have been on the net so long (you can sorta tell...) would tire already of these stupid smiley faces. Although i must admit the abbreviations come in handy... Almost everything i've read about Rush here is 100% on the mark; 2112 rules; Hemispheres (sequal to 2112) rules (if you're learrning to play guitar, get a back copy of GW and learn La Villa...); but i can't figure why no one has mentioned the best Rush song ever, Analog Kid. Perfect. As for Presto, I nearly threw it away until i heard The Pass, which will, mark me, experience a rennaissance (how the hell do u spell that) when Rush releases it's live album end of this year. (An Evening with Rush comin' on tour...) Oh yeah, DT content... Mr Petrucci is awesome. I've never been a fan of Satch, vai, et al.- it's all jerking off with no sense of MUSIC; (Steve Morse is something else again-SEE HIM LIVE!!! $10 i spent on his show @small.club was the best money i ever spent) Back to Petrucci- my faverite moments: -solo on Glass Moon (partial transcrip. in GW lesson) -doubling of keys part in TTT -volume swells & blues playing @ beginning of Scarred. Anyone notice that GFTPM's transcription of Lie is only to 5:00 mark!? never buying that piece of @#$% mag. again... Mechanical engineering student here, by the way (too many abbs. nt. gd. 4u) stay tuned for future meanderings...
