I am a fan of Dream Theater, and this is the first time I have posted
to Ytsejam. I remember that DT used to be known as Majesty and was
looking for any place where I could listen to Majesty demo(s) or perhaps
purchase them...

You're right about Awake the Guardian.... first time I heard it, I was
like, this doesn't sound like DT at all... this sucks! but after about 10
listnes I really got into... I really love that album now.

Well I know most of you won't agree but Presto is my fave Rush album. It is
awesome lyrically and musically. Listen to the lyrics to Presto, Scars, The
Pass, Hand Over Fist, and Anagram (making a song with anagrams in every line
Pure genius!!!!!!!!!). And a straight ahead rock song Superconductor. Also
Alex Lifeson said that Show Don't Tell is one of his most favorite songs to
play live because it is so dynamic. And The Pass is also self proclaimed the
bands favorite song. Great build ups and dynamics (loud and soft) in
Avalible Light: it goes from totally sad and depressing in the verse to
happy (almost as happy as Surrounded) in the pre-chorus and chorus. What
more could you want in an album. But everyone dumps on it saying it is their
worst. Does anyone out there agree with me??????????

I, for one, agree!! Presto is my favorite album of theirs too. It's
got the best keyboard sound out of any of their albums, IMHO. (Some
people might prefer the 1982 synthesizer sound of Moving Pictures or
Signals, but I like the newere sounds better. :-) ) One of the large
drawing points about DT is the fact that they have (had?) a keyboard
player, a very good one at that, and he is allowed to be heard
throughout the music.
Strangely enough, Presto also contains my least favorite Rush song,
Hand Over Fist. That one always manages to get me to hit the song
forwards button on my CD player. I listen to Countdown, but Hand Over
Fist seems to strike a nerve with me.
obDTContent: I wonder what Kevin thinks about Presto....?

Well, I certainly don't like FW as much as DT or Queensryche and Rush, but it is music "worthy". I can't really say that it puts me to sleep, but it is quite mellow; there aren't any monster guitar soloes like JP's, but I believe it is musically and lyrically strong. I'm not surprised there are some ppl (ytsejammers) that don't like FW (well Parallels, anyways, cuz that's all I have). I suppose it's better listening when you want to be really quiet or want to sit back... I disagree.... Rush made the Gangerst of Boats triology as a joke. An inside joke of the band. Being part four of a triology doesn't make any sense. However on the other hand Dream Theater's Metroplis Part 1 is very serious and I doubt the Part 1 to be a joke. And if it is, well, they have a horrible sense of humor. :)

Jarrod, check out the band picture wall at The Boardwalk in Orangevale Dream Theater has an autographed picture on the wall. So does Fates Warning, for that matter.
Remember, when IAW *first* came out, DT did a *club* tour. I know, because I won free tickets to go to a club date here in the Bay Area. This was just before I went out and got the album. Like a loser, I didn't bother to go! I guess album sales improved and the label decided to support a tour of bigger venues. > The next time the band plans a tour in Northern CA, I think we should unite > all of the local fans - and it wouldn't hurt if some of you Bay Area people > helped out. : ) (Yes, Bret, I know that I can already count you in!) I go to concerts in Sac. all the time (I used to live there over a decade ago). You guys *still* have the best radio station (93 Rock). If you have any complaints about it, just some down to San Jose and tune in to KSJO (92.3) I listen at night and you can bet, except for extreme overplay of Aerosmith and Van Halen, that this station is turning "Alternative". There are tons of songs that I haven't heard in over a year down here that when I travel into the valley I hear them right away (on Rock 104 -Stockton/Modesto- too. Be thankful, because down here, it's a Pearl Jam/STP/Offspring/Green Day/Nirvana/Whatever poser bands that have come out with 1 "hit" song in the last year or so and are nominated for 63 Grammys, marathon 24 hours a day. > ------------------------------- > > Jen >

Isn't Barf bag just the name Petrucci gave to one of his Guitar World lessons? And he did this because he was on an airplane and he wrote it down on a barf bag.

I probably should have stated this in my previous messages about the Dream Theater Song Poll.... I am accepting suggestions about the format of the poll now, until Sunday (Jan 29).
After this date, I will be posting an official POLL FORM to be filled out (or you could just send me a list of numbers, and answers to the questions, without the actual completed POLL FORM).
I have recieved a number of rankings from people already, and I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that it was my intention to start recieving rankings on MONDAY, JAN30th.
Please, everyone, wait until Monday to make your entries. This way, in Monday's YTSEJAM you will see the official POLL FORM, and you will know exactly which questions will be included.
To those who have sent me rankings, I have recorded them. (no worries)
I just want to make sure everything works out fine :-)

Are Rush fans supposed to own this? Didn't the band advise us not to buy it, since it was a shameless attempt by Mercury to make money off them after they'd already left the label?

Hmmm... It's been a while, since I've listened to those two - in fact I may only have them on vinyl... I'd better check them out again. Jeff Stewart mentioned an album called Tchokola, have you heard it?
BTW, Jeff, is Tchokola new?

I guess I'm prejudiced because I started listening to them before they _had_ a violinist. <g> (I guess I should have mentioned that, as far as I can recall, Watercourse Way has no violin at all.)
> > If you like prog rock and DT, I think the best choice for a first try > > would be Watercourse Way - this would definitely be a "desert island" > > album for me. > > Watercourse Way is very ... atonal and more blues progressive to me. > I'd suggest trying "Shadowfax" or the album with "Brown Rice" (can't > remember the title now....)
Brown Rice is on Shadowdance - that's the one that begins with New Electric India, right? Shadowdance also has new versions of two songs from Watercourse Way (Watercourse Way(?), Song for My Brother) that they put on the disc because they thought they'd never get the rights to reissue WWay after Passport Records went under.
The reason I suggested Watercourse Way is that it is the one with the hardest "edge" - especially the first two songs (The Shape of a Word, Linear Dance) - so good for DT fans. The two you suggested (the first two recorded on Windham Hill) are really good, too, but a different sound. (Which is exactly why you suggested them. <g>)
> PS (might try The Dreams of Children or Too Far to Whisper)
Beyond (Beneath, Between, Behind? <g>) the Wailing Wall is a song that sticks out in my memory... Have you checked out their "Retrospective" album on Windham Hill? (If so, is there anything interesting on it, or is it all stuff from other releases?)
BTW, it's cool finding someone else on the list who's into Ponty and Shadowfax. Now I just need to find a Michael Hedges fan (other than TomT <g>)... Good lord, I *need* to find some Michael Hedges boots!

Fellow ystejammers: Since Fates Warning was the band that was responsible for getting me interested in Dream Theater (similar to the way it was for Dr. Mosh), here are few of my responses to Doc. Mosh's listener's guide to Fates Warning: > In my opinion, Parallels is one of the greatest CD's made by any band. I agree. "Point of View" has a majestic sound to it IMHO--chords and notes that sustain and stir one with both grandeur and melancholy. > Fates Warning is generally thought of to be a darker more brooding > band, sometimes bordering on depressive. From my listenings, I can particularly say that sometimes I get the most out of FW when I am alone, driving in the car or reading. Personally, I find that they are somewhat personal, though I *enjoy* them to new heights live, and can easily be drawn in while listening with fellow Fates Warning buffs. The music is both introverted and accessible to me while with others. Jim Matheos was quoted as saying that some of the lyrics come from personal experiences, and I think that has a certain allure to the listener--the same way that pieces like "Space-Dye Vest" and "Light Fuse and Get Away" do in DT's repetoire. There is a great amount of emotionalism there, a romanticism similar to the way Mary Shelley addressed things in the novel _Frankenstein_ (since I am inclined to literature, as well). Both bands have a way of also addressing the fantastic, in addition to those sharp pangs of reality. Best, Perry M. Grayson hbjou001@huey.csun.edu perryg@pro-palmtree.cts.com

Don't you just love the wicked guitar effects in the beginning of Voices? I just love how the sounds go from one ear to the other! I also love Silent Man, because it the only song on the album that I have absolutely no trouble singing. I can also sing most of Lifting Shadows without switching to my head voice. Of course, I have to switch to my head voice when he sings "and she listens - <<OPENLY>>" But really, I have a more of a Brad Kane voice (I love those Aladdin tunes!)
<<<I was wondering if I could get a few trancriptions to some DT songs. The only three I have are Caught In A Web, Erotomania, and Take the Time. (From Guitar mags.) I was hoping someone might be able to get me Pull Me Under, Another Day, A fortune in Lies, and/or Learning to Live. Also, Are there any complete tablature books for any of their albums? I've been looking and can't seem to find anything...>>>
I just finished writing up the tablature to Fortune in Lies. It should be up on netcom soon. You can FTP to get it at ftp.netcom.com/pub/dr/drkhoe/dt/tab
Yours, Jeff =)

It's Mark Wood...Voodo Violince...Put out by GFTPM's Label...and it's kinda old (I got that one way back in 91 or 92)...definetly a Guitarist's/Musicians album!!! Quite progressive too!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to the circle of fifths, and the pattern of sharps and flats: If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sig's) (i.e A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major would have 4 sharps. emoeglin@bigcat.missouri.edu

Hey everyone, As those of you who read the last digest know, the samples in 6:00 come from the movie based on Joyce's story "The Dead." The lines themselves come straight from the book (on the same page no less), and since I just happen to have it here with me, I figure I'll transcript the section for anyone interested. Hope I'm not breaking any copyright laws, but here goes:
--No, continued Aunt Kate, she wouldn't be said or led by anyone, slaving there in that choir night and day, night and day. Six o'clock on Christmas morning! And all for what? --Well, isn't it for the honour of God, Aunt Kate? asked Mary Jane, twisting round on the piano-stool and smiling. Aunt Kate turned fiercely on her niece and said: --I know all about the honour of God, Mary Jane, but I think it's not at all honourable for the pope to turn out the women out of the choirs that have slaved there all their lives and put little whipper-snappers of boys over their heads. I suppose it is for the good of the Church if the pope does it. But it's not just, Mary Jane, and it's not right.
Well, there you go, I hope that does someone some good. BTW (I love these little Internet abbreviations that save so much time), are the samples from SDV really from "Room With a View?" I've seen some people on the DT alt file who vehemently argue that they are from "Boxing Helena," which has the same actor and supposedly a very similiar line. I would appreciate it if anyone can clear this up.

Hi all,
I don't know if this is of interest to anyone, but down here (Australia) there are a few companies that sell really cheap bootleg recordings. The have UNAUTHORISED plastered all over them (Apparently that's how they get around copyright laws)
They have all different bands such as Sting Kiss Bon Jovi Tori Amos etc etc etc
including RUSH.
I have one of these Rush Boots, and the quality is pretty good. I don't have it with me, but if anyone wants the details I can e-mail you (or post it to the digest if there is overwhelming interest.)
The point is, that these CD's sell for about A$3.00 to A$6.00 (no that's not a misprint (Australian dollars))
I have no idea if these are just copies of 'legit' bootlegs or what, but I can give dates and a full track listing, plus the name of the company that does them if you are interested.
If you can already get these CD's then I apologise for wasting your time.

P.S. No they don't have a DT or Queensryche CD (that I am aware of.) .....hey, thats sort of DT content ain't it?

Damn!! I out three days with homework and so much good stuff gets talked about. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! AAAHHHH!!!!
1) How many people out there are engineers?? I'm willing to bet that a lot of nerdy people like me (well, not too nerdy) find that their analytical minds prefer to snack on DT and other prog music. I only ask because of the structural engineer who wrote.(I'm a chemical)
2) To the Extreme fans. I used to love Extreme. III sides was my absolute favorite CD. But then I went to their concert... I think that Nuno's good, but NOT repeat NOT good enough to take SEVEN guitar SOLOS (i.e. no one else on the stage). That, coupled with the irritating practice of playing the first half of a song, then swtiching to a new song (I think they made it completly through only 3 songs the whole night). I don't like them any more. Also if anyone else saw them, BACK ME UP ON THIS!!
3) I think the B- tuning on the CIAW script is cool, man!! Try making up new riffs with it. (Mind you, if you've got a floating tremelo, jam something under it, or you'll spend hours trying to tune your axe)
4) I can sort of play drums (CANNOT play double bass though, my legs always cramp up), and I'll have to say that IMHO TTT is the hardest to play. Especially, the section that starts "Unbroken spirit, obscured and..." and the 9/8 section following the first piano interlude. The ride --hi-hat work just loses me everytime.
5) Mikey, you get a resounding AMEN!!! from the chorus!! The section that you and the other guy (sorry man!) describe from Voices gets me yodeling 'til my girlfriend wrenches my nuts in a vice. But you're both right. I don't think there's a more beautiful passage on Awake.
6) Tori is the Wo-man (hesitate on the hyphen) does anyone else huh-huh "get into her"?? (I apologize lady 'jammers!) If not, try getting Little Earthquakes. All but the first song Crucify are awesome. Also, the song (insert twilight zone theme here) "Spacedog" RULEZ on In The Pink.
7) I give!! I'm going to buy Perfect Symmetry this weekend. I figure if all the FW guys are going to spend that much effort helping out their fellow jammers, they MUST know something I don't.
Sorry so long guys!!!
Mr. Sysop? Do we get flogged if letters are too lengthy??
