Here's something that will hopefully help out anybody curious about Fates
Warning or just can't seem to listen to Fates Warning:

     **************************************
     * The Fates Warning Listening Guide *
     * by Dr. Mosh *
     * drkhoe@netcom.com *
     **************************************

So you've just bought Parallels by Fates Warning since you've heard all those
guys on the mailing list and newsgroups talk about Fates Warning. You've
never actually heard any Fates but you listen to plenty of Dream Theater
     and Rush.

You rush home to hear the CD, put it on, hit the play button, you don't hear
anything too exciting, you think, it'll get better! You listen to the whole
album and on the whole you weren't too impressed. You think to yourself,
"Those guys are all smoking something if they think this is good stuff".
So you opt to sell it or give it to a friend since it wasn't that great.

Ah, my dear friend, perhaps you haven't given it a chance!

Welcome to the Listening Guide. This guide will hopefully get you on your
way to becoming one of the few but dedicated Fates Warning fans.

Let's start off by answering a few questions.

     1. Is Fates Warning like Dream Theater?

Yes and no. They definitely have their own progressive style. Some of the
textures of their songs are the same but Fates Warning is generally thought
of to be a darker more brooding band, sometimes bordering on depressive.

     2. What album should I start with if I listen to a lot of Dream Theater with
lots of time changes and such?

You should probably start out with No Exit or Perfect Symmetry.

     3. What are their earlier albums like?

Night on Brocken is more of a Maidenish type sound while Spectre Within they
begin to break into the new mold. Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian
are more towards metal with progressive tendencies.

     4. Why the change from Awaken the Guardian to No Exit?

They replaced singer John Arch with Ray Alder and thus their style began
      to change.

     5. So how come I don't like Parallels?

In my opinion, Parallels is one of the greatest CD's made by any band.
It's not the in your face time changes that are astounding, but as one
person put it, it's a musician's music. The way the instruments blend
and contrast, the way the songs are arranged, the very minor key changes.

     6. Which album is the most progressive?

Many have argued this question but a large percentage will tell you Perfect
      Symmetry is.

     Some facts:

      * The current members are:
             Jim Matheos - Guitar
             Frank Aresti - Guitar
             Joe DiBiase - Bass
             Ray Alder - Vocals
             Mark Zonders - Drums

      * The albums:
             Night on Brocken
             Spectre Within
             Awaken the Guardian
             No Exit
             Perfect Symmetry
             Parallels
             Inside Out

      * Current record label: Metal Blade
      * Where they hail from: New Haven, CT
      * Currently on tour through 1995 with Dream Theater

In Ytsejam #659, Jarrod Kamsey-Lewis said: <<One more thing, to the best of my knowledge, DT has never played in Sacramento, CA. On the I&W Tour, the show was cancelled due to a fire :( On the "Awake" tour they passed up Sacramento all together. I have many, many friends in Sacramento who are some of the biggest DT fans that ever lived. They would like to see DT in concert. If anybody has anykind of influence on tour dates at all please take these two previous no shows into consideration when planing the next tour dates. Thank you.>>

Ah, I know you're out-of-state right now, but, from your posts, I assume you're a fellow Sacramentan?

I know very well about this dilemma... Unfortunately, I knew nothing about Dream Theater back when they were scheduled to play at the Crest. My husband did have tickets (which he ended up exchanging for SF tickets) - he's the one who introduced me to the band. Anyhow, he believes there was more involved than just the fire, that maybe it was a blessing in disguise due to low tix sales. : (

Originally, there *was* a TBA date scheduled for the "Awake" tour, though... Believe me, I kept trying to be on top of this, and the closer December came, the more I came to acknowlege that it just wasn't going to happen. I now have more connections with fellow fans, but I didn't have enough then to start any kind of campaign, so it became a lost cause (mind you, we did catch them in San Francisco, though!)

The next time the band plans a tour in Northern CA, I think we should unite all of the local fans - and it wouldn't hurt if some of you Bay Area people helped out. : ) (Yes, Bret, I know that I can already count you in!) I'm beginning to think that if we look around long enough, maybe we can actually fill the Crest this time! (I'm doing my own part by also trying to indoctrinate prospective fans. <g>)

------------------------------- While I'm posting today, I also want to add my $.02 about the comment about "Dream Theater brothers": I'm with Babs; there's a lot of female Ytsejammers, and we know our stuff! (My husband long ago gave me the nick-name "Dream Theater goddess"! ) Over on America Online, my "Dream Theater sisters" are *extremely* vocal...

Yeah, sure! They'll cancel somewehere next week, so don't count on it. I heard Elegy would be opening for DT in Holland, maybe they were asked to be FW's backup; I bet Elegy *will* be opening.

I wonder who's opening in Belgium (Holland was sold out, so Belgium is where I've got my tickets for). Anybody who knows this ? (Don't tell me it'll be FW, I won't believe till I see it. well, to bring some sort of physical evidence to mike burstin's ( >'s ) statement, i just dug out my setlist (signed by dt, including kev!) from 10/30/92 at backstage in houston, and this is what it says, verbatim:

metropolis glass moon matter of time surrounded pull me under ytse jam (dm solo) (moon bubbles) another day (another hand) killing hand take the time ------------- (piano solo) wait for sleep learning to live

this is the same set as the live in LI and home sweet home boots, as well as the video of the same night (imagine that :) ) and i think of the osaka soundboard, and alot of the shows of the 1st leg of the american tour. so, it was pretty much a "structured jam" like bombay vindaloo or the new instumental jams they added at the later '94 dates between lifting shadows and the mirror. the way i remember it at the show i was at (too bad i didn't have my DAT back then) was alot of volume swells and delay on the guitar and some ambient keys, with some bass harmonics thrown in. that structure was pretty much consistent throughout that leg of the tour.

I just wanted to throw in a little comment... I am sitting here listening to Voices in my headphones (which sometimes sound even better than listening through my Bose 301s) and I keep on noticing that when I am listening this way, that I always start singing alot with the part beginning "I'm lying here in bed, swear my skin is inside out..." and can't from air guitaring to the part starting at 7:24... then continue singing with "Maybe I'm just Casandra fleeting"...

Anyway, I just came to the conclusion that this is _one_ of my favorite parts of Awake...

I do have guitar tab to a couple other DT songs, Another Day, Lie, Ytse Jam, Surrounded, and a few parts of Metropolis. If you're interested in any or all of those transcriptions, I can mail them to you. I am interested in obtaining Pull Me Under transcriptions and any other guitar or bass transcriptions you have or know about. BTW do you know of any FTP sites containing DT tab?

    Guys,

Whoever asked about Extreme...I'm a huge fan. There was a review of the new album in a guitar mag, and they were disappointed in the songwriting, but said it was much heavier and less commercial since 3 Sides didn't fair too well commercially supposedly. I'm still looking forward to it.

To the Director of Finance: That DOES seem rare. I'm doing my master's in structural engineering, and being a good student all these years, I've suprised a lot of people with my taste in music too. Also, I've been playing guitar for 14 years and when I play Yngwie people can't believe someone with short hair can do that stuff!

One last comment about Fates: I think everyone here who loves them has been responding because they enjoy them so much and want others to share the experience. I agree with everything good that was said about them.

Hey 'Jammers, and especially Anton Max:

My, we have a lot of Fates fans here, don't we? I bought my first Fates album solely because of recommendations from Ytsejam. So far, I'm very happy. I have Parallels, NE and ATG. I've yet to get into Parallels yet (lack of time), but for some reason ATG grew on me. I didn't even like it at first. I still don't know why I like it. It's so... disconnected? Unmelodic? I'm not sure.

Anyway, for Max: You talked about lyrics on ATG. Do you or anyone else have a copy of the lyrics to that album? My CD cover was devoid of any. As well you know, Arch can be hard to understand, although I kinda like what he does with his voice. I still think he says "Eating plastic feces..." at about 1:14 on 'Valley of the Dolls' (I think that's the one I mean). Listen to it! See what I mean? If someone could send me some lyrics, I'd be very grateful.

By the way, I'm 22 and have been a fan since I saw Dt's PMU on eMpTV. (March of '92?) Yeah, sorry, but I'll have to admit it. I did go on a long and dangerous search for WDADU just after I fell in love with IAW, though, so no flames. Come on, how many of you _REALLY_ started listening to DT in the days before IAW? Did WDADU even sell as many copies as there are people who claim this? :) Just joshin' you.

    Later guys! Glenn

Sorry to harp on the issue, but my ten year old sister is an acomplished piano player too. While she can read music with ease, she also plays by ear. She can sit down and play the piano parts to "Surrounded" and "Wait For Sleep." It drives me crazy. So, to all of you who want the transcribtions to DT songs, I suggest you learn how to play by ear. At least until they are officially put out by DT.

the first song is excellent... i think its better to just listen to the whole album straight through a couple times with no interruptions... leave the past behind is incredible and the way life in still water comes in after it is, much better than by itself.

It's like the lost DT song (Metropolis Part > 0.9) although it still sounds nothing like dream theater. dont expect dream theater when you try fates. fates are progressive songwriters rather than progressive instrumentalists writing songs... fates's songs always seem to flow much better than DT's songs, to me. they're subtly with their time signatures, for the most part. there are parts on parallels and inside out that are so smooth and natural they seem like 4/4 although they arent... kinda like how take the time is in 9/8 some of the time but it just flows naturally. perfect symmetry and no exit are more outright with their time signatures but they never seem unnatural.

Hear hear! I used to think my favourite DT songs were Learning to Live and Only A Matter of Time... but now, I think the A Mind Beside Itself trilogy is far and away the best they've done. I air-guiatr, bass, and drum my way through all of it, even doing a butchered rendition of James' vocals that makes dogs bark and cats hiss, no matter who happens to be around... I'm THAT turned on to it.

Heeding the advice of many Jammers I stopped and picked up the latest Tori Amos CD last night.

Not the only one... : )

We had about 2-3 inches of water throughout our warehouse and about 1 inch in our offices. I've had to tear out the carpets in our offices because of the flooding. But after seeing the news nobody here is really bitching much. We are moving to a new building very soon anyway so it's not really that big a deal.

Oh yea, DT content . . . Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater, Dream Theater

    That's probably enough!

Though I've been playing drums for about eight years or so, I by no stretch of the imagination am claiming to be the ultimate drum authority. Since the subject has been brought up, I thought I'd share with you what I consider to be the most difficult drum parts of DT in no paticular order:

Metropolis Pt. 1 Under a Glass Moon Take the Time Scarred Innocence Faded*

*The drum part is so unexpected to this song, yet it fits it perfectly, while at the same time being extremely complex.

    Richie

P.S. To the fan of Extreme, take comfort in the fact that there is another one out there like you. I heard a song from the new album called "There is No God" which was very heavy, but pretty cool at the same time.
