There wasn't a 665. (When the listserv program crashes (which is too often)
it will sometimes make the digest number skip one.)

    > BTW - How many are we getting per day? It seems to be atleast two a day!

Whenever 1000 lines are detected, a digest goes out. A digest also goes
out once every 24 hours, so it's possible to have many digests each day
(if there is a lot of traffic).

that's not barf bag. that's the guitar solo thing. someone with the radio show portnoy did, mike burstin i believe, confirmed that the one on LITS is barfbag because mike says so.

I just heard from my girlfriend over in London (another fellow ytsejammer, by the way: 'thebigo') and she told me some unreal news about her, regarding DT, that I thought you all would like to hear.....

She is a professional photographer studying her field in London for the semester. She has a friend who is originally from NYC and did concert reviews of DT when performed in and around NYC when they were starting out. Well, he still does ads and is very good friends with DT's people over at East Coast records. So happens that it is 99% positive that he is getting her PHOTO PASSES to do band-promo pictures of DT for their March 15th concert in London!!!! In addition, she has back stage pass privlages to shoot photos of the band as well!

I don't know if this has any effect on you all, but I was excited; I'm also jealous as SHIT!!!!!

    -jason-

p.s. As far as the drumming complexity of DT goes, good choices on TTT, Metrop. Learning to Live, Scarred, Erotom, etc.....However, give Only a Matter of Time a whirl! Mike is absolutely POSSESSED on that tune; Pure Genious!!!

    > Well I know most of you won't agree but Presto is my fave > Rush album.

Maybe not my favorite, but up there. No one has mentioned Red Tide. Anyway, I love Presto primarily for the piano parts (if it is in fact a piano and not a sample). I think the stark, acoustical key sound really fits them well - I wish they'd us it more often. I think you can thank Rupert Hine for a lot of the great sound on that album. He's a master, and Rush should have held onto him forever.

Secondly, and TOTALLY unrealated but back to DT, there's something I've been wondering for a long time and the guy who mentioned his legs cramping up playing bouble bass jogged my memory. My question is this: How do players like Mike do this??? Does he rest the heel of his feet on the floor at all times, or does he actually pump his legs up and down? If he pumps, is his stool placed high enough that his legs sort of dangle, because if his thighs are perpendicular to his torso, I don't see any way that he could keep up playing like this for extended periods of time.

Man, if that's all I have to worry about, I really need to get a life!

OK. So would you say that No Absolute Time is a more "violin-y" album than Tchokola?

(I just recalled this) Actually, Charles Bisharat wasn't a part of the band for a long time. I don't think he even appears on the first two Windham Hill albums. The first violinist they had joined them was Jamie Smazinski (spelling?). He reminded me of Ponty in a general way.

David Lewis... I remember that at one show, they had a keyboardist from Long Beach - a city in the "greater Los Angeles" area. They played a song of his called Race to Signal Hill. It was an upbeat ("racy"? <g>) jazz tune. I really wish he'd stayed with them long enough for it to get recorded.

I think my favorite song from that album is the title track (Shadowdance). But then I play RuneQuest, so that it always makes me think of Trolls... <g>

BTW, wasn't the self-titled the first for WH?

Yes it was. First they released Watercourse Way in 1975(?) on Passport Records - the same label that Synergy (Larry Fast) started on. (After, Passport went under, Synergy got picked up by JEM records, but I despaired of replacing my copy of Watercourse Way - which was getting very worn. (God, I loved that album - the CD is a remix - when I first heard it, it felt the same way I did the first time I heard WDADU!) At some point they signed up with Windham Hill and made several albums, the first two being Shadowfax and then Shadowdance. Eventually, they got the rights back for Watercourse Way and reissued it.

O.K., then I don't need it, since I have all the other albums. :-)

True. <g> In some ways, Shadowfax reminds me of a "kinder, gentler" Dream Theater.

Heh, finally finished reading my millions of messages (actually, it was only a little more than a thousand). But that's OK! So I'm elated to hear that we will soon have access to KM's demos, etc, etc, etc.

OK, so here's my question, with a little background:

Over Christmas break, I took home Awake to listen to. I meant to take along IandW, but left it behind. :(. BIG :(. Because, I hate to say it, I got tired of it. Needless to say, this disturbed me no end. And so I decided to try to find out why this happened. So as soon as I got home, I popped in IandW, and was instantly transfixed, mesmerised, yea, even discombobulated. It was like going to heaven, or at least like eating something that tastes especially yummy. And since, that disk has found its way into my player at least daily, sometimes being played repeatedly. (And here I must add that such airplay has been pritnear constant on my part ever since I got the heavenly relic, save that period of time just after I got Awake.) And this is what I seem to have noticed: There is a fullness to IandW which I cannot penetrate, and which I cannot find on Awake. In other words, when I first played Awake after my rebirth into IandW, there seemed to be holes in it, empty space which, though not large, were certainly disconcerting. For some reason, I think that this has to do with the keys and the drums in particular, and secondarily with the guitar, now that I think about it. The keys do not seem to be as present -- or at least they do not have the same presence -- in Awake. The drums, unfortunately, seem more mechanical on Awake -- though certainly a far sight better than most other drumming found nowadays. It's just not as technical, not as unexpected and complex in parts...not as enjoyable. And while the guitar is just as masterful, I would have to say what's been done to it is not. The heaviness drowns out much of the more subtle sounds -- mainly keys -- that were present in IandW; also, the fun doubling of key and guitar is not used as much -- that always seems to be a highlight of a song.

Well, my question is, Am I bloody spare? Or does this make sense to you?

And by the way, I do not say that I dislike Awake; I merely cannot like it as much as Images and Words, an album that will, for me, always be number one in my collexion.

Nah, just kidding. Instead, I'm going to spare you, gentle readers, by merely exposing you who are interested to a representative sample of my tastes through a small number of indespensible discs.

    1. Images and Words Dream Theiver..no, that's not it...Dream Easter...damn! 'nuff said.

    2. 2112 Rush -- an eternal classic. 34. Scenes/Introduction Marty Friedman -- these two are incomparable and inseparable -- and unbelievable

I know the numbers skip around sometimes as far as when I receive them, but I seem to be missing #664 and #665. Could some kind soul tell me which issue my post was in? And could the powers-that-be refresh me on how to obtain back issues again? (I know that that info was published recently, but I don't know where to find it again! : / )

    Sorry for the non-DT content...

In Ytsejam #666, Zack Gemmill said:

<<Jarrod, check out the band picture wall at The Boardwalk in Orangevale Dream Theater has an autographed picture on the wall. So does Fates Warning, for that matter.

Remember, when IAW *first* came out, DT did a *club* tour. I know, because I won free tickets to go to a club date here in the Bay Area. This was just before I went out and got the album. Like a loser, I didn't bother to go! I guess album sales improved and the label decided to support a tour of bigger venues.>>

Yes, this was the case... When I went to the show in SF last year, an old college friend of mine was also there, and he told me that Dream Theater did play in Sacramento (seems to have been the Boardwalk). When we were both still at UCD, a lot of his friends got tix for $5 a piece or something like that, and he had no idea why they all wanted to go to this show in Sacramento! Jarrod later bought "I&W," and I was introduced to the band by my husband on our very first date some year-and-a-half ago (I missed the Boardwalk show *and* "I&W" tour - sniff, sniff.) Despite the small venue, both Candlebox and Ynwie played there this year... >>> The next time the band plans a tour in Northern CA, I think we should unite > all of the local fans - and it wouldn't hurt if some of you Bay Area people > helped out. : ) (Yes, Bret, I know that I can already count you in!) I'm > beginning to think that if we look around long enough, maybe we can actually > fill the Crest this time! (I'm doing my own part by also trying to > indoctrinate prospective fans. <g>)<<

    >>I go to concerts in Sac. all the time (I used to live there over a decade ago). You guys *still* have the best radio station (93 Rock). If you have any complaints about it, just some down to San Jose and tune in to KSJO (92.3) I listen at night and you can bet, except for extreme overplay of Aerosmith and Van Halen, that this station is turning "Alternative". There are tons of songs that I haven't heard in over a year down here that when I travel into the valley I hear them right away (on Rock 104 -Stockton/Modesto- too. Be thankful, because down here, it's a Pearl Jam/STP/Offspring/Green Day/Nirvana/Whatever poser bands that have come out with 1 "hit" song in the last year or so and are nominated for 63 Grammys, marathon 24 hours a day.<<

Well, when I'm not listening to something from my immense musical collection, 93 Rock is one of the stations I listen to. (In fact, you may remember my mentioning 93 Rock as the thing that got me into harder rock in a past post...) And, hey, who's gonna complain when they just played QR's "Operation Mindcrime" in its entirety last Sunday! : )

104's another story... Some days - depending on how foggy it is - you can pick it up, but I've never had much of a chance to give it a real listen...

Anyhow, I was serious in saying that San Francisco fans could really help in drawing the band here. I was really disappointed to get passed over like that - my husband and I would have gone to *both* shows, had they played here!

And I have to ask this: Zack, were you the guy who requested "more Internet stuff" after the SF show? (And the one to solicit the ACoS scoop?) I'm a shy Ytsejammer - and one of the few females who stuck it out after the show. I was the one in all black, aside from a blue flannel shirt, with the tall dark blonde guy in an "I&W" tee. I was too awe-struck to say much to any of the band members!

I hope I don't sound demeaning with this, but I have to comment on something that has been disturbing me. Am I the only person in the world who likes prog-rock, loves DT, FW, Gentle Giant and the like, then gets on the net and hears of people loving Pantera? I just don't get the connection. I mean, I've given Pantera and similar bands a chance, but I do not see what they have to offer in the realm of serious musicianship, ala Dream Theater.

Don't get me wrong - I love hard rock. One of my favorite bands in the world is Bad Religion. But Pantera? I just don't see the appeal. It's just another loud death band, you know? They couldn't write a song like "LTL" or "Surrounded" if their lives depended on it, and even if they did, they certainly couldn't _sing_ it!?! What gives?

    My .02...

The album edition of ATG (which I am lucky enough to own, as it is my favorite FW album) contains full lyrics. I'm afraid I can't locate "eating plastic feces" anywhere in there, though. :>

First of all, I'll start by saying that I am an engineer too, or hope to be one in 3 (yeah, right) or four years. My current major is Materials Science and Engineering. I havn't heard all of the boots, demos, etc, but I can't say I have heard a DT song that was even close to being bad. I would have to agree that the lyrics to _Afterlife_ are a little weak, so maybe it is their "worst" song, but that doesn't say much. The radio edit of _Lie_ is probably near the bottom too, because it just seems wrong without _The Mirror_ before it, and without the album ending. And refering to some earlier discussion, I like Styx! John Haveman "Change this tire, It's a Dog!" - A Mechanic - Animainiacs

While we're discussing Extreme...I must disagree that III Sides to Every Story is weak (although you did say that it was their weakest album, not that it was weak). True, some of the social commentary is obvious ("Peacemaker Die", "Warheads", etc) to educated audiences (racial equality and sentiments of peace are ideas that hopefully most people have tackled by now). But, I find the music interesting and complex, and I especially like the last sequence, "Everything Under the Sun" about a man questioning his attempts to live up to his dreams and his faith, and in the end decides that, indeed, a "New day is coming." It's very similar to Metropolis Part I, in my opinion (after a long, draining sequence suggesting impending doom, there is peace, love, and hope in the end).

I do not know Pornograffiti or their original album very well, so I guess I don't know how it compares. Musically, I think III Sides is lighter than the other two, but III Sides is very lyrically interesting, much in the same way that Dream Theater (especially Images and Words) is lyrically interesting. If you like Dream Theater's lyrics and if Images and Words is closer to the center of your "heavy scale" than Awake, I highly recommend III Sides to Every Story.

I am interested if many of you think this is deliberate.

Heck, Erotomania incorporates so many themes and melodies from DT's other songs, it would REALLY surprise you. I have personally found (but am far too lazy to catalog with time frames) parts of:

A Fortune In Lies Ytsejam The Killing Hand Pull Me Under Learning to Live 6:00 Caught In a Web Innocence Faded Voices The Silent Man (most obvious of all)

Furthermore, in The Mirror you will find parts of the other four songs that follow it, and in Lifting Shadows off a Dream they pull in some brief bits from the early part of the album as well...

PUT IT ON MY VISA! :)

Or else I'd buy one and steal the other... gotta have both. If I were broke I'd steal both. I don't have much moral orientation when it comes to something like my music... hehe
