yeah, i'm noticing that too, awake is kinda boring compared to I&W.
awake is too divided... scarred could be incredible if they didnt
repeat the damn chorus at the end then go to the outro... its so
anticlimactic. ambi is ok, i dont have any problems with it. innocence
faded is excellent, and 6:00 is fine. ciaw is too sectioned and
predictable. the solo thing is cool but not enough to save it. lsoad
is becoming my favorite song off the album for the mood. but i think
the solo section thing is out of place. i like it but just going
straight into it doesn't work for me, they should've built into it a
bit. cant find any problems with SDV. the mirror/lie is great except
the solo at the end of lie is too quiet. it would have a lot more
power if the band were louder. come to think of it, voices is like
that too... when john starts his solo the band seems to get very quiet
because his huge guitar isn't there.

    > been done to it is not. The heaviness drowns out much of the more subtle

the heaviness doesn't drown out the keys, the production does. the
keys were mixed in quieter. i still think kevin wanted it that way to
hmake him more replacable. the next album, with a steady keyboardist,
    should be awesome.

    > doubling of key and guitar is not used as much -- that always seems to be
    > a highlight of a song.

caught in a web, scarred, lsoad and innocence faded (a bit) do it but
the keys are mixed back. and on if they sound a lot like a guitar

yep... except for the number one thing....

    URGENT!!! URGENT!!!

Listen carefully. I have 2 tickets to the covers gig in London on Tuesday, but
it doesn't look like I can make it down to London. I want to keep one of the
tickets, just in case I can make it, but I'm offering the other to YJammers
in London or South-East England who can make it to London by 5pm on Tuesday at
    VERY short notice.

If you want it, send me personal email *NOW* giving your name and postal
address. I'll send it first-class ASAP. You may not get it in time, but at
    least I tried! :)

    First-come-first-served.

interested in trading for anything? you can check my web page for my
album list and bootleg list. you shhould hear mastermind and black
jester... incredible bands in the same vein as DT. mastermind's
drummer is absolutely incredible, as is the guitarist (who does synth
guitar stuff too... very well done). mastermind is like, ELP using
electric guitar and guitar synth, with a real singer and good lyrics,
better songwriting ability, and an incredible drummer, all mixed with
dream theater. black jester is a neoclassical metal band, kinda like
wdadu or early yngwie and they're very exciting... very cool

I would have to say that Lie is my least favorite DT song... It just
doesn't fit into their other music... I skip Lie about half of the
time when listening to Awake... Anyway, that's my opinion...

    Just me again guys . . . .

This is an exact quote from the letter I got when they sent me my tickets to the covers concert:

"Some of the special guests who have confirmed that they will be appearing include: Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, Glen Tipton, Steve Rothery, and Barney (Napalm Death).

The show is also being recorded, and may possibly be used at a later date for either a mini-album or extra tracks on future singles."

Sounds like it should be awesome!

    Take care :)

Well, I found A Kick Into A Dream yesterday... It is, as mentioned before, from the Manhattan Center show. I'd give it at most B quality... possibly lower... It can't compare to DoE, LitS, or any of the FM shows... The sound is not bad, but sometimes inconsistant... James seems to fade out every so often, as do some of the other guys every so often...

The packaging is pretty cool... It has individual picturse of James, Myung, Petrucci, and Mike on the front and individual ones inside the jacket. It also has a group (just the 4 of them) inside, with the 4 of them mentioned as the bamd, followed by: "Keyboardist Kevin Moore left the "Dream Theater" a few weeks ago right after the finishing touches to "Awake" album. Good Luck to you Kevin!!! Provisional replacement (only?) for the present gig: Mr. Derek Shuranian - keyboards" I think that that is pretty cool that the liner was correct (except in the spellin, I think). It also lists Lie as Lies, but that is the only mistake, including getting TOWHTSTS correct. As mentioned before, it is a Metal Crash/Why Not? CD.

My only real problem is that I got a bad disc, and have to call the shop up... In the middle of TTT, there is a glitch that makes the CD skip a few times for a 10-15 sec period... :( But I should be able to get another one... I hope that they have another copy now, and I dont have to wait for another one to come in (I have been waiting for this one for about 1.5 weeks to show up...)

My third post of the day . . . sorry everyone :-)

Dream Theater has lots of songs I don't like. The guitar intro to "Under A Glass Moon" annoys the hell out of me.

All of "Learning to Live" (apart from that nice quiet acoustic bit in the middle) annoys me. Yeah, I know it has wonderful deep meaningful lyrics, but the music makes me cringe every time.

I am bored to death with "Bombay Vindaloo". "Caught in a Web" simply fails to excite me or hold my attention.

But on the other hand, there are so many DT songs which blow me away! The best ones are "Surrounded", "Pull Me Under", "Metropolis", "6:00", "Voices", and "Space Dye Vest".

    IMHO.

Well, ordinarily I'd be the last one to be breathing flames, especially on this list, but you seem quite worthy. Did you ever hear of a little thing called _diversity_? It's true; there ARE people in this world who can find something to appreciate in more than just ONE genre of music...you sound just like my next door neighbor (whose listening range consists solely of Pantera, Biohazard, Sepultura, etc.) who can't understand how I can go from Ministry to Bach to GWAR to Dream Theater to Slayer to Maynard Ferguson to Bad Brains to Van Halen to S.O.D. No, Pantera probably WOULDN'T (I doubt if they couldn't) write a song like "LTL" or "Surrounded", but I don't think DT would write a song like "No Good (Attack the Radical)" or "Live in a Hole"; you know why? BECAUSE THEY'RE 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BANDS!!! That comment was among the more musically ignorant I've seen. There's room for much more in this world than JUST prog, and if that's all you see as worthy of your ears, you're missing a LOT. As for them being "another loud death band", you could at least do a little research before making such comments. First of all, if Pantera were to be pigeon-holed, they would fit into the "thrash" category; "death metal" would not suit them because they don't write the same kind of lyrics or music that "death metal" bands do. They're also quite a bit more musically competent than you probably took any time to see. I don't happen to care for Fates Warning, but you don't see me coming in here lambasting those who do just because _I_DON'T_GET_IT_. It's really rather simple: people have different tastes and opinions, and an opinion is NOT something that's right or wrong, even yours. Now that I think about it, "Live in a Hole" sounds like you: "Live in a hole, but stay close to my kind because they understand what burns in my mind"

    --Rob

P.S.--BTW, you might be interested to know that part of Mike Portnoy's drum solo on the I&W tour (as featured on the "Live in Tokyo" video) is taken from a Pantera song...

I have no idea what type of music it is or anything... please send all replies to me via email.

Hi there Please stop the fighting about whether FW is good or not. I think we will have to accept that we dont have exactly the same taste about everything, (thank God).

Do you remember some weeks ago when we discussed why other people didn't like DT, and how stupid they must be, and how revolting MainStreamMusic is ? I think the same thing is coming up now with FW. Some music takes time to get into, and some will never be YOUR sort of music. Just don't kill anyone for it.

I havent really got into FW yet, though I have only listened to them briefly some times. They havent made that impression on me yet, perhaps after the Stockholm-show. I do REALLY look forward to that...

We probably just have different tastes. I listen to Pantera because they hold nothing back musically or lyrically. They just totally rock. They also have awesome lyrics. And I know that they aren't as musically complex as DT but they are still very tight and hve talent. You have not lived until you see Pantera live. Granted I don't like them as much as Rush and DT but quite simply Pantera just kicks ass!

I just picked up on the Freaks list that Steve Rothery of Marillion will be joining DT for "Warm Wet Circles".

Is this the show of the decade or what?

Would someone please send me a list of good DT boots? My buddy has "DoE" and it is great! I read something about one called "Kick into (a, the) Dream" and that one sounds good too. There is a local record store that can order boots, but I don't know any titles, other than the two I mentioned, to order. Plus, I'm pretty new to the whole bootleg thing. Could someone help me out? thanx! Mike

Hmm. It seems to me that there is more venom here than I ever dreamed of. I asked a simple question, in a very open-minded vein. Fact is, I've tried to appreciate Pantera, and there are similar bands that I enjoy very much (Anacrusis comes to mind right away). My post was not in any way "Pantera bashing", as you seem to think it was...rather, I was appealing to a group of people who obviously share some views with me to explain what to look for in their music.

Now, on to the ranting and raving...

Did you ever hear of > a little thing called _diversity_? It's true; there ARE people in this > world who can find something to appreciate in more than just ONE genre of > music...you sound just like my next door neighbor (whose listening range > consists solely of Pantera, Biohazard, Sepultura, etc.) who can't > understand how I can go from Ministry to Bach to GWAR to Dream Theater to > Slayer to Maynard Ferguson to Bad Brains to Van Halen to S.O.D.

Would you like to know what I am listening to right this minute? I'm listening to Mandy Patinkin doing Broadway and jazz standards. When that is over, I might put in Phish or Bach or Bad Religion or 24-7 Spyz. So yes, I have heard of diversity...seems that it doesn't count unless I list the same bands as you do, though, eh?

No, > Pantera probably WOULDN'T (I doubt if they couldn't) write a song like "LTL" > or "Surrounded", but I don't think DT would write a song like "No Good > (Attack the Radical)" or "Live in a Hole"; you know why? BECAUSE THEY'RE 2 > COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BANDS!!! That comment was among the more musically > ignorant I've seen.

If you're trying to tell me that there is no such thing as bad songwriting, just "different" songwriting, then you're a hypocrite. Any one of us "musical intelligentsia" on this list will express distaste over various forms of bad musicianship, whether they see it as being Bon Jovi or Tesla or some other.

    > As for them being "another loud death band", you could at least do > a little research before making such comments. First of all, if Pantera > were to be pigeon-holed, they would fit into the "thrash" category; > "death metal" would not suit them because they don't write the same kind > of lyrics or music that "death metal" bands do. They're also quite a bit > more musically competent than you probably took any time to see.

Now we're into putting things in categories. I thought that practice had been stopped a long time ago!

    > I don't happen to care for Fates Warning, but you don't see me > coming in here lambasting those who do just because _I_DON'T_GET_IT_.

And you didn't see me lambasting anybody, either. I asked a simple question in a very noncombative manner. More than once, there have been bands that I just couldn't get into, until I spent some time talking with people who enjoyed them, finding out what they were hearing in the music, what they got out of it. From that, I developed an appreciation.

I think what really happened here is that I happened to ask a question about a band that is dear to you, and you got your back up. Nobody is attacking anybody here. Grow up.

    > It's really rather simple: people have different tastes and opinions, and > an opinion is NOT something that's right or wrong, even yours. Now that > I think about it, "Live in a Hole" sounds like you: > > "Live in a hole, but stay close to my kind > because they understand what burns in my mind"

By saying this, you're showing how quickly you judge things, without enough knowledge. You know nothing about me except the picture you have formed in your head. Maybe the comments I made reminded you of things you have heard from other people, and you projected them onto me. In any case, I'm very sorry that you are so upset by my post. I'm not a bit sorry for what I said, but rather for the way it made you feel.

    My .02,

    James

I am back from one of my best ventures to the record store ever...I spent $3.00. You are saying, "Doesn't sound THAT great." I bought 6 Dream Theater album-sized promos for Awake. They are the front cover of the Awake Disc on one side, and on the other is the group shot of the band from the inlay. I AM FREAKING OUT. I actually found DT stuff to put up on my walls here. But this, man, AWAKE! I am excited!

TOUGHEST DT SONG FOR PERCUSSION/DRUMS: #1. Metropolis (by far) 5.00 to the end, ...5.50 (listen to the ride) #2. TTT has some tough parts in it as well... ...I think that *by far* the perc. for I&W is much tougher than Awake...

WORST DT TUNE #1. I don't think that there is one! (although I agree that Innocence is weak.)

I don't care for the recording of the drums/perc. on Awake. Does anyone else agree with me here? The snare drives me up the wall. (The drum kick at the beginning of Innocence...Auugghhhh!!!) I like the sound of the drums much better on I&W. I am wondering if anyone knows what was used on the snare for I&W?...it has alot added to it. Example--> 3.25 Metropolis. I think that it could ALL be digital on I&W. Talk to me.

That about it...I'd like to add that because of Ystejam, I went out and bought FW - Inside Out. LAME. Are there any better ones?

    Later,

pantera have potential (as heard in Regular People) but they're too concerned with their image and trying to be badasses which is why the last album has fewer riffs than songs and pathetically childish lyrics.

morbig angel is an example of a heavy band that's tight, intelligent, original, and very powerful. if you get a chance to see them i promise you'll be blown away. iinstead of making stupid jokes about hemp and sex, they just put their heads down and play. the guitarist, trey azagthoth, plays like he's insane. he doesn't quite have the technical ability of jp, although he's excellent, he plays with an incredible amount of feel even in his wild fast atonal solos.
