        You almost had it--and that's a good call. I wasn't paying much
attention when I typed, except for that little fumble in the printing on
the CD sleeve. This technique is called alliteration to poets. Edgar
Allan Poe was quite fond of it in "The Raven." Consonance is similar,
too--it involves words that have the same sound in consonants but *not*
vowels in the same line--and these are *usually* at the *end* of a word,
while alliteration involves the beginning letters of the word.

I read that a few of the ranks here have seen *more* than one Fates
Warning video on HBB and MTV--and I'm glad they actually did play them
once. In all my years, I've only seen "Pull Me Under," "Point of View,"
and "Lie" on MTV. Back when "Parallels" came out, I can remember "Point
of View" being played *extensively* for a span of perhaps two weeks--but
    then nothing.

While on the subject of Bruce Dickinson possibly joining DT on an old
'Maiden cover tune, I'd like to recommend Bruce's latest solo effort to my
fellow Ytsejam members. I find the album very interesting--and I enjoy
the work of guitarist Roy Z.--who is in the LA-based band Tribe of
Gypsies. Members of Tribe of Gypsies back up Bruce on this album--"Balls
to Picasso" (on the Mercury label BTW, in case anyone's searching for it).
IMHO Tribe is a very interesting and diverse band with some genuine Latin
influences, but still very heavy. On an interesting note to anyone who
owns the Dickinson album, check out the guitar solo on "Tears of the
Dragon"--which was played with *all of three finger on the left hand*--Roy
cut his left pinky down to the bone the day before he was scheduled to
record--and he's truly a *ten-fingered* guitarist. He went all out for
*feel* on that lead. I hope to see a Tribe of Gypsies album within the
    next year and a half.

Okay, but is there anyone out there who could do the time listing
for me? My inferior disc player dosen't show the time. The most obvious
part of Erotomania is in the middle from the Silent Man.

First a few measures of Kev playing piano that mimics the lyrics...
"when there is reason, tonight im awake, when theres no answer, arrive tsm"

Then Petrucci makes it VERY obvious by playing that same sequence on his
guitar (now remember in TSM, James is SINGING these notes)
"if there is balance... tonight hes awake,
if they have to suffer, there lies the silent man"

Then Petrucci does a downward scale that sounds RAELLY cool and then he
plays on the guitar Kevin's "violin" part from the solo:

daaaaaahh dah duh dooooooooo DAAH dah DI-DI-DAAAA! da-da-DAAAA! dah dah dah

(etc) and then it goes into the "I....caught in a web.... numb from the
    world!" melody in Erotomania.

BUY A STEREO RECORDING WALKMAN!!!!! You can return it the day

I've always liked their music, I just have an impossibly hard time
listening to the vocals. That's the case for me with many ultra-hard
metal bands. If Pantera ever made an instrumental album, or got a
different singer, I'd probably buy it.

The intensity you speak of is what draws me to Bad Religion. The great
thing about them is that they have _very_ intelligent lyrics, a big plus
to me. I'd recommend them to any DT fan.

Well... no matter how bad that part may be (I don't have a problem with
it) the instrumental at the end (the last 2 minutes) makes up for the
whole entire album! That's one of the best moments on Awake!

    Now.... on to other things.

Who is the youngest? I am 16... can anyone beat me?

Now.... on to other things. :)

While John Petrucci's intense, fast playing is always so awesome, I have
also found bands that are more subtle can be just as satisifying. One of
these bands is Fates Warning. Inside Out is an great album, I really like
the last three songs on the album. Also Awaken the Guardian is an AWESOME
album. Every Ytsejamer needs to get this album. It's not as progressive
as Inside Out is, but it's just so intense and powerful you can't turn it
down. Not as mellow as their new stuff. Plus, it has the best album cover
I've ever seen. Those who have this CD know what I'm talking about, this
    cover kicks ass.

Now... another band that I have discovered recently like this is Genesis.
Now i'm not talking about the commertial 45-minute drivel-cds the group
has put out in the last few years, but the OLD stuff they've done. I got
_And the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway_ for Christmas along with a lot of
other progressive cds (such as Close to the Edge, Thick as a Brick, and
Discipline, Tarkus, all four great CDs.) Now, when I listened to the
Genesis CD at first I though, hey, where's all the complex playing, the 15
minute instrumentals, the odd meter changes? And so I primarily listened
to the other progressive CDs I got.

But just recently I've been listening to Lamb a LOT more... in fact, I
can only find one "song" on this CD I don't like and that really isn't a
song, its actually a bunch of noises that they try to call a song. (Its
also 5 damn minutes, but what the hell, the rest of the songs are all
great.) Anyway, this cd contains some of the best song writing I've ever
heard. It's ridiculously complex even too! Well... some of it is at
least. You've never heard a real keyboard solo until you've heard "Riding
the Scree." And the lyrics are great. Its a 2CD concept album about
God-knows-what, but it cool whatever it is. And the singing is some of
the best I've heard. But the thing that blows me away about this CD is
how they can take complex music and make it sound so beautiful. "In the
Rapids" is has such emotional, beautiful playing, mixing piano, bass, synth
drums and singing. I don't think songwriting gets any better than this.
And I enjoy ALL of the songs on the CD! The production is so great that
it sounds like it was made yesterday, not back in 1974. Powerful bass,
crystal clear singing, deep powerful piano. This CD has it all... Can
anyone else comment on this CD? And if you don't already have it, GET
THIS CD... It's not mellow as I first thought it to be, it can sometimes
be almost scary in the way they play the songs, and at other things
    simplistic and beautiful.

Well... we're both 16. Anyone younger, or should we both start comparing
birthdays to find out who's younger?

either way Beth has me beat in terms of how long she's been listening to
DT... I started with IAW about 7 months ago. (And no, not because I heard
Pull me Under on MTV or the radio, but because I heard Ytsejam at a
    friends house.)

I caught them at the Roxy, in Long Island, on 10/5. Overall the show was good, but I went to the show with a bunch of friends who gave up on them after No Exit, so their vibe kinda put a damper on my enjoying the show. However, the Guardian encore clinched it for all of us :) I only wish that they played more older stuff (they stuck exclusively to the last three albums) but hey, you can't have everything.

    What's up everyone?

Look, I'm sorry I forgot to include all the females in my last post's intro. Please, could you women quite hassling me already? So tell me what you like better: Dear Jammers and Jammetes, or Dear SIBLINGS of DT?

All others who really don't give two shits about the above but are now pissed at me for writing it, another "I'm sorry" goes out to you. I can't win.

Just had a few things on my mind from this week:

    >If Rush and DT came out with a new album on the same day and you only had > enough money for one, which one would you get and why?

Simple, hook up with someone who'll buy them for me. (I can feel the hate mail already). Actually, I'd buy the DT first because I'm not into Rush....YET.

    >But Pantera? I just don't see the appeal. It's >just another loud death band, you know? They couldn't write a song like >"LTL" or "Surrounded" if their lives depended on it, and even if they >did, they certainly couldn't _sing_ it!?! What gives?

I think they do have a lighter "easy listening" accoustical. I forget the name - I'm suprised because Q104 in NYC plays the hell out of it. Anyway, I have to agree with you though in that they could never even come remotely close to the coolness of DT. Um, just thought I'd throw in the following clearly related fact if anyone is interested. Type-o-Negative and Pantera are going to be playing in Utica NY on Feb. 26. Anyone near Ithaca NY interested? I could use a size 15 boot stomping on my face! Oh, and my arms have been attached for quite too long now...

    > The solo on the Live in Tokyo video, after "To Live Forever" is called > "Barfbag"... etc., etc., etc.

Does anyone know *for sure* the "official" set list for the LitS boot? It would really be appreciated

    > I was wondering what you guys thought was the worst Dream Theater song. > I know all their songs are good, but which ones do you think are the > least good?

Um....any song involved with Charlie Dominichi. Easy enough. But not including Dom.:

    >Of the three studio albums' worth of material, the worst song >imho would have to be either Afterlife or Innocence Faded.

Ouch! Dude, man, that hurts. I can't believe you don't like Afterlife! I love it (but only with LaBrie, of course). And Innocence Faded too?! Damn, I feel like I'm trying to convince someone that DT is cool. I'm sure you're all familiar with that feeling. I'm going to refrain from answering "the worst song" question because it's like trying to decide who is your least favorite son or daughter. Actually, that would be easier because there are more songs. I don't have any children yet (knock on wood, please...a few more times!) but I'm sure I can imagine.

Last thing (sorry for length): Does anyone have the address for the internet music store, cd.now or something. A friend of mine here would like to order WDADU. Thanks.

    1. Attn William Kriski; You were looking for instrumental guitar stuff in a jazz theme? I think? Check out Alex DeGrassi on the Windham hill label. Incredible feeling in his playing. Metheny is coming to my area in Feb. I've never seen him live, I've never seen any jazz live, so I don't know what to expect, but I think I'll enjoy it.

    2. Attn Richard Grayson; In your review of DT you stated that JP played a custom 7 string guitar, although I'm sure his guitar has been customized (most guitar players are) you can buy 7 string guitars in stores i.e. Ibanez and Steve Vai was the first that I know of to really bring attention to it. Just wondered if you knew cause it sort of came accross that JP was the only person to play a 7 string before.

    3. On Mon Jan 23rd Atsushi Kawami wrote about his Valley Arts guitar, Valley Arts I think are based in LA and are a very top of the line guitar that used to about 3 or 4 years ago demand a starting price of I think $1,100 US dollars. I don't know if they are still around but they are a small company so thats probably why JP acted like he hadn't heard of them, But you have got a very nice guitar!!!!!!!

    4. 1-25-95 Jeremy Haynes wrote about "sell outs" like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Kiss, Michael Bolton etc. First of all what makes these bands sell outs? From listening to Kiss and Bon Jovi since they first came out neither of these groups have changed there musical styles to the point of "selling out" that is just the style of music they choose to write. If anything Kiss has shined away from being "mainstream" or "a sell out". Listen to 'Revenge' it is the hardest album Kiss has ever put out. Although they did follow trend in the late '70's and the disco thing but I would definitely not consider them a sellout. Sellouts would be Metallica, Green Day, Offspring, Pantera, Stryper. These bands have mellowed their style or changed drastically one way or another to become more popu$lar. And one more thing, I don't know if you play guitar or write lyrics, but it is a hell of alot harder to write a #1 "Bon Jovi" type song than not to.

    5. Attn James Becker; You wrote that the Mirror was your least favorite song I am curious as to why? This "worst song" stuff is gonna get ugly. The song I dislike the most from DT is *gulp* "Surrounded" only because of that one part "Light to dark, dark to Light, Light....." it sounds so $%^#$%^ stupid. One jammers opinion. Oh one more thing James, you said Pantera couldn't write songs like "Surrounded" and "LtL" try to find some of their Hairspray mainstream stuff before they turned hardcore, they had some really good stuff back then. (I hate pantera now just so you know).

That is all sorry for the length. John SRVRIP@aol.com

Well, if you went to the Baltimore show and waited around afterwards you could get one of these for free and signed by the band.

    Re: Violins-

About Dixie Dregs, Jerry Goodman is the man in question. Someone here mentioned John Mclaughlin, so the two of them pointed me toward Mahavishnu Orchestra. I picked up their live album Between Nothingness and Eternity. Major intensity throughout the disc, with 40+minutes of jazz fusion excitement. Jan Hammer (of Miami Vice fame) is also featured prominently in this record, even though it is Mglaughlin who leads the way.

Believer (RIP) also features a violin, cello and soprano in one song off each of their last two albums: Dies Irae (from Sanity Obscure) and Trilogy of Knowledge (Dimensions). Some jammers might not like them too much since they're a thrash band, and their vocals are definitely an acquired taste. The string arrangements are not over the top progressive, but are done very tastefully and flow with the heaviness of the band.

    Re: Worst DT song.

I could see why some don't like IF. I think the end jam section does save the tune, and I only wish that it could've been longer. CiaW's middle section, while subtler than Metropolis', is just as difficult to play. As far as my pick for worst DT song, if anything, I'd say LSOAD simply as a matter of personal taste. I don't see anything special there except for JP's guitar work during the verses (listen closely) and the middle instrumental section. Also, it seems that the only time I get to concentrate on the music I listen to, is on the subway on the way to/from school or work, so for me, the quieter stuff gets skipped 'cause it's difficult to hear in those conditions, like Another Day, Voices/TSM, and Surrounded.

    Re: Production.

The I&W snare sound was (I think) discussed here previously, and (correct me if i'm wrong) it was triggered. While the drumming might be just a teeny bit less intricate on Awake, it sounds a hell of a lot better, more realistic.

As a keyboard player, I really enjoyed the complex interplay between KM & JP on I&W (damn those abbreviations). It's still there in Awake, and the problem is not in the mix. Moore tended to use 'dirty-sounding' samples this time around, and it blends almost completely with the guitars. Listen to CiaW with headphones, keys-left, guitars-right, it's all there.

My only guess to why it came out this way is that Kevin's heart just wasn't totally into the band by the time recording started, so he limited his presence, I personally don't believe that it was a matter of making himself easier to replace.

    That's enough for now, later

Where can I get these? Black Jester sounds particularly appealing. WDADU is my favorite CD of all time, also my fav DT cd...

pantera are not death metal. death metal bands tend to be more artistic than pantera and pantera are not even close in sound. maybe you should borrow death's "individual thought patterns". serious musicianship, good songs, blows pantera away.

IMHO, Awake is much better than I&W. IMHO, I&W is too "light", and Awake is definetly dark. Scarred is my favorite track, it sends chills down my spine. I love Caught In A Web, and innocence faded. I think it's hard to compare albums. Look at Queensryche. You never know what to expect. They are very diverse, and DT shows in Awake that they are too.

The snare sound is so full on I&W because it was triggered. A trigger is basically a device that picks up the sound of the drum when it is hit and processes it digitally into a computer or MIDI interface. From there they can do whatever they want to that sound. I personally can't stand that sound but that's just me. I love I&W and the drumming on it, don't get me wrong there, but the snare sounds so unnatural. I'm a big fan of accoustic drums sounding the way they're naturally meant to and apparently Portnoy is too. He said in an interview with Modern Drummer magazine (I forget the month of the issue but if you want it I can find it for you) that the decision to put the trigger on there was made by the producer and not himself. He says he didn't like it because it took out many of the ghost notes and such that he played on that album but there was nothing he could say about it at the time. I personally love the accoustic sound on Awake. To me I&W sounds a hell of a lot more mechanical drumwise than Awake does and the overall sound of Awake just blows me away. I&W could've been that much better had they left the trigger off the snare drum because you would be able to hear the little things...but that's just my opinion so no flames please.

On a side note, I would like to know what the best quality Dream Theater boot available is, I need to start my boot collection.

    Thanks a lot

    Jeff

For those in the UK really... I just got off the phone with some guy that claimed to be Steve Rothery. Apparantly Dream Theater is playing a concert in London on Tuesday, some kind of special gig where they are going to play cover songs from bands that influenced them. They have invited some of the musicians there and one of them is Steve, who will be joining them on stage to play 'Warm Wet Circles.' Of course Steve had a lot of interesting news from the Marillion camp which I am in the process of transcribing for the next issue of The Web USA, but I wanted to post this right away because it is happening in 3 days.
