    I think 6:00 is a big cheeseball song.... I'll skip it all the time when I

but I must say... those who don't like IF are forgeting something... it's
a normal rock song... not mean't to be anything else, sure  a little

    Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but the video for "Monument"
was included on one of those Rock Video Monthly compilation tapes.
Now that Headbangers Ball is dead and kaput, I'm kinda glad I
subscribed to RVM.  It's not terribly expensive and their choices of
bands on the Heavy Metal tapes are pretty good; not yer basic
mallternative bands like we'd see too often on HBB.

    The drum sound on Awake blows away Images.  Ask Portnoy..he'll tell you
himself.  For one thing you can't even hear his cymbals on Images and his
snare is totally annoying.  All ghost notes and little nauances are gone due
to the fact that his snare is sampled.  A sampled drum sounds means that a
trigger is applied to the drums and sent to a midi source, then you get
whatever sound you have sampled.  This is also the worst sounding snare
sample I've ever heard.

    As far as hard drum songs...When trying to learn Metropolis use the live
version from Live at the Marquee... I'ts much easier to learn how to count
the end of the insrtumental section this way.  I first learned that part at a
show!  Watching Mike play it...

    I think the hardest song would be Learning to Live.  That is..playing it
exact.  Stuff on the first album is pretty tricky as well.  Check out the
fill right before John P.s solo on TWHTSTS  Very cool
Oh yeah another cool part...check out Mike's kick pattern in the second verse
of Innocence Faded. That part totally makes the song for me.

    Well theres my 2 cents.

    Oh yeah did anyone get the Divine Regale tape??  Let's hear some feedback

    That "light to dark" part is one of the reasons I like Surrounded :)

    Shadowfax is an incredible new-age/fusion/jazz group.  I have every CD 
they have put out and I would recommend 'The Odd Get Even' - It is my 
favorite.  I am also a huge Michael Hedges fan!  Check out 'Aerial 
Boundaries' - He sounds like 3 acoustic guitars at once without over dubbing!

    WORST DT SONG:  Lie  (Still hate it - although the outro is great)
"You can make a fortune in 'lies'"  :)

    It seems like there are several people on this list with diverse musical 
interests.  I'm curious.  How many ytsejammers like NIN.  NIN is one of 
my favorite 'bands(?)'!  I've seen NIN twice on the current tour and the 
show is amazing.  I'll bet there are a lot on NIN haters on this list but 
I'm sure some of us like NIN.  Just curious...

    Uh, sure I have. I've never heard Tony Banks approach Kevin Moore as
far as soloing is concerned. He writes (er, wrote) fantastic melodies,
though. And his solos are nothing to laugh at, but I wouldn't characterize
any of them as especially "real" compared with everything else I've ever heard.

    The Lamb is indeed a great CD. Most early Genesis is like this, although
some of it is pretty poorly produced. Check out A Trick of the Tail and
Nursery Cryme. And while you're at it, check out Trespass and all the
other early Genesis stuff.

    You can be certain I've heard Steve Vai playing his 7-string Ibanez
Universe on "The Audience is Listening" and in Light Without Heat.  No,
John Petrucci isn't the first person to use a 7-string--but I personally
find him to be the guitarist who uses the low "B" string most tastefully
within songs.  Yes, anyone can walk into a large guitar shop and plunk
down some serious money (in the $1000 arena).  I say custom because John
Petrucci does not use the precise same type of guitar that Steve Vai does,
though it is similar--and you're absolutely right about how guitarists
will go in for options like better pickups, scalloped fretboard, etc.,
etc.  Actually, some of the Vai models out there have scalloped frets on
the higher registers...  from about the 19th fret on.  The Yngwie
Signature Series Strat from Fender comes with a completely scalloped
fretboard, however.

    sorry again for accidentally posting that... you can get both black
jester and mastermind from progresssive records international. black
jester was $12.98 (german import) and mastermind is $11.98 for either
of the domestically available albums. i got mine directly from the
guitaris, bill berends (bberends@pipeline.com), although it was more

    Yep, I agree that Bruce Dickinson's new solo stuff is pretty good. I saw him
live, and the set consisted of "Balls to Picasso" in its entirety, and a few
songs from his earlier "Tattoed Millionaire". It was an amazing show - the band
are all young and energetic, and the playing was shit-hot.

    The band he toured with are now his 'permanent' band, and he'll be recording 
with them.

    Bruce looked a lot happier than he ever did with Maiden. :-)

    In Ytsejam Digest 671, SRVRIP@aol.com gave some examples of bands which 
he considers "sellouts", and included Pantera as one of those examples. 
What I would like to know is: how the hell have Pantera sold out? If 
anything, they have gotten harder and less "commercial" with every album. 
Granted, they have changed their style over the past few years, but they 
went from being a more mainstream band to being one of the hardest acts 
ever on a major label, and they made the change back when big-haired glam 
bands like Poison and Warrant were at the height of their popularity. How 
does moving farther and farther away from the commercially accepted 
mainstream make them sellouts? I just don't get it. I may be somewhat 
biased on this issue, since I like Pantera even more then I like DT, but 
calling Pantera "sellouts" is nonsense.

    No, I think he meant that that kind of song writing is hard enough, without
comparing it to DT's songwriting. To get a "number one Bon Jovi hit", one has
to appeal to everyone so that everyone will like it.  I guess one could 
call it selling out one's artistic intregrity for money but who knows if
he had any in the first place?  I don't think DT ever really cared about
appealing to everyone but Bon Jovi did so I wouldn't compare the two when
they obviously had different musical goals in mind.  Too bad Bon Jovi has
to suck ;)

The packaging is ok, with a chrome font for the dream theater, and all
5 guys' heads floating over a live stage shot, with the stage mostly
dark.  The CD is a picture disc, with the flaming heart from LatM on
the cover (looks like a 2 or 3 color scan)
