Just got back from a cd show. Didn't find any post Awake stuff except
a video from the Pittsburgh show. I didn't buy it since the guy selling
it said the audio of the video camera goes in and out. He let me see
some of it and I didn't think I could take it. I didn't find any
Awake boot cds. I did pick up Lost in the Sky (what awesome packaging and
photos) and Lords of Sound. Lost in the Sky was the first time I have
heard James doing Afterlife and it was killer. Can't wait to hear
Status Seeker on Lords of Sound (well, it better be, I see that PMU
is already on there, unlike Home Sweet Home where it lists Status Seeker
    but the song is PMU)

I did pick up a Fates video boot when they were by themselves. It is
from Pittsbugh 11-7-94. I give the video an A and the sound a B. What a
great show. I wish Fates had come to the DC/Balt area.
    The setlist:
    face the fear/life in still water/outside looking in/pale fire/the
    eleventh hour (wow!)/the strand/point of view/down to the wire/don't
    follow me/nothing left to say/monument/eye to eye/through different eyes/
    guardian

I also picked up a couple of Rush videos:
Exit Stage Left from Japanese laser disc(reportedly out of print now)
and Row the Boats from 12-12-91 in Albany.
Haven't seen much of them except the portions at the show. I got all
3 videos today for 45$ which is a great deal.

I find this whole Pantera thing real interesting. Especially this commen

Jovi or Tesla or some other. "<<<<<<
Now I'm gonna preach. There is such thing as bad musicianship, but it depends
on what you're looking for. Let's all keep in mind that music has many differ-
ent purposes. For every band on the planet, there's someone who finds something
oood in their sounds. Like most of us, I listen to an awful lot of stuff, but
I will never claim that it's all good for any of the same reasons. How do we
define "good" music. It seems to me that a descriptive word needs to be put in
there. zGood fun music, good technical music, good driving music, good headbangi
ng music, good romantic music, good rap music, good dance music, good mad music
and so on and so forth. Dream Theatre and Pantera are completely different bands
and so I listen to them for completely different reasons. Almost. I will not
however, discredit Pantera's technical skill. the guitar solos burn my ears
with their intensity, their grooves are tight, and the inspire some amazing emot
ions at times. (And they were better in the 80s.) Dream Theater are just differn
    t. When we talk about Bon Jovi or Tesla, we won't talk to much about good guitar
solos, or tight grooves. Their music is ALL feeling for me. It's fun, or it's
moving, or I just feel like hearing an e-chord played clean and bright with
a simple fee-good beat. There's nothing wrong with that, and I challenge the
so-called "musical intelligensia" to write songs that do so much for the
female libido. (Sorry, but Dream Theater does not get the women)(Hope that
doesn't offend anyone, but it makes my point.) All music serves a different
purpose, and any music which fulfills it's purpose, is good music.
    ROCK ON!

I have taken it upon myself to do the DREAM THEATER POLL.
    >
Most of you have probably never seen me say anything on the list, but let
me assure you that I'm a huge DT fan, with all the albums and Majesty demos.
I don't know how this thing is going to turn out. I may get 10 responses,
I may get 1000, who knows.
    >
    Here's how it will work...
    >
    - All released songs (from WDADU, I&W, Awake) will be listed, along with two
sets of square brackets "[ ]" beside each one. This is where your
       answers go.
    - Each song is to be ranked from 0 (really pathetic) to 10 (godlike) under
two categories: images (the musical value) and words (the lyrics). If
there are songs that you haven't heard, or you don't want to answer (we
can't expect everyone to have opinions on each song's lyrics), leave the
space between the square brackets blank! Do not put a zero if you are not
       ranking that song's category!!
    - There are two additional questions at the bottom of the poll. These
are general answer questions (requiring actual words).
    - Album rankings will be calculated from the song rankings.
    - Please fill out the poll (I suggest capturing it, then use a text editor
on it later) by filling in the space between the square brackets, and
answering the general questions at the bottom. If you prefer, you could
just send me a list of answers. This is fine, just as long as there
is an answer for each question.
    >
NOTE: I suggest that we answer the poll relative to all Dream Theater songs.
Already, I'm thinking that I'm going to get a whole bunch of responses
with nothing but 9s and 10s :-). This is fine, and I'm not going to tell
you how to fill this thing out, but just remember that the wider your
scope of ranking is, the more accurate our poll will be! And don't worry
if you ranked some of the songs quite far apart and someone else didn't,
because all the values are relative to each other and it will all work
out just fine in the end.
    >
That's all there is to it! The actual poll itself will (hopefully) be the
next message in the digest. I will post the poll twice (once again maybe
a week from now), just to make sure everyone sees it. The polling will run
for 3 weeks (until Feb. 20/95 - I hope this is long enuff), then later on in
that week I should have the results ready!

Which one of their albums would be a good one to start off with first?

I was just catching up on my Ytsejam digests when I realized how
very irritating the long running "worst DT song" thread is
becoming. So far we've had votes for these songs (pardon me if
I incorrectly include some that haven't been mentioned, I'm doing
    this from memory):

    Afterlife
    Another Day
    Surrounded
    Under A Glass Moon
    Wait For Sleep
    Learning To Live
    6:00
    Innocence Faded
    The Silent Man
    The Mirror
    Lie
    Space Dye Vest

I'll bet that many Ytsejammers will find their _favorite_ DT
songs on this list. This should be expected. As a group
we've managed to rip on more than half of the songs from the
    last two albums.

    >6:00... now that's CHEESE...
    >
    >-The Doc

What?! To hear bad DT, you have to go all the way back to the
Majesty demos, and even those have their merits. Nuff said.

My personal favorite DT song is Under A Glass Moon.

To clarify, IMO Extreme's "weakest" effort is still an amazing piece of
work. 'Everything Under the Sun' is superb. As you said, it should appeal
to members of this list in particular.

    >I do not know Pornograffiti or their original album very well, so I guess I
    >don't know how it compares.

Personally, I missed the brash confidence, loud guitars, and abrasive humor
of their previous efforts. For those who haven't heard the albums:

The first album, 'Extreme', combines the best elements of Van Halen and
Queen. It's virtuoso pop metal at its best--if you like that sort of thing.

On 'Pornograffiti', the band shows more of its influences by adding funk
grooves and by writing in a wider range of styles. The lyrics of this concept
album were written with tongue firmly planted in cheek. 'More Than Words',
the hit single, is not even vaguely representative of the rest.

At 76 minutes, the third album, 'III Sides to Every Story', has room to be
even more diverse. It gets bogged down by its lack of focus and
constant political posturing. A redeeming feature is the 22 minute
masterpiece 'Everything Under the Sun'. It is elaborate, beautifully
    orchestrated, and unquestionably progressive.

To my ears, Nuno Bettencourt, the band's guitarist, is one of the most
technically accomplished and inventive musicians on the planet.

I seem to recall in the DT FAQ that one of the songs that DT has never

and throughout the 1000 or so times that I have listened to it I have
noticed that there are times when it sounds like there is more then
one guitar playing in it, as well as many other effects. Can anyone tell
me why DT can't (!) or won't play it live....? And if they have played
it live, what boot can it be found on? Thanks!

I like the quote of Mike Portnoy. I believe that it is on Dream Out Loud.
He says some thing like: "Can we get some more smoke up here I _can't_ see
the audience". Shouldn't he have said something like (in a sarcastic manner)
"Can we ger some more smoke up here
I _can still_ see the audience.

    Hello everyone,

Taste of music from people on this list:

I really don't think it is safe to flame any band on here because from
what I can gather from the polls held on here we are of all types. I am
one of those people going from mainstream (Van Halen, Metallica, The
Police, Rush, The Who, Zeppelin, Anthrax) into Prog Rock & Prog Metal(Fate's
Warning, Black Jester, early Genesis, Marillion, Yes, King Crimson, Black
Jester, Early Warning, Magellan, Echolyn, Mastermind). I have chatted
with many of metalhead on here and at college and a lot of the arty
prog-death has great instrumental comp. but the vocals usually turn me
off. Watchtower for instance, when I first heard this band played at my
local prog dealer I was ready to put down cash on it, then the singer
came in and the money retreated to my wallet. Cynic is close to the same
way for me, I felt that their instrumentals and computerized singing were
so good that I could tolerate the grunting vocalist. I have heard that
this is a powerful conveyance of anger, but to me a screeching guitar
    does a lot better job.

Group recommendations (the best part of this digest beyond DT discussion):

    Early Warning
    -------------

For those into the prog metal (Adler Fate's, Queensryche, not the death
stuff) I would recommend Early Warning which features a powerful vocal
style, this guy sings kinda middle so that the average joe can follow him
but he is exceptional, there also is some group harmonies which are
good. The guitarwork is really powerful and the song composition
resembles the prog metal style, my recommendation is that you can't go
wrong for the $5 or $6 that this tape cost me. If these guys ever play
near Baltimore I will be the first in line to get a ticket. I am hoping
for new stuff from them sometiime next year. Write them at:

                                                    Early Warning
                                                    1064 Atlantic Dr. Apt. 2
                                                    Atlanta, GA 30318-5336
                                                    USA

for info or e-mail Chris at gt2588c@prism.gatech.edu
                       Mark at mark@gap.gsu.edu

The tape is called The Hero's Dream check it out.

    Divine Regale
    -------------

This same group should check out Divine Regale's Horizons EP. Great
stuff in the Queensryche, Rush, Dream Theater vein. The guitar and
keyboard sounds meld together to create a full background sound similar
to something Queensryche would do. The lead singer stands out as quite
good, he has been compared to the Midnight (Crimson Glory)
and Jon Anderson (Yes) by various people I know. Mail Chris at:
    parallels@aol.com if you are interested.

    Magellan
    --------

This group has seen some serious traffic on this list and rightly so. My
best description would be Petrucci as a keyboard player and dominate
writer in DT. This group can cook, lots of time sig changes, lots of
epicf style songs in the tradition of Metropolis, Magna Carta, Estadium
Nacional are their best Epics. Their second album Impending Ascension has
been rereleased domestically and better chain stores have it (Best Buy, Tower)
, other stores should be able to order it. Hour of Restoration, the
first album is available as a German import only and is out of print in
the USA. The third album, Test (or Trial) of Wills is due out in 1995.
If you like the material Kevin did on Images and Words with DT, or if you
like Yes (I often call DT a modern version of Yes and Kansas) you should
check this out. The vocalist isn't a soprano so if Jon Anderson (Yes)
    bothers you, this album won't.

    Black Jester
    ------------

I see that a few people on here have picked up Dairy of a Blind Angel (I
am still trying to order this, three months now) and Welcome to the
Moonlight Circus. This band is heavy Symphonic Prog-Metal (new label?)
and is on the label "Music is Intelligence" which has been putting out
some quality material (Marathon is another powerful band on the label).
What strikes me most about BJ is the power of the dynamics and switching
from acoustic to electric guitar frequently. Lots of variation in the
songs but DT fans should love them. Someone posted earlier how to pick
up a copy, another high recommendation.

    Elan

    ----

A lot of people have been talking about this group, notably a band member and since he did send me a free CD I thought I would review this. The album is called Firestorm and I will be honest and say that I have only listened to this three times or so. Instrumentally it is solid, reminding me of Rush, the vocals are OK. I will give it several more listens but it just doesn't grab me like the earlier items I reviewed. I think a lot of this comes from being a band with hybrid influences, they reflect the influences and do a wonderful job, but they haven't carved out a niche and developed a powerful style of their own. I do however rate them as a promising bandand since this is a debut CD future material could be incredible based on the instrumental potential. I'm sure someone could give you his e-mail if you ask to the list.

    Inferno -------

This is Jay Peele's band which is quite heavy with a bit of Prog Metal stylings but the instrumental parts remind me of less refined DT and they also lack the keyboards. Lyrics are similar to Ray Adler Fate's. Over Psychic Distance has some interesting parts, many are instrumental, Jay's voice is adequate (sorry Jay) but not powerful. From what I hear instrumentally this band could develop into a powerhouse in the prog-metal realm since this is only their first album. Look for a Jay Peele post to ytsejam and he will have his e-mail address on there for band info. Hopefully he will have new material out soon, I will be purchasing the next disk.

    Mastermind ----------

This is a band featuring Bill Berends on guitar (acoustic, electric, and MIDI) and Rich Berends on percussion. Bill plays bass on the albums but live they have a powerful bass player holding up that end. This power trio reminds me of a combination of Emerson, Lake and Palmer (moreso on the earlier album) and Satriani. Berends is a terrific guitar player and Rich is an awesomely agile drummer. Brainstorm is my favorite album of the three (self-titled, Brainstorm, and Tragic Symphony). I haven't heard Tragic yet but it has received some great reviews. Highlights on Brainstorm include the title track (21:15) with 7 sub parts and a reoccuring main theme, it is composed similar to classical works. Bill sings on some of the tracks and his voice fits well with the music, it is moderate (tenor I guess, been several years since theory class) and slides in and out of the guitar parts. Mail Bill at bberends@pipeline.com for info or to get a copy of the CDs. The first two are released domestically and the third is due out domestically in March.

To finish up King Crimson from the 70's Red, Starless and Bible Black, and Lark's Tongues in Aspic are highly recommended. (You get those violins that were discussed in the digest over the past week).

For those who made it to the end of this post thanks for listening. All of these bands really appreciate interest in their music and appreciate any support you can give them. Many of the most pleasant conversations I've held are with members in young bands discussing music.

PS For the Early Warning guys it is better to snail them if you cannot get through on e-mail, I don't think they check their mail that often.

    Mike

    Hello,

Well since my last post was getting long I decided to break these up.

    Cover Concert:

If anyone gets good audio or video of this I will gladly shower them with tapes (small label prog, DT boots, PF boots (I have rare ones mostly early) or anything I can get give you for a copy), you in the UK are truly blessed. Howe, Dickenson, and Rothery on the same stage, it is exciting and frightening all at once.

Bahr Records 001 (Official Ytsejam Fanclub Boot):

I would like to express my thanks to Mike for going through with this project and making all of us extremely happy, hopefully the WDAJU disk will happen as well. And I would like to compliment all of the members of the digest who have made this a possibility. So few mail-list or fan club for that matter have fans that can mobilizr and get something done. We could probably get Portnoy a seat in congress if we put our minds to it. (If Sonny Bono can do it? <grin>)

Moore Does Tori 001 (Tape Tree for Kevin's demos):

I'd again like to thanks Kevin and Jen (Airdance) for making this a possibility, same as above for the list commment, I feel proud to be on this list with all of you. I can't wait til I receive my copy since SDV is still my favorite song on Awake. Moore can write song great music.

    Rush recommendations:

This is an old thread but since I have all of their material and several live shows, IMO the late 70's is the best era, and the most proggy. Cygnus X-1, Hemispheres, La Villa, Natural Science, the long songs hold some of their best and intricate music. A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves are my favorites. For those who like Presto I would consider that my favorite of the albums after Power Windows. Available Light, Red Tide, and The Pass are some of their most powerful songs. I also like the fact that this album was a totally new style for them, it showed that they could stay fresh after writing together for about 15 years at that point. I just hpe the next album can be as good as Presto, Roll the Bones didn't appeal to me, and Counterparts was really cool for a while but didn't have any staying power , I really feel no desire to listen to it even though I enjoyed the music on it. I'm still waiting for them to do an instrumental album, that would make my year.

I think that catches me up for the last 20 digests. See you all in another ten or so hopefully. (at this rate that would be in three days or so <grin>).

    Hi Yjmrs!

Could you please stop discussing DT-related bands here! Since I'm on this list, I've spend too much money on Rush, Yes and others And you nearly got me to buy the Magellan "Impending Ascension" CD (I've already listened to "Magna Charta" and I liked it... but I can't buy 3 CDs every week).

*** Ah, please ignore the previous message... ;) ***

I just wanna thank you for directing me towards all this wonderful music out there!

    Take care,

    Guenter

PS: Most of the CDs that seem to be hard to get over there in the U.S. are available here in Austria. There is a "Virgin MegaStore" in my town and it has WDADU and the Japan import of LatM and many other CDs that have been mentioned (but no bootlegs :( ).

PS #2: Yeah, the Dream Theater content: They'll be playing here on March 4th. Guess where I'll be that evening...

I`ve got a pretty wide range of musical tastes, ranging from Toto, up to Obituary and Carcass, from blues, to classic jazz. It makes no difference what your musical tastes are if you appreciate good music, then you`ll listen to it, simple as that. Jeez I even like Gaelic and Celtic music, but that doesn`t make me any less of a Dream Theater fan. It just goes to show doesn`t it, that the average Dream Theater fan is intelligent enough not to have a closed mind about music.

In my book the worst DT songs are (one from each album)

    Status Seeker, Surrounded, Innocense Faded

I'm not saying that they're all bad. IMO they have all got some great parts like the instrumental sections of IF, but it's other often small passages that ruin it all. To me, what makes IF suck is the chorus. You just don't put those aaahhhhs there. That's like lesson #1 in how to make music. That's like the rule of no parallell fifths in classical music! However I doubt that they did it just to make less-progressive-minded people like the song or them, and if they did they must be pretty lost in the way they think people in general percieve stuff. Everyone I've talked to says that that part's just cheezy. It doesn't attract even the people that like 80's glamrock like motley crue etc. I don't even think Bon Jovi would do such a thing, it's simply tasteless. However once again the rest of the song is very good, why didn't they just throw in another chorus.

My favourite songs are (one from each album)

The Killing Hand, Wait For Sleep/Learning To Live, A Mind Beside Itself

And I do think that Bombay Vindaloo is killer, if you're not a musician TRY to appreciate it anyway. Music does not have to have vocals, and some times music's a lot better without vocal, try to sing something over BV!

    Waiting for the poll!
