Jammers,

I was wondering if SDV (or at least the intro) has been transcribed for keys. Also is there an archive of DT keyboard material anywhere?

Thanks,

Wasn't the DT pay-per-view in Japan supposed to happen last week? Did it really go on? Did the earthquake cancel the show?

Please let us know what happened and post a review if it DID happen.

Thanks!

Hi Jammers!

I have an Images and Words poster and an Awake poster. I would really like to complete my collection with a WDADU poster. If anyone has one and would be interested in selling it or trading it for a bunch of boots or something, please let me know!!

BTW - if any jammers are looking for DT boots, I have a list. Mail me if interested.

Thanks!

I've been a subscriber to the 'jam for about 2 months now and this is my first post. I know that there is a guitar tab out for Awake and was wondering if there is a drum transcription out or if one will be released here in the U.S. I've heard that a book was released in Japan that included drums. Does anyone know how I can get it?

I've been playing drums on and off now for about 8 years and I think that the 5 hardest DT songs to play (on drums) are, in no particular order:

Metropolis, Part 1 Innocence Faded Scarred Learning to Live anything from WDADU (I'm listening to it right now and am in complete awe, although the drums to seem to be "all over the place")

If you don't have a DAT, I know of a cheaper way to do it.

You need a ski mask, jumpsuit, an UZI. Beat the crap out of the guards and run backstage. Shoot the soundman. Steal the soundbourd recording.

;-)

Jus kidding. Seriously, is anyone going to be recording it?

In the recent past, in a post on I&W versus Awake, I mentioned a desire to hear the Majesty stuff. Thanks to Rob W., the demos are finally in my hands today! Hey kidZ...I'm gonna be puttin' SDV on the net Soon...but right now I'm in the middle of a move...so be patient!!! The easiest way to learn this one is to sit at the piano with yer CD-player...and listen and play...it's quite simple (heck if I can play it...a Chimp can!!!), and the only hard part is trying to cature the proper mood of the song (I can make it sound extremly happy and beautiful just by changing the rhythem a little...it's fun)...so keep yer eyes open, and go try it for yourself...it's really not as hard as it sounds. Later!

First of all, I'd have to agree with 'The Doc' about 6:00! I mean, hell, my voice sure isn't perfect but the vocals on 6:00 are done in bad taste. JP's wah wah pedal annoys me on 6:00 as well. 'Scarred' is by far the best song on "Awake" IMHO of course...

FATES WARNING: If you have never heard FW, don't begin with 'Inside Out'. If this is your only option skip right to 'Monument' (a FW classic). I would suggest starting out with 'Perfect Symmetry' or 'Parallels' or if you prefer epic heavy music, start with 'No Exit'. The older albums are also awesome but they sound a little dated. 'No Exit', 'Perfect Symmetry', and 'Parallels' are timeless albums. 'Inside Out' is also great but not quite as good as the other 3 I mentioned.

I hate to say it, but when I hear someone flame FW I can't help but laugh at the ignorance. Opinions are one thing but scientific facts are another. 'Perfect Symmetry' is right up there with 'Moving Pictures' or 'Dark Side of the Moon'!!! NO shit!!!! Everyone - GO GET 'PERFECT SYMMETRY' (FATES WARNING)!!! DO IT NOW!!

Howdy again, fellow Jammers. felt a need to reply to these recent FW posts...

in Ytsejam 674 q94hg@thn.htu.se (Henrik Gustafsson) babbled:

>Today I went down to our local music store. I really had to try to get into >Fates Warning, cos they will open for DT here in Sweden. and I wanted to >check them out. The only CD they had was Inside Out -94, so I listened to >that. >But (after only one try) I wasnt impressed. I dont know but it doesnt sound

if you had read my earlier post -- 660 i believe -- along w/ Doc's FW listening guide -- thanx for the credit ;) -- you would have read that one cannot fully appreciate FW in one sitting, let alone in a record store.

>that special to me. I really had expected something less *hm I dont knom >the word, the only word that comes into my mind is the Forbidden one, but >OK here it is -MAINSTREAM- OK so there I said it, go flame me, just do it*

are you a musician? obviously u failed to *listen* to the music...once again another example of ppl only *hearing*. i'm not going to flame you bcuz you think it sounds MAINSTREAM, bcuz -- hold your breath -- it DOES sound mainstream but only if one does NOT *listen* to it. that is part of the magic of FW. to the casual hearer -- which i believe Mr. Gustafsson is/was, at least in this case -- is does not sound progressive, off-time, etc. try sitting down w/ Inside Out and playing the drums to it or counting to it. better yet, try playing the drums or counting to anything off Perfect Symmetry or Parallels. betcha can't do it in one try. it takes time. some ppl may not like FW BECAUSE they have to actively *listen*; this is too complicated or envolving or they dont want to give the time that it takes to appreciate the music and songs. that's fine. like i said in my other post, FW is not for everyone.

>Though I can see that some people really can get into it and love them.

well, ok. good. a glimmer of hope.

>They are not bad, not bad at all, just that they arent any special, at >least not to me, at least not yet. ^^^^^^^ another glimmer

>To me it sounded like Queensry:che, and >not like their best performances either.

QR. hmmm...a little maybe. QR's more metal -- Promised Land is closer to FW than anything else QR's done; still more straight-beat metal tho -- IMO.

>Maybe I should try another album, and perhaps at home instead of in the >recordstore.

hey! now there's an idea!

>I dont remember who said something about their lyrics, but I think they >were quite medioker. Not that I can make better myself, but I know other ( >DT, Fish, Queensry:che.....) that can.

again, you are missing the point. FW's lyrics are very emotional and envolving. maybe you failed to open your mind enough to let them take effect? but, how could you? you only listened in a record store.

onto the next ignorant-of-FW-sole....

in the same issue, Chuck, "UG REIS CHARLES R" <REISCHAR@ucs.isu.edu>, spouted:

>I have to agree with Rob, I think FW sux.

and i'm sure they think you suck as well.

> I gave them a chance. I listened to them for about a half an >hour. And I'll I got was a head from listening to the singer dip and

about half an hour? you call that a chance?

BH: huh huh, he got, like head, from listening to music. B: yeah yeah! that'd be cool

(sorry. cudnt resist :)

>raise his voice trying to find his key. It was horrible. Made me >nauseous, so I popped in DT and the sounds of James' soothing voices >cured my malady.

which CD? granted, Ray Alder is better than John Arch, IMO, they both have trouble singing to such complicated music. hell, Charles Dominicci as well as James LaBrie have trouble singing to DT's music. i'm definately NOT a vocalist. how they can sing to the odd times and changes, counter melodies, etc is beyond me. i cant do it. i can write and play it but i cant sing over it.

soothing? James' voice was soothing? which CD were u listening to? on I&W he's having trouble singing bcuz the melodies are not in his "prefered" range. on Awake James got to sing where he wanted too, lower, more raspy. i dont call either soothing. i call Goeff Tate soothing.

>P.S. Thank God I didn't waste money buying the damned thing...

yeah. i'd be a pity, had you bought it, that you might learn something and perhaps expand your limited outlook...

sorry for the length guys n gals. but oviously i feel strongly about FW and dislike closeminded ppl in general who listen to anything once and say, "nope. this sux." i'd like to be able to say that these ppl are simply unable, physically and mentally, to appreciate FW or anything else in life; that these ppl dont want to/cant think about the music with an open mind; that they do not want to possibly give something of themselves in order to receive something back. of course this doesnt only cover music but life as well...and now i've gone too far into philosophy and shall cut it off here so as to spare the closeminded the pain of the truth. email me if you'd like to hear more of my ramblings :)

You are right, The Lamb is quite possibly the best progressive rock album ever, IMO. It is so many things: mature, surreal, powerful, sometimes silly, always original and creative.

>Uh, sure I have. I've never heard Tony Banks approach Kevin Moore as >far as soloing is concerned. He writes (er, wrote) fantastic melodies, >though. And his solos are nothing to laugh at, but I wouldn't characterize >any of them as especially "real" compared with everything else I've ever heard.

While Moore may have better chops I think Banks is a better composer, and his keyboard work more original. I've read interviews where Banks considers himself a composer before being a performer. His work on the early Genesis albums is incredibly magical and innovative. And his sense of harmony is fantastic! I tried to figure out the chords to the In the Cage solo and it's no easy task. Actually the solo to Under a Glass Moon is easier to play than In the Cage, if you include the background chords. I'd say Bank's solo approach is more compositional and Moore's more improvisational.

If you like Lamb try Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme, Selling England, Wind and Wuthering, Trespass, and Trick of the Tail.

I do want to mention just one thing for the recent postings about people who don't like Fates... First and MOST IMPORTANTLY, give them more than one listen. The 1st time I heard Parallels, I really liked it... so I could not wait for Inside Out to be released... I searched the entire damn city of Pittsburgh to find the CD, and once I finally did, I put it in my car discman on the way home, and thought "what the hell kind of shit is this" Well, after listening to it some more (about 5-10 more times) I was able to become more familiar with it and its subtleties... Inside Out is now one of my favorite CDs, next to I&W and Awake... (listening to it right now, in fact). Remember the 1st time you heard I&W??? I remember thinking to myself, why did I buy this CD... my friends must have been crazy for recommending it... Needless to say, once I gave it some more listens, I loved it... Just wanted to say that before bpeople go blowing Fates off after only one listen.

Hiya guys 'n gals...more news and views from the UK...

I just can't believe it...I wake up this morning ready to go to the concert of my life, and I have a zit right in the middle of my forehead. Arrrgh! I can picture it now...I'll be chatting away with Steve Howe about how amazing his early stuff with Yes was, and he'll say

"Ermm...isn't that a big spot on your face? Doesn't that make you a spotty teenage geek with no lasting interest in good music?"

My life may well end tonight, folks, but if it don't, I'll be sure to write in with a blindin' review.

And no, I'm not going to record it ;) Sorry!

Later,

Matt.

Actually, this is getting to be a problem for me... I can't exactly afford the space to hold the digests that have all these reviews! ;) I was wondering, has anyone collected a list of these bands that have been mentioned and categorized them somewhat as to what kind of music they do?

DT requires open mindedness, people who say

I love Surrounded, I love Another Day, I even like Silent Man (in context). Heaviness has nothing to do with it. Innocence Faded doesn't do much for me.

Well, if I had to pick, I'd keep the keyboards and get rid of the guitar :) light to dark, dark to light...but some songs are not as excellent as others.

That's right. And I wouldn't be on this list, either.

Of course, the operative word here is "i". Other open-minded opinions may differ.

> > its the same closed mindedness and unwillingness to listen that keeps > people from getting into fates.

Is it not possible to dislike a song and still be open-minded? Hell- I like a good pop song, but Innocence Faded doesn't even work as a pop song the way Another Day does.

Differences of opinion do not suggest a closed mind.

I was wondering how long we were going wait for your reply. A simple apology and an acknowledgement would be quite sufficient to forgive your shovinistic remark. Do you think that females on this list gave you such a rough treatment for it? Oh puhleeeze... how long have you been on the internet? What did you expect when you ignore one whole gender of ytsejammers?

And here is another one (written by HEADSTRONG <SL98MJ85@acs.wooster.edu>):

I'm sorry but it DOES offend some, me for one. What are you trying to say? "Dream Theater does not get the women"??? Thanks, so much for my femininity!

I can't believe that females on this list have to deal with all that sexist crap. I'm sick and tired of being treated as some sort of curiosity when I say I'm a big Queensryche or Dream Theater or Rush or Fates Warning fan. Could we please stop categorizing music on gender basis in this forum? This is really getting annoying. I know you didn't mean to be offensive but try to be a little more sensitive about the feelings of other readers.

Thank you for your consideration, Kinga
