Been lurking on the jam for several months now and finally

Ya know, I don't know WHY, but, I get the feeling people missed this
(considering that someone asked when ACoS was going to be out). Here is

DREAM THEATER GIVING CULT CLASSIC OFFICIAL RELEASE:
While they work on new music for a '96 release, Dream Theater will release a
live album containing their 22 minute opus "A Change Of Seasons." They've
only performed it twice in concert*, once in New York and once in Germany,
and some bootlegs have been made.
But now, as an official release, it will serve as the title cut of the live
album which was recorded at a club in London last January, and features cover
versions of songs by some of their idols -

Elton John
Queen
Yes
Genesis
"A Change of Seasons" is due in stores in September.

I guess this kinda finalizes what's gonna be on it - no more need for
speculation. FMQB is a very well-respected radio trade magazine. I'll have to

Someone was asking about Waiting For The Punchline by Extreme...and what "we"
thought of it.
Well, don't pick it up expecting another "3 Sides," and forget about another
"Pornograffitti" or "Extreme."
WFTP shows a much rawer side of the band than any other album. There's no
real "high gloss" production going on. It's all packed tightly together, and
right up in your face. And it's great.
Anyone who thought that Nuno was carrying the band by himself, think again.
Pat's pulling his own weight on the bass. It's solid as granite...it has to
be; there's very little rythym guitar overdubbing here. And Nuno's still in
top form.
Get it. Period.

Hey guys 'n' gals! Here's my $.02 on some stuff.
1. Yes, MP's drum solos aren't all that *musical* but in the immortal
words or Rick Steele, "Let's get ready to rummmmble!!" Portnoy's solos
are kind of like a stampede of water buffalo -- amplified! And I like that!
2. No, the boys have never played Scarred live, and every time I listen
to the song, that very fact really pisses me off 'cause it's one of my
favorite. Maybe Providence will be the World Premiere? :)
3. Moshing. Not to DT. Some other dime-a-dozen-band? Sure.
4. Age? I'm 19.
5. James LaBrie only messed up that syncopated line in OaMoT once, Buck!
6. Ooops. When I posted that info about the DT radio world premiere, I
meant Friday, July 28th!! I don;t know how the heck I put the 18th.
Sorry. (Thanks for the correction, Steve Z.) Too late. :(

1. Anybody like Morbid Angel or Grip, Inc.?
2. Does anyone ever actually read Mike Bahr's incredibly long posts
about every little detail in his ordereing procedures?
Ex: "Write a check. But make sure the check is yellow, because

ink tends to smudge. And put it in an envelope no larger than 2.5x4.5".
And only use those cute flower stamps. And write your return address on

Hey all you Dreamers!
I called my local radio station today and found out something
very disturbing! I requested them to play DREAM THEATER...and the DJ
was very honest with me and told me she is not sure they even have Dream
Theater in the studio(station). They did at one time..and played DT
quite a bit...but since "national statistics"(etc..etc..)(and marketing)
Dream Theater is not in demand as many other "new" bands or
records..etc.. They might play late night when the DJ has more
"freedom", but never hear them play during the day. What a shame...it
all comes down to TARGET MARKETING...music on demand. It ALL comes
(pretty much) down to the RECORD COMPANY...(who promotes what)..who
wants what heard? Who has the most money? I know some of this HAS to
happen...but ..geeze..why not once in a while play something different.
Throw something in every once in a while. Who do we call? Radio
Stations? MTV?? Record Companies??? Im sure when DT comes out with the
new album it will be played (hopfully//of course..the choosen TRACK from
the Record Company)..but it will just happen again and again. (SIGH)..
It's NOT just Dream Theater...its many other bands. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I just read that post and thought the same thing. Then I realised that I

What someone posted is that it's transcribed in 12/8:

This is the easiest way to do it. I'll bet that JP just thought of it that
way. Notice that Portnoy doesn't play except on the downbeats? No hi-hat in
between or anything. When I first figured it out, I thought it was 3/4
against 4/4. If you were to write it in 4/4, that's what you'd get. That
isn't as easy as the 12/8 thing.

It was great to see that someone else had been thinking about the intro to TTT. It is a great example of polyrhythms (yes, that topic again:).), and I recently included it as part of my Masters Thesis. In the intro, the kick drum is the only thing that retains the opening quarter-note pulse. The bass, guitar and snare drum all eventually begin playing a pattern with a dotted-eighth-note pulse. All the while, the kick drum is beating out quarter notes over (or is it under) this. The overall time signature then changes from duple meters (4/4, 5/4, 6/4 which the kick drum still represents) to 6/16 (a triple meter and which everybody else is in). This makes sense when the big 12/8 comes in (also a triple meter). See the transcription in Guitar for the Practicing Musician. The last measure before the 12/8 is the clue. It's in 3/16, which is merely an easy sub-division of 6/16. This 3/16-ish pulse has been going on with the guitar, bass, and snare. Anyway, post much appreciated. :)

I have the Awake transcription book! The time signatures in the intro to "The Mirror" are as follows (of course this is the transcribers' interpretation [Dale Turner and Jessie Gress] and it could differ from the way other people feel the song [although it says on the front cover: "EDITTED BY JOHN PETRUCCI"]):
1 measure of 4/4 1 measure of 3/4 4 measures of 12/8 7 measures of 4/4 1 measure of 2/4 1 measure of 9/16 and then the rest is in 4/4 until the vocals come in (that part is in 12/8).
I think the changes to 2/4 and then to 9/16 are unnecessary because even though the music takes a different approach, the guitar (and this is only a GUITAR transcription) plays the exact same thing (creating quite a POLYRYTHYM in the process!). Once and for all The Mirror intro is polyrhymical. It is the culmanation of 3/16 and 3/4 time. The drums are in 3/16 and the guitar and bass are in 3/4. You don't have to have the conflicting times in the same instrument. By having the 3/16 time transposed on top of the 3/4 it becomes polyrhymical.

New Trivia Questions:
--What prog concept album has the title/artist in Morse code on the cover of the album, and in the beginning and ending bits of the CD? ; clue, this artist is a former member of a well-known Prog band, which use a similar technique at the beginning/end of one their well-known albums.
--What well known three word phrase from the Who's Quadraphenia is lyrically and musically quoted by Fish on Marillion's 'Misplaced Childhood'? clue, the quote is NOT on lyrics insert. What is the origin of 'Marillion's' band name?
--For those that keep asking "What does this have to do with DT?" Simply, I was inspired by the mention of rock trivia at the DT convention. It seems that many of you Y'Jammers like to answer my trivia questions. And even I learn something from my own questions.
--Related: Is the JAM supposed be only about DT or about/and for Y'Jammers? All Y'Jammers are DT fans, but not all DT fans are Y'Jammers.
--Is Metallica progressive? IMO, the music I have heard has a progressive influence; granted I'm not a Metallikind, and have not heard all their stuff. A thought, since Kirk Hammett studied with Satch, this might be a progessive influence? Or maybe you dont't think Satch is progessive either.
--Another thought on Lyrics_vs_Music: I mentioned Satch's 'Surfing with the Alien' in my last post; his 'Flying in a Blue Dream' is certainly, IMHO, an album with excellent music and cheesy lyrics.
--On lyric interpretation: briefly, one school of thought says we cannot interpret from the composer's point of view because we 'can't ever get into the composer's head' and totally understand his intentions; another school of thought says we must interpret from the composer's view because 'we share a commonality in thought' with others, therefore we can understand a composition from the composer's point of view. If you're interested in some heavy philosophical reading Email me for references.
--On poetry and lyrics: my friend and fellow Y'Jammer Dale Newbury mentioned the influence of IM and 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by Samuel Coleridge Taylor. It is interesting that he also wrote "Kubla Khan', which is the source of lyrics for Rush' 'Xanadu'; which I found in a rather strange thread. While I was sure that Xanadu was probaly derived from some poem, I didn't know which or who until I read Douglass Adam's (Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe author) 'Dirk Gently...' (or was it 'Dark Teatime of the Soul), in which the poem was being read by a character. Further when I looked up the author/poem, the poem just prior to 'Kubla Khan' in the NAL collection of Coleridge's poetry was 'Christabel', a poem (author not mentioned) that I'd heard earlier in the TV movie 'Sweet Hostage' (movie better than its name implies) which starred Linda Blair (the Exorcist--> Tubular Bells-->Mike Oldfield-->progresive artist).

Regarding this whole polyrhythm discussion: I think a whole bunch of you are missing it entirely. The word polyrhythm means "many rhythms" being played simultaneously. Talk of playing triplets on one hand and straight eighths on the other is a mixing of *meters*, namely triple and duple, not rhythms, really. The way I've always thought about polyrhythms is in terms of accents. As one person is playing some riff in 4/4, another person (say the drummer) can play in 7/16, 3/8, 5/16, etc., but keeping the underlying sixteenth note at the same tempo. Say the guitarist is playing some quarter-note groove in 5/4 and the drummer wants to play a 5/16 polyrhythm over it to add some "flavor." Here's how it could look:
G: 1 2 3 4 5 D: x x x x 16ths: ********************
The drummer could use all kinds of phrasings, whether it be playing the regular 5/4 beat and just doing the polyrhythm with his feet, or totally ONLY playing at the x's (which would sound kind of like a slightly slower tempo of 4/4 if it were played separately).
This is kinda the way I've always percieved polyrhythms (that's also what a very educated percussion major friend of mine told me. :). If it's wrong, hey, just my $.02.
Also, please everyone insisting that the intro to the Mirror is in ten different time signatures and five different meters and four different tempos and three time zones (??) -- PLEASE STOP!! Some times it's in 4/4. Other times it's in 3/4. (there is that one measure 17/16 . . .) That's it, people!! If you don't believe me, read my entire post again, listen to the song again, and then see what you think! :) I'm not gonna go doing that damn little diagram crap anymore (I can't believe I did it above -- ooooohh). Just sort it out!
Also, yes those tab books suck. They're totally wrong all over the place. Don't waste your money on it. Just listen to stuff at half speed if need be.

I posted on this once this spring, as some of you may remember. Joe Morello was a great drummer from the 50's big band era. One of his most impressive licks was to play triplets with his left hand at 200 speed (thats no typo) on the snare and play other rythms with his right hand. Another monster polyrythm is in the end of the guitar solo of Cryin' in the Rain/Whitesnake. The double bass plays sextuplets (sp?), the right hand plays triplets on the ride, and the left hand plays eighth notes on the snare. Splewee! And I'll say it again, MP and DT are definitely masters of this technique.
