        I suppose that many of us already know this but, the song "Bombay
Vindaloo", from LIVE AT THE MARQUEE, is also on a compilation album,
GUITAR'S PRACTICING MUSICIANS V. III. It's the exact same version but, for
the collecter that needs EVERYTHING, it's a must have.
        Another question, anyone know if DT is coming back to the midwest,
Omaha to be specific? I know they came though here on I&W. I was working
for Musicland at the time and couldn't go coz EVERYBODY else was going and
they needed some unlucky fool to work....
        I really wish I could even come close to the things JP can do with
his guitar. Oh well...

        I wish I could have come, to be there for this! :) I could have
followedit up with a rousing acoustic version of Erotomania, or heck,
guitar-master Brian Cox could have given us Metropolis, but the Silent
Man is where it's at for group singing. :)

        YES!!!!!! Then we could have the Phoenix YTSECON! :) That would
kick ass. So many Jammers have moved out here lately, it would top it off
beautifully for Mike and Derek to be here... they'd love the weather.

        Tell 'em they'll love it here and let's get our favourite band
out of The Crime State. :)

        I tried it once... I can't even approach it on bass...

        And finally, to business.

        Certain video and audio recordings that did not come from the
Ytsecon and have nothing to do with sources near the band have come into
my possession. :)

        (I'm hearing people groan audibly as they read this... "of all
the people to get these, and it had to be HIM!?!? he wasn't even THERE!")

        I'm gonna do a Jenn-style Tape Tree with these fairly soon. Each
fo the two videotapes will be copied to the first 20 or so of you who
actually have two hifi stereo VCRs. Then distribution can begin... and
none of it for more than the price of a blank tape, mailer, and stamp. It
was the wish of our source for this material that it be distributed
widely and fairly. :)

        One of the videos contains all sorts of treats from the Images
album and tour, including the three videos plus a bunch of live treats,
plus a video for Afterlife (performance type video), interviews galore, etc.

        The other contains Awake stuff. The three videos (Lie, The Silent
Man, and The Silent Man alternate live version). Plus it contains clips
of the Foundations show with Rudess playing keys. Plus a TON of covers
gig songs! Includin Winter and Achilles Last Stand! Then, it gets better,
live clips of some songs from Awake, and then the Headbangers Ball that
Mike hosted, with TSM video, and other prog videos (Fates Warning,
Galactic Cowboys, etc).

        I'll begin the tape tree project when Cygnus is suitably
underway, as I can only do so much at once. :)

        Finally, we were given an audiotape that can ONLY be expressed
int he form of a CD. I want a vote as to whether to do it this fall
BEFORE WDAJU, or wait till after. It's Dream Theater UNPLUGGED! And it's
crystal clear. Plus it has some tracks from when they were on the Bruce
Dickinson show. The track list is:

        Caught in a Web
        Lifting Shadows off a Dream
        Lie
        Perfect Strangers (BD on vocals)
        Lifting Shadows off a Dream
        Wait For Sleep (GUITAR used instead of Piano... INCREDIBLE!!)
        The Silent Man
        The Lie Acoustic Boogie (you guys have to hear this)
        Tears (so beautifully perfect your head will explode)

        So what do you think all? DT unplugged as the next CD? And the
tape trees for the videos shall begin in earnest in a little while,
possibly mid-august when the school people return.

from 87 and the last CD has (you guessed it) demos from 86 (with Chris Collins
on vocals) Of course, those are the most important to me, some others may
disagree, but the live discs (all the 2CD sets) all contain the entire show
and are FM broadcast or SB (except AKiaD)

   Thanx for responding about TOWHTSTS! It sucks that Derek didnt know it,
but what are ya gonna do?? Kai, I hope you are wrong about them never playing
it again, I would love to see them play it but, I guess well have to wait n
see (maybe they could rework it a bit if they didnt enjoy playing it).

   Okay, Im finally up to the question of the day: in I&W #6 (the fanzine),
there is Mikes diary from their European tour (this year). In it, he says
that on Feb 7th (in Leipzeg Germany), they included an excerpt of Diary of a
Madman (Ozzy) in Dereks solo. First off, was this in the solo during TTT or
the solo/intro to Mirror?? Did they continue to keep it in the set for more
than one show or maybe add different excerpts other nights? And on a related
note, when listening to Wake Up, it almost (note I said ALMOST) sounds like
Derek is playing the keyboard line from UFOs Love to Love during the jam in
TTT - anyone agree?? Just curious (no flames neccessary)

I must have missed your post Aviad. Doesn't matter because I'm not
attempting a transcription. I'm not very good at tapping. Anyway, I thought
it was all a two handed tap thing a la Sheehan. Do you think he's picking
the first three four notes then hammering that 15th fret in the right then
picking again? I don't read Tab too well. I'd love to know how you play it
though.

If anyone from Dream Theater reads this list: WE WANT THE BASS
TRANSCRIPTIONS. How about all the bass players on the list do an email (or
snail mail) petition. What's up with this? Who cares about the guitar
parts. Take out the bass and what've you got?

from Jan/Feb 1994 BASS Player "Dream Theater's John Myung: Prog is Back"
(p.8-9):

        Popular music seems to go in cycles, constantly reviving itself. Seventies
rock is as strong as ever in 1994, and even Black Sabbath lurks just beneath
the flannel and Doc Martens of grunge. One wonders when the most guilty
musical pleasure of the '70s progressive rock will be exhumed.
        Dream Theater is doing its part. The band's lofty, poetic lyrics are
supported by art rock pieces that frequently stretch from 8 to 12 minutes in
length, not unlike the early works of Rush, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant,
Considering that Dream Theater is just shy of gold-record status in the U.S.
(and doing equally well worldwide), it would seem a full-scale prog revival
is possible. "We're just doing our thing," claims John Myung, "not
following any musical trends or anything. And we're just trying to do it the
best we can."
        Myung's humility may stem from the difficulties his band has endured. He
met drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci while the three were
attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. After drafting keyboardist
Kevin Moore, the guys started jamming and soon found there weren't enough
hours in the day for both rehearsal and school. John adds, "We realized the
band was more valuable to us than the Berklee curriculum, so we decided to
stay home and pursue our music full-time."
        Home for all of the band members happened to be Long Island, New York, so
the four returned and recruited vocalist Charlie Dominici. Through a
friend, their tape made it to Mechanic Records head Steve Sinclair, who
loved the group. Mechanic, which was distributed by MCA, released DT's
debut, When Dream and Day Unite. Unfortunately, that's about all they did.
"The enthusiasm at Mechanic was there, but MCA was never supportive of us.
We had no video, no tour, no nothing. Things turned kind of sour when that
happened." The band parted ways with both the label and Dominici.
Undaunted, and considering the possibility of carrying on as an
all-instrumental band, Dream Theater continued writing and recording in
their rehearsal studio.
        Derek Oliver, an A&R man at Arco Records and a huge DT fan, secured the
group a deal on the strength of their vocal-less 4-track tape. Oliver's
boss, Derek Shulman, had signed Bon Jovi and Cinderella to Mercury - but
back in the '70s, he was the lead vocalist of Gentle Giant. "Shulman was
really enthusiastic about us," remembers John. "He told us, 'Don't change a
thing - we're signing you because we love what you do.' That's the best
thing you could ever hear from the president of a record company!"
        While the new deal went down smoothly, finding a suitable vocalist didn't.
Over a period of a year and-a-half, 200 tapes were reviewed and several
dozen singers were auditioned. "We had found a guy and thought it was going
to work out. At the last minute, just before we committed, a tape came in
that blew our minds. The singer was James LaBrie." With everything finally
in place, the new Dream Theater recorded Images and Words, its current
success. A full year of touring followed, as Myung and his fellow Dreamers
watched their career grow on the road. "At the beginning we were playing
5OO-seater dives and sleeping in Motel 6's. Now we're playing 2,000-seat
clubs and carrying our own lights and PA."
        It seems as if the band's recorded sound, lush and polished to the extreme,
would be difficult to replicate live. "It is, but we've worked hard on it
with our soundman. I'm using all-MESA/Boogie amps and speakers, and I'm also
using bass pedals. My bass parts sound huge." John's TriAxis guitar preamp
(modified for bass) has presets that dial up countless tone variations, as
if he had a dozen different amps. It feeds two Strategy 500 power amps and
one Bass 400+ power amp. One Strategy drives two 8x10s, the other powers two
Powerhouse cabinets (each containing four 10s and a 15), and the 400+ drives
another Powerhouse. John's pedal system is a Roland PK5 MIDI Bass
Controller, run directly into the PA.
        Following the completion of Images and Words, on which Myung used a Spector
NS-2 4-string, he made the switch to a Tobias Basic 6. As with every other
hurdle he's encountered, he shrugged off the potential difficulty with the
transition and just went for it. "The 6-string can be difficult, but it was
kind of easy for me. I didn't think the extra strings were confusing - they
were just there c to make my bass parts sound bigger. For instance, I cold
double everything I played on the A string an octave lower." Was the neck
width a problem ? "Actually, I think it makes the bass easier to play,
because you shift your hand up and down the neck less than you do on a
4-string. The playing is more positional." He uses D'Addario strings, gauges
.030-.130.
        Given his proclivity for the low end, it may come as a surprise that Myung
studied violin from age 5 to 16, encouraged by his mom. "A friend down the
street had a band," John remembers, "and he said I should play bass. He said
it had four strings like a violin, so I'd pick it up right away. I fell in
love with the bass." His initial inspirations were Iron Maiden's Steve
Harris, Rush's Geddy Lee, and Yes man Chris Squire. Myung still loves those
players, although he now feels "Tony Levin is the king."
        Strictly a fingerstyle player, John has developed some cool moves of his
own. Check out the breakdown about 5:30 into "Metropolis Part I" on I ages:
Myung does a ridiculously quick yet accurate three-finger tapping figure
that sounds like a sequencer, forming a 16th-note pattern that ends with
32nd-notes on the upbeat of four. Myung also often doubles Portnoy's
complex double-kick patterns. "I deal with staff like that on my own time.
if I have a tape of it, I'll just work with the tape. If I can't play it,
I'll go home and practice it until I can."
        All right, you - stop reading and go practice!

Q: I've read that John Myung, Dream Theater's bassist, uses a MESA/Boogie
Triaxis guitar preamp modified for bass. What are those modifications?

A: According to MESA/Boogie, Myung's Triaxis - a one-rackspace,
MIDI-programmable preamp with clean and distortion patches - received a
series of capacitor and resistor value changes to enhance the EQ section and
bottom-end responce (About 20 components were swapped). Aside from that, the
preamp's signal flow and gain levels are stock. For more on John Myung, see
Jan/Feb '94.

well, do you have _all_ the songs from WDADU that James sings on?
personally, i think you should wait until you do...it's not the same
without one of the songs.
so i vote for UNPLUGGED first, then WDAJU when you get _all_ the songs.

Hey - somewhat DT related thing here:

Dave Neff came out & saw my band tonight at this dinky shithole bar!

Besides embarrassing the shit out of myself by continually calling him
John (for which he didn't correct me until he was leaving...hehe...), we
had short chats. My current band, girlfriend, and former bandmates were
also in attendance, so...I was busy!

Anyway, apparently Veruca Salt's road manager was there, and was chatting
with our drummer for a while. (Ask Dave what he thinks of our drummer...)

So, Dave, I'd like to publically thank you for coming out, and apologize
for being a space cadet. =)

(For anyone else in the Philly/South Jersey/North Delaware area, we'll be

    This virgin post now open for flames! After attending Ytsecon I felt it
was time to come out of the lurkers closet. Let me begin with my Dream
Theater history:
    Dateline 1989. News flash MTV... if you like Queensryche you should check
out Crimson Glory, Heir Apparent and DREAM THEATER! It took me six months
to find WDaDU even though it had just been released. It stayed in my cd
changer untill well after I&W came out. After Charlie and before James I
spent alot of time begging the gods to bless them with the perfect singer,
and after mucho effort I see my prayers did not go unanswered. :) Durring
this gray period, as I like to call it, I was to meet the guys several times
(Ct is pretty close to Long Island ya know). At the CMJ conventions in ' 90
& ' 91 and various shows around the tri-state area. I don't think I was ever
at a Fates Warning show that I didn't run into at least Mike and he always
remembers me as Jim from the Jim & Bill show on WNHU in west haven, Ct. 88.7
on your FM dial. One of the highlights of this time was actually getting to
see them do an instrumental show on Long Island including aCoS. We took one
of their roadies out for drinks and ended up with 3 new songs six months or
so before I & W came out. Then finally came the show at the Safari club in
Norwalk Ct. with Meanstreak (of which Rena and Marlene were both members).
 It was great because I had an advance copy of I & W 2 months before it's
official release and sang every word right along with James and all my
friends there were pissed because they bhadn't heard it yet. I have been to
at least ten more of DT's shows since then.
Ytsecon--- First off my name is James Colberg and I was wearing a black Salem
Mass. T-shirt with a Witch and a big Pentagram (anti-Satanic ya know right
side up) on it. Babs I haven't forgotten about your foot massage! :) Bad
traffic at least ten stops for bad directions from locals = 2.5 hrs. late.
 :( The band had gotten there ten minutes earlier that and kind words from
Babs made me feel much better. The laminates RULE especially after they are
signed by the band! :) I won the first poster, it was from a show they did
in Belgium, also signed by the band. We heard all or most of the Ronnie
Scotts cover show (INCREDIBLE) and had the honor of being the only people
outside of the band to hear the studio version of aCoS. The new intro rules,
some parts are slower some parts are heavier, some new lyrics added. As a
whole I love it, mind you it IS very different but we now have this in
addition to the two previous versions to enjoy now. I do believe Derric had
the right idea in turning the volume down durring what I believe were
vulgarities? They don't seem to have any place in this particular song. It
seems that a certain petition? sent to the record co. was largly responsible
for the recording of this song. :) :) :) Alot of people left (including
the band) before our wonderful rendition of The Silent Man. I was one of the
people singing who were the rest involved?

Subcon---- No need for a play by play I only have one question. When do we
see Subcon II?

Hi ytse jammers, just thought I'd post a few thoughts on the con
and digest 843. My thoughts are towards Greg Chew and
Charles Jeffreys.......not flames, just thoughts. They both posted
in 843 that without the illustrious Jeff Chew, there would have
been no convention. Big hand to Jeff I say........I thought that I
thanked you on the tags......remember...Thanks Jeff Chew and
his Rolodex. Without Jeff there would have been a convention,
just not the running around trying to silence the radio station in
the area. Actually guys, I do thank Jeff for the number, he knows
what I mean but, I think that we owe Babs a great deal of thanks
for everything.......did you guys say that in your post??? I don't
think so. I personally would like to thank Babs, all the ytse
jammers who attended, Dream Theater, Round Table, and
Amanda Dorsey who was very instrumental in helping me
produce all the tags and banners that were at the convention.
Oh well, semi long post........

  Anyway, sorry guys, no flames intended, I just think that you
owe Babs a load of thanks..........

I got in a bookstore last night a British magazine called "Guitar Technique."
It had a cover story on noe other than...John Petrucci! Nothing new, though.
<the date on the mag was 4/95> It was interesting to see his amp rack,
which I'd never seen before. Also interesting to see the changes in his f/x
rack. He no longer uses the Korg strobe tuner--he now uses a little Boss
tuner installed into his pedalboard. Also included is a complete, however
bad, transcription of Under a Glass Moon. It came w/ a CD w/ some git going
over the soloing techniques in the song. Kinda cool.

Overall it was great. Good meeting fellow YtseJammers and of course
Mike P., John M. and Derek S. Big hand to Babs for grace under
pressure, and duty above and beyond, etc.

HOWEVER, an event transpired that I just can't let sit. No names will
be mentioned here, but you know who you are, and I have a feeling many
of you know who it was as well. And if that's actually true, I think
that makes quite an interesting statement in and of itself.

I thought it was really wonderful that DT respected us enough as
*fans* and *adults* to give us a chance to hear the new studio version
of A Change of Seasons. This was someting quite special; when you
share a new piece of music with someone, you are sharing part of your
SELF with them. They didn't have to do it; they wanted to out of the
goodness of their hearts.

Then someone decided to destroy this special moment by using a
hand-held tape recorder to steal this moment for themselves.

Let me ask you something. Did you even THINK to ask any of the DT
guys if this would be ok with them? Why not? You obviously KNEW what
you were doing was incredibly sleazy and wrong because you were hiding
your tape recorder like the little thief you are. Why did you feel
the need to do this? Are you so pathetic that you need to do
something like this to make you feel better or more privileged than
others who will of course come begging you for copies? This is NOT
the same as taping a show to trade, and you damn well know it.

It's things like this that make me feel ashamed to be a music fan.
That there are those who forget what it means to be a human being, and
let nothing get in their way of doing whatever it takes to make them
feel like they are "cooler" than other fans. How dare you consider
yourself a true fan; using them to boost your own self-esteem. I hope
someday you'll grow up and realize what a shitty thing you did.

My SUBCONSCIOUS arrived yesterday!!!

I must say it was worth waiting for!!
Since I have never seen the boys live :( all of the tracks on SubCon are
new to me. Eve and To Live Forever are my favorites so far. Wanted Dead or
Alive is _so_ funny. ACOS, I haven't had the time to sit back and take it
all in yet.

This really is highlight #1 early summer '95 for me. Let's once again
stand up and take a bow for Mike Bahr. ___

Hello, my name is Ted Knickerbocker, I am new to this, I just signed on
yesterday. I decided to sign on after I went to ytsecon with my friend(I got
the last poster, whew!!). I figured this was to good to pass up. I have no
musical talent, I just love listening to DT.
      About the obsenity in ACOS, I figure since Dereck turned the tape
player down and the guys said the song wasn't done, they may delete it or
replace it with something more appropriate. I don't know though, that is
just a thought. I really don't think that one second out of 24 minutes is
going to kill me.
      Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and I'm sure I will enjoy
