I will be heading over to Ann Arbor for eight weeks in the summer
(from San Francisco), and nothing would kick ass more than catching
a concert, or a couple of concerts that go by Ann Arbor. If anybody
catches word or anything. . .

Also, I've been wondering. On Live in Tokyo, I noticed that Kevin
Moore had something scribbled on the stand for his keyboard. Any
one else notice? Any one know what it means?

Wait for Sleep is probably not to hard for anyone whose been playing
keyboards for a while, but it would be almost impossible to figure
out what every line and harmony is. So unless Kevin Moore has taught
anyone to play it, Derek my not know how. I'm sure that Petrucci only
played the melody with a simpler harmony. Any comments?

Oh man. Did I say that I wouldn't say anything about this? Someone has the
music book and said that it's notated in 12/8. It's common to play 4/4 with
a triplet or 12/8 feel. If you flip it and play 12/8 with a 4/4 feel,
that's The Mirror. Notice that the drums hit _only_ every beat, i.e.
nothing in between the bass and snare. But JP plays 3 notes on the first
beat. That's the triplet. It looks like this:

    12 xxx-xxx-xxx-
     8 B S B S

See how the drums hit every 3 eigth notes and where the guitar is playing
them? This is the most logical way to notate it even if it is hard to
    count.

I think most listeners of Dream Theater aren't looking for another heavy
metal band. Dream Theater is special, in a sacred sort of way. From what
I have seen, they tend to like Dream Theater's classic-style lyrics (which
draw heavily on allusions to mythology and history) and complex playing
style (lots of little interplays to listen to that you don't always hear
the second or third or fourth time through; classical music shares this
    feature).

Images and Words really did these things well, and Awake to a lesser
extent. Profanity in a Dream Theater song sort of suggests that, yes,
Dream Theater is headed in a direction away from art-rock (and the Images
and Words style), and it's sort of a bummer in my opion.

    nope.

count more carefully... there is one spot where JP SEEMS to change the rhythm
as you say, starting the three note pattern one triplet earlier.... but this
is NOT the case... if you count carefully you will find that portnoy in
the previous measure adds one triplet beat so that he is accenting one triplet
later than JP .... at the end of this section ( this is the section with the
wild guitar solo right before the vocals come in) , portnoy drops one triplet
beat , thus returning things back to normal... ( i believe that the tab book
notates the measure that adds a beat as 9/8)

The reason it's not in your list is because your system administrator
isn't subscribed to it. Different sites pull in different Usenet groups.
If you want it, maybe you should try mailing the sys-admin and tell him

Hi guys. This is my first post, but I've been lurking
for a few weeks now. I have some questions/comments on
    several topics.

    1) I'm from the midwest - Columbus, Ohio. I've seen DT twice.
Once last Halloween at the Newport, and once during the I&W
tour at a small club called the Alrosa Villa. I enjoyed myself
immensely at these shows, but I must say that after hearing
what the band did on these tours later in the schedule, I feel
cheated! I guess both of these shows were at the beginning of
the tours and they hadn't had time to experiment with the
arrangements yet. Oh well. Maybe they'll come bach through
       this sumer (PLEASE)!

    2) What do jammers know about this topic? Will DT ever link up
with a big-time band and open? I think this would be great
exposure to large crowds. Maybe this is what they need to
launch record sales into the heavens. I'd love to see DT open
for Van Halen (they're coming to Columbus on 8/12 - got my
pavillion seats!) just so Eddie could be blown off the stage
by the new god of guitar - JP!

    3) A guy asked in YJ850 about careers. I'm a technical writer
and trainer for Banc One. I went to Northwestern where I was
a 4-year member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the professional
men's music fraternity? Any Sinfonian jammers out there?

    4) I agree with most people who have recently posted that Awake
is masterfully recorded. It is without a doubt, the best
sounding CD in my over 300 CD collection!

    5) Finally, which of these CDs would jammers recommend? Majestic
Harmony, Kick into a Dream, Wake Up, or Dance of Eternity? I'm
very particular about sound quality, so which has the best sound?
In which one is James singing (and not yelling, as he has been
apt to do - no flames please - just IMHO!).

Sorry for the long post - but I had a lot of things to get off
    my mind.

    J.R.

I said the set was 2 1/2 hours, maybe I was off by 10 or twenty minutes,
but when I attempted to start a tread with my good friend John about the
differnt possiblities of the summer set list (who we all
know forward my mail because of my address problem) everybody told us to
go to hell (barring a few). They said DT was not METALLICA and didn't
have five albums out and didn't play ice hockey arenas. I am sorry I
said Fuck, Mike Patrick, but for the way people ripped into me before I
felt it nessacary. I sorry if I come off egotistical but people have to
be open mined and play along with things. Its only logic that DT plays
    over a two hour set.

Hey, John Mastin, I borrowed your pen to get Derrick's Autograph.
thanks. I forgot to say hi to the four YTSEJAMMERS I met. That guy at
Micky D's is getting left out I think (You know the Indian with the I&W
    t-shirt).

I think thats about it, oh Yeah, everybody tell Mike Bahr to put
the acoustic Another Day on the Unplugged.

Well, I wasn't in the first argument, but I don't think the guitar part changes
at all. The drum part changes meter (well, the whole song changes meter), but
Petrucci's notes are exactly the same. They seem to be faster or something,
but that's an aural illusion caused by the drums. Oh, and he never plays
triplets; he's always playing three notes and a rest, a pattern of four.

Eg. at the beginning, it's in 4:4

    guitar: X X X O X X X O X X X O X X X O (X==note, 0==rest);
    drums: B S B S (B==bass drum, S==snare);

then, it's in 12:8, with the drums in four playing triplets. But the eight
notes don't change at all in the guitar part.

    guitar: X X X O X X X O X X X O X X X O (X==note, 0==rest);
    drums: B S B S B S (B==bass drum, S==snare);

As you can see, there's a relationship change between the guitar and drums,
from 1:1 to 2:3. But the guitar part never changes.

That's my two cents. Oh, to the guy who asked what we do, I'm an undergrad
in Mechanical Engineering. Pretty crazy for a Rush/DT fan huh? (ha ha).

I've been a fan of CG since approximately 1988, they're one of my
_favorite_ bands and one of the first that got me into that branch of music.

I'm really not sure what happened to them - I do know they broke up after
_Strange And Beautiful_, and I believe they reformed under the moniker "Zen
Boy". I think they're still around, I have a vague memory of seeing a
letter from someone in a magazine recently raving about them.

    Hi 'jammers,

First of all...I hope someone out in Deutschland (did I spell it right?) has a DAT deck and I hope the station will broadcast the entire DT show cuz I sure want a copy of it! (Thanx Ties for the post!) Anybody who is planning on taping the show, please e-mail me!! Also, anyone who taped last night's or the NJ gig, I'd like to hear from you too!

Okay, and to the person (sorry, don't remember who posted it) that said DT should move to the Midwest, I say YES!! I too live in the Midwest (Milwaukee to be exact) and think it'd be great. And hey, an added bonus, if they were to move to Milwaukee, is all the beer around here!

Last, to M. Martin who wanted to know occupations: I finished most of my classes for a printing program at Milwaukee Area Technical College last year (got three academics to go B4 I can get my associates degree - yechh!) and have been working at a Pre-press house for the last year. I work on Macs, assembling scans with page files (provided by the customer) and outputting the pages to film (which are used to make printing plates).

    That's all for now...bye!

The infamous and much discussed F-word springs to mind :( I hope to God they're still releasing TSM over here.

Question for Ties about this weekend's German radio broadcast - Ties (or anyone amongst our German friends), do you know if NDR2 broadcasts over any of the astra satellite stations? If it does any of us with dishes will be able to pick up the show in near CD quality.

And finally...Mike you've got my vote for the Unplugged set!

    Mark.

The NDR2 radio channel is also available over the ASTRA 1B satellite (freq 11.582, polarity H, audio track stereo 7.38&7.56, no scrambling) I will try to connect my DAT to the satellite receiver (I have never done that before) and record the show. Does anyone know at what time the broadcast will be, esp. when DT will be on stage? How long will the show be (I can record max. 6 hours on one tape).

Hehe...proud to say that when DT came to Kansas City back in Nov 94 Fates Warning came with them! They originally advertised the show with I Mother Earth, but they had a change at the last minute (or week or whatever) Great show! Too bad when I saw it I hadn't purchased Awake yet..=(

Hello everyone, it's Babs. Here's my 2 cents on the F word:

I made my friend Nannette go to the YTSE Convention because I didn't want to be the only female there. Nannette is not a lover of heavy metal music or long-haired guys, but after several years of listening to me praise DT and after meeting them at the convention her first response was:

"What a nice bunch of guys. They were so polite and not one of them talked trash (i.e. swore)." I told her that that was what was so great about their music. That it's epic and deep. When I talked to her on the phone last night I told her about how they put the F word in ACoS. She thinks that we should start a petition to get it taken out of there (giggle). Upon further deliberation we both concluded that we will let it slide this time, but if behavior like that continues further action will be warranted.

Ok everyone - let the flames begin. -BABS

Hey everyone...the show last night was unreal. I wont go over the set list again since it was pretty much the same as the other nights show. One major complaint about the show....it was WAY TOO LOUD. It made the points where LaBrie hit his high notes unbareable if not impossible to listen to. The sound was pretty good otherwise. The acoustic Wait For Sleep was just perfectly played (hopefully they will do that as a future B-side or something). Im not sure about the changes they made to ACOS. Id have to hear it again because my view on a song tends to change after i hear it a couple of times. I do agree with the fact that they slowed it down a little. (Doesnt start out as intense as it used to). I am upset because the lyrics that they changed were the lyric parts that i like. Another shock is that they didnt playTake the Time or Another Day. Anyone know why? At on point during LSOAD. Derek hit a really bad note and LaBrie gave him a look like "what the fuck was that". Derek just grinned and kept playing. Also during LTL, During the part in the middle where its all piano (sounds like a sped up wait for sleep). Derek really screwed up...stopped....and then restarted that part again. People around me groaned...but i said..." give the guy a break look at all the stuff he has learned in a short period of time. They did say that they would be back in a month to play the NYC area again...:) I just hope they turn it down a little. I know this review sounds kinda negative...but it definitely was one of the best shows ive been to. Anyone want to know anything more specific just mail me....

    Later

This is my first time posting to this list although I've been reading for some time. My reason for writing is the show last night at Malibu in Long Island. This was my first DT show and it was unbelievable!! I know others will give a more detailed review so I'll be short. 1) La Brie was exceptional - I have a few bootlegs and he sounded incredibly better than he does on any recording I have. 2) Derek was good all night except that his one obvious mistake came at the worst possible time. During the encore they were playing LTL, and right when th e piano breaks into WFS, he lost his timing and had to stop and restart. OOPPS!

Overall, a fabulous show. PS Portnoy said that they would be returning in a month or so....So will I!!

    Until then.... Dave

Well a lot of other people have all ready given their reviews on the show, I guess I can give mine also :) Thankfully, they remebered the set of songs better than I do. First off, I know this will probably upset a lot of you, but I have to say it anyhow: I (and my friends) thought Echolyn SUCKED. I mean, these guys sound like they have some musical talent as far as playing their instruments go, but their melodys seem so convoluted and messed up, it really strained my ears. I had to go outside. Second, the long wait for DT sucked. Just thought I'd get that off my shoulders also (fuck 104.3 also, I've never heard you play DT). Onto DT! My first time seeing them live and well worth it! What I really liked about the show was how they played the songs that run together well on the album (ie, Mirror -> Lie, A Mind Beside Itself (the whole thing), Wait for Sleep -> Learning to Live). I really liked the acoustic Wait for Sleep and Silent Man (doin' that Mr. Big thing, Portnoy is hilarious). They also played the FULL entire version of LtL, which is one of my favs, along w/ Under a Glass Moon (Petrucci's solos rocked, as always). Hey and Petrucci doesn't look overweight anymore, like he did on the pix in Awake. As for Change of Seasons...I dunno, can't say I was disappointed, 'cuz it sounded really cool, but it kinda sucks to have to hear it for the first time live after standing in that place for like 6 hours. It'll probably mean more after I listen to it on the album and get to know it a little better. PS, La Brie said the album would be out sometime in Sept, including some live stuff taken from some shows in England (or was it Europe, I forget). Anyhow, 'nuff for now. APJ

    Hey Jammerz,

First a Question: I read in "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" magazine and while back that JP and Steve Morse recorded a track together for a compilation album. Of course, I can't find that issue. Does anyone know if this track exists? and if so, what is the name of the album.

Now an answer: to the question fo what we jammerz do for a living, I currently am trying to make ends meet while a freind and I are starting up a recording studio in Ypsilanti, MI. Slated to open aprrox. Spring '96.

In a message dated 95-06-13 22:24:34 EDT, you write:

Well, I just graduated High School, and I'll be going to Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science this fall. Hope that helps!
