<---- Begin Included Message ----> Is it just me or is Scarred the best put together song anywhere?!? Every part is perfect and even though the musical style changes dramaticly it all fits. That's my fav song, other than SDV. :) <---- End Included Message ----> YES!! Scarred is amazing! I will disagree with those who say AWAKE isn't put together well. Awake is one of those albums you just can't listen to songs out of place. Like you can't listen to ANY PART of AMBI if its not in the right order. You start off with a great song about facing life (6:00) And you end with a great song about losing everything (SDV). But then again I love IW and Awake equally.... James

Aww..Kansas isn't that bad! All you have to do is stay close to Missouri and away from the south and west (northeast corner..that's where the populations is)... But I do have to say, the singer of Fates Warning's voice was pretty messed up at the concert...It wasn't bad, but he missed a lot of notes...It was also really scratchy (probably from drinking beer between songs). Well, My fav DT moment would be at the KC concert. It started with the lights dimming (no one on stage mind you). The opening notes of PMU under play over the PA (still no one on stage). Then Portnoy walks out with his drum sticks, sits in his chair and starts pounding the opening drum beat. Next thing you know petrucci is out there playing the first real guitar chords. Then comes Derek pounding a couple of notes on the Keys, finally Myung comes out with his bass and gives some hard notes. And at the end, you're wondering wheres James?? Then right before his part comes in, he runs in and starts singing "Lost in the sky...". Oh and the same thing happened for the encore performance of Metropolis. And one more favorite moment from the DT concert would be when everyone left the stage, and portnoy gave a 10 minute drum solo. Now off the albums, my favorite moments would be: 1. Wait for sleep riff in LTL 2. "People in prayer for me" part of Scarred 3. "And I'll Smile And I'll learn to Pretend" of SDV 4. Silent Man Riff in Erotomania 5. The opening of the killing hand 6. The first bass part in TOWHTSTS

All right! Yes! KC-CON! Anyone else in the Midwest feel up to it? Hey, we should of thought of this back in November when DT was in KC... So what area of Kc are you from? I'm here in Lenexa (bout 10 mins away) What did you think of the concert back in November? Unfortunately when I had seen it, I hadn't purchased Awake yet so I probably didn't fully appreciate it... Geez, It made me so mad, cuz at the concert, I had 2 guitar picks and a drum stick thrown at me and some lady grabbed them from my hand (got pretty bad scratches to prove it...well not anymore). C'ya around! James

This is my second post (maybe I'll keep a running count... ;) )

    * To the guy who did that Dream Theater ANSI (the one with the flaming heart, majesty logo and DT logo), that is amazing! I'm using those 3 parts of the ANSI (separated into 3 screens) those on my BBS (just to stress the issue of my obsession with DT to my users a bit more).

    >> About the only thing I wish he had done differently, >> was maybe put some of the rarer songs like Puppies on Acid or Moon >> Bubbles or whatever on it, since studio versions of both Eve and TLF >> are available. > > WHERE WHERE!!! I've got Eve (studio) but where is To Live > Forver (studio)??? Help!

    * The TLF studio version is available on the "Lie" single. I also heard rumours that they'd be putting it on ACoS (have no idea how they'd be able to put that as well as the Ronnie Scott stuff on it and still call it an EP though).

Actually, now that I think about it, I guess that might be hard for some people to find, I'm not sure if it was released in the US or not, but mine's a German import so I guess not. But the record stores here in TO seem to be pretty good as far as carrying DT imports goes, I had no troubles at all finding LatM, WDADU, or the TSM and "Lie" singles, or Echolyn's "As The World".

    * Favourite DT moment. This is a toughie. There have been several. The most MEMORABLE is the first time I heard DT, when I got I&W (I got it without having heard them before), listening to the intro for Pull Me Under, and the best moment was right when James comes in. It made me wonder why I'd never heard these guys before... but it didn't get me jumping around the room in a headbanging frenzy or whatever (that's reserved for other songs... ;) ).

Another awesome moment was when I got LatM a couple weeks ago, it was amazing to hear James singing songs off WDADU for the first time, I couldn't believe how awesome AFIL and AH/TKH are live, with James singing. If you want a specific moment, it would be from the intro of TKH to James singing "crossing over", as well as "when I go back again, will it be the same" at the end. There haven't been too many moments in DT songs where he's just blown me away like that (maybe on "Innocence Faded", but that's about it).

Also (yes, the list goes on... ;) ), a bit more briefly:

    - The buildup towards the end of SDV, specifically the "And I'll never be open again, and I'll have no more dreams to defend", etc. part. - Metropolis, around 6:30 or so, towards the end of that long instrumental section, there's that really wicked part, and I'm pretty sure I needn't say more... - The whole instrumental intro to "A Fortune In Lies".

    There's probably more as well...

    * Images & Words vs. Awake

I personally prefer Images & Words. It's hard to explain why, but I agree with the people who say the songs just flow better. They're both great albums, but I&W just seems to have a fuller sound, whereas Awake seems to be more guitar based. The instrumentation on I&W just seems to be more intricate, and classical-ish. I also don't care at all for James' screaming on Awake. I mean, when they're playing live, and he screams to emphasize something, or whatever, that's great, but I just don't like his singing on songs like The Mirror/Lie.

I think what Mike Portnoy said in some interview (forget what it was) about them having all the time in the world to produces Images & Words, while not having as much time to do Awake had a lot to do with it, as well as Kevin leaving the band.

for all of you wondering about the "fuck" in the new ACOS, here is the context of it. (by ear, so dont hold me to this) :)

oh come let us adore him i lose and they ignore him no matter what, dont let him be let's feed upon his misery

..and string him up for all the world to see

i'm sick of all you hypocrites for holding me at bay and i don't need your mass you fuck to get me through the day

seasons change and so can i i want more no time to cry

it is about 15 minutes in, the whole story of ACOS seems to have shifted to a religious theme, it seems that it would fit right in between voices and the silent man.

maybe this had something to do with kev's departure? maybe they felt more free to express their beliefs with him gone? the whole passage seems very anti-christian to me. but i dont know.

i am gonna try to write out all the new lyrics, and post them, but i figured this would at least help those of you who are discussing the whole fuck issue.

Hey everyone! This is my first posting, so I'll try to be concise. I like classical music. While DT's music may lend itself easily to classical style analysis, it is (IMHO) not clearly classically influenced. It does not follow any conventional or contemporary classical form that I know of, and it flies in the face of classical musics' traditional musical values(read-subtlety). I think it's more closely related to jazz. As to the current question of what everyone does: I'm a 20 year old student at NYU, majoring in music performance, concentration in voice. Also, I am a fairly serious guitarist. Been playing for 6 years, currently trying to learn "Erotomania" (it's not as easy as it sounds:) --------potestatem@aol.com P.S.-Silly newbie question: How do I get an Ytse Jam T-Shirt?

i tried to get all the new lyrics, i havent looked at the old ones in a while, so this should be a fresh perspective :) everything in () i am not sure about and [] is comments.

[4:55] i remember a time my frail virgin mind watched the crimson sunrise imagined what it might find

life was filled with wonder i felt the warm wind blow i must explore the boundaries trenched in the depths of winter snow

    innocence caressing me i've never been so ( ) there is so much life ( ) ( ) is not ( )

[6:00] those days are gone now changed like a leaf on a tree blown away forever into the cool autumn breeze

the snow has been falling and my sun's not so bright i struggle to hold on with the last (time ever)

[6:45] in my day of inequity this is not ( ) [not "some delicacy"] struggle to ease the pain struggle to (fall asleep)

[7:03] ignorance surrounding me ( ) there is so much life can bring the end ( )

i'll always remember the chill of november the news of the fall the sounds in the hall the clock on the wall ticking away

"seize the day," i heard him say, "life will not always be this way", "look around and hear the sounds", "cherish your life while you're still around"

[8:50] we can learn from the past but those days are gone

[9:20] then i heard in my mind the lesson was i learned i have to seize the day before i return

[10:03] prepare for the flight i have with all my might here in my deepest fright she walked into the night

she turned for one last look she looked me in the eye i said "i love you...goodbye..."

    ["please dont go" is missing]

[13:50] so far so it seems all is lost with nothing fulfilled off the pages and the TV screen another world where nothing's true

tripping through the light fantastic lose a step and never get old left alone with a cold blank stare i feel like giving up

i was blinded by a paradise utopia high in the sky a dream that old man told me deep in sorrow, wondering why

[15:15] oh come let us adore him abuse and then ignore him no matter what, dont let him be let's feed upon his misery

..and string him up for all the world to see

[15:40] i'm sick of all you hypocrites for holding me at bay and i don't need your mass you fuck to get me through the day

seasons change and so can i i want more no time to cry i ( ) reach ( ) now ( ) day yeah

[17:00] oh come let us adore him abuse and then ignore him no matter what dont let him be let's feed upon his misery

..now it's time for love to change me

[21:05] much wiser now lifetime of memories run through my head they taught me (how) for better or worse our love will (stay) i realize there's no turning back life goes on love (reaches death)

[21:52] i sit down with my son (share) to see the crimson sunset now my lifetime is done no one can seize the day

[not sure about this whole last part, labrie is screaming it] :)

now that my time has come he is my only one we look into the sun seize the day now is the time ( ) ( )

CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION current to 6/19/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam list before anybody else. :)

QUICKIE UPDATE: The blanks have been ordered, so we're back in that 29-day cycle. This time, I know what I'm doing, so I'll have a lot of shipments ready-to-go when the CDs are out of the gate, so to speak. Every single iota of work I can get done in advance, will be done in advance. :) I'm already well into the pre-production phase, doing extra mastering work with the sound and with my new DAT recorder, as well as preparing the printed pages (so it will look more "in your face" than the "distinguished" look of Subconscious) and etc. etc. etc... I even have the material orders split between two suppliers in case one is faster than the other! :)

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. For those of you who are still waiting to get yours, I'm sending them out the day I get the order, so they should be there very very soon. :) I've even sold my own personal extra copies. I can't believe this was so popular!

Now that the CD supply is dry, expect resale prices of the Subconscious disc to go up fast. I would hope nobody plans to purposefully soak would-be buyers with acquired inventory (which is one reason nobody was able to buy more than five of the discs, as a limit) but you can expect that there will be a certain amount of value gained, with it being limited edition, hand-numbered, etc.

THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus? 2. When can I order and how? 3. Orders received. =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier this year, in an effort that is still ongoing, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all, since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded, Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself, sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation, packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. I will only print 1000 copies... beyond that, there shall be no more.

This time, the first 150 copies will be hand-signed and marked for collector value, to add to the "specialness" of the CD, but the rest will be equally rare anyway, so expect this to be a true gem in your collection.

Here's the information on the show.

Title: Rush "Cygnus" Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 83 min Running time: 75 min Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena) Location: Tucson, Arizona Date: November 20, 1978 Generation: Transferred to 48kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog. Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

Setlist: Anthem A Passage to Bangkok By-Tor and the Snow Dog Xanadu Something for Nothing The Trees Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres I. Prelude II. Apollo III. Dionysus IV. Armageddon V. Cygnus VI. The Sphere Closer to the Heart Circumstances A Farewell to Kings La Villa Strangiato

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112, the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I will be trying to put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2 and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!"

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And I placed the order for Cygnus blanks a few weeks ago. Used a faster supplier. Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre- order deal again.

Why, you may ask, should I send the money, if I won't get the CD for a while, though?

Well, you don't have to. But you can. I strongly urge you to consider it. Here's why.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to run a little contest. A random ten people in the first 150 orders (this will be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

    How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2 for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers, so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer it anywhere else.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe! I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs, a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to 4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

    Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and, optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you want to keep them unlisted.

Send all this to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments, suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if you call me at 3:00 in the morning.

    3. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of finishing the Sub project, and Cygnus is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project. Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!
